Abstract:
Dissertation (PhD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explored the potential of competitive games and cooperative games as means for teaching adolescent girls some of the concepts that support cooperation. Hellison's (1995) levels for teaching responsibility were used as guidelines for selecting specific teaching strategies. The intervention consisted of a theme-oriented intervention programme presented to two experimental groups. One group (n = 9) participated in a games programme that consisted of competitive activities and the other group (n = 9) participated in a games programme that consisted of cooperative activities. The experimental groups were presented with theme-oriented lessons based on four concepts that support cooperation: sportsmanship, communication, trust and responsibility. A control group (n = 18) was also identified and used for statistical comparisons. In order to set a context for this study, background information was gathered using a questionnaire to determine how girls from the school (N = 194) felt about competitive games and sports. Three measurement instruments were used to collect data. The assessment of how the girls at the school felt about competitive games and sport was completed, using Gill & Deeter's (1988) Sport Orientation Questionnaire (SOQ). Pre- and posttesting of the girls in the experimental groups also included the SOQ. Harter's (1985) Self-perception Profile was used to measure perceptions of perceived social acceptance. Soudan and Everett's (1981) 24-item questionnaire was used to determine any changes in how the girls in the experimental groups perceived the benefits of participation in physical activity. Results of the Sport Orientation Questionnaire for High School Girls (N = 194) indicate that the girls like competitive activities and enjoy competing, but for them, it is more important to set personal goals in competitive games than it is to win. Following the comparison between pre- and post-test data, it was concluded that the theme-oriented competitive games programme had an effect on how the girls feel about participation in games and sports. They became significantly less competitive in their orientation. No changes were noted in their perceived social acceptance. A significant increase in their perception that participation in sport and physical activity has social benefits as well as benefits in preparing them for a career/job were noted. The theme-oriented cooperative games programme also had a significant effect on how the girls feel about participation in games and sports. The competitive nature and win orientation of the girls participating in the cooperative games programme significantly decreased. No changes were noted in their social acceptance. There was a significant increase in their perception that participation in sport and physical activity has health and fitness benefits. Results on comparing the groups indicate that the perceived athletic competence of the competitive group increased significantly when compared to the cooperative group. No other changes were noted. A themeoriented approach to teaching children about cooperation in a competitive and/or cooperative environment seems to be an effective strategy.
Daar was 'n beduidende afname in hul kompeterende oriëntasie.

Abstract:
Our main hypothesis concerns the existence of multilateral specificities in the praxis of EU-Russian relations. We argue that there are several kinds of multilateral interaction which inform the relationship between the EU and the Russian Federation which occur at three different levels. We divide, thus, our hypothesis in three perspectives that materialise in three types of multilateralism informing EU-Russian interactions: “interactive multilateralism”, “selective multilateralism” and “systemic multilateralism”. They complement and compete with each other. The capacity of the relationship to deliver is a result of this balance. This typology of “multilateralism” that is produced by EU-Russian relations aims at contributing to overcome some of the above-mentioned limitations of existing thinking about the concept and its practices, and the diverging views about the significance of the relationship. The first three chapters analyse the way each of the types materialised and impacted on each other. The last chapter draws on the balanced assessment of EU-Russian relations as a result of its tri-dimensional specific multilateral shape and on the recurrent need to devise a satisfying and effective model of cooperation between the two players

Abstract:
The concept of serious games, or using games and gaming technologies for purposes other than purely entertainment, became popularized with the creation of the Serious Games Initiative in 2002 and has continued to grow. While this trend may appear new, the use of games for learning has a rich history and the idea of using a game as a learning platform is an established concept that had has withstood the test of time. Research in this area must move from if games can teach, to how do we improve games that do. Proponents of serious games suggest that they should improve motivation, time on task, motivation to learn, and a litany of other benefits based primarily on the thought that what works in an entertainment game will work in a learning game. Unfortunately, this might not always be the case. For example, a commonly held misconception in learning games is that competition will motivate learner to succeed, as it motivates players of an entertainment game to continue to play. This is, however, not well supported by the learning science literature. Cooperative goal structures commonly lead to increased motivation to learn as well as improved learning outcomes when compared to competition. This research seeks to provide a framework to view games for learning and more specifically explore the structure of challenge in the context of cooperative and competitive goal structures, as well as explore the use of the word game and how it could possibly modify the expectations of the learner.

Abstract:

A major challenge facing the South African wine industry has been the economic repositioning of the sector, which since 1994 has moved away from a highly regulated domestic environment. The increasing integration of the local industry into international markets and global value chains has been accompanied by the industry&rsquo
s deregulation and restructuring. From the production focus
on a limited range of low value-added varieties produced for domestic tastes and to meet monopoly quotas, producers have shifted to planting noble cultivars suited to various international
tastes. Despite the lack of growth in traditional Western European markets, new world producers like South Africa have successfully competed and secured new market share. The Western Cape
ine industry is ranked as the second-largest contributor to the Western Cape economy. The thesis explores the effect of cluster governance and the coordination of strategic collective
actions on the Western Cape wine cluster&rsquo
s competitiveness. The data has been gathered through a combination of documentary analysis and interviews conducted with the leadership and/or
management of various industry organisations. A qualitative approach has been adopted in the data analysis and interpretation of the findings, with information gathered via a combination of
documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews with key representatives of established industry bodies and key role-players in the Western Cape wine cluster.

