Abstract:
In modem global politics, having a constitutional monarchy is in the minority and is perhaps in decline. However, Britain and Japan do not follow this trend. Their respective monarchy and Emperorship remain powerful. Although these do not hold political power constitutionally, they maintain a moral influence on their societies. This thesis explores and compares two constitutional monarchies - the UK in the west and Japan in the Far East - to analyse how they have survived long histories. To do this, it uses the methodologies of path dependency and historical institutionalism.

Blamey, Laura Kate. "Ecosystem effects of a rock-lobster 'invasion': comparitive and modelling approaches." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/6234.

Full text
Abstract:
An eastward shift in the West Coast rock lobster Jasus lalandii took place in the early 1990s along the south-west coast of South Africa in an area known as East of Cape Hangklip (EOCH). Given the predatory capabilities of J. lalandii, an intricate relationship between the urchin Parechinus angulosus and juvenile abalone Haliotis midae, and an already over-exploited ecosystem, the lobster âinvasionâ is assumed to have had serious consequences on the benthic community and associated fisheries. To investigate these effects, I used both empirical and modelling approaches. Based on field studies, I first analysed temporal changes in rock lobsters and the benthic community at two lobster-invaded sites EOCH. Prior to 1990, rock lobsters were rare EOCH, but from the mid 1990s onwards they achieved densities of 0.4- 0.8 m-2. The pre-invaded benthic community was significantly different from the postinvaded community at both sites. Three major changes followed the lobster invasion: (1) a decline or even a disappearance of herbivores (a direct effect), (2) macroalgal proliferation (an indirect effect) and (3) increases of a range of sessile taxa (unknown effect). This was followed by a detailed spatial analysis of J. lalandii densities and the benthic community EOCH, in which I surveyed six sites (three invaded and three noninvaded) at three different depth zones (< 5 m, 6-12 m and 13-20 m). At all three depth zones Jasus lalandii was significantly more abundant in invaded areas than in noninvaded areas, and invaded and non-invaded benthic communities were significantly different. Invaded sites were characterized by higher densities of rock lobsters, macroalgae and sessile species, whereas non-invaded sites had greater amounts of herbivores and encrusting corallines. Abalone abundance reflected their previouslyrecorded dependency on urchins and the effects of rampant poaching. Floral species diversity was on average greater at invaded sites and increased with depth, whereas faunal species diversity was greater at non-invaded sites but also increased with depth. The depths in which strongest effects of J. lalandii were felt coincided with the depth of maximum abundance of the urchin Parechinus angulosus, the abalone Haliotis midae, the kelp Ecklonia maxima and encrusting corallines. In line with an ecosystem approach to fisheries management and to better understand the ecosystem dynamics EOCH, a lobster-urchin-abalone Minimally Realistic Model was developed for a lobster-invaded area, and an adjacent nonvi invaded area. A key feature of the model is that its focus was restricted to the critical interactions of interest and was fitted to all available data. An existing abalone stockassessment model formed the foundation of this multispecies model, to which rock lobsters and urchins were added. Abalone and rock lobsters were modelled using agestructured production models and urchins were modelled using a simpler surplus production model because of data limitations. The model estimated a lobster starting biomass (in 1985) of 314 tonnes (MT) and a carrying capacity of 1511 MT. Speciesinteraction parameters, particularly the lobster-abalone interaction, were difficult to estimate and the model was unable to estimate the urchin intrinsic growth rate parameter because the data had insufficient contrast. Results from the model suggest that the lobster invasion was probably caused by an influx of adult lobsters as opposed to increased larval settlement. Future projections suggest that given the virtual disappearance of urchins, complete removal of rock lobsters would be needed to allow the urchin population to re-establish itself. Recovery of urchins could take up to 50 years and recovery of abalone would take even longer. The model-predicted differences in lobsters, abalone and urchins between invaded and non-invaded areas paralleled empirical data. Further model explorations included (1) a hypothetical lobster invasion into a currently non-invaded zone EOCH and (2) the addition of a top fish predator into a lobster-invaded zone. Various hypothetical lobster invasions into the non-invaded zone all resulted in the eventual disappearance of urchins and, consequently, juvenile abalone. Available catch and effort data for fish indicated that a major decline in linefish has taken place, but that this occurred prior to the 1980s and was thus not the direct cause of the rock-lobster invasion. This was supported by outputs of a model incorporating fish predation, which demonstrated that the presently over-exploited fish biomass has very little effect on the rock lobster population, but that at historical pristine levels, fish would have been capable of preventing the establishment of a dense rock-lobster population and the consequent disappearance of urchins and abalone. These results indicate that the over-fishing of top-predators would have had massive ramifications for the rest of the ecosystem. Through dual empirical and modelling approaches, my study highlights the complexity of ecosystem interactions and the need for multispecies models in developing an ecosystem approach to fisheries management, and adds to the understanding of the causes and implications of human- and environmentally-induced shifts in community structure.

