Abstract:
Competitive advantage (CA) is an intuitively evident concept which has been widely used in theoretical research in strategy. But CA's diffuse image and its dynamic nature make it a difficult concept to apply. The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive (or macro) CA construct capable of being applied in an empirical manner across a broad spectrum of business situations. This objective required both an adequate grounding of the CA concept within its nomological- net of theories and a new operationalization approach.

Abstract:
Home field advantage remains one of the least understood phenomenon in sports. Much effort has been put into testing the different components that contribute to the phenomenon, but a clear explanation is lacking. The purpose of the present paper is to provide a better understanding of home field advantage by analyzing previous literature and experiments on the topic. The paper will also organize the major components involved in home field advantage by updating Courneya and Carron’s conceptual framework. The paper will explain the importance of studying the topic and will highlight significant experiments that have produced contradictory results. Lastly, the paper will focus on the critical psychological states of the competitors, as it remains the least understood component of the aggregate study. Abstract:
Adopting a triangulated approach, this thesis consists of three separate but related qualitative studies, the collective objectives of which are to (i) gauge current levels of concern of Australian public universities with rapid intensification of the higher education sector globally; (ii) evaluate strategies developed by universities in response to increasing competition; and (iii) develop a conceptual framework to guide competitive behaviour of universities. Study 1 is a systematic content analysis of published strategic plans of universities using Leximancer (Version 2.20). Relative prominence of concepts identified in this content analysis give rise to propositions relating both to levels of concern with competition and strategies being implemented to protect market position. In Study 2, these propositions are tested in a sample of the universities by means of case studies based on face-to-face interviews with senior academics and administrators. Study 3 draws upon findings of Studies 1 and 2 to develop a strategic model to guide future strategy development. Overall, findings of the studies provide valuable insights into the management of higher education in a dynamic environment in which the intensity of competition is likely to escalate as the pace of globalisation and technological change quickens, as deregulation of the domestic higher education sector continues, as per capita funding is further reduced, as even greater elements of competition and contestability are introduced in the interests of productivity and efficiency, and as overseas student demand slackens in traditional markets.

Allan, Andrew C. "The determinants of competitive advantage : a critical appraisal." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2887.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis deals with the means whereby a firm can gain a competitive advantage over its rivals. After considering how this issue is dealt with in the management literature, the thesis focuses on two possible routes to competitive advantage. The first is largely internal to the firm, and concerns the design of managerial contracts to provide managers with the incentives to act in the best interests of shareholders. The second route is external, involving strategic market moves in relation to rival firms. These two possible routes to competitive advantage are appraised in light of recent theoretical developments in 1principal-agent analysis the internal route, and the new industrial economics the external route. The final section of the thesis is empirical and deals with the share price experience of the top 100 U. K. companies since 1970. The econometric notion of cointegration is employed to test for the existence of sustained competitive advantage. The tentative conclusion reached is that while companies may be able to achieve a sustained competitive advantage, the compensation contracts employed have not been a successful means of obtaining such advantage. The suggestion is that external routes to competitive advantage might be more effective.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims at providing explanations about the currency's role in creating and sustaining competitive advantage, both at the national and international levels. For this purpose, the present work will try to carry out a multidisciplinary analysis involving the economic and the business administration sciences. Because we believe the best way to understand the functioning of the national and international competitive dynamics, and how the currency affects this dynamic, goes through a multidisciplinary approach, seeking to present how the administration theories are linked to the economic theories. Thus, we hope to develop an explanatory model for these phenomena, whose coverage is the greatest possible regarding the different economies and their respective industries. Therefore, we will study, through a qualitative and deductive analysis, how the currency can affect, positively or negatively, the competitive dynamics in different scenarios, that is, we do not seek to carry out a baseline study work. We pursue a theory that can be applied in practice, so that managers can build their competitive strategies based on the most complete information possible concerning the competitive dynamics of their respective industries. Finally, this dissertation aims at proposing an initial study to justify the privatization of money as originally proposed by F. A. Hayek in 1976, since we understand that free choice of means of payment is one of the strategic planning tools that managers can use to leveraging the competitive advantage of companies, particularly in the context of the international economy.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The increased rate of competitive challenges imposed on organisations by global economy, technological product changes, processes (Dixon, 1992; Dodgson, 1993), and abundance of information available (Huber 1991) necessitate organisations to unlearn, learn and relearn faster than others to survive. The development of sustainable competitive advantages is a vital management function and an important organisational requirement is to nurture learning and create new knowledge enabling organisations to exploit, develop and utilise resources better than rivals do. This paper originated from the need identified in my company that learning and use of new knowledge are essential elements to sustain competitive advantage. At the moment this is not the case and the challenges imposed on the organisation regarding technological advancements and rapid local and global environmental changes, has already negatively impacted the organisation's competitive position. Today learning is being experiences as just another expense and the use of new knowledge is not visible, as a matter of fact knowledge is being confused with information. Information is being "recycled"; in other words more of the same is shared and used within the organisation. Hardly any new knowledge is generated as the same minds that created problems are being used to solve them. In my opinion both learning and knowledge are strategic organisational requirements which must be nurtured and managed to (i) ensure return on investments, and (ii) strengthen the organisations future competitive position. The focus of the paper is to contribute to a deeper understanding of learning and knowledge, the linkage between individuals, organisations and learning loop approaches. Barriers preventing learning and use of knowledge will be identified as well as how the use of knowledge forms the foundation to achieve sustained competitive advantages to outsmart, outmaneuver and outwit the competition. Keywords: Knowledge; learning; organisational learning; competitive advantage; learning approaches, organisational barriers.