Abstract:

Market globalization and steep competition are increasing the need for more efficient and effective strategies in meeting evolving market demands. Adopting a more integrated approach to supply chain relationship management has been increasingly viewed as a way of meeting changing customer needs. This thesis work explores lean and agility frameworks as tools for achieving supply chain integration. Different aspects of the concepts of lean and agility and their applications in the supply chain are presented based on theoretical literature. Thus, this thesis seeks to point out the impact that the concepts of lean and agility can have on the supply chain as a whole. Four companies have been investigated in connection to the level of awareness, perception, and practical application of these tools in their supply chain. To this end, information was collected in a survey questionnaire from these four companies and supported by an interview. The results show that lean and agility are important tools to achieve supply chain integration, but respondents are yet to fully achieve the transition to lean/agile enterprise. It could be said that lean/agile supply chain is still more in theory than in practice. The level of awareness to market changes is high but there seem to be no specific way in achieving integration in the supply as there is wide variation in the way one company achieves it with respect to another. Generally, respondents are implementing lean/agile principles in cooperation and collaboration with suppliers and customers, demand pull system, and using combination of strategies. However, it is clear that adequate market information is required when trying to fit lean/agile principles into supply chain strategy. Furthermore, all respondent recognise the need for change to satisfy customer need, but the respond to change vary from one company to another. Also, there is a gradual shift from traditional focus solely on cost and profit to customer relation relationship management and customer satisfaction. Consequently, companies are organizing themselves around the customer who pulls goods and value from the producer of the goods.

ABSTRACT Clusters have been an important alternative for companies to gather in a cooperative network. It is believed that the success of a cluster comes from commitment, partnership and participation of the companies, which is guaranteed by constant monitoring of actions, evaluation of goals and by strategic correction of choices. The objective of this study was to identify, through the perception of the managers of the companies involved in the cluster, to understand how cooperation contributes to improve performance and other competitive advantages perceived by the companies that constitute the Iguassu-IT cluster. The cooperation levels are related to planning, innovation, learning, development of strategic projects, innovation strengthening, and relationship among companies. Competitive advantage was evaluated based on reduction of production costs, technological evolution, innovation, bigger market participation, access to financing (governmental), exchange and gain of knowledge, strategic market positioning, and products and services with higher value. This research is characterized as a Study Case. The gathering of data was carried out through structured survey sent to the managers of the companies that constitute the Iguassu-IT cluster, through interview of the coordinator of the project with SEBRAE, documental analysis, and using direct observation. Data was collected during the months of November of 2016 and November of 2017. The questionnaire was sent to the 43 companies in the cluster, of which 32 were valid. It was found in this study case that cooperation among companies in the cluster resulted in competitive advantage, mainly regarding the relationship among companies, improving strategic market positioning, exchange and gain of knowledge, and products and services with higher value. The main motivation for companies to join the cluster were the pursue of quality and efficiency. The permanence of companies in the cluster is sustained by the availability of information on products and the organization of technical events. The cooperation among members of the cluster makes possible the exchange of experiences on planning, innovation, learning, and development of strategic projects, as well as has improved the relationship among the companies. The data confirms the argument of Cooperation Theory, that individuals cooperate consciously, deliberately, and intentionally for the achievement of a common goal. This research contributed in identifying the motivational objectives for the joining and continuity in the Iguassu-IT cluster, highlighting the factors cooperation and competitive advantage perceived by the managers.

Abstract:
The field of study on coopetition has been given a growing emphasis in the recent years by researchers and business practice. Coopetition is a term integrating the notions of cooperation and competition happening as an intensive simultaneous process where actors seek to leverage the value created by other companies in their business network. These complex and paradoxical interactions are acknowledged as needing further research about the effects of coopetition and the different types of coopetitive interactions involved when firms coopete. The business network highlighted in the current study concerned the Swedish Cleantech industry. It offers an interesting ground as Sweden has been investing substantial amounts in environmental protection technologies. Moreover, SMEs in Sweden play an increasingly significant role in the national economy by their rapid technological development. Nonetheless, these SMEs battle to sustain opportunities and are facing many challenges such as lack of key resources, a limited market presence, and liabilities of newness. Thereby, collaboration is essential among Cleantech SMEs in order to overcome these challenges and sustain competitive advantages. This study sets out to fill this gap through the following objectives: by describing the cooperative and competitive activities happening of SMEs inside the Swedish Cleantech industry, by understanding how SMEs select their cooperative relationship with their competitors inside their business network, and by analyzing how coopetition can be implemented by SMEs as a strategy to develop sustainable competitive advantage. This research was conducted through a qualitative case study and semi-structured interviews of seven Swedish SMEs operating in the Cleantech industry. The findings underline that coopetition can be used as a matching strategy between the internal and the external environment of the firm. Further, before coopetition can lead to sustained competitive advantages, companies first need to develop societal advantages in the form of economic value, social value, and natural value.