Chandranath, Swaminathan Irwin. "Comparitive activities and mechanisms of action of three novel antiulcer agents." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2000. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/21028/.

Full text
Abstract:
Antiulcer agents, notably inhibitors of gastric acid secretion, have been the most successful category of drugs to be discovered in recent years; and moreover, there are currently four such agents in the world list of top 25 best selling drugs. Histamine H2 antagonists have been the number one selling pharmaceutical product for more than a decade and inhibitors of the parietal cell HIC-ATPase, so called "proton pump inhibitors" (PPI), look set to continue this success. The proposed study was designed to establish the relative efficacy and mechanisms of action of three novel agents using both in vitro and in vivo models. The three compounds namely AG-1749 (Lansoprazole), PD-136450 and transforming growth factor alpha (TGF(x) were studied to evaluate their antisecretory and antiulccr activities. Lansoprazole, the second PPI to be developed for clinical use, is a non-competitive inhibitor of the H1C-ATPase and has recently been launched in a number of countries. PD-136450 is a competitive antagonist of central and peripheral cholecystokinin-B (CCK-B) receptors (gastrin receptor) and it under clinical development as an anxiolytic but which has actions on the stomach and pancreas. Anxiolytic drug is otherwise known as anti-anxiety drugs, which are used to treat anxiety disorders, like depression, panic disorders, phobias and many personality disorders. TOFu is a polypeptide growth factor, which acts at the EGF receptor and displays potent mitogenic and antisecretory activity. The initial study deals with the comparison of the three compounds with omeprazole and ranitidine in terms of their ability to inhibit acid secretion and their activity in a range of experimental ulcer models. Potency, duration of action and activity against a range of stimulants of acid secretion (histamine, pentagastrin and basal) was determined in anaesthetized rat models by establishing dose-response relationships. The compounds represent a spectrum of activities in as much as lansoprazole is a potent, long acting inhibitor, PD-136450 is an orally active but selective inhibitor, while TOFu has a very short duration and is only active after parenteral administration. In a view to find out the mechanism of action of these drugs on gastric acid secretion, isolated gastric glands from rabbits were employed as an in vitro technique using radiolabeled 14C-aminopyrine as a marker. The results show that lansoprazole was the most potent antisecretory agent compared to other two drugs. The second phase of the study deals with the activity of the three compounds against gastric ulcers induced by acid hypersecretion, indomethacin and stress. This study enabled us to assess the extent to which antisecretory activity per se compared with other actions such as wound healing (TGFa) or anxiolytic activity (PD-136450) contribute to ulcer healing. As other workers already established that prostaglandins and nitric oxide are involved in the cytoprotective activity, the present study investigated the influence of prostaglandin and nitric oxide by using indomethacin and L-NAME pretreatment on the cytoprotective activity of lansoprazole, PD-136450 and TGFcz. Moreover, the three drugs were tested for their activities on the mucus and bicarbonate production in the stomach. It was found that lansoprazole and TGFc increased the gastric mucus secretion while PD-136450 did not show any change. Moreover it was evidenced from this study that the protective activity of PD-136450 is associated with the influence of bicarbonate secretion from the pancreas. In conclusion, the results of this study have indicated that lansoprazole, PD- 136450 and TGFct are potent antisecretory and antiulcer agents which have great therapeutic importance.

Khan, Umair I. "Computational Techniques for Comparative Performance Evaluation of RF Localization inside the Human Body." Digital WPI, 2011. https://digitalcommons.wpi.edu/etd-theses/647.

Full text
Abstract:
Localization inside the human body using radio frequency (RF) transmission is gaining importance in a number of applications such as Capsule Endoscopy. The accuracy of RF localization depends on the technology adopted for this purpose. The two most common RF localization technologies use received signal strength (RSS) and time-of-arrival (TOA). This research presents a comparison of the accuracy of TOA and RSS based localization inside human tissue using computational techniques for simulation of radio propagation inside human tissues. Computer simulation of the propagation of radio waves inside the human body is extremely challenging and computationally intensive. We designed a basic, MATLAB coded, finite difference time-domain (FDTD) for the radio propagation in and around the human body and compared the results obtained from this software with the commonly used and commercially available Finite Element Method (FEM) modeling in Ansoft HFSS (ANSYS). We first show that the FDTD analysis yields comparable results. Then we use the software to simulate the RSS and TOA of the wideband signals propagated inside the human body for RF localization to compare the accuracies of the two methods. The accuracy of each technique is compared with the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) commonly used for calculation of bounds for the performance of localization techniques and the effects of human body movements.

