Abstract:
Competitive advantage is influenced by dual mechanical system: endogenous system and exogenous competitive system. Compared with uncontrollable exogenous competitive elements, endogenous competitive elements exerting structural competitive advantage is of vital importance for companies to battle against disadvantages and achieve competitive advantaged independently. Endogenous competitive elements comprise: firm culture, dynamic capabilities, and complementary assets. At the strategic level, firm culture influences firm decisions; at the organizational level, dynamic capabilities create core competence of a corporation; at the practice level, complementary assets erect barriers to competitors. This study empirically analyzed Firm Sayyas, a leading firm in wooden windows industry having encountered countless structural changes of competitive elements, to uncover how SMEs can achieve competitive advantage. The empirical analysis shows that, cultivating endogenous competitive elements based on “firm culture, dynamic capabilities, and complementary assets” in the dynamic competition is an effective way to maintain SMEs’ competitive advantages.

For many years, architects in the United Kingdom have looked enviously at the competition system in the German speaking countries and Scandinavia. Now, with the introduction of a major public buildings programme partially funded by the new National Lottery, competitions are becoming more common in Britain. This paper opens with some reflections on the advantages and disadvantages of competitions. It then describes the conduct and outcome of a single Lottery-funded competition for the design of a building for which there were no precedents and in which issues of content and image were major preoccupations for both designers and assessors.

Abstract:
Objective. The objective of the article is to review the methods for assessing the competitiveness of a restaurant enterprise, analyze the methods for assessing the competitiveness of a restaurant enterprise, determine the advantages and disadvantages of the methods for assessing the competitiveness of a restaurant enterprise. Methods. Тo determine the advantages and disadvantages of the methods for assessing the competitiveness of a restaurant enterprise, the following scientific methods are applied: analysis and synthesis (for analyzing and evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of the methods for assessing the competitiveness of a restaurant enterprise), the abstract-logical method (for forming conclusions). Results. The article considers various methods for assessing the competitiveness of a restaurant enterprise, analyzes and determines the advantages and disadvantages of each method for assessing the competitiveness of a restaurant enterprise. It has been established that for the restaurant sector, the most effective are a comparative analysis of competitors, a consumer satisfaction assessment, and the Boston Consulting Group matrix, as they allow for a comprehensive assessment of the company's activities and an understanding of what changes need to be made to improve competitiveness in the market. SWOT analysis is effective for identifying a restaurant's strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the market. However, this method does not take into account rapid changes in the market and can be biased, as it depends on the analyst's interpretation. Competitor analysis is a method that allows to evaluate competitors' strategies, their menus, marketing strategies and target audience. However, it also has disadvantages, such as the possible use of incomplete or outdated data and an emphasis on the external environment without sufficient analysis of your own enterprise. Customer satisfaction assessment through a survey allows to determine the level of satisfaction with the service and the quality of dishes. However, consumer feedback is often subjective and can be limited due to people's reluctance to participate in surveys. Comparative analysis allows to evaluate indicators such as the average check, the number and quality of reviews in social networks, the number of visitors. However, this method also has its limitations, since restaurant enterprises can differ greatly in concept and target audience, which makes comparison difficult. Graphical and matrix methods are easy to use, but can simplify the situation by not taking into account all important factors, in particular the dynamics of changes in the market. The Boston Consulting Group method is useful for assessing market competition or restaurant competitors because it allows you to effectively analyze different business units or products (e.g., different dishes or restaurant concepts) using two important criteria: market share and market growth rate. This allows you to develop strategies to improve the restaurant's competitiveness.

ENTITIES INVOLVED IN THE ORGANISATION OF COMPETITIONS FOR MANAGERIAL POSTS: LEGAL ISSUES Summary The article discusses the legal issues associated with the competition method of selecting management staff. Under the current legal provisions in Poland many legal acts pertain to this issue, giving an inhomogeneous set of regulations for the principles of conducting such procedures in particular domains of public, social and economic affairs. The subject of the first part of this paper is the analysis of the concept of competitions for managerial posts and the classification of the procedure for the competitive selection of management staff based on various criteria. The author also points out the main advantages and disadvantages of competitions held for managerial posts. The second part of the paper describes the entities directly involved in the organisation of competitions for management staff, and indispensable for the running of such competitions. In my opinion the analysis of the legal acts which regulate this issue allows for the distinction of two essential categories of entities directly involved in the process of competitive management appointments. On the one hand this means those organisers who are responsible for initiating the whole procedure and who make the final decision on the appointment. On the other hand there is the competition commission, which has a significant influence on the effectiveness of the competitive selection of management staff.

