Abstract:
Understanding how people use communication technologies (CTs) in close relationships requires examining interdependencies in or patterns of CT use in those relationships. We combined channel complementarity theory and media multiplexity theory to investigate first-year college students’ ( N = 155) use of CTs (video chat, phone calls, and text messaging) in close, long-distance friendships over a 3- to 10-day period. Overall, CTs were used complementarily. However, complementary use of phone calls and text messaging was higher in closer friendships. In contrast, phone calls and video chat were complementary at low but not high levels of closeness. These findings suggest utility in combining channel complementarity theory and media multiplexity theory to understand the “web” of CTs used in daily communication in long-distance friendships and point to similarities in and differences between CTs that might affect complementarity.

Abstract:
With the increasing proportion of renewable energy in power generation, the mixed utilization of multiple renewable energy sources has gradually become a new trend. Using the natural complementary characteristics of wind power, photovoltaic, and hydropower to evaluate the complementary potential of various energy sources has become a hot issue in the research of mixed utilization. Given that traditional complementarity research can only assess the complementarity between two energy sources, this paper proposes a method to simultaneously determine the complementarity between three large-scale renewable energy sources. Firstly, a three-dimensional vector represents the complementary characteristic combination of any two energy sources. The complementary characteristics of the three energy sources were obtained by finding the optimal solution for the three-dimensional vector. Finally, power stations were selected, located in different spatial areas on the world’s largest renewable energy base in Qinghai, China, as the research object to analyze and verify the complementary characteristics of wind-power–photovoltaic-power–hydropower at different spatiotemporal scales. The results show significant differences in the complementary characteristics of different time scales. The farther the spatial distance between different power stations, the stronger their complementarity. The best complementary index on the monthly and daily scales was improved by 8.49% and 6.51%. This study provides a new focus for the future evaluation of the complementary utilization potential of large-scale joint renewable energy in different world regions.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper attempts to analyze the relationship between the complementarity degrees of imperfect complementary products and sales strategies and give appropriate sales strategies for a two-stage supply chain. Design/methodology/approach With respect to two-stage supply chain consisting of two manufacturers who produce imperfect complementary products and one retailer who sells the products, aiming at bundling sales strategy, the authors define complementarity elasticity of products and use it to measure the degree of complementary between two products. Based on Stackelberg game and cooperation, the authors analyze the relationship between the complementarity degrees of imperfect complementary products and appropriate sales strategies. Findings As the impact of complementarity degree on sales strategy decision-making is better, the authors can pinpoint out which sales decision-making is optimal and which bundling sales strategy is the best for a two-stage supply chain. Considering that the degree of complementarity has a significant impact on the product sales strategy, the authors can point out which sales decision-making is optimal, that is, which bundled sales strategy is the optimal in the secondary supply chain of selling complementary products. Practical implications An innovative bundling can expand the sales of existing products and new products. It helps a retailer transcend and defeat competitors by reducing marketing expenses while increasing profits. Proper use of bundling can improve consumers utility and create an overall positive effect for both the enterprises and consumer. Originality/value The research can help some retailers to make many appropriate bundling sales strategies.

Abstract:
PurposeThis paper aims to examine the equilibrium limit price charged by a producer trying to deter the entry of a firm that can choose one of the two markets of complementary goods.Design/methodology/approachThe authors model a dynamic game of incomplete information solved using a “perfect Bayesian equilibrium” approach.FindingsIt is shown that an incumbent will be willing to spend more resources – i.e. charge a lower limit price – to deter entry into its market as products become more complementary. This is because additional benefits are gained from entry deterrence by facing a more competitive market in the complementary product. The additional benefits of entry deterrence are shown to be a function of the degree of complementarity between goods.Practical implicationsA managerial implication of this article is that firms are willing to compete more fiercely to send an entrant to the other's incumbent market as the degree of complementarity between goods increases. An interesting conclusion that is derived from the above analysis is that managers should invest to understand the interdependences (e.g. complementarities) of the goods they sell, since the strategic variables chosen to compete may be affected by them, in some cases in a non‐trivial way.Social implicationsFrom a public policy perspective, the main contribution of this paper is to point out that regulators who analyze predatory pricing, or other (probably) illegal “low‐price strategies”, should consider the degree of complementarity between goods and its effect on pricing.Originality/valueAs far as the authors' knowledge goes, there are no other papers that analyze entry decisions involving multiple markets of complementary goods.

Abstract:
The combination of complementary patents can better promote the advancement of technology, and complementary companies can help companies bring better benefits. This topic has carried out patent complementarity research and proposed a patent complementarity algorithm based on patent technology tree. By calculating the complementarity calculation method of a given patent, the company with the strongest complementarity with known patents is obtained. First, the patent text is represented sentence vectors by LSTM model. Second, the generated sentence vectors are clustered, and the patent information is marked with different categories. Then, the patent word vector is obtained by the CNN text classification model to obtain the confidence that the patent belongs to the corresponding category. Finally, the confidence of the patent and the complementarity coefficient based on the patent classification number are combined to obtain the interpatent complementarity. Calculate the average of the complementarity between all patents and a given patent under the same company, and the company with the greatest complementarity is the complementary company sought. The method combines the patent text and the patent classification number, obtains the similarity of the text semantics through the deep learning model, and quantifies the complementarity of the patents, and the discriminating basis is more accurate and reliable.