Githiora, Yvonne. "A comparitive analysis of patterns of recent extinction in birds and mammals." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/4748.

Full text
Abstract:
Exploring past extinction patterns among taxa can inform us about risks facing currently threatened taxa if such extinctions have been non-random with respect to phylogeny and/or geographical patterns. This study analyses patterns of recent extinctions among birds and mammals in order to determine factors influencing these patterns and whether these factors differed between the two groups. Data on bird and mammal species that have become extinct since 1500, including their distributions and body-masses, were collected from diverse sources. GIS mapping was used to determine spatial patterns of species extinctions. The body-mass distributions of extinct species were also compared with body-mass distributions of samples of extant species. Patterns of extinction were found to differ geographically among birds and mammals. However, underlying factors influencing these patterns were found to be similar, with species endemism being an important predictor of recent extinctions. Recently extinct species were larger, on average, than extant species in both birds and mammals pointing to the influence of human over-exploitation in the extinctions. Invasive species, particularly mammals such as rats, were also an important driver, influencing species extinctions by preying on native birds and competing with native mammals of similar biology. These findings can most likely be extrapolated to reptiles, whose extinctions have been similarly influenced by invasive mammals but not necessarily to amphibians whose recent extinctions and declines are being driven primarily by a complex interaction of factors including emerging infectious diseases.

Darien, Lindsey Elizabeth Olivia. "Social capital and new localism : a comparitive study of two parish councils." Thesis, University of Kent, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.589933.

Full text
Abstract:
The theme of devolution has been taken up by the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition from May 2010. This study demonstrates the enduring nature of the problem of devolving responsibility. The primary concern is to make an original contribution to the literature on the development of new localism by focusing on two contrasting Kentish examples of networked community governance: Downswood Parish Council and Kings Hill Parish Council. Downswood Parish Council's structure of governance is representative of the sometimes difficult central-local relationship. At Kings Hill the dual struggle for power includes a third partner, the private service provider (developer of Kings Hill). The study seeks to show that traditional social capital theory provides few insights into citizens' motivations to invest in social capital as a public good. Theories of leadership and club goods are introduced to provide an explicit theoretical account of the links between social networks and individual motivations. It will be argued that these theories make it possible to depart from Robert Putnam's belief that social capital is a bottom-up initiative in governance. The main findings show that both models of parish governance are remarkably good at generating and mobilising/expanding social capital. But it has to be emphasised that it is not in the interest of those holding power to just give it up. Instead, once community activists have gained the residents' support it is up to them to take power, and at times be critical of government policy. This is exactly what the parish councillors did on several occasions.

