Abstract:
Competitive advantage is influenced by dual mechanical system: endogenous system and exogenous competitive system. Compared with uncontrollable exogenous competitive elements, endogenous competitive elements exerting structural competitive advantage is of vital importance for companies to battle against disadvantages and achieve competitive advantaged independently. Endogenous competitive elements comprise: firm culture, dynamic capabilities, and complementary assets. At the strategic level, firm culture influences firm decisions; at the organizational level, dynamic capabilities create core competence of a corporation; at the practice level, complementary assets erect barriers to competitors. This study empirically analyzed Firm Sayyas, a leading firm in wooden windows industry having encountered countless structural changes of competitive elements, to uncover how SMEs can achieve competitive advantage. The empirical analysis shows that, cultivating endogenous competitive elements based on “firm culture, dynamic capabilities, and complementary assets” in the dynamic competition is an effective way to maintain SMEs’ competitive advantages.

Abstract:
Abstract: In supporting infrastructure development and housing needs, cement is one of the more widely used strategic commodities. Improvement of infrastructure and property development in Indonesia is caused by an increase in good economic growth in Indonesia. This is the main attraction for both domestic and foreign investors to further enliven the cement industry in Indonesia. Competition occurs between old players and new players who have plans and are building new factories. In addition to PT X in Indonesia there are also 6 (six) other cement companies and 8 (eight) new companies that will invest in the same field which causes competition among the cement industry players to increase. Facing this development, every company is required to be able to develop and evaluate competitiveness by utilizing existing resources to maintain a sustainable competitive advantage in industrial competition. One way to analyze a company's sustainable competitive advantage is to conduct a resource-based view analysis using the VRIO framework. The purpose of conducting a resource based view analysis is to find out whether resources are owned and managed, including in competitive disadvantage, competitive parity, temporary competitive advantage or sustainable competitive advantage. Based on the results of data analysis and discussion of the results of the study, it can be concluded that the resource-based strategy in supporting the achievement of sustainable competitive advantages in PT X is stated to have been proven. A resource-based strategy that includes financial, physical, organizational, technological, human, innovation and reputation resources described in the conclusion of this study is the result that PT X's resources are an important factor in sustainable competitive advantage. Keywords: resources based strategy, sustainable competitive advantage, intangible resources, tangible resources, VRIO framework

Abstract:
Competitive advantage (CA) is an intuitively evident concept which has been widely used in theoretical research in strategy. But CA's diffuse image and its dynamic nature make it a difficult concept to apply. The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive (or macro) CA construct capable of being applied in an empirical manner across a broad spectrum of business situations. This objective required both an adequate grounding of the CA concept within its nomological- net of theories and a new operationalization approach.

Abstract:
Home field advantage remains one of the least understood phenomenon in sports. Much effort has been put into testing the different components that contribute to the phenomenon, but a clear explanation is lacking. The purpose of the present paper is to provide a better understanding of home field advantage by analyzing previous literature and experiments on the topic. The paper will also organize the major components involved in home field advantage by updating Courneya and Carron’s conceptual framework. The paper will explain the importance of studying the topic and will highlight significant experiments that have produced contradictory results. Lastly, the paper will focus on the critical psychological states of the competitors, as it remains the least understood component of the aggregate study. Abstract:
Adopting a triangulated approach, this thesis consists of three separate but related qualitative studies, the collective objectives of which are to (i) gauge current levels of concern of Australian public universities with rapid intensification of the higher education sector globally; (ii) evaluate strategies developed by universities in response to increasing competition; and (iii) develop a conceptual framework to guide competitive behaviour of universities. Study 1 is a systematic content analysis of published strategic plans of universities using Leximancer (Version 2.20). Relative prominence of concepts identified in this content analysis give rise to propositions relating both to levels of concern with competition and strategies being implemented to protect market position. In Study 2, these propositions are tested in a sample of the universities by means of case studies based on face-to-face interviews with senior academics and administrators. Study 3 draws upon findings of Studies 1 and 2 to develop a strategic model to guide future strategy development. Overall, findings of the studies provide valuable insights into the management of higher education in a dynamic environment in which the intensity of competition is likely to escalate as the pace of globalisation and technological change quickens, as deregulation of the domestic higher education sector continues, as per capita funding is further reduced, as even greater elements of competition and contestability are introduced in the interests of productivity and efficiency, and as overseas student demand slackens in traditional markets.