Gerber, Werner Hugo. "Enhancing the competitive advantage of the South African cultivated abalone industry." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/49946.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MSc(Agric))--University of Stellenbosch, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The pnmary alm of this study was to investigate the national competitive advantage of the South African abalone industry. A further aim was therefore to investigate the environment, in which the South-African abalone industry operates. Secondary aims included presenting a detailed description of the roleplayers in the South African abalone industry, and considering whether the South African abalone industry can be made more competitive and, if so, how this can be achieved. The achievement of these aims required a framework to establish which data is necessary for the task. The framework selected involved a combination of Porter's Five Forces analysis and Diamond Model. The study suggests that South African abalone firms should promote South African abalone more actively, invest more funds in human resources, and that the industry's faith in government needs to be restored, which can be achieved by improving the services offered by public institutions like the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Marine and Coastal Management (M&CM).

Makumbila, Louis Boy. "Supplier development for competitive advantage in manufacturing small medium enterprises." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/18102.

Full text
Abstract:
Competitive advantage is crucial for a business to be sustainable, yet many small- and medium-sized enterprises are not engaging in supplier development in order to achieve a competitive advantage. This empirical study was conducted on a sample of 64 small- and medium-sized enterprises in the manufacturing industry in Kempton Park, Gauteng. The factors that influence engagement in supplier development were analysed to assess whether supplier development can lead to competitive advantage and other benefits. The findings indicate that supplier development can create and improve competitive advantage, as well as lead to other benefits. Four factors were found to have a relationship with supplier development, and therefore could influence the decision to take part in supplier development. Small- and medium-sized enterprises can use tools such as supplier development in order to be competitive and have an advantage over their competitors. The awareness of operational performance measures, competitive advantage, judgment of the absence or existence of trust, and a buyer’s relative power can all influence participation in supplier development.

Abstract:
Present theories of retail strategic planning and retail evolution are unsatisfactory in explaining the dynamics of retail competition. Strategic planning procedure, it is argued, follows models such as the product-mission matrix and the generic strategy. However, these theories are limited to the corporate level and do not model either the complex market situations influencing the retail industry is getting complicated, the studies of retail development need a theory to explain both retail strategic analysis and planning and the dynamics of retail competition. Theories of retail evolution, or theories of the retail institutional change, e.g. the wheel or retailing, the retail accordion theory and the retail life cycle, are more appropriate for capturing the dynamics of retail competition. These theories of retail organisational, or format, change have been developed to model the retail development in Western countries but may be not suitable for explaining retail development in Western countries but may be not suitable for explaining retail development in Western countries but may be not suitable for explaining retail development in other countries, e.g., East Asian countries. An example of these East Asian countries is Taiwan. Since the 1970s, modern retail formats, such as the large-scale department store, the supermarket, the convenience store and the hypermarket, have transformed Taiwanese’ shopping behaviour and retail operation. However, there are few English language studies related to the changes and performance of the retail industry in this market. Resource-Advantage theory proposed by Hunt may offer an alternative framework of retail competition analysis, especially in non-Western societies. Thus this research has three main purposes: 1). To explore the applicability of Resource-Advantage theory to explaining retail competition and development; 2). To provide empirical evidence for Resource-Advantage theory; 3). To provide detail analyses of the convenience store development in Taiwan.