Abstract:
The research has been conducted in Bukit Barisan High Land zone consists of eight regencies located in the northern part of North Sumatra province, Indonesia. It is found that the zone is entrapped in a high poverty rate and a high unemployment level. The regions main employment sector is agriculture, where more than 50 percent of the total workforce engages in the sector. The main challenging of the regions is a very low productivity. This is due to lack of management practices and capacities in term of tools inputs, and knowledge now-how. Moreover, the lack of information and coordination between the actors of the economy i.e. farmers-local governments-enterprises-and universities in the regions has dragged away the value added products and inherited in high fluctuation of the commodities in term of prices and qualities. Accordingly a new cooperation needs to be made between all the actors of the economy in the regions. As information has a vital role in the development of the regions, this sector hence ought to be diffused in an appropriate way. This information center then called as a Competitive Intelligence (CI) Center, which is importantly formed in each region in Bukit Barisan High Land zone. The CI center will ensure the formation of the sound development programs to be applied in the regions in order to achieve a desirable growth within the regions and within the country as a whole. The program of CI center is emphasized on enhancing the potentials of each region and overcome its problems and challenging. In this thesis, Bukit Barisan High Land which consists of 8 regions is categorized as one zone regarding similarity in its topography, climate, type of soil, social condition of the society, its potentials and problems. The development of the region then suggested by the creation of the Small and Medium Enterprises close to the region to ensure the achievement of value chain between suppliers and producers in this case Farmers and enterprises. This value chain can only be achieved by a solid collaboration by all economic actors. Based on the findings, it is suggested that the most prospective commodities need to be intensified are coffee and corn. Corn is perceived as one of a prospective export regarding a continuous increase demand for the commodity globally, whereas coffee is a permanent export commodity where the decreasing supply by Vietnam has contributed to more opportunity to Indonesia. In order to provide some vision to investors, the feasibility studies of the plantation and production of two commodities will be presented at the last part of the thesis

The dynamic resource-based view has held that the dynamic capabilities contribute to the generation of competitive advantage of the firm. In addition, scholars stress the potential of inter-organizational relationships as a source for obtaining valuable resources. Despite these notions, few empirical studies have tested hypotheses related to them. In response to this gap and an innovative perspective, the main objective of this thesis was centered on empirically investigate the effects of interorganizational cooperation in the dynamic capabilities, of these in competitive advantage, and therefore, in firm’s performance. Data were collected from 271 hotel companies located in 65 tourism destinations in Brazil, tested and refined by structural equation modeling with estimation of the matrix by PLS method. During the work, a scale to measure what is called tourist destinations interorganizational cooperation was developed and validated, which is one of the contributions of this study. The results suggest that interorganizational cooperation provides positive effects on dynamic capabilities, confirms that the dynamic capabilities positively affect the competitive advantage and this, the performance of hotel companies.

Abstract:
The research objective of this dissertation is to investigate the impact of institutional arrangements, with respect to vertical integration and cooperation, on competitive advantages within the commercial printing industry, with specific focus on digital printing. This dissertation comprises six research papers, based on four qualitative case studies and a quantitative survey study, all carried out in Sweden in the years 2004-2008.The results show that vertical integration is a way to achieve competitive advantages in the commercial printing industry and is a widely used strategy in Sweden. Being able to contract full service companies is appreciated by customers to printing houses, especially direct customers, due to their need for a supplier of complete solutions for printed matters. Consequently, a vertically integrated company can provide value added services which makes it possible for customers to minimize their organization regarding production and purchasing of printed matters. Other reasons for vertical integration are the need to ensure fast deliveries to customers and having a steady supply of appropriate jobs. Despite the believed strategic importance by the industry, the results show that the level of vertical integration has no significant impact on profitability. Vertical integration is strategically important for digital printing houses in order to develop their business because digital printing allows for fast deliveries, on-demand printing and variable data printing. Despite the commoditization of printed matter, the findings indicate that the industry, in general, focuses on providing a high service level even though it means having to set higher prices. Furthermore, the results point toward that this strategic positioning is beneficial for digital printing houses because they experience a lower degree of competition and a lower price pressure.Vertical integration can, however create inflexibility due to ownership and employment. The findings suggest that cooperation can be used to achieve fast access to valuable resources, such as production equipment and knowledge, and, hence, increase printing houses’ resource flexibility. Even though internal control of resources is regarded as important to be able to satisfy customers’ needs and produce customers’ orders on time, cooperation with partners can create similar strategic effects. Furthermore, cooperation can give cost and flexibility advantages compared to vertical integration by reducing internal need for production capacity and allowing access to complementary resources. Nevertheless, it is common to combine vertical integration with cooperation to create competitive advantages and make a company more flexible and dynamic toward market changes.

