Full textThis work is about the relations between coping and emotions during female handball competitions. It relies on the articulation of the stress patterns through the transactional approach and the theory of reversal. To identify and understand the coping strategies in the specific field of sports, this study wishes to focus on and to bring to the fore, the effects of the contextual variables (appreciated stakes) and individual (dominance telic; hypnotic strategy) on the cognitivo-emotional process as well as on the emotions. All the results show that while competing, coping is linked to emotional responses; coping and/or emotion are under the effect of both individual and contextual variables. Coping which is centred on the problem seems to have positive consequences in terms of collective performance and it can be made easier through the high intensities of the appreciated stakes

Full textThe objective of this thesis was to analyze the influence of a sports season on the physical, physiological and psychological characteristics of handball players of the Montpellier Agglomération Handball club, one of the best European clubs. At first (Study 1), we were interested in the evolution of the isokinetic muscular profile of the lower limbs during the pre-competitive preparation phase (Pc2P). Although this period is short (8 weeks), our results show that most of the values of strength, power (at 30±.s¡1, 60±.s¡1 and 240±.s¡1, in concentric and eccentric), and different ratios (agonist vs antagonist, dominant vs non-dominant as wellas mixed ratio) increase significantly during Pc2P. In a second phase (Study 2), we were interested in the evolution of the isokinetic muscular profile of the lower limbs during the competition period. Our results show that a competitive season does not significantly affect the evolution of most of isokinetic parameters. Finally, during our 3rd work, we studied the evolution of many markers (biological, physiological and psychological) during a sports season. The main results of our work show (i) a decrease in the mean values of VFC concerning HF and RMSSD values, coupled with a slight increase in HR in T4, suggesting a decrease inparasympathetic activity in the supine position, (ii) an increase in the values in the T4 fitness questionnaire and (iii) a decrease in the values of [C]sg , [F]sg , IGF-1 and Hematocrit, respectively in T5 and T4. Testosterone results show a significant increase in T5. They showed no significant change in CPK and IGFBP-3 values. This work emphasizes the need to develop the strength and power qualities most effectively during Pc2P and to target the most e-relevant markers for longitudinal tracking of handball players

Full textThis stape thesis is divided into two interrelated parts. The first part is comprised of three chapters on current topics in sport psychology: qualitative methods, anxiety and imagery. The three sections of this first part serve as the basis of the five studies which form the second part of the thesis. The first chapter explores an alternative to quantitative research methods, or the contemporary vein of research known as "qualitative" research in North America. The definitions, theories and results of current research in anxiety are presented and discussed in the second chapter. Finally, the third chapter resumes and evaluates the theories, applications and functions of imagery in sport. The first study concerns the mental preparation of athletes having participated in the 1993 world judo championship. The approach is "qualitative" in terms of both the gathering and the analysis of data. The perspective could be qualified as "clinical," less the therapeutic connotation of the word. The second study involves the observations of variations in salivary cortisol of high-performance judoists throughout a day of competition. This research takes into account the psychophysiological aspect of competitive anxiety through the use of a new experimental protocol

Full textThree types of social interactions account for the evolution of athletic races. 1- The nature of the athletic effort could be defined as struggles between groups which underline their differences through comparison so as to gain the whole monopoly of the symbols. In order to preserve their motivations, individuals will create new forms of physical activities. Thus, they emphatically contest the orthodoxy of sport and therefore constrain the institution to integrate their messianic stand-point. 2- The thus created conflicts during a collective activity are regulated by individualizing the efforts, separating the operations concerning the treatment of both internal and external uncertain- ties, and lastly by the presence of the coach who acts as a go-between. 3- The technical and organizational productions form compromises between the various types of agents. They maintain and try to solve the duality of a contest against others and a contest against oneself. The symbolical images used to achieve a sort of harmony remain in accordance with a situational type of rhetoric which drives the athlete to keep the social constraints within himself. Reversing the means and ends well account for the shift from handicap to scratch races as they might account for increased preparatory tasks