Managers use strategic planning in order to design the ways to get the organizational goals. In a competitive environment the organizations aim to overcome their competitors and to obtain superior financial performance. In order to reach this superior financial performance, the organizations manage their resources so as they can obtain a position of competitive advantage in the marketplace. Thus, the resource management is an important activity in the organizations and the internal analysis is a process that can support this activity. Methods and frameworks to support strategic analyses are no novelty in the business environment. In different intensities these structures of analyses are built up from theoretical knowledge and concepts. In this thesis it is proposed a set of steps to facilitate the strategic competitive planning of organizations. This set of steps was turned into a managerial framework of organizations internal analysis, using the Resource-Advantage Theory as theoretical basis. Thus, the main goal of this thesis was to develop a method, departing from the resource concept, for internal analysis of companies that are embedded in a context of market competition. Exploratory and qualitative research was carried out. Departing from literature review related to the theme, a preliminary method of internal analysis was built then validated and improved by means of collected data from field research. The field research consisted of six case studies with companies working in the area of agrochemicals industry in Brazil. The final version of the internal analysis method is made of six steps. The study contributes theoretically by discussing several concepts related to the Resource-Based Theory and the Resource-Advantage Theory. As a result, the study proposes a way of operationalization of the resource concept (that is a gap observed by some authors). Managerially speaking, the study contributes by providing the administrators with a method of analysis that supports decisions related to organizational resources management.

Abstract:
Background: With the appearance of the fourth industrial revolution a lot of industries had to change and adapt to computer integrated manufacturing, the ‘Internet of things’, cloud computing, machine to machine communication, additive manufacturing and ‘big data’. Overall, this industrial transformation is driven by digitalization. The Swedish dental laboratory industry is of special interest for our research due to the lack of adaption to the new technological changes, decreasing market share in Sweden and the threats from cheap Chinese production. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to understand the current situation the Swedish small and medium sized dental laboratories are facing because of the threats from the Chinese competition. Therefore, we analyze the Swedish dental laboratory industry and map the situation. Moreover, we show what the laboratories are currently doing to defend their market position in a highly competitive environment. Method: The data was gathered from semi structured and open interviews of dental technicians, dentists and industry experts. This empirical data was analyzed in an abductive thematic approach. Additionally, this theory driven approach combines the research question and the propositions with the empirical findings to create a precise research report. Conclusion: Up to recently, China was a big threat for the domestic dental laboratories but this threat is decreasing nowadays. Due to the demand of high quality products with precise services, dentists require a close collaboration with the dental laboratories. In order to survive as an SME in the Swedish dental industry, collaborating in networks among local competitors can help to lift investments for new equipment in the transforming environment. With state of the art technology and shared competences Swedish dental laboratories can sustain their competitive advantage in global competition.

LUO, Huajiang. "Information leakage and Stackelberg leadership in Cournot competition." Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2015. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/cds_etd/12.

Full text
Abstract:
In duopoly Cournot competition with sequential moves, it is well known that each player prefers Stackelberg leadership without demand uncertainty. We study the same game when the demand is uncertain, and firms possess some private information about the uncertain demand. There are two effects of private information in this game. First, when the Stackelberg leader moves first, its private information is leaked to, or inferred by the Stackelberg follower via the output quantity. Hence, the Stackelberg follower makes decision based on more accurate information than the leader. Second, the leader incurs a cost to signal its information to the follower, which hurts the leader. Both effects hurt the Stackelberg leader, then the follower may earn more ex ante profit than the leader. When the demand is continuous, Gal-or (1987) assumes that firms follow linear decision rules and reports that the follower always sets a higher output quantity than the leader and earns more profit than the leader. However, our study finds that it is true if and only if the demand is unboundedly distributed. Otherwise, the Stackelberg leader's Pareto-optimal output quantity is not linear in its private information unless it observes the highest signal, and the follower does not always earn more ex ante profit than the leader. When the demand is discretely distributed, we study how the number of demand states influences the effect of cost of signaling. With more demand states, the effect of cost of signaling on the leader becomes more significant, and the follower may earn more ex ante profit than the leader.

