Abstract:
The research into the dependence of translation techniques choice on the term structure in the source language on the material of rendering 603 English single-word terms and terminological collocations (related to pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics) into Ukrainian contributed to suggesting the following preliminary conclusions. The choice of translation techniques in rendering single-word terms depends, to a certain degree, on their structure. The share of the dictionary equivalents decreases with the increase in the term complexity, falling from 82% in the case of simple terms and prefixal derivatives to 58% concerning the suffixal, 34% – prefix-suffixal and 9% – compound lexemes. The transcoding share is minimal with prefixal and simple terms, steadily growing with suffixal, prefix-suffixal and compound lexemes. Dictionary equivalents complemented by transcoding may be enough to render simple terms, prefixal derivatives may additionally require contextual substitution or addition in the case of suffixal lexemes. The growth in the terminology complexity results in the expansion of the translation procedures ranges to four or even six techniques in rendering the prefix-suffixal terms. Adjectival, participial and verbal two-word collocations are mostly translated by calquing. The addition of a noun reduces its share, increasing the role of transformations. The correlation of translation techniques depends on the nature of the added element. If it is an adjective, the impact of calquing grows; the addition of a noun contributes to the expansion of transformations.

In children acquiring various languages, the early mastery of determiners strongly predicts syntactic development. What makes determiners important is not yet clear as there is a linguistic controversy regarding their syntactic behaviour. Some consider determiners to be similar to adjectives and to modify common nouns, while others consider the common nouns their complements. This article aims to find out which of the two basic syntactic operations, complementation or adjunct attribution, children learn when they master determiner–noun combinations in their early speech. Pearson correlations of determiner–nominal combinations with verb–noun combinations and attributive adjective–noun combinations were computed in early two-word-long sentences of a large sample of young English-speaking children. Determiner–nominal combinations were very highly correlated with verb–noun sentences, whereas the correlation with adjective–noun combinations was much lower. It appears that determiner–noun combinations are a type of complementation. When children learn them early, they apparently learn the syntactic principle underlying such combinations which then can be transferred to other syntactic constructions.

Abstract This article presents a discourse approach to the case variation between the nominative and the partitive in Finnish copula complement adjectives. Using video recordings of spontaneous spoken Finnish, I show that the case marking of these adjectives reflects the discourse functions of demonstratives, which constitute the vast majority of copula subjects in the material. I also demonstrate that aspects of stance-taking in interaction are of relevance for the distribution of case in this construction. Based on the results of the present study, as well as on previous discussion in the literature, I analyse Finnish copulative constructions with partitive and nominative adjectives in terms of conversational patterns of subjectivity and intersubjectivity.

Abstract:
This article traces the complement selection properties of the adjective accustomed from the eighteenth century to the present. The adjective has frequently selected sentential complements, but the study illustrates a major change affecting the form of such complements. In the eighteenth century they were regularly of the to infinitive type, but today they are almost as regularly of the to -ing type. Both syntactic and semantic factors are identified in the article as having an impact on the change. The study also compares the pace of the change in British and American English, arguing that incipient change was discernible in both varieties as early as the nineteenth century. It is argued further that, at the present time, the change has been completed more fully in American English than in British English. This conclusion is reached by considering sentences with extraction or filler–gap dependencies. The data in the article come from large electronic corpora.

