Abstract:
Drawing insights from strategic management and international business literature, the present study develops an integrated model to explain the competitive actions between multinational firms in a global context. Accordingly, two research questions are addressed: What key factors explain the competitive actions of multinational firms? What key factors moderate the competitive tensions experienced by different pairs of multinational firms? Using structured content analysis to identify competitive actions, the empirical findings of the present study suggest that subsidiary control, MNE size, nat

This dissertation includes the research I conducted in the fields of competitive dynamics, imitation and experimental economics. It is composed of three essays. The first essay deals with the performance implications of imitation of competitors’ innovation. On the baseline hypothesis that speed of new technology imitation is positively associated with performance we have explained how contingency factors at the technology pioneer- and environmental-level might vary this rela

Aircraft design has recently experienced a trend away from performance centric design towards a more balanced approach with increased emphasis on engineering an economically successful system. This approach focuses on bringing forward a comprehensive economic and life-cycle cost analysis, which can be addressed by the introduction of a dynamic method allowing the analysis of the future attractiveness of such a concept in the presence of uncertainty. One way of addressing this is through the use of a competitive market model. However, existing market models do not focus on the dynamics of the m

Given that evolutionary biologists have considered coevolutionary interactions since the dawn of Darwinism, it is perhaps surprising that coevolution was largely overlooked during the formative years of evolutionary computing. It was not until the early 1990s that Hillis' seminal work thrust coevolution into the spotlight. Upon attempting to evolve fixed-length sorting networks, a problem with a long and competitive history, Hillis found that his standard evolutionary algorithm was producing sub-standard networks. Abstract:
The prediction of the behaviour and spread of bushfires has always been fraught with a large number of unknowns, not the least of which has been the seemingly capricious nature of fire itself. Operational bushfire prediction systems, developed as they are using empirical methods, aim to predict the long-term mean spread of a bushfire based on its steady-state behaviour....

It has long been conventional to treat the firm as a basic unit of analysis when considering the performance of firms and markets. Along with the evolution of knowledge-based economy, patents have become a source of competitive advantage. In addition, the impact of competitive dynamics (attack and reaction) is ignored as an important element in performance differentials studies. Thus this study shifts the focus of attention fr