Allan, Andrew C. "The determinants of competitive advantage : a critical appraisal." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2887.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis deals with the means whereby a firm can gain a competitive advantage over its rivals. After considering how this issue is dealt with in the management literature, the thesis focuses on two possible routes to competitive advantage. The first is largely internal to the firm, and concerns the design of managerial contracts to provide managers with the incentives to act in the best interests of shareholders. The second route is external, involving strategic market moves in relation to rival firms. These two possible routes to competitive advantage are appraised in light of recent theoretical developments in 1principal-agent analysis the internal route, and the new industrial economics the external route. The final section of the thesis is empirical and deals with the share price experience of the top 100 U. K. companies since 1970. The econometric notion of cointegration is employed to test for the existence of sustained competitive advantage. The tentative conclusion reached is that while companies may be able to achieve a sustained competitive advantage, the compensation contracts employed have not been a successful means of obtaining such advantage. The suggestion is that external routes to competitive advantage might be more effective.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter the domain of relationship management (RM) is discussed and the notion of the RM mid-range theory is introduced. The first section highlights the socio-economic duality of RM and presents the core characteristics of the RM business model. The diversity of partly overlapping relational constructs is commented on, and a uniform semantic programme for RM is proposed that links the notion of relationship capital and three RM dimensions: structural, psychological and behavioral. In the second section, the role of mid-range theories in linking macro and micro theoretical levels is presented. The theoretical boundaries (the content) of the envisioned RM mid-range theory are outlined, which link the RM business model, the key relational activities and approaches, and business performance. A hypothetical system of theories for competitive advantage is drafted, where the general theory level is occupied by the Resource-Advantage Theory of Competition followed by the upper mid-range theory level; where the RM mid-range theory is placed, completed by the specific market type mid-range theory level; and where network-based and market-based relational theories are positioned.

Full text
Abstract:
Both liquids pipeline and natural gas transportation companies have been confronted with increasing competition over the past several years. Shippers have become far more demanding, insisting that transporters provide more cost effective rates. As a result, pipeline companies are under increased pressure to reduce transportation rates. This scenario is also true for regulated pipelines where shippers are joining forces to pressure transporters to be more creative in their ways of doing business so they can provide lower tolls. In order to assess their current cost structures and identify the most appropriate areas of their business to focus improvement efforts, pipeline companies have benchmarked their performance against competitors and leaders in the industry. Companies have used the results from these benchmarking studies for several purposes: a) understand cost / activity driver relationships; b) obtain empirical versus anecdotal information; c) assess their current level of performance; d) identify opportunities for improvement, focusing efforts on areas with the greatest potential for cost reductions; e) establishing realistic performance improvement targets; f) challenge corporate “myths and legends”; and g) provide insights into leading business practices that have been used by other companies to improve efficiencies. Results from the benchmarking studies suggest that the pipeline industry is, in general, reacting to this pressure for lower transportation costs. Over the past three years, based on a sample of North American pipeline companies, both liquids and gas pipelines have reported improvements in operating costs on a unitized/normalized basis. These cost reductions have resulted from focusing improvement efforts on key areas of the business where performance was not up to industry standards. Modifying business practices in these areas has been critical in assisting these organizations in reducing costs. This paper will present a comprehensive approach to conducting pipeline benchmarking studies. Actual performance results for both gas transportation and liquids carriers will be discussed. The results will focus both on current cost levels as well as industry trends. In addition, it will provide insights into initiatives that have been successful in helping reduce cost structures, moving them towards being the “shipper of choice”.