Organizations are increasingly interacting among their peers and competitors. The new economy and the cooperation between organizations are important cause companies are facing difficulties to meet the competitive demands alone. This study is motivated by the perception that to contribute to the survival of small and medium entrepreneurs the current socio-economic contingencies can be addressed through the implementation of joint actions coordinated by inter-organizational networks. This paper presents a mapping of four existing Business Cooperation s Networks in the State of Goiás where we sought to identify their competitive gains. The results revealed that existing gains in those networks are: increased market power, generation of collective solutions, costs and risks reduction, capital accumulation, collective learning and collaborative innovation. In addition, the survey found that these networks require internal organizational improvements and are not yet using all available competitive advantages and interactions for a cooperation network. Suggestions for improvements were presented, such as enhance members communication, tailor proper standard layout for the network sales points, facilitate and encourage more members to be active in meetings exercising their vote, promote events to increase the social capital gain and use purchase power over major suppliers for cost reduction. Organizations should use a common Information Technology (IT) system to exchange information creating though a governance model with all participating.

Abstract:
The present circumstances, of intense competition, has compelled companies to seek alternatives to enhance their competitiveness. In this context, the information gains an strategic prominent role within the organizations seeking to provide competitive advantage through competitive intelligence. So, there is a growing need for relevant, accurate, timely and reliable information about the competitive environment. The information, seen as a relation with the social environment, requires the existence of shared codes that are recognized by those involved. Its value within organizations has resulted in the emergence of agglomerations of companies engaged in similar activities. Such change has made that the investigations on Clusters gained prominence in organizations and in academy, raising researches like this one, which seek to understand the synergies generated by interactions between companies within common environments. Taking into consideration the above context, this study presented as its purpose to identify and to analyze the perception of the entrepreneurs of Cluster furniture of Uberlândia City, in relation to the interest and availability in the sharing of strategic information and of intelligence, about the organizational macro and microenvironment. The specific objectives, also presented in the study, consider the following neeeds: to show the perception of importance for the Cluster companies on the components of the organizational macro and microenvironment; to verify the perception of Cluster´s entrepreneurs on the sharing of strategic information, cooperation and competitive intelligence; to point out and to investigate the perception of the Cluster´s entrepreneurs on the hierarchy of the components of the organizational macro and microenvironment in the potentiation of competitiveness of their business; and to identify and to analyze the interrelations among the components of the organizational macro and microenvironment that characterize the entrepreneurs perceptions on the importance of the access to information and, also, in relation to the interest of these in sharing strategic information and intelligence. The study is characterized as a quantitative and qualitative research, and we have adopted, as research strategies, the bibliographic research, the documentary research and the survey. The data sources used are: the bibliography related to the topic on study, the documents related to the creation of the Furniture producing area and the owners of the furniture companies in Uberlândia. As techniques for collecting of applied data, we have: bibliographical survey, documentary research, a questionnaire and interviews. In relation to the techniques of data analysis, we have adopted the literature review, the use of documental analysis, descriptive statistics, statistical inference and analysis factorial. The components of the organizational macro and microenvironment used in this study were based on the division proposed by Moresi (2001a) and adapted for Lopes, De Muÿlder and Judice (2011), which contemplates 14 components: clients; competition at the Cluster level; competition at the level of the organization; suppliers; funding and promotion lines; new entrants; regulatory agencies; substitute products; economic environment; legal environment, environmental legislation; political environment; social, demographic and cultural aspects; environment; and technological trends. Through the factorial analysis, it was verified the extraction of four factors related to the importance of access to information and five factors for the interest of sharing information. In a general way, it can be inferred that there is the interest and the availability of entrepreneurs of the furniture Cluster of Uberlândia in sharing strategic information and of intelligence, on the organizational macro and micro environment. However, currently, the exchange of information is still incipient. This shows the necessity of being created mechanisms that facilitates the interaction between companies.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to study if organizational culture affects the negotiation strategy in negotiation processes between municipalities in Sweden. Our cases are four municipalities involved in the municipal cooperation “Tillväxt Bohuslän”; a project which aims to foster cooperation. The question this thesis seeks to answer is: “Does the cultural attribute of organizational culture (ability for joint action) of the municipalities in ‘Tillväxt Bohuslän’ affect negotiation strategy in a negotiation process?” The municipalities’ ability for joint action has been classified as either strong or weak by a previous study. This thesis uses these already established classifications with the intention to test if they affect which negotiation strategy municipalities use. The negotiation strategy can either be of a competitive or a collaborative nature. The method to collect data about the municipalities’ negotiation strategies is semi-structured interviews with politicians who are actively involved in the negotiation in the municipal cooperation “Tillväxt Bohuslän”. Results from the analysis in this thesis show a zero result; the municipalities’ ability for joint action does not affect which negotiation strategy they use. However, interesting empirical findings are explored.