Abstract:
This project developed methodology for in vitro toxicity assessment of contaminated sites using the Promega?? MTS [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxy-methoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium] assay performed on human cells (HepG2 and Skin fibroblasts). The project included the development of a method for extracting contaminants from soil based on leaching and centrifugation. A number of solvents and surfactants were assessed for their suitability as extracting agents. The Zwitterionic surfactant CHAPS ({3[(3-Cholamidopropyl) dimethylammonio] propanesulphonic acid}), which is an irritant in vivo, was found suitable for in vitro toxicity assessment applications. CHAPS was found to be the least toxic surfactant in vitro when tested on skin fibroblasts (NOEC: 1800??577 ppm, IC50: 4000??577 ppm) and HepG2 cells (NOEC: 833??289 ppm, IC50: 5300??287 ppm). The chosen surfactant was used in three different methods for extraction of Toluene and Xylene spiked in 2 g and 10g soil. The combination comprising of 0.1% (s/w) CHAPS and cosolvent 1% (w/w) Isopropanol, at their respective NOEC (No Observed Effective Concentration) toxicity values, showed good recovery of the nonpolar organic compounds in comparison to the recovery by 0.1% CHAPS and 0.5% CHAPS. The study found additive interactions to be the most common form of toxicity for 16 concentration combinations of Formaldehyde (polar), Toluene and Xylene (nonpolar) when compared to predicted toxicity (R2=0.943, P<0.0001). When assessing the in vitro toxicity of unknown (blind) contaminated soil samples, the Hazard Index (HI) predicted from the chemical analyses results showed a relatively good correlation (R2>0.7062, n=26) when compared to the experimental toxicity results on HepG2 cells. Furthermore, the comparison of Australian Health Investigation Levels (HIL) with in vitro toxicity testing gave similar correlation (R2>0.6882, n=26) on HepG2 cells. The overall project suggests the potential application of the zwitterionic surfactant (CHAPS) in sampling contaminants from soils in an in vitro toxicity assessment. This study demonstrates the application of in vitro toxicity assessment using human cells for the prediction of toxic risk as a sentinel to human toxicity from a contaminated site.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore the challenges women face for vertical mobility in politics in India and Sweden, the similarities and differences. Gender empowerment and equal opportunities are essential features for an egalitarian society, development, national and international peace. Promoting gender empowerment through women’s effective participation in politics is a structural interventional approach in social work. However studies show women face numerous obstacles in achieving political representation.  Gender inequality, inequitable division of labour, cultural attitudes, electoral systems are some reasons which subjugate women and limit their representation in public life. Sweden and India differ immensely in all of these factors and more. However, similarity in these nations is the low representation of women councillors in key decision making positions in governance; resulting in exclusion of women’s interests and issues in public policy. In-depth interviews conducted with six respondents from both nations analysed in a feministic framework reveal cultural, ideological, socio-economic and political structures as common challenges. Social work interventions in all these spheres can lead to sustainable empowerment for women. Abstract:
Thesis(DMed (Psychiatry))-- University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
Alcohol-induced psychotic disorder (also known as alcohol hallucinosis) is a complication of alcohol abuse that requires clinical differentiation from alcohol withdrawal delirium and schizophrenia. Although extensively described, few studies utilized standardized research instruments and brain-imaging has thus far been limited to case reports. The aim of this study was to prospectively compare four population groups (ie. patients with alcohol-induced psychotic disorder, schizophrenia, uncomplicated alcohol dependence and a healthy volunteer group) according to demographic, psychopathological and brainimaging variables utilizing (i) rating scales and (ii) single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The third component of the study was designed to investigate the (iii) effect of anti-psychotic treatment on the psychopathology and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) before and after six weeks of treatment with haloperidol. Effort was made to ensure exclusion of comorbid medical disorders, including substance abuse. The study provides further supportive evidence that alcohol-induced psychotic disorder can be distinguished from schizophrenia. Statistically significant differences in rCBF were demonstrated between the alcohol-induced psychotic disorder and other groups. Changes in frontal, temporal, parietal, occipital, thalamic and cerebellar rCBF showed statistically significant negative correlations with post-treatment improvement on psychopathological variables and imply dysfunction of these areas in alcohol-induced psychotic disorder. The study was unable to distinguish between pharmacological effects and improvement acccomplished by abstinence from alcohol.

Abstract:
After-school programs play an increasing role in providing developmental and social skills through extra-curricular activities. Adolescents are most likely to engage in delinquent behavior during unsupervised after-school hours. Different after-school programs are available, both community-based and faith-based programs have risen in number in response to the need of children to have a safe environment with adult supervision. This study is interested in comparing after-school programs that are faith-based to community-based and see if any similarities or differences exist within each other. The purpose of this thesis was to contribute to the existing literature on after-school programs in two ways. First, this research will provide a brief history of after-school programs and a discussion of the types of programs. Second, this study will compare and contrast the various goals, structure, and performance of a community-based program and a faith-based program. Through in-person interview, a comparison will be drawn on organizational structure, activities, source and funding, goals and objectives, and outcomes of each program.

Abstract:
In recent times, special economic zones have become a popular mode of promoting economic development in developing countries. Through SEZs China has achieved immense economic growth, a model, which a number of developing countries are trying to emulate. India followed suite in establishing SEZs, however, it has not been able to achieve the same success as China. In this paper, I perform a comparitive analysis between India and China and study the impact on economic development. By highlighting the differences between the SEZs in the two countries I explain the reason for China's immediate success and India's slow growth. I finally conclude that SEZs are a viable method of achieving economic development, especially for developing countries.

House, Melissa Kay. "A Comparitive Study of Minimum Disturbance Oil Industry Sites and Burned Sites in Bogs in Northern Alberta." OpenSIUC, 2011. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/738.