Abstract:
Development in the spa industry is going through difficulties caused by the world situation of tourism recovery. In days of compliance with anti-epidemic measures and social distance, the restoration of the spa offer will be based on innovative solutions for diversity in the spa services and products. This is the challenge of more enterprising and resourceful professionals in business to avoid the struggle for survival. One of their main fulcrums is reorientation towards non-price competition, which is based on the distinctive features of the product. Either it consists of innovative product design or mere market segmentation, product differentiation typically involves externalities across competitors, which clearly play an important role in firm's competitive incentives to invest in differentiation. The purpose of this report is through research and analysis of supply and development in spas, to prove the hypothesis that the diversity of spa products and services is fundamental to recovering in a highly competitive and further financially aggravated, current environment in tourism.

Due to the complex and close interaction of banks with other economic units, any trouble in banking sector might have repercussion on the whole economy which makes the market structure and competition in banking sector as a cynosure. Business world is facing gradually increasing competition. It seems that the existence of firms depends on the power and the advantage of their competitiveness. The purpose of this study is to analyze the competition structure and the market conditions of Turkish banking system. despite the existence of a number of studies about competition in banking sector, there is still a lack of the studies which has been done with Lerner's Index. Due to this fact, Lerner’s Indeks is used in this study. Bank level determinants of Lerner Index is analysed using Panel Data Regression Method and was reached to factors effecting competitive behavior in Turkish Banking Sector.

Abstract:
Aggregators are platforms that also control a marketplace for the suppliers’ innovations. Suppliers competing within aggregators are limited by the technology and governance rules of the platform owner. As a consequence, aggregators influence the type and complexity of competitive moves suppliers can implement. Our research investigates the drivers of suppliers’ competitive advantage. We incorporate existing literature on competitive action to identify the categories of moves available to suppliers. Furthermore, we identify three types of orthogonal moves that are unique to competition within aggregators. Finally, we illustrate our advanced categorization in the context of a major food delivery platform. Our preliminary results confirm that suppliers, while bounded to resources exposed by the aggregator, have the opportunity to implement an heterogenous portfolio of moves in their pursuit of competitive advantage. This result calls for empirical research in the context of competition within aggregators in general, and food delivery platforms specifically.

Abstract This paper presents an approach wherein product design is viewed as a selection process with two main stages: design alternative generation and design alternative evaluation. The focus of this paper is mainly on a design alternative evaluation model in that designer’s preferences, customers’ preferences, and market competition are accounted for in order to select the best possible design. In the model, uncertainties in the product design life, market size and its yearly change, cost and its yearly change, price, and discount rate are considered. Product design selection of a cordless screwdriver is used as a demonstration example. However, the emphasis in the example is on the approach, and not on the details per se.

Abstract:
The relationship between performance and innovation is covered most extensively in neoclassical economic theory and Schumpeterian approach. These two approaches explain the relationship between innovation and performance in different ways. The neoclassical theory predicts that innovation emerges in competitive markets while Schumpeterian approach predicts it will emerge in imperfect competitive markets. Using data for the period 2008-2013, this study investigates the relationship between innovation and competition level in the Turkish Manufacturing Industry. Data analyzing method is Two-Step System Generalized Moments of Method. Performance variables of the study are net profit margin, return on assets and return on equity. R&D intensity is innovation indicator. Industrial competition level is measured by Herfindahl-Hirsckman Index. The results of Two-Step System Generalized Method of Moments analysis show that R&D intensity affects positively performance variables in contrast one lag of R&D effects negatively. Furthermore, competition intensity also improves performance. Positive coefficient of R&D variable supports the view of innovation has the characteristics of providing competitive advantage. The negative coefficient of R&D lag indicates the problems related to the protection of intellectual property right. This finding can be interpreted that innovation operations are imitated approximately after a period. The positive effect of competition intensity supports the prediction of Schumpeterian approach.