Globalization has caused significant organizational changes in recent decades. Increased competition and the uncertainty of economic markets caused the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) opted for cooperation, joining forces and making possible improvements to reduce risks, threats and better seize opportunities, to become more competitive through Network Business Cooperation (NBCs) and Local Production Arrangements (APLs). In this scenario, the present study has the objective to verify the competitive gains that occur in NBC also occur in clusters. This study aims to broaden the understanding of earnings and benefits provided by them. This research is characterized by being a multiple case study, descriptive, involving literature and documentary, conducted through semi-structured interviews with qualitative approach, developed from the content analysis technique, in which they were. Analyzed four NBCs and two clusters in the State of Goiás as a result, between competitive gains identified in the studied organizations, stand out: bargaining power, market power, training, shared marketing, shared activities, socialization of information and experience, and new products and services. Note that bargaining power, market power and shared activities were identified in all NBCs and in all the studied clusters. The relevant differences between NBCs and clusters were identified legitimacy and productivity in all clusters, not on NBCs and exploration opportunities, complementarity and transactional ease identified in all NBCs and not in clusters. The result of this research shows that competitive gains provided by the studied NBCs were also not identified in clusters.

Abstract:
The dairy activity in Brazil has developed and changed throughout its supply chain with quality requirements, consolidation of dairy production and installation of the dairy industry where there is high concentration of milk producers. Given the competitiveness of the sector and since the West of Santa Catarina has over 50 000 dairy farmers and various associations and networks to assist the family farm, this research analyzed the relationships of cooperation and competition among producers of milk and other agents in the region coverage by Rede Ascooper (Associação das Cooperativas e Associações de Produtores Rurais do Oeste de Santa Catarina). We used qualitative research methodology and applied the technique of interviews with farmers in order to characterize the properties, production and design of Value Nets, formed by customers, competitors, suppliers and complementors. The dairy producer cooperates and competes with these agents to generate value to your product and ensure mutual and individual benefits in a production and business game. The relationship of simultaneous cooperation and competition between actors is called coopetition (NALEBUFF; BRANDENBURGER, 1996). With the aid of the Sphinx software, we analyzed the content of the interviews, relations and activities performed individually and in network by dairy producers and their concrete and perceived results in terms of cooperation, competition and coopetition. They complement each other in pricing and “dairy lines”, community groups, but most do not realize the cooperative actions of collaborative efforts and exchange of equipment as before. The cooperation takes place especially in the cooperative, motivated by "being in a group", by offering support and guarantees, which reinforces the role of such organizations as key players in Value Nets, acting as customers, complementors, suppliers and competitors. The dairy industries, with their production requirements, do not cooperate with the producers during the production of milk, being in their Value Net just as customers and competitors. Competition among producers is mainly due to price, quantity and quality of milk. The coopetition has been a way of maintaining balanced activity, reducing the risk of exclusion from the producers. Cooperation and competition between producers can occur concurrently. Actors such as associations and cooperatives strengthen these relationships and extend the power of producers, becoming them a reference in production, productivity and formation of one of the major dairy regions of the country.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to discover patterns in intra-team co operation (passing) versus individualistic behavior (dribbling) across various age and gender groups . A behavioral coding scheme for soccer players in possession of the ball was designed to tabulate team responses of passing or dribbling behavior in a four-a-side indoor tournament . A total of 32 teams , 18 male teams and 14 female teams , participated in four age brackets. A multi variate analysis of variance (MANOVA) generated one significant result for age and passing behavior. This supported the first hypothesis that intra-team cooperative behavior increased with age. Due to the nonorthogonal nature of the data two separate analyses of variance (ANOVA) were conducted, one for each of_ the dependent variables. No significant results were generated by these ANOVA's for sex and dribbling behavior. However, there was tenuous confirmation of the second hypothesis, that there is a gender difference in the use of cooperative (passing) responses and individualistic (dribbling) behavior.