Abstract:
In today's market economy, competition is an important concept. Today, issues of competition and competitiveness are especially relevant due to the processes of globalization and intensification of competition between producers of goods and services. As a result, the question arises as to what makes one producer better than another and whether he is able to fully meet the needs of his consumer, thus ensuring his profit? Therefore, assessing the competitive advantages, production, personnel, technological and marketing capabilities of the enterprise, as well as identifying ways to improve them affect the competitiveness of the enterprise in both domestic and foreign markets, as well as the possibility of expanding into new markets. Assessing the competitiveness of the enterprise allows to determine its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with competitors, identify ways to improve it, strengthen the company's position in the national market and identify new target markets. The article provides a review of scientific literature, research and publications on the subject of research, describes the methods, their advantages and disadvantages for assessing the competitiveness of the enterprise in terms of entering new international markets. The stages, the sequence of which must be followed when assessing the competitiveness of enterprises, are summarized. The main indicators, factors, as well as some characteristics of the product that affect the competitiveness of enterprises are presented. It is established that for effective assessment of the competitiveness of the enterprise in terms of entering new international markets, it is advisable to use a set of several valuation methods using a certain sequence. The evaluation results influence the choice of strategy and forms of the company's entry into new international markets, market choice, sales policy, and also allows to effectively assess the company's performance and ability to respond quickly and effectively to external changes, make the right management decisions and take measures to improve competitiveness of the enterprise.

The main theme of this master's thesis is an effort to explain the integration of transnational corporations from developing countries into the economic globalization. Firstly, we define the main concepts, such as process of globalization and competition. Then, we specify the most important characteristics of transnational corporations from developing countries, we identify major incentives and strategies of their integration into the global competition, we also devote our attention to measurement of degree of their integration into the global economy and evaluate their main competitive advantages and disadvantages. In the analytical part of the work we use quantitative analysis in order to find the differences between transnational corporations from developing countries and their counterparts from developed countries in the transnationality index, diversification of industry and industrial sector in which these companies operate. The last part is focused on a case study of an Indian transnational conglomerate Tata Group. On this example we show the practical aspects of integration of transnational corporations from developing countries into the global economy.

Full text
Abstract:
This monograph offers a critical overview of the current debate on The Semantics of Knowledge Attributions. It falls into five main parts. In Part I, the book introduces the reader to the literature on ‘knowledge’-attributions by outlining the historical roots of the debate and providing an in-depth discussion of epistemic contextualism. After examining the advantages and disadvantages of the view, Part II offers a detailed investigation of epistemic impurism (or pragmatic encroachment views), while Part III is devoted to a careful examination of epistemic relativism. Part IV then discusses two different types of strict invariantism (psychological and pragmatic), while the final part of the book, Part V, is devoted to Presuppositional Epistemic Contextualism—a version of contextualism that is argued to provide a more powerful and elegant account of the semantics of ‘knowledge’-attributions than many of its competitors. Each of the views discussed in this book is outlined in detail by offering a clear and precise account of the main principles underlying each view and how they aim to explain the pertinent data and resolve philosophical puzzles and challenges. The book also provides charts outlining the relations between the positions discussed and offers suggestions for further readings.

Abstract:
The United States of America has been the most powerful country in the world for the past seventy years, but will Washington’s reign as the world’s leading superpower continue? The U.S. National Security Strategy declares that the return of great power competition with Russia and China is the greatest threat to U.S. national security and economic well-being. Perhaps surprisingly, international relations scholarship does not have much to say about who wins great power rivalries, and many contemporary analysts argue that America’s autocratic rivals will succeed in disrupting or displacing U.S. global leadership. In sharp contrast, this book makes the novel argument that democracies enjoy built-in advantages in international geopolitics. Drawing on the writings of political philosophers—such as Herodotus, Machiavelli, and Montesquieu—and cutting-edge social science research, this book explains the unique economic, diplomatic, and military advantages that democracies bring to the international arena. It then carefully considers the advantages and disadvantages possessed by autocratic great powers. These ideas are then examined in a series of seven case studies of democratic-versus-autocratic rivalries throughout history, from ancient Greece to the Cold War. The book then unpacks the implications of this analysis for the United States, Russia, and China today. It concludes that, despite its many problems, America’s fundamentals are still much better than Russia’s and China’s. By making the “hard-power” argument for democracy, this book provides an innovative way of thinking about power in international politics and provides an optimistic assessment about the future of American global leadership.