Full text
Abstract:
Disturbance plays integral role in the vegetative communities and succession in northern Alberta. Fire is the most common natural disturbance, and oil industry disturbance is a rapidly increasing anthropogenic disturbance on the landscape. In situ extraction of deep oil sands is increasing across Alberta, and with it, minimum disturbance sites used for seismic exploration and natural gas extraction also increase. To determine how these sites recover after disturbance, a 21 year chronosequence was established to address the following questions: 1) How do the plant communities differ between natural bogs, recently burned bogs, and bogs disturbed by `minimum disturbance petroleum industry activities? 2) How do the environmental conditions compare between undisturbed bogs, burned bogs, and bogs disturbed by `minimum disturbance' petroleum industry activities? 3) What is the revegetation pathway of minimum disturbance sites disturbed over the 21 year period? 4) What is the revegetation pathway of the burned bogs over the 21 year disturbance span? and 5) How does the (anthropogenic) minimum disturbance revegetation pathway compare to that of the (natural) fire disturbed bogs? To answer these questions 55 stands were sampled. The plant species were identified and abundance recorded, water chemistry was analyzed, shade recorded, depth to water measured, and oldest trees aged. Bog plant communities and environmental conditions at sites surveyed are similar to one another. Burned bogs were also similar in chemistry, vegetation, and physical traits of the sites. Minimum disturbance sites were quite varied in plant species and environmental conditions studied. A minimum disturbance revegetation could not be determined due to the amount variation in plant species and abundances between minimum disturbance sites of the same age. Burned bogs showed more predictable species interactions: Polytrichum strictum establishes early and subsequently declines. Sphagnum fuscum becomes dominant between 15 and 20 years after disturbance, and Picea mariana returns to burned sites between 1 and 5 years after fire and continues to increase in density. Minimum disturbance sites do not recover in a predictable manner, and some sites become rich fens. It is not clear if these sites will return to the pre-disturbance mature bog community, but burned bogs have a community closely resembling a mature bog after 20 years of revegetation. Documentation of pre-disturbance conditions and operational protocols is recommended in order to further understand sources of cation rich waters that could yield rich fen habitats.

Abstract:
In the 1830s, students at Oxford University began using the word coach as a slang expression for a tutor who carried a student through an exam (Coach, 2011). Nowadays, the word is seen as a metaphor for a person supporting another person to achieve an imagined goal (Johansson & Wahlund, 2009). Hilmarsson (2006) says that everyone acts as a coach from time to time, and Strandberg (2009) argues students in Sweden today want to be coached. However, it is hard to find schools where they claim they practice coaching. Because the word coach is ubiquitously used, many who today work with coaching are in fact inappropriately trained (Grant, 2010; Williams, 2008). Thus, by using a questionnaire as well as interviewing two students and a coach, I wanted to investigate whether coaching made any difference to how students perceived their English learning. 63 students and one coaching teacher participated in this study, where the findings demonstrated that there were other aspects which had a higher impact on students‟ perceptions of their English learning than the terminology used to describe the educational method practiced in their particular school.

A comparative study between the historic places of cities of Joao Pessoa, Brazil, and Tours, France was conducted. Our aim was to understand how these historic places are perceived by people, especially by the inhabitants. The study also aims to understand the value that the people will attribute to old buildings after his rehabilitation, related to the enhancement of cultural heritage, which functions as lifting axis of urban policies. An ethnographic analyses shows that both realities reveal not only differences but also similarities

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis, research results are reported on the role of dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline (DPPC) and DPPC-liposomes on the in vitro permeability characteristics of various antimycobacterial drugs across porcine bronchial tissue. The permeability flux values of the different compounds (isoniazid, ofloxacin and moxifloxacin) and their relevant DPPC formulations were determined using a continuous flow through perfusion system. Mean steady state flux values were compared statistically by means of a t-test at a significance level of 5% as well as an F-test using whole curve comparisons. The results indicated that the different formulations of drug and their DPPC combinations retard the permeation of drug through bronchial tissue. However, moxifloxacin permeation was significantly enhanced when in a DPPC-liposomal formulation. These results demonstrate the important role that molecular weight, electrostatic charge, partitioning of the molecules in DPPC and DPPC-liposomes play in transmembrane diffusion. In addition, the effect of individual drugs and their DPPC combinations on the surface tension lowering property of DPPC was evaluated. The results obtained showed minimal decreases in the surface tension lowering capability of DPPC; however, the minimal increases in surface tension do not alter the integrity of DPPC to a large extent. Drug susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis cultures against the individual antitubercular drugs and their DPPC combinations was done by using the Radiometric BACTEC 460TB™ system. Drug-entrapped DPPC liposomes were tested at concentrations comparable to their relative minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). The results for the BACTEC assay indicated that the mycobacteria were susceptible to the developed drug entrapped liposomes; of which their encapsulation efficiencies for the relevant drugs were approximately ± 50%. It was concluded that drug-entrapped DPPC liposomes could fulfill the dual role of pulmonary drug delivery and alveolar stabilization due to antiatelectatic effect of DPPC which can improve the distribution of anti-tubercular drugs in the lung