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Many territorial carnivores deposit faeces and other scent-marks at specific latrine sites, and their role in territorial defence is often assumed. However, recent empirical and theoretical work suggests that ultimate explanations of territoriality differ between the sexes. In this thesis, I investigate patterns of latrine-use in cooperatively breeding meerkats, Suricata suricatta. Meerkats exhibit high reproductive skew, and in such societies an individual’s optimal investment in territory defence and intruder deterrence will depend not only on its sex, but also its breeding status within the group. The spatial and temporal distribution of meerkat latrines reflects the diversity in intruder type. Shared latrine sites between neighbouring groups facilitate costeffective monitoring of predictable intruders and surrounding land tenure. In contrast, intruding transient groups and prospecting males are effectively intercepted by latrines concentrated in the core of the territories, close to refuges. This represents the optimal strategy, as meerkat territories are too large to allow effective scent-marking around their entire peripheries, and these intruders travel between refuges during intrusions. Temporal patterns of latrine-use suggest their importance in mate-defence. Latrine-use was correlated with encounters with prospecting males and oestrous periods of resident females, and reached a peak coinciding with the season of elevated dispersal and take-over events. Additionally, rather than cooperatively contributing to territorial defence, individuals participated selfishly at latrines. Males preferentially over-marked female scent-marks and scent-marked at significantly greater rates than females, which resulted in male-biased latrines that were unrepresentative of group composition. Although all individuals investigated female scent-marks for significantly longer than male scent-marks, females invested most, suggesting that intra-group monitoring is an important aspect of latrine visits for females. The deleterious effects of close inbreeding are well known, but regular dispersal in both sexes, and long dominance tenure, result in unfamiliar siblings having a high probability of encountering one another post-dispersal. As latrines are implicated in mate-defence, olfactory assessment of factors affecting mating decisions might be expected, but although individuals do recognise foreign faeces, discrimination does not appear to occur on the basis of kinship. Together, these findings have broad implications for our understanding of individual variation and sex differences in scent-marking behaviour and territoriality.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies the market effects of competition and cooperation between otherwise noncooperative firms. The first two chapters present theoretical treatments of joint ventures and mergers, respectively, while the third chapter applies sophisticated econometric techniques to market data generated in controlled experiments. A common thread ties the theoretical chapters: cooperation can be socially beneficial under some fairly general conditions. These conditions are derived and elucidated in each chapter. Despite potential social gains from combinations of otherwise competitive firms, consumers may nevertheless experience increasing prices. The goal of antitrust regulation is to ensure the competitive operation of markets, for the sake of consumers as well as non-combining competitors. The ensuing tension between social efficiency and higher post-combination prices is studied in detail in both of the first two chapters. In the case of a production joint venture, it is shown that relationships which are closer than "arm's length" can be socially optimal, although antitrust regulation clearly discourages such relationships. In the case of mergers, it is shown that combinations of large firms can not only increase aggregate welfare, but may increase consumer welfare under entirely plausible conditions. These results support a broad, rule-of-reason approach to interrival cooperation. The third chapter studies the tendency of non-cooperating, financially motivated subjects in controlled experiments to play as though they observe a particular adjustment process. There have been many experimental and field studies of the Cournot model, but the process of adjustment to equilibrium predictions has not been a major focus. Studying the observed play of experimental subjects in the Cournot environment is important because it can allow for greater understanding of where the model's assumptions fail in the field. Understanding adjustment can require some relatively advanced econometric tools, which are discussed and employed in the third chapter. It is shown that subjects do not individually conform to theoretical adjustment predictions, but behavior at the market level does approach predictions fairly often.

Abstract:
My dissertation challenges the dominant situational theory developed by Deutsch (1949) that conceptualizes cooperation and competition as situational factors equally shape all team members’ behaviors. Based on interdependence theory and social network techniques, I offer a configural theory that accounts for the complex, nonlinear patterns of within team cooperation and competition. Acknowledging the tension between team setting and conventional competition, I argue that within team competition is a restrained form of competition as its participants are bonded together by the team membership. Instead of competing for limited prizes or ranks that place individuals against each other, in typical team settings, team members compete for within team status. It has three dimensions, including demonstrating superiority over each team member on competence, participation and connection. I also argue that within team cooperation has three dimensions – sharing, helping and voicing that are directed towards each team member. I developed and validated social network-based measures of within team cooperation and competition based on a student sample in Study 1. The theoretical factor structure was supported. I then tested the overall research model in a field sample in Study 2. Utilizing quadratic assignment procedures, I found that characteristics of each dyad, including dependence, similarity and liking, are able to influence the cooperative behaviors within the dyad. However, why within team competition is differentiated was less consistent with what I expected. The overall pattern of within team cooperation and competition, captured by three network indices, density (i.e., overall connectedness), centralization (i.e., tie distribution), and subgrouping (i.e., disconnection), did not predict team performance. Future research directions are discussed.

Abstract:
Non-communicable diseases [NCDs] are increasing in both developing and developed countries. Western medicine is not able to offer satisfying solutions and treatments for people suffering from NCDs. TM/CAM have shown promise of effectiveness in the prevention and treatment of NCDs and many people now turn to TM/CAM. Hence it is of great interest to investigate the possibilities of increased integration of TM/CAM in national health care systems. This study was carried out in Sri Lanka, with the aim to investigate the main forces promoting and obstructing cooperation and communication between practitioners of Ayurvedic, Western and traditional medicine, in order to see how this affects integration of the medical subsystems. The focus of this qualitative study was the “Outcome oriented, evidence informed Ayurvedic Community Health Promotion Program”; a collaboration project aiming to integrate Ayurveda and Western medicine in primary health care. Semi-structured interviews, participatory observation and document analysis were carried out during three months in Sri Lanka and the results were analysed using Paul Unschuld’s theory on structured competition, cooperation or integration. The results indicate that the overall coexistence of Ayurveda and Western medicine in Sri Lanka is structured competition, while the collaboration project is aiming for structured cooperation. The results further show that the Sri Lankan parallel political approach to integration can be argued to obstruct integration, while the regulation of Ayurvedic practitioners increases cooperation through professionalization. Education is a main influencing factor for cooperation; lack of CAM-knowledge in medical students obstructs cooperation while westernization of Ayurvedic doctors both promotes and obstructs cooperation and integration. Capacity building, research based on Ayurvedic fundamentals and keypersons with knowledge of both sectors are of importance for increased cooperation and integration to come about.