Full text
Abstract:
The field of study on coopetition has been given a growing emphasis in the recent years by researchers and business practice. Coopetition is a term integrating the notions of cooperation and competition happening as an intensive simultaneous process where actors seek to leverage the value created by other companies in their business network. These complex and paradoxical interactions are acknowledged as needing further research about the effects of coopetition and the different types of coopetitive interactions involved when firms coopete. The business network highlighted in the current study concerned the Swedish Cleantech industry. It offers an interesting ground as Sweden has been investing substantial amounts in environmental protection technologies. Moreover, SMEs in Sweden play an increasingly significant role in the national economy by their rapid technological development. Nonetheless, these SMEs battle to sustain opportunities and are facing many challenges such as lack of key resources, a limited market presence, and liabilities of newness. Thereby, collaboration is essential among Cleantech SMEs in order to overcome these challenges and sustain competitive advantages. This study sets out to fill this gap through the following objectives: by describing the cooperative and competitive activities happening of SMEs inside the Swedish Cleantech industry, by understanding how SMEs select their cooperative relationship with their competitors inside their business network, and by analyzing how coopetition can be implemented by SMEs as a strategy to develop sustainable competitive advantage. This research was conducted through a qualitative case study and semi-structured interviews of seven Swedish SMEs operating in the Cleantech industry. The findings underline that coopetition can be used as a matching strategy between the internal and the external environment of the firm. Further, before coopetition can lead to sustained competitive advantages, companies first need to develop societal advantages in the form of economic value, social value, and natural value.

Abstract:
The research problem addressed in this study was to determine what the main factors are that contribute to the competitive advantage of the catalytic converter industry cluster in the Eastern Cape. To achieve this objective theoretical models of competitive advantage and literature of industry clustering were identified. For the models on competitive advantage, Porter’s diamond was used for national competitive advantage and Porter’s model on the competitive environment, which affects the competitive advantage of a region. Other theories on competitive advantage of cities and regions were identified, leading up to the theory on the cluster approach. The literature mentioned was broken down and analysed using literature, from knowledgeable people in the automotive industry in the Eastern Cape, identified during the study. A questionnaire was developed to test the degree to which the catalytic converter industry cluster in the Eastern Cape is in agreement with the literature study. The empirical study obtained a strong concurrence with the literature study on national competitive advantage and the theory of clusters. This resulted in a strategy for the catalytic converter industry cluster to sustain competitive advantage and remain globally competitive.

Abstract:

A major challenge facing the South African wine industry has been the economic repositioning of the sector, which since 1994 has moved away from a highly regulated domestic environment. The increasing integration of the local industry into international markets and global value chains has been accompanied by the industry&rsquo
s deregulation and restructuring. From the production focus
on a limited range of low value-added varieties produced for domestic tastes and to meet monopoly quotas, producers have shifted to planting noble cultivars suited to various international
tastes. Despite the lack of growth in traditional Western European markets, new world producers like South Africa have successfully competed and secured new market share. The Western Cape
ine industry is ranked as the second-largest contributor to the Western Cape economy. The thesis explores the effect of cluster governance and the coordination of strategic collective
actions on the Western Cape wine cluster&rsquo
s competitiveness. The data has been gathered through a combination of documentary analysis and interviews conducted with the leadership and/or
management of various industry organisations. A qualitative approach has been adopted in the data analysis and interpretation of the findings, with information gathered via a combination of
documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews with key representatives of established industry bodies and key role-players in the Western Cape wine cluster.

The change process according to Pettigrew (1987) comprises the actions, reactions and interactions between various parts of the organization wishing to take it from a present state to a future state. In environments where laws are not enforced and there is the presence of informal/illegal businesses, these changes tend to have more negative influence for companies that operate legally. This study occurred in two companies in the city of Benjamin Constant -AM, on the border between Brazil, Peru and Colombia, analyzing strategic change according to the dimensions of process, context (internal and external) and Content aimed to identify how or if these companies were able to obtain competitive advantage in spite of competition from informal/illegal settlements. The case study used a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with owners and members of the management team. Through longitudinal analysis of the companies were able to identify the main events that have driven changes and realize the difficulties faced, strategies employed and contextual changes on the informal competition made possible by the lack of Brazilian supervision .

Abstract:

The object of this thesis is to analyse how a co-operational network can come about, operate and progress to contribute to industrial dynamics within the locality. The thesis is a case-study of the HomeCom Project, to learn whether this project has the required features to contribute to the clustering process and thus higher levels of industrial dynamics and competitive advantage of the home communications industry in Linköping. The theoretical platform is based on Porter’s Diamond-model, which explains the occurrence of clusters. Theories of external economies complement Porter’s theories, while oligopoly theory will be introduced to offer a different perspective. The empirical findings show that the HomeCom Project may be considered to contribute to the clustering and in consequence promote industrial dynamics and competitive advantage. But there are also difficulties and attitudes that may impede the reaching of the project’s goals.