Full text
Abstract:
As a contribution to the understanding of comparative social trends within the cetacean family Delphinidae, a 22-month study was conducted on the short-finned pilot whale, Globicephala macrorhynchus, which has been suggested to have a unique social system in which males and females in the same group are related and mating occurs outside of the group. The individual identification of 495 pilot whales, analysed in daily group association patterns, allowed identification of 46 pods. They were classified as productive or nonproductive based on the presence or absence of immature animals. Productive pods were significantly larger, although 12% of them lacked adult males. Two classes of whales (residents and visitors) were defined by patterns of occurrence, suggesting differential patterns of habitat use. Resident pods occasionally travelled together (41% of all groups) and associations between age and sex classes showed that in mixed-pod groups, the highest ranked associations of the reproductive females were with males from other pods, while within pods, adult males and females associated less. During summer, the proposed peak conception period, pilot whale groups were significantly larger and contained individuals from a significantly greater number of pods. These fihdings support the hypothesis that males and females mate when associating with individuals from other pods. A comparative analysis of sexual dimorphism, brain size, and testes size, habitat, prey and group size within the 17 delphinid genera identified a correlation between sexual dimorphism and body size, but relative measures of brain size and testes size did not correlate with broad ecological or social classifications. However, a comparison of three delphinid societies identified two distinct male mating systems: males of the small, mono-morphic Tursiops truncatus live in age/sex segregated groups and mate with a number of discrete female communities. Males in the large sexually dimorphic Globicephala spp. and Orcinus area mate with associated female pods and yet remain with their female kin. This corresponds to the avunculate social system described in some human societies. It could evolve from a promiscuous mating system where there is little guarantee of paternity and where males that live with their kin increase their inclusive fitness.

Abstract:
The source water for the Moorhead Water Treatment Plant (MWTP) exhibits high concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC) throughout the year and seasonal taste and odor (T&O) events. To prevent biological regrowth in the distribution system there is a need to improve organics removal in the existing biological anthracite-sand filters, especially during cold water conditions when a significant decrease in removal efficiencies are observed. Three types of granular activated carbon (GAC) were selected for a pilot study to evaluate the potential of enhanced organics and T&O removal in biological activated carbon (BAC) filters compared to anthracite-sand. Turbidity removal was also evaluated to ensure regulatory requirements could be met with BAC filters. The overall performance of the BAC filters demonstrated a significant improvement over anthracite-sand. The bituminous coal-based GACs outperformed the coconut-based GAC and exhibited surface characteristics which may have a significant impact on the removal of organics, T&O, and turbidity.

Abstract:
The first part of this work reports a comparative study on electrochromic properties of two Donor-Acceptor-Donor (DAD) type polymers, namely poly(2-heptyl-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-benzo[d]imidazole) (BImTh) and poly(4,7-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-2-heptyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole) (BImEd). DAD type polymers are designed to bear the same acceptor unit, benzimidazole and two different donor units, thiophene and 3,4-ethylenedioxy thiophene (EDOT) to make a comparison based on the donor unit effect. The resulting polymers are both multichromic and have low band gap values (1.93 eV for PBImTh and 1.74 eV for PBImEd). In the second part, 4,7-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-2-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BImBEd) is synthesized. In order to figure out the presence of an intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the amine bond of the imidazole ring and the oxygen of the EDOT molecule, different amounts of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and concentrated sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solutions were added during electrochemical polymerization. These treatments caused protonation of the imine and deprotonation of the amine bonds respectively. In order to prove the changes in the optical properties of the polymers due to different number of protonated and deprotonated imine and amine bonds, 1,4-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)benzene (BEDOT-B) was also synthesized and treated with the same procedures. Results showed that it is possible to control the main chain conformation of even an insoluble polymer via acid and base treatments during in situ polymerization.

Abstract:
This thesis offers a comparative study of Acre and Alexandria during the 12th and 13th centuries. The comparison draws on the similarities and differences between both cities. However, particular focus is given to some specific aspects in their history, especially through a study of the main players in conflicts and forms of exchange, and the impact and consequences of these on both cities as well as on the Eastern Mediterrranean. During the Latin domination of the Holy Land, Acre and Alexandria initially seem very different from one another because they were part of two distinct societies at this time. Acre was governed by a foreign elite. The town’s quarters evolved with the conflicts which opposed the different western factions inside the city, as well as the privileges that these groups received from the King of Jerusalem. Alexandria, on the other hand, remained an oriental city on which the Crusades had very little impact. This comparative study offers a broader view of their history, showing other differences between them as well as similarities in their historical development. The sources available for this research show important topographic development in Acre and Alexandria during the 13th century. They also contain information about the institutions allotted to support the local elites as well as on the evolving role of Acre and Alexandria within different networks and areas (the Mediterranean, nearby port cities, the immediate hinterland, trade and pilgrimage routes) in periods of political change, military conquests, but also of technical progress