Abstract:
This book examines the use of wedge strategies, a form of divisive statecraft designed to isolate adversaries from allies and potential supporters to gain key advantages. With a multidimensional argument about the power of accommodation in competition, and a survey of alliance diplomacy around both world wars, the book artfully analyzes the past and future performance of wedge strategy in great power politics. It argues that nations attempting to use wedge strategy do best when they credibly accommodate likely or established allies of their enemies. It also argues that a divider's own alliances can pose obstacles to success and explains the conditions that help dividers overcome them. The book advances these claims in eight focused studies of alliance diplomacy surrounding the world wars. Through those narratives, the book adeptly assesses the record of countries that tried an accommodative wedge strategy, and why ultimately, they succeeded or failed. These calculated actions often became turning points, desired or not, in a nation's established power. For policymakers today facing threats to power from great power competitors, the book argues that a deeper historical and theoretical grasp of the role of these wedge strategies in alliance politics and grand strategy is necessary. The book drives home the contemporary relevance of the analysis with a survey of China's potential to use such strategies to divide India from the United States, and the United States' potential to use them to forestall a China–Russia alliance, and closes with a review of key theoretical insights for policy.

Creator Theology has important but not decisive advantages over both Worship-Worthiness Theology and Perfect Being Theology. So it is important to see how far Creator Theology can go toward sustaining the starting points of these competitor positions. We begin by correcting the history of the discussion of this issue, for the historical discussion confuses our metaphysical issue with an epistemological one. Once this confusion is corrected, we will be in a better position to see that part of the judgement of history on Creator Theology is correct: it can’t derive the starting points of its competitors. We will also be in a position to see, however, how minimal this disability is.

Abstract:
In an effort to enhance the learning process in higher education, a new model for Competition-Based Learning (CBL) is presented. The new model utilizes two well-known learning models, namely, the Project-Based Learning (PBL) and competitions. The new model is also applied in a networked environment with emphasis on collective learning as well as collective outcomes. The new model, which is referred to as CBL, provides educators with an alternative solution to overcome many of student's deficiencies associated with traditional learning practices; such as lack of motivation, lack of self esteem, insufficient practical and real-life experience, and inadequate team work practices. The new CBL model makes a clear distinction between PBL and competitions and CBL. It avoids the disadvantages of competitions, while at the same time gaining from the many benefits of PBL. Identification features of CBL, components of CBL, as well as advantages are presented. An open source Learning Management System (LMS), namely, Moodle is used for the implementation of a networked environment to support CBL.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims at providing a comprehensive overview of the time-sharing accommodations and hotels, based on the view obtained from the pandemic health restrictions. Numerous areas were evaluated, including cancellations, rebooking, resumption of operations, hygiene measures, customer attraction practices, strategy adjustment and perception of competitors’ activities, advantages and disadvantages. Focus is given on identifying the differences and similarities in the above areas, when comparing both forms of accommodation. Due to the nature of the subject and the lack of previous relative research, the qualitative research methodology is adopted. This has been achieved via the conduction of interviews, in a sample consisting of ten hotels and ten sharing-type accommodation businesses in various Greek regions. As for the results, cancellations were significant across the entire sample. However, hotels had a lower cancellation rate on average, as well as a higher level of rebooking, with almost all members in the sample reopening. Important disparities were observed in the approach to sanitary measures, as hotels achieved full consensus concerning their adoption and their necessity. Additional differences have been observed on marketing strategies, with the time-sharing accommodations being based more on price-competition. Finally, the contrasting strengths and weaknesses of each accommodation type are being examined.