Abstract:
The category game models the communication protocols between two agents who aim to match category labels with elements encountered in a simulated ()r real world. In the language games community the expressions available to an agent has traditionally centered on category label assertions. This thesis presents a new representation for category labels, in which category definitions explicitly Incorporate semantic uncertainty and typicality. More specifically, a conceptual model based on prototype and random set theory is proposed, in which categories are defined within a metric conceptual space. It is argued that this conceptual framework is both expressive and naturally generates robust assertion and concept updating models. This is demonstrated by the development of assertion and updating rules which allow compound logical expressions of category labels to be used in agent interaction. In particular, in multi-agent simulations of the category game under this framework, agents use a mixture of category labels and negated labels. The results of these simulations are presented, where a multi-agent system evolves through pairwise language games, implementing several different assertion and updating algorithms. The performance is measured in terms of the average distance between agents' conceptual interpretations, and results suggest that, within this framework, a mixture of both positive and negative assertions are required in order for the multi-agent systems to evolve so that agents share sufficiently similar interpretations covering the space, which are also able to discriminate between different cases. These results are supported in subsequent chapters where two further language games are implemented, suggesting that using a mixture of assertions shows the best possible communication success between agents. An investigation into the role of feedback in the category game compares simulations in which agents use feedback with the results of simulations without feedback. All results presented suggest that using feedback allows agents to develop a set of interpretations which are more similar than if feedback was not being implemented, and also allows agents to obtain a higher value for average communication success. Finally, we introduce a bipolar mode~ of assertion. This allows agents to make an assertion with two degrees of celtainty, and may be used as a strategy to gain higher reward and lower punishment in a category game implementing a feedback model.

The developing countries of Southeast Asia are rapidly increasing their investments in space technologies and formalized national space agencies. The inherent dual-uses and broad applications of space technologies as tools of security and development and the geopolitical importance of Southeast Asia make this examination of small-state space programs useful in exploring a number of themes. This thesis seeks to determine the conditions under which ASEAN member states choose to pursue space programs as vehicles for cooperation and competition with each other and developed international space powers within the context of international relations theory. It analyzes Southeast Asian national space developments to date, the relationship between domestic and foreign policies in influencing national space policies and extra-regional cooperation, the extent of regional space cooperation within ASEAN, and the role of bureaucratic and epistemic space communities in fostering an ASEAN community. The thesis concludes that cooperative and competitive forces complement each other as they operate at various levels within a multi-scalar international network. Patterns of space cooperation and competition among Southeast Asian space programs balance these two activities, as well as regional centrifugal and centripetal forces, in a relatively peaceful, positive sum game for national and regional space development.

Subsidized housing construction is one of the main policy instruments used in Spain to facilitate the access to affordable housing. Public companies, private developers and cooperative associations coexist as providers of these subsidized units. Due to the financial crisis, some of the public companies have decided to stop their role as developers and to focus on the management of their rental stock. This study describes the Spanish subsidized housing system and analyzes the interaction among the three types of developers to understand whether public companies should continue with their construction activity or become a different kind of player. Focusing on the Region of Madrid, we worked with data on the subsidized housing projects built from 2005 to 2014 and tested for the existence of a crowd-out effect at the district level. We analyzed the effect for the 10-year period, and afterwards we analyzed it separately for the housing market boom (2005-08) and bust (2009-14) periods. Our results suggest that a crowd-out effect exists between public and private developers in the three periods of analysis. However, cooperatives show a tactical alternation with public companies when analyzed at the boom and bust periods, but a strategic complementarity when analyzed as a single 10-year period. In the short term, a crowd-out effect exists between cooperatives and public companies, but in the long term there is a crowd-in effect. Although an analysis of the type and quality of the housing provided by each developer would be needed to complement this study, results suggest that the decision of public companies to change their role from active developers to service providers could benefit the whole subsidized housing sector. If the right incentives persist, private companies and cooperatives will continue to construct new subsidized housing units, whereas public companies can follow a complementary housing policy, focused on promoting rental units and refurbishment of existing buildings in city centers.