Traditionally human resource functions are performed in house, but recently the subject on outsourcing human resources is becoming more and more popular. According to an article published in 2004 by the INC. 500 magazine, 18 human resource service providers were chosen to be the most fast growing corporations in the US, in the mean time, the Fortune 500 and Forbes 500 corporations lists both had human resource business process outsourcing firms listed inside. The development of global temporary help service industry has been around for more than fifty years and the growth rate of temporary help industry in each country has been increasing steadily. Meanwhile, the Executive Yuan of Taiwan has chosen this business as one of the most industry among its 12 selected important developing service industries. The competition in temporary help has getting more and more severe than usual, but restricted to its uncompleted legal regulation, there are many staffing vendor didn’t obey the legal regulation, besides the difference between temporary help service and outsourcing is still ambigious. In this study, case study approach and the in-depth interview technique were employed. The main objective is to find out what current difficulties are the temporary help agencies facing and what kind of solution do they use to cope with the business needs. Furthermore, by applying relevant solution to form the suggestions to provide to staffing industry for the operation reference The inference of this study is that Taiwan is more cost oriented compared with other countries in US, Japan and Germany in the consideration of using temporary help service; as for the development of professional temporary help service, there is no clear definition on it, besides, the temporary help service agency in Taiwan is not yet able to provide this service. The temporary help service agencies in Japan expect relevant law in temporary help service can be loosen to develope this industry better, the temporary help service agencies in Taiwan expect a clearer definition between responsibility and obligation in user enterprise and temporary help service agency. The pricing war in this industry in Taiwan would form the barrier of better service due to limited profit while other countries had understood different service level deserves different price. New pension policy implemented in Taiwan in 2004 would encourage more enterprises understand the advantage of using temporary help service, but not definitely boost the promising development of this industry.

Peacock, R. "Identity development of the incarcerated adolescent : a comparitive analysis." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/58971.

Full text
Abstract:
The plight of the incarcerated adolescent has been mostly ignored throughout the centuries. Adolescence is perceived as the most critical developmental stage to achieve a personal identity, necessitated by the need to acquire new coping skills, particularly, in a complex society undergoing large scale socio-political transformation. In a prison environment marked by overcrowding, deviant subcultures, role stripping and loss of goods and autonomy, incarceration could, however, undermine feelings of uniqueness, self-value and a normative identity. Due to a dearth of research on the identity development of the incarcerated adolescent, exploratory, descriptive, explanatory and comparative analyses were conducted. Erikson's psychosocial theory served to guide this research. Through purposive sampling 83 incarcerated adolescent male research participants were included in this study. On the basis of the literature a questionnaire was developed that tested quantitatively a number of variables in relation to a quantitative assessment of the level of identity achieved by the research participants. Their level of identity development was assessed and compared with regard to the committing of different types of offences, parent-child and peer relationships, race and ethnic group, discrimination, and the relationship between the prison environment, the inmate code, prison victimisation, deviant group integration (prison gangs), treatment programs and individual identity development. Descriptive statistical analyses were utilised to describe the general characteristics of scores in the sample and to organise, summarise and visualise the data (frequency distributions, means and standard deviations). The inferential tests served to compare the levels of identity development of the research participants, and refer to the t-test, ANOVA, Correlation and Factor analysis. A Cronbach alpha of the Erikson scale was calculated that showed that the measuring instrument was reliable. Analyses of the data revealed that the offending behaviour and subsequent incarceration of the research participants deprived them of an opportunity to create a psychosocial moratorium, thereby "arresting" greater interpersonal differentiation. In accordance with the process of epigenesis their delinquency could be viewed furthermore as a residue of a basic mistrust in themselves and others, a lack of belief in the future, their role and value confusion together with a lack of purpose and direction. In a deprived, hostile and isolated prison environment the findings of this study highlight in particular the compensatory nature of the prison gang in relation to the provision of an identity pathway, identity capital and a collective identity. Prison victimisation was a prevalent and pervasive feature of the institutional life of the research participants. Concerning the relationship between their victimisation and identity development, two significant correlations were established. Incarcerated adolescents with higher levels of identity development are less likely to be the victims of assault by more than one inmate at the same time or to be gang raped by other inmates. Research participants with a lower level of identity development are also more likely to exercise and use weights to enhance physical strength and to sleep as an escape mechanism. On the other hand, research participants who obtained a higher level of identity development are more likely to employ a strategy of keeping quiet when provoked. The items that reached the set level of statistical significance concurred with both the features and general adjustment ability of a more stable sense of self-definition and the features of identity consciousness rooted in doubt and shame that counteracts and complicates a personal sense of autonomy. The research participant, who has obtained a higher level of identity, is thus more able to contain himself when provoked, while the less self-directed incarcerated utilises more aggressive precautions to deter prison victimisation (physical strength and endurance training) or opts for sleeping as an escape mechanism. No significant statistical correlation was established between participation in treatment programmes and the level of identity development of the research participants. Recommendations for further research were formulated focusing on the plight of the incarcerated adolescent. It was concluded that the uniqueness and fluidity of responses during the critical developmental stage of adolescence needs to be appreciated. The chronological young and vulnerable developmental age of the incarcerated adolescent, his particular susceptibility to conform, together with his need to feel accepted and his general quest for behavioural directives, may render him in particular vulnerable to societal strain, institutional and interpersonal victimisation as well as subsequent devaluation of his identity.

