Abstract:
Three exemplary models of how philosophical thinking is defined in the encounter with different cultures are critically discussed: 1. the self-centred model, in which other cultures are seen as preliminary stages of one's own way of thinking, 2. the competitive model, which calculates different traditions according to comparitve strengths and weaknesses, 3. the model of philosophy based upon the distinction between scientific and mythical ways of thinking, and which determines the value of philosophical assertions by reference to the employment of specific methods of representation.

Abstract:
In modem global politics, having a constitutional monarchy is in the minority and is perhaps in decline. However, Britain and Japan do not follow this trend. Their respective monarchy and Emperorship remain powerful. Although these do not hold political power constitutionally, they maintain a moral influence on their societies. This thesis explores and compares two constitutional monarchies - the UK in the west and Japan in the Far East - to analyse how they have survived long histories. To do this, it uses the methodologies of path dependency and historical institutionalism.

Blamey, Laura Kate. "Ecosystem effects of a rock-lobster 'invasion': comparitive and modelling approaches." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/6234.

Full text
Abstract:
An eastward shift in the West Coast rock lobster Jasus lalandii took place in the early 1990s along the south-west coast of South Africa in an area known as East of Cape Hangklip (EOCH). Given the predatory capabilities of J. lalandii, an intricate relationship between the urchin Parechinus angulosus and juvenile abalone Haliotis midae, and an already over-exploited ecosystem, the lobster âinvasionâ is assumed to have had serious consequences on the benthic community and associated fisheries. To investigate these effects, I used both empirical and modelling approaches. Based on field studies, I first analysed temporal changes in rock lobsters and the benthic community at two lobster-invaded sites EOCH. Prior to 1990, rock lobsters were rare EOCH, but from the mid 1990s onwards they achieved densities of 0.4- 0.8 m-2. The pre-invaded benthic community was significantly different from the postinvaded community at both sites. Three major changes followed the lobster invasion: (1) a decline or even a disappearance of herbivores (a direct effect), (2) macroalgal proliferation (an indirect effect) and (3) increases of a range of sessile taxa (unknown effect). This was followed by a detailed spatial analysis of J. lalandii densities and the benthic community EOCH, in which I surveyed six sites (three invaded and three noninvaded) at three different depth zones (< 5 m, 6-12 m and 13-20 m). At all three depth zones Jasus lalandii was significantly more abundant in invaded areas than in noninvaded areas, and invaded and non-invaded benthic communities were significantly different. Invaded sites were characterized by higher densities of rock lobsters, macroalgae and sessile species, whereas non-invaded sites had greater amounts of herbivores and encrusting corallines. Abalone abundance reflected their previouslyrecorded dependency on urchins and the effects of rampant poaching. Floral species diversity was on average greater at invaded sites and increased with depth, whereas faunal species diversity was greater at non-invaded sites but also increased with depth. The depths in which strongest effects of J. lalandii were felt coincided with the depth of maximum abundance of the urchin Parechinus angulosus, the abalone Haliotis midae, the kelp Ecklonia maxima and encrusting corallines. In line with an ecosystem approach to fisheries management and to better understand the ecosystem dynamics EOCH, a lobster-urchin-abalone Minimally Realistic Model was developed for a lobster-invaded area, and an adjacent nonvi invaded area. A key feature of the model is that its focus was restricted to the critical interactions of interest and was fitted to all available data. An existing abalone stockassessment model formed the foundation of this multispecies model, to which rock lobsters and urchins were added. Abalone and rock lobsters were modelled using agestructured production models and urchins were modelled using a simpler surplus production model because of data limitations. The model estimated a lobster starting biomass (in 1985) of 314 tonnes (MT) and a carrying capacity of 1511 MT. Speciesinteraction parameters, particularly the lobster-abalone interaction, were difficult to estimate and the model was unable to estimate the urchin intrinsic growth rate parameter because the data had insufficient contrast. Results from the model suggest that the lobster invasion was probably caused by an influx of adult lobsters as opposed to increased larval settlement. Future projections suggest that given the virtual disappearance of urchins, complete removal of rock lobsters would be needed to allow the urchin population to re-establish itself. Recovery of urchins could take up to 50 years and recovery of abalone would take even longer. The model-predicted differences in lobsters, abalone and urchins between invaded and non-invaded areas paralleled empirical data. Further model explorations included (1) a hypothetical lobster invasion into a currently non-invaded zone EOCH and (2) the addition of a top fish predator into a lobster-invaded zone. Various hypothetical lobster invasions into the non-invaded zone all resulted in the eventual disappearance of urchins and, consequently, juvenile abalone. Available catch and effort data for fish indicated that a major decline in linefish has taken place, but that this occurred prior to the 1980s and was thus not the direct cause of the rock-lobster invasion. This was supported by outputs of a model incorporating fish predation, which demonstrated that the presently over-exploited fish biomass has very little effect on the rock lobster population, but that at historical pristine levels, fish would have been capable of preventing the establishment of a dense rock-lobster population and the consequent disappearance of urchins and abalone. These results indicate that the over-fishing of top-predators would have had massive ramifications for the rest of the ecosystem. Through dual empirical and modelling approaches, my study highlights the complexity of ecosystem interactions and the need for multispecies models in developing an ecosystem approach to fisheries management, and adds to the understanding of the causes and implications of human- and environmentally-induced shifts in community structure.

Chandranath, Swaminathan Irwin. "Comparitive activities and mechanisms of action of three novel antiulcer agents." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2000. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/21028/.