Advantages and disadvantages of federalism as much as the federal system is the preferred option of Americans who historically have had a skeptical view of centralized power, it is far from a perfect system for the effective operations of government. Despite its many virtues, the shortcomings inherent in the US federal system lead many observers to question whether it is adequate to meet the needs of increasingly complex social and economic problems. Advantages include flexibility of standards and in dealing with religious diversity, experimentation, varying policies at different levels of government, keeping central government in check, and providing citizen choice. Disadvantages include competition between the states, inefficiency, inequality, and lack of accountability.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the role of arbitration in competition law as well as its advantages and disadvantages when it comes to resolving disputes compared to other approaches. It provides examples of competition law issues resolved through arbitration and how arbitration has been used by authorities such as the European Commission to police and enforce commitments. It also discusses the jurisdictional competence of arbitrators in relation to competition law disputes and issues, such as challenging the extent and validity of an arbitration clause. The chapter proceeds by analysing the arbitrability of competition law issues, the construction and use of arbitration clauses in competition cases, the doctrine of ‘separability’ and the illegality of agreement containing arbitration clause, and the anti-competitive effect of an arbitration agreement. Finally, it describes the practicalities of resolving competition law issues through arbitration, along with the rules governing appeals and enforcement of arbitral awards.

Abstract:
Over the last 20 years platform business models become increasingly important in global economies. Digital economy and platform business models offer great potential for adding value to digital or digital enabled products. Companies can gain significant network effects and connect with different user groups via digital transaction platforms.Companies planning to enter platform business models traditionally have a choice between ‘making or buying’ a platform or enter existing ecosystems. Both options come with significant disadvantages in terms of risk, costs and governance. A promising innovative option for smaller players like SMEs or startup companies is the “co-opetition” approach. Companies co-operating with competitors to pool their economic strength and network effects in a joint platform and reduce market entry risks. In addition, potentials for reducing the costs of setting up IT infrastructures can be realised.Despite the advantages, the co-opetition approach also presents companies with design-related challenges. One challenge, for example, is to sustainably protect key competitive advantages and unique resources despite the cooperation and intensive exchange with competitors. If two or more competitors work together on a digital platform solution to collect, analyse and use machine data, the data could create unintended transparency about machine performance, strengths and weaknesses. Clear demarcation, control options and the building of trust between the companies are needed here. At the operational level, for example, it is important to establish a culture of cooperation among employees that allows for intensive exchange in some areas and competitive thinking and behaviour in others. In this paper we present a model for co-opetition in platform-economy combining concepts of platform economy, co-opetition and agility. Based on theoretical concepts a three-dimensional model has been elaborated that reduces complexity and provides decision support for relationship building with competitors in the dimensions: (1) strategy to enter platform economy (2) design layer which allows structural but agile coordination of relationships and (3) perspectives that need consideration on platforms. By combining the different concepts and perspectives, the model provides a theoretical framework for decision-making and supports companies in assessing the potentials of coopetition and realising them through appropriate design.

In ASME 2010 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2010-28269.

Abstract:
As global markets saturate and competition intensifies, many manufacturers are focusing on benchmarking families of products alongside individual products to gain valuable insight and strategic advantage over their competitors. Unfortunately, the advantages of benchmarking families of products are often undermined by the limited capability of current benchmarking tools to assist in this process. While methods have been proposed for product family analysis and benchmarking, a major problem is the way in which the component details are collected, and few of the methods have been integrated together. Benchmarking and product family analysis is also time-consuming and subject to human variability since the process is typically done manually without the aid of software. To address these problems, we introduce the Product Family Analysis Toolkit (PFA Toolkit), which combines several popular benchmarking tools to streamline and standardize the process of product family benchmarking. We describe the toolkit’s features and capabilities and then discuss its functionality and usability. The advantages of automating the product family benchmarking process are discussed along with future work.

Serafica, Ramonette, and Queen Cel Oren. Should the Philippines Adopt Net Neutrality Regulations? Philippine Institute for Development Studies, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.62986/pn2024.08.

Full text
Abstract:
Net neutrality is a contentious issue in internet regulation, looking at nondiscrimination and pricing policy. It espouses the idea that broadband service providers should charge consumers only once for internet access, not favor one content provider over another, and not charge content providers for sending information over broadband lines to end users. Advocates argue that this fosters innovation and protects freedom of expression, while critics warn that it could stifle investment and innovation. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of adopting net neutrality principles in the proposed Open Access in Data Transmission Act. While net neutrality can address legal obstacles, infrastructure gaps, and network discrimination, its unintended impacts on investment and innovation remain ambiguous. Thus, policymakers are advised to identify the public interest at stake, consider existing competition regulations and consumer protection laws, and assess possible impacts on the internet value chain. Also recommended is the elimination of barriers to entry and other restrictions within the internet access connectivity segment of the internet value chain.