This thesis is based on the study of architectural morphology. It deals with the geometrical structure of some residential buildings designed by R.M.Schindler and F.L.Wright, two notable architects in the history of modern architecture. The study consists of two parts. The first part is to explore the background and sources of the two architects. The second part is to examine and analyze the morphological attributes of geometrical structure underlying the selected architectural plans. The morphological attributes include unit system, polyrhythm, symmetry, musicality, proportion and geometrical hierarchy, and these attributes are interrelated. In the firstpart of the study, it is found that both of the two architects were influenced by the architectural theorist "Gottfried Semper" and the Classical architecture. Nevertheless, Wright followed the classical doctrine and Schindler, on the contrary, was opposed to them in many cases. In the second part of the study, a number of differences regarding the morphological attribues of the geometrical structure are found. Finally, nine conclusions are derived. The exploration of the works by the members of the Wright Family (e.g. Neutra, Goff, Soriano and Jones) is suggested as future study.

Land reform in Southern Africa has attracted a lot of attention from sovereign third world government and those of developed countries. This followed the invasion of commercial farms in Zimbabwe and has a bearing on Zimbabwe’s neighbours especially Namibia and South Africa. This paper examines why governments at times adhere to land reform within the rule of law and at times does not, resulting in strained donor-government relations. A comparison of government-donor relations in Zimbabwe and Namibia is explored. The crux of the argument is that land reform is damaging when the rule of law is flouted by governments. Strained relations are a result of ineffective agencies of restraint, lack of commitment by the governments, external donors and white commercial farmers to correct land injustices that came into existence as a result of settler colonialism.

ABSTRACT: The intensive concept of civil law covers the rights of credit, property, inheritance base on the status as relatives, consumer protection and commercial law, etc. The intention of civil law is to seek for the solution of the problems caused by the motivation or purpose of obtaining money to discharge the debts, which is the main argument of the majority of criminal proceedings. The biggest problem people have for the judicial system is its public credibility and the poor efficiency. It’s because of the fact that people is not familiar with the law enough and can not expect to be satisfied with their main purpose of obtaining money by the irrevocable civil judgment after such lengthy litigation and non-litigation in the court. Thereby, to achieve this ultimate target, applying the “Compulsory execution proceedings “ maybe the most powerful and the only way to go. Via observing the content of the Compulsory execution law, the executing court is authorized to exercise power, but in fact, the petitioners and the creditors are actually the ones in control of such. By law, the subject of the execution of property and the real estate is fairly clear, however, the incorporeal property can be the subject of execution as well. There are only a few words as general regulations for this issue, which is far from enough to apply in practice in the “Compulsory execution law”. It makes the way of fulfilling the right of credit full of obstacles. With the economics thriving and prosperous, the property derived from a wide variety of types. The range and the amount of incorporeal property and the other property will be over it of tangible property .For such problems which are not governed by the current law can only be examined on a case-by-case basis. During my 20-year experience in practice, there’s a good chance to have concerns of the subject of execution and even the court could not confirm the right way of execution of the other property rights. This paper will try to categorize the subject of the other property rights by sorting the current regulations, referring to the real case in practice and figure out the possible solutions. Meanwhile, the increasing commercial activities between the strait has made it common to both parties be the creditors for each other. In China, the subject or the proceedings of execution is relatively sketchy and far differ from ROC due to unclear regulations and poor legal interpretation; Especially for the subject of “other property “, the priority of the credit payment in ROC is in accordance with the basis of the progress of execution, then pay the credit by the rules of equity with cash. All above are important factors to support us to do the comparative research of the civil compulsory execution against other property rights for China/ROC, and hope to find out the realistic solutions for both parties in practice.