Abstract:
Roughgarden et al. (2006) proposed a theory called social selection as a behavioral game theoretic model for sexual reproduction that incorporates both competition and cooperation in 2006. Players oscillate between playing competitively to maximize their individual fitness, leading to a Nash Competitive Equilibrium, and playing cooperatively to maximize a team fitness function, leading to a Nash Bargaining Solution. Roughgarden et al. (2006) gives rates of change for both the competitive state and the cooperative state, but does not explain her rates or how to switch between the states in sufficient detail. We test and rederive the rates, critiquing an assumption that the derivation of such a rate must make, as well as create a probabilistic model that switches between the two states. We test our model on the reproductive behaviors of Symphodus tinca, the peacock wrasse. The results follow the trajectory of the reproductive strategies for the wrasse throughout the breeding system, suggesting that cooperation could be a mechanism through which wrasse change their reproductive behaviors. However, the inputs to the model need to be analyzed more critically. Future work could include deriving rates for competitive play and cooperative play that do not rely on assumptions of being able to quantify strategy allocation proportion and refining the model and drawing generalized conclusions about it.

Abstract:
This study examines emotional interaction within virtual competitive group activity. The participants are 5 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) players who belong to the same team. The study is an observational study in a naturalistic setting that utilizes an inductive- deductive approach. The study uses a methodology developed specifically for video-based research as well as Ethnomethodological conversation analysis (EMCA). The data consists of video and audio recorded on the participants’ computers during a match. The results illustrate how players utilize emotional interactions in different ways during a virtual competitive group activity. The interpretations of the data were based on two theories: The Emotions as temporal interpersonal system (TIES) model and the Emotions as social information (EASI) model. Using the TIES model, instances of co-regulation and co-dysregulation in the participants’ interactions during the match are explored. Using the EASI model, the participants’ use of emotions as information was examined. Our interpretations indicate that players use emotions in their interactions during a virtual competitive group activity and partake in interactions where the emotional content escalates and de-escalates. We suggest that these findings should be taken into consideration when developing training programmes for esports athletes and that further research on emotional interactions within competitive virtual context is possible.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this dissertation we deal with the design of strategies for agents interacting in a dynamic environment. The mathematical tool of Game Theory (GT) on Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) is adopted. The agents’ strategies control both the transition probabilities among the states and the rewards earned by each agent. Rewards are geometrically discounted over time. We first study the competitive case, in which two agents act selfishly. The game is zero-sum and the agents control disjoint sets of states. We devise two algorithms to compute the Nash equilibrium for all discount factors close enough to 1. Then we consider the long-run cooperative case, in which agents can coordinate their strategies. We utilize our two algorithms to compute the value of the coalitions in a routing game, in which several providers share the shame the same network and control the routing in disjoint sets of nodes. Next we deal the dynamic cooperative GT on MDPs, in which coalitions can from throughout the game. We show how to enforce a common agreement for which the pay-off is distributed at each state, in a global optimum way and such that no coalition is ever enticed to beak the agreement. We apply these concepts to a wireless multiple access channel, in which the channel is quasi-static. We assign the rate to users in each channel state in a fair and satisfactory manner. Next we provide three methods to compute a confidence interval for Shapley value on Markovian games. Such methods have polynomial complexity in the number of agents, while the complexity of the exact computation is exponential. Two methods are still valid when the values in each state are learned during the game. Finally we assess the performance of two strategies to dynamically select the frequency band to communicate on. We exploit an MDP formulation which uncountable state space

The production of new approaches using the technological resources in the teaching-learning process has grown in the educational environment. Therefore, the use of educational applications focused on robotics, is facilitating learning in education. However, engineering students, specifically in the discipline of programming languages are difficult to learn the standardized method to communicate instructions to a computer station. This dissertation addresses the frames of dedicated resources and methods of cooperative-competitive learning in order to facilitate the process of learning programming languages. It also seeks to define a software architecture to manipulate a robot in the real learning environment. The purpose is to promote a tool to assist in interpreting programming language instructions by a robot. The architecture definition process and set of methods to manipulate the robot was held to assist the difficulties encountered in students the discipline of programming languages. From these findings, it was possible to develop a system model, specific to the C programming language The prototype built in this paper is different from commercial products, because it took into account the adaptation of cooperative and competitive learning method. We attempted to offer an option that facilitates the editing of source code and its interpretation as to its use in the teaching-learning process. The evaluation process of the prototype was carried out by the methods of Usability Engineering. Based on results of experiments show that the environment has contributed to the process of teaching-learning programming languages. Therefore, the usability of the measurement criteria established by the ISO 9241 standard, claim that the proposal is another tool I support technological resources that can be used in education.

Over the past 52 years, the world has progressed from the first man in space, to landing on the moon, to permanent human presence on manned space stations. Mankind is now poised to explore even farther. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze whether international cooperation or competition is more in the U.S. interest from the perspective of political, technological, and cost-effectiveness criteria for returning humans to the moon, Mars or an asteroid and establishing a permanent presence. The 1960s space race between the U.S. and USSR and current cooperation on the International Space Station will provide a historical basis for comparison. Countries with major space programs will be reviewed for possible partnerships in future space endeavors. This thesis concludes that the future and next steps for human spaceflight with international partners will need to begin as a coordinated and interdependent effort at the onset with the goal of habitation on the moon.