Full text
Abstract:
Antiulcer agents, notably inhibitors of gastric acid secretion, have been the most successful category of drugs to be discovered in recent years; and moreover, there are currently four such agents in the world list of top 25 best selling drugs. Histamine H2 antagonists have been the number one selling pharmaceutical product for more than a decade and inhibitors of the parietal cell HIC-ATPase, so called "proton pump inhibitors" (PPI), look set to continue this success. The proposed study was designed to establish the relative efficacy and mechanisms of action of three novel agents using both in vitro and in vivo models. The three compounds namely AG-1749 (Lansoprazole), PD-136450 and transforming growth factor alpha (TGF(x) were studied to evaluate their antisecretory and antiulccr activities. Lansoprazole, the second PPI to be developed for clinical use, is a non-competitive inhibitor of the H1C-ATPase and has recently been launched in a number of countries. PD-136450 is a competitive antagonist of central and peripheral cholecystokinin-B (CCK-B) receptors (gastrin receptor) and it under clinical development as an anxiolytic but which has actions on the stomach and pancreas. Anxiolytic drug is otherwise known as anti-anxiety drugs, which are used to treat anxiety disorders, like depression, panic disorders, phobias and many personality disorders. TOFu is a polypeptide growth factor, which acts at the EGF receptor and displays potent mitogenic and antisecretory activity. The initial study deals with the comparison of the three compounds with omeprazole and ranitidine in terms of their ability to inhibit acid secretion and their activity in a range of experimental ulcer models. Potency, duration of action and activity against a range of stimulants of acid secretion (histamine, pentagastrin and basal) was determined in anaesthetized rat models by establishing dose-response relationships. The compounds represent a spectrum of activities in as much as lansoprazole is a potent, long acting inhibitor, PD-136450 is an orally active but selective inhibitor, while TOFu has a very short duration and is only active after parenteral administration. In a view to find out the mechanism of action of these drugs on gastric acid secretion, isolated gastric glands from rabbits were employed as an in vitro technique using radiolabeled 14C-aminopyrine as a marker. The results show that lansoprazole was the most potent antisecretory agent compared to other two drugs. The second phase of the study deals with the activity of the three compounds against gastric ulcers induced by acid hypersecretion, indomethacin and stress. This study enabled us to assess the extent to which antisecretory activity per se compared with other actions such as wound healing (TGFa) or anxiolytic activity (PD-136450) contribute to ulcer healing. As other workers already established that prostaglandins and nitric oxide are involved in the cytoprotective activity, the present study investigated the influence of prostaglandin and nitric oxide by using indomethacin and L-NAME pretreatment on the cytoprotective activity of lansoprazole, PD-136450 and TGFcz. Moreover, the three drugs were tested for their activities on the mucus and bicarbonate production in the stomach. It was found that lansoprazole and TGFc increased the gastric mucus secretion while PD-136450 did not show any change. Moreover it was evidenced from this study that the protective activity of PD-136450 is associated with the influence of bicarbonate secretion from the pancreas. In conclusion, the results of this study have indicated that lansoprazole, PD- 136450 and TGFct are potent antisecretory and antiulcer agents which have great therapeutic importance.

Khan, Umair I. "Computational Techniques for Comparative Performance Evaluation of RF Localization inside the Human Body." Digital WPI, 2011. https://digitalcommons.wpi.edu/etd-theses/647.

Full text
Abstract:
Localization inside the human body using radio frequency (RF) transmission is gaining importance in a number of applications such as Capsule Endoscopy. The accuracy of RF localization depends on the technology adopted for this purpose. The two most common RF localization technologies use received signal strength (RSS) and time-of-arrival (TOA). This research presents a comparison of the accuracy of TOA and RSS based localization inside human tissue using computational techniques for simulation of radio propagation inside human tissues. Computer simulation of the propagation of radio waves inside the human body is extremely challenging and computationally intensive. We designed a basic, MATLAB coded, finite difference time-domain (FDTD) for the radio propagation in and around the human body and compared the results obtained from this software with the commonly used and commercially available Finite Element Method (FEM) modeling in Ansoft HFSS (ANSYS). We first show that the FDTD analysis yields comparable results. Then we use the software to simulate the RSS and TOA of the wideband signals propagated inside the human body for RF localization to compare the accuracies of the two methods. The accuracy of each technique is compared with the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) commonly used for calculation of bounds for the performance of localization techniques and the effects of human body movements.

Abstract:
Avoiding from congestion and provision of reliable communication characterising the low energy consumption and high data rate is one of the momentous challenges at Media Access Control (MAC) layer. This become more difficult to achieve when there is energy constraint mixed with mobility of nodes. Same issue is addressed in this underlying paper. Here we have proposed a Time-Sharing Energy Efficient Congestion Control (TSEEC) technique for Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks. Time Division Multiple Access Protocol (TDMA) and Statistical Time Division Multiple Access Protocol (STDMA) are major constituents of this technique. These helps in conserving the energy by controlling the sleeping, waking up and listening states of sensor nodes. Load Based Allocation and Time Allocation Leister techniques further helps in conserving the network energy minimizing the network congestion. First mentioned technique is designed on the basis of STDMA Protocol and uses the sensor node information to dynamically assign the time slots while later said technique is does the job of mobility management of sensor node. This Time Allocation Leister techniques further comprises of Extricated Time Allocation (ETA), Shift Back Time Allocation (SBTA), and eScaped Time Allocation (STA) sub techniques for managing the joing and leaving of nodes to cluster and redundant\absence of data for communication respectively. To control the movement of mobile sensor nodes, we have also introduced mobility pattern as part of TSEEC that helps in making the protocol adaptive to traffic environment and to mobility as well. A comparitive analysis of proposed mechanism with SMAC is performed in NS2 along with mathematical anslysis by considering energy consumption, and packet deliver ratio as performance evaluation parameters. The results for the former outperforms to that of later. Moreover, comparative analysis of the proposed TSEEC with other MAC protocols is also presented.
