"On the mechanism of solid-state phase transitions in molecular crystals – the role of cooperative motion in (quasi)racemic linear amino acids." Abstract:
During single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) phase transitions, a polymorph of a compound can transform to a more stable form while remaining in the solid state. By understanding the mechanism of these transitions, strategies can be developed to control this phenomenon. This is particularly important in the pharmaceutical industry, but also relevant for other industries such as the food and agrochemical industries. Although extensive literature exists on SCSC phase transitions in inorganic crystals, it is unclear whether their classications and mechanisms translate to molecular crystals, with weaker interactions and more steric hindrance. A comparitive study of SCSC phase transitions in aliphatic linear-chain amino acid crystals, both racemates and quasi-racemates, is presented. A total of 34 transitions are considered and most are classified according to their structural change during the transition. Transitions without torsional changes show very different characteristics, such as transition temperature, enthalpy and free energy, compared with transitions that involve torsional changes. These differences can be rationalized using classical nucleation theory and in terms of a difference in mechanism; torsional changes occur in a molecule-by-molecule fashion, whereas transitions without torsional changes involve cooperative motion with multiple molecules at the same time.

Abstract:
Macondo like Malgudi, a fictional town created by the Latin American novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez in his magnum opus One Hundred Years of Solitude with its cosmic spirituality and surreal characters lies deep-hearted in the minds of literary lovers all over the world. But far away from Colombian hills and miles apart from its vast seas lies Vijayan’s Khasak. A fine work of magical realism which changed the trajectory of Malayalam novel that got lost in translation like many other great works of Malayalam literature. This paper attempts to critically analyze both these novels in their socio-cultural and post-colonial perspectives and how they contribute to the genre of magical realism.

Abstract:
The nucleoside to nucleic acids pathways are attractive targets for molecular imaging of cell proliferation, for radionuclide-based radiotherapy, for following molecular processes and for drug design, development and delivery. This paper describes the preparation of several radiolabelled nucleosides for comparitive study as markers of tumour cell proliferation. 1-(2-Deoxy-2-fluoro-β-D-arabinofuranosyl)-5-[36Cl]chlorouracil (F[36Cl]ClAU)1 was synthesized by reaction of 1-(2-deoxy-2-fluoro-arabinofuranosyl)uracil (FAU) with Na36Cl in the presence of 2 M HNO3 (32% radiochemical yield; 13.5 MBq/mmol). 1-(2-Deoxy-2-fluoroarabinofuranosyl)-5-fluoro/bromo/iodouracils radiolabelled with carbon-14 ([2-14C]FFAU; 1.5 GBq/mmol), bromine-82 (F[82Br]BrAU; 167 MBq/mmol) and iodine-125 (F[125I]IAU; 10.4 GBq/mmol) were synthesized according to literature methods. These radiolabelled halopyrimidine nucleosides were administered by i.v. injection into BDF1 mice bearing transplanted Lewis Lung tumors. Uptake of test compounds by target (tumor) tissue was low, and not dissimilar to the reported uptake of their high-specific-activity 5-halopyrimidine nucleoside counterparts. Selected biodistribution data are presented. In general, clearance from blood was rapid, with less that one percent of the injected dose remaining in the blood within 1 h of injection. Tumor uptake was approximately 2% of the injected dose per g of tumor for F[36Cl]ClAU and F[125I]IAU, with [2-14C]FFAU showing less that 2% per g and F[82Br]BrAU with over 3% per g at this time after injection. Data are compared to those for the respective high-specific-activity counterparts.

Abstract:
This article aims to compare and contrast the available empirical evidence concerning the capital structure of Polish,Czech and Russian companies. This is an intriguing research area due to the fact that the Czech and Polish economiesbegan their transition to the market economy contemporaneously with Russia, and so along with other cultural andhistorical parallels, the data is comparable. We compare data from a selection of large companies from the selected territories and investigate whether effective taxrate is significant determinant of capital structure. The selected sample is comprised of 69 companies (50 from Russia, 9from Poland, and 10 from Czech Republic), using data over a period of fourteen years. We perform a regression analysisand interpret the results using theoretical knowledge as articulated in the academic literature. The dependent variablein all tested regressions is financial leverage, calculated as the ratio of the sum of short-term and long-term debts to thesum of short-term and long-term assets. Other variables evaluated include interest coverage ratio, the level of companytangibility, and the cost of debt. This set of input values was uploaded from the Bloomberg database. Our results indicate that taxation does have determining effect on the choice of a certain level of leverage. Moreover, the effective tax rate represents the most important factor in determining the model of capital structure utilised by largecompanies in each country studied. We establish the dependence of capital structure models on the level of corporate taxapplied in each country and identify a set of additional determinants which play a significant role. This paper’s novelty may be summarised as representing an advanced understanding of specific aspects of influence ofthe corporate taxation on the capital structure of companies in Russia and other economies of the former Eastern Bloc. This paper shines a new light on the subject area by extending the duration of the studied data beyond previous research,to fourteen years. As such, in this paper we present a comparitive dynamic which may be mapped on to other similarcomparitive studies. Our results will be of interest in professionals and academics who are involved in the fields oftaxation, debt and equity in Eastern Europe and Russia. The schema utilised here may be applied in a similar manner toexamine the development of similar economies in Eastern Europe and further afield.

"Comparitive study between button-hole tympanoplasty and tympanoplasty with placement of graft lateral to handle of malleus with or without cortical mastoidectomy in mucosal type of chronic otitis media." Abstract:

Background: Various techniques of underlay graft placement have been described in literature. In this study we compare two simple underlay techniques of temporalis fascia graft placement that is Buttonhole tympanoplasty and tympanoplasty with placement of graft lateral to handle of malleus in mucosal type of chronic otitis media patients undergoing tympanoplasty to find out which among the two is a better technique based on the audiological improvement post-operatively.

Methods: This is a case series study which included 30 patients undergoing type-1 tympanoplasty. Group A with 15 patients underwent Buttonhole tympanoplasty and Group B with 15 patients underwent tympanoplasty with placement of graft lateral to handle of malleus.

Results: Post-operative hearing improvement was assessed after duration of three months. In Group A, 13 (87%) patients showed hearing within normal limits and 2 (13%) patients showed mild conductive hearing loss. In Group B, 9 (60%) patients showed hearing within normal limits and 6 (40%) of patients showed mild conductive hearing loss. Both the techniques were statistically significant.

Conclusions: Both the techniques mentioned are simple and effective procedures. Buttonhole tympanoplasty was considered as superior technique among the two as the handle of malleus provides better anchoring for the temporalis fascia graft, intra-operative manoeuvring of the graft is easier without causing displacement of the graft, there is no reduction in the middle ear space and post-operative hearing improvement is excellent. When the handle of malleus is eroded surgeon can perform tympanoplasty with placement of graft lateral to handle of malleus.