[163]-172).<br>We have long assumed that being face to face is the best environment for social interaction. But is "being there" the best we can aspire to? One common approach to improving face-to-face contexts is to add new communication channels - a strategy often described as creating "backchannels." In my work, I use a series of novel complementary communication systems to show how adding communication platforms to collaborative situations can be useful while also arguing for a new conceptual model of a main stage and a side stage (in the Goffman sense) that contrasts with the traditional model of backchannels. I describe a series of projects that embody this approach and explore its limits. My work covers virtual world meetings and presentations, an audience interaction tool for large groups (backchan.nl), a tablet-based system for small group discussions (Tin Can), and a platform for connecting huge distributed audiences (ROAR). In each of these projects I trace my three major research themes: understanding how conversational grounding operates in these environments, how non-verbal actions complement text-based interaction, and how people make decisions about how to manage their attention in environments with multiple simultaneous communication channels.<br>by Drew Harry.<br>Ph.D.

Abstract:
What children eat in the first year of life is essential with a view to adequate growth and development. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding up to six months of age and that complementary foods be introduced from that age onwards. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of breastfeeding among children under 1 year old, as well as to describe the introduction of complementary foods among the children in this study. A cross-sectional and descriptive study was realized among 821 infants under 1 year old who were vaccinated in the Second Phase of the National Vaccination Campaign at Health Centers in Guarapuava-PR, Brazil. Data collection involved the mothers and/or responsibles for infants under 1 year old who came to the Health Centers on that day, using the questionnaire elaborated and validated by the Health Institute of the São Paulo State Health Secretary and its partners. The collected data were subject to simple frequency analysis of all variables. As to breastfeeding indicators, 68.9% of the infants received breastfeeding, with 86.2% and 39.8% of children under 4 and 6 months, respectively. Exclusive and predominant breastfeeding indicators corresponded to 46.4% and 41.4%, respectively, among children under 4 months old, against 37.3% and 18.9% for children under 6 months of age. 31.9% and 45.3% of children under 4 and 6 months old were receiving nonhuman milk. 5.1% of children aged 4 months or older and 14% of those aged 6 months or older received complementary feeding, having consumed tea, water, juice, fruit, vegetable soup and homemade food during the last 24 hours. This study has shown that Breastfeeding – Breastfeeding and Exclusive Breastfeeding indicators remain much below the levels set by the WHO and that complementary foods are introduced at an early stage for children who are breastfed or not.

Abstract:
The overarching question of this dissertation is in what ways complementary currencies (CC) systems can contribute to environmental sustainability from an institutional and ecological economics perspective. More particularly, the research focuses on household energy consumption, as it is an important target for policy makers in the EU. The first three chapters focus on the emerging trend of using CC systems as top-down instruments for environmental sustainability. Our findings relate to developing a taxonomy of these systems, designing new top-down CC systems adapted to the context of energy savings in the household sector, exploring the influence of these new systems on the quality of motivation in the light of Self-Determination Theory and investigating the acceptability and effectiveness of these systems. In the fourth and last chapter of this dissertation, we approach our research question from a bottom-up angle and, using an inductive methodology, we explore how community currencies could act as an organising instrument capable of helping cohousing communities achieve their energy-efficiency potential. Finally, we conclude by highlighting our contributions regarding the structure and important features of these systems, how they can be used in an ecological economics paradigm, and how they can set rules for collective action in an institutional perspective.<br>Doctorat en Sciences économiques et de gestion<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Irving, Adam. "River novel & complementary discourses." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2016. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/617277/.

Full text
Abstract:
The complementary discourse explores the function and value of narrative and why mankind seems to have always seen events, connected or unconnected, as stories. It investigates how we process and perceive fiction and compares narratives found in non-fiction, police witness statements, films and diaries to consider why the human brain seems hard-wired to transform events into narrative. The accompanying novel, A River, is set in Manchester over a three hundred year period. The events in the chapters are presented in reverse order; from the 1990's to the 1720's, beginning with the chronological end of the tale and working towards the starting point. The chapter's regression highlights how a familiar location is constantly in flux and sometimes shares little with the same place of the past. Time and location are both treated as characters, playing important roles in the personality of the city. The buildings and streets, events, food and language have all been researched for accuracy, either first hand or using diaries, films, maps and photographs. The novel occupies a grey area between fiction and history. The narrative actively avoids the traditional novel formulas of historical fiction and magic realism and is intended to be an accessible experimental novel, questioning the idea of what a story is.

Abstract:
Building multiple hash tables has been proven a successful technique for indexing massive databases, which can guarantee a desired level of overall performance. However, existing hash based multi-indexing methods suffer from the heavy redundancy, without strong table complementarity and effective hash code learning. To address the problems, this paper proposes a complementary binary quantization (CBQ) method to jointly learning multiple hash tables. It exploits the power of incomplete binary coding based on prototypes to align the original space and the Hamming space, and further utilizes the nature of multi-indexing search to jointly reduce the quantization loss based on the prototype based hash function. Our alternating optimization adaptively discovers the complementary prototype sets and the corresponding code sets of a varying size in an efficient way, which together robustly approximate the data relations. Our method can be naturally generalized to the product space for long hash codes. Extensive experiments carried out on two popular large-scale tasks including Euclidean and semantic nearest neighbor search demonstrate that the proposed CBQ method enjoys the strong table complementarity and significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art, with up to 57.76\% performance gains relatively.