Full textPrevious studies have highlighted that parents have an important role during the two first steps of the young athletes’ development to the high level (sampling years, specializing years). Their involvement (logistic, informational, emotional, directivity, pressure and autonomy) seems to permit to cope with constraints of resources, motivation and effort suggested by the sportive activity’s deliberate practice. Their support also influences young athletes’ psychological, motivational, affective and behavioral characteristics. But, works in the field of family involvement in sport have mainly been conducted in American, Canadian and English countries, suggesting a lack of measurement tools in France and cultural differences about results. Parents are probably not considered as much in France than in other countries and their involvement is perhaps not perceived as essential. Moreover, relations between performance determinants (motivation, pleasure, effort and commitment) have not been analyzed, and yet less compared according to adolescent’s sex, his level of practice and parents’ sex. So, eight studies soliciting adolescent tennis players and their parents have been put in place in order to answer to these several limits, including qualitative and quantitative approaches. Questionnaires of parental involvement have been constructed and validated. Main conclusions have first highlighted the importance of parents in the tennis player’s social environment. Then, parents have perceived themselves as much implicated in their child’s activity that the level of practice increases, elaborating a familial sportive project. Next, types and degrees of parental support have specific links between them (emotional / autonomy and directivity / pressure / informational). Finally, causal sequences exist. Overall, logistic support influences the perception of the motivational climate which has an effect on motivation, source of affective and behavioral outcomes. These causal sequences vary not only according to the level of determination (links’ strength and totality of mediations) but according to the adolescents’ developmental stage, parental sex and to relational dyads too

Full textSix-year-old children discover Primary School, as well as, for some of them, extracurricular physical activity. Then, it is the age of the multiplication of social evaluation situations, as during school evaluations and sport competitions, conducting children to compare to each other and to come up to their parents' and teachers' expectations. These situations, potentially stressful, are opportunities to evaluate their self-esteem, that is in construction. Therefore, the aim of this doctoral dissertation was to construct a theoretical model taking into account self-esteem within transactional stress process, in order to better understand the way young children experience these situations. A special interest was given to the transactionality of this model, as well as to the impact of time on the construction of this latter, beginning of Primary School appearing to be a transition period. Moreover, practising an extracurricular activity conducting to the multiplication of these situations, its role in the constitution of this process was studied. A longitudinal design was implemented with 63 children, from the beginning of first grade to the beginning of second grade. It has been necessary to adapt the methodology to the target population, using interviews based on thematic drawings, and self-evaluation pictorial scales. Results permitted to highlight the relevance of this model, as well as the importance of sport activity in the construction of the process, and offered many opportunities of reflection

Full textAccording to Georges Simmel, conflict is inherent in society. In establishing conflict situations between two or more people, it helps to achieve, according to Simmel, unity in society. There are different types of interpersonal conflict, including the duel and the discussion. When two opponents take part in a duel, they are seeking, first and foremost, personal success. To achieve this, the communication between the two individuals is often synonymous with expression, “each seeking primarily, not to communicate but to be able to speak.” Ultimately, it is not so much that they want to hear the other person speak as having the opportunity of speaking or acting themselves. In a discussion, as understood by Jürgen Habermas, the primary aim is to work towards a common victory. Through their interaction, the speakers share their ideas and arguments in order to achieve what they believe is best for them through a quest for truth, fairness and sincerity. Today we are more oriented towards an expression society rather than a discussion society, the latter model being, in the view of many scientists, too much of an ideal to have any practical application in everyday life. Sport is part and parcel of the culture of our society, and is deemed to be an ordinary social practice. However, if we focus on the relationships between opponents during their sporting clash, we can make two observations: not just that interpersonal conflicts are a reflection of today’s society, as in the case of football; but also that the world of sport provides an opportunity to develop another form of communication between adversaries: that of a “discussion society”, which finds its fullest expression in competitive tennis