RESUMO: Este artigo visa investigar a tradução em língua portuguesa de adjetivos atributivos em um trecho da obra em língua inglesa Heart of Darkness (CONRAD, 1994) em três estudos. O primeiro analisa as opções de tradução desse trecho em quatro traduções publicadas nos anos 1984, 1996, 2008 e 2011. O segundo examina o insumo da tradução automática desse mesmo trecho fornecido pelo Google Translate. O terceiro analisa textos-alvo produzidos em uma tarefa de pós-edição monolíngue, cujo texto-fonte foi esse mesmo trecho, por oito estudantes de uma disciplina de prática de tradução. Dessa maneira, integra-se uma análise do processo e do produto tradutórios para verificar padrões na tradução de grupos nominais com um, dois e três adjetivos atributivos presentes no trecho analisado. Para a realização desses estudos, utilizou-se parte do RETRAD (Corpus de (Re)Traduções), o qual foi complementado com o trecho traduzido automaticamente pelo Google Translate e com os textos pós-editados pelos estudantes. Os resultados apontam alguns padrões sintáticos e lexicais recorrentes nos grupos nominais com até dois adjetivos atributivos nas traduções publicadas, havendo, no caso de grupos nominais com mais de dois adjetivos, a inclusão de preposições e conjunções em português. Observou-se também uma maior variedade sintática e lexical nos grupos nominais com três ou mais adjetivos atributivos nas traduções publicadas. O fato que os estudantes fizeram poucas alterações nos textos-alvo pós-editados parece indicar que esses participantes não se sentem confiantes para produzir o texto-alvo sem consulta ao texto-fonte. Desse modo, é necessário incentivar o uso de corpora em sala de aula, expor aos estudantes as limitações de sistemas de tradução automática e as estratégias de solução de problemas, levando-os a refletir sobre os processos de tradução e de pós-edição. Isso contribuirá para o aumento da confiança desses estudantes em suas escolhas e para a produção de textos-alvo que representam a língua em uso.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: adjetivos atributivos; sistema de tradução automática; pós-edição monolíngue; linguística de corpus; pesquisa experimental.ABSTRACT: This article aims at investigating the translation in Brazilian Portuguese of attributive adjectives in an excerpt from Heart of Darkness (CONRAD, 1994) in three studies. The first analyses the translation of the same excerpt in four translations published in 1984, 1996, 2008 and 2011. The second examines the machine-translated output from English into Portuguese of the same excerpt as provided by Google Translate. The third analyzes the target texts produced in a monolingual post-editing task performed by students of a translation practice subject. Thus, it integrates a process and product analysis to verify patterns of translating noun phrases with one, two and three attributive adjectives in the analyzed excerpt. For this study, part of Corpus de (Re)traduções (RETRAD) was used, which was complemented by the machine-translated output and students’ post-edited texts. Results point to recurrent syntactic and lexical patterns in the translation of noun phrases with up to two attributive adjectives in published translations, with the addition of prepositions and conjunctions in noun phrases with more than two adjectives. Greater syntactic and lexical variety is also found in the translations of noun phrases with three or more attributive adjectives in published translations. The fact that students made a few changes in the post-edited target texts seems to indicate that these participants do not feel confident to produce the target text without referring to the source text. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the use of corpora in translation classroom, to expose students to the limitations of machine translations systems and to problem-solving strategies, leading them to reflect on the translation and post-editing processes. This will contribute to increase students' confidence in their choices and to produce target texts that represent the language in use.KEYWORDS: attributive adjectives; machine translation system; monolingual post-editing, corpus linguistics; experimental research.

Abstract:
The present compilation thesis investigates adjectives complemented by that- and to-clauses. More specifically, the thesis is concerned with extraposed (e.g. it is likely that she will win and it is important to win) and post-predicate clauses (e.g. I’m sure that he’s alive and I’m glad to see you). The thesis is most fundamentally concerned with the study of linguistic variation. Thus the aim of the thesis is to explain why a certain construction is used in a given context. The data used in the studies comes from the British National Corpus (BNC). Study I proposes a semi-automated approach to variable patterns in corpus data. The study describes the creation of a computer program which has been designed to facilitate the extraction and coding of corpus data. In Study II, extraposed and post-predicate that- and to-clauses are contrasted in terms of their variation across genres, their lexical diversity and the meanings expressed by the adjectives most frequently found in each construction. Study III tests the applicability of the Complexity Principle and the Uniform Information Density Principle on adjectival data, by examining the variation between retaining and omitting the complementizer that across extraposed and post-predicate clauses. Study IV tests whether the syntactic status of I’m sure is similar to that of I think, i.e. whether it exhibits the same signs of grammaticalization. The results show that extraposed and post-predicate that-clauses are associated with similar meanings but differ in most other respects. Compared to post-predicate that-clauses, extraposed that-clauses are more frequent in formal genres, they are found with fewer instances of that-omission, and they are found to be more frequently represented in cognitively complex environments. Similarly, the results also show that extraposed and post-predicate to-clauses are associated with similar meanings, but differ in terms of their genre distribution. Instead, in terms of meaning, extraposed that- and to-clauses on the one hand, and post-predicate that- and to-clauses on the other, are similar to each other. The thesis highlights the importance of studying adjectival complementation in its own right, and not to treat it as subordinate to, or part of, verbal complementation.

La presente etude porte principalement sur les sequences de+infinitif apres les adjectifs evaluatifs de contenu psychologique tels que courageux, bete, gentil, qui ont fait l'objet de plusieurs analyses. L'examen des diverses analyses proposees pour rendre compte de leurs proprietes permet de rejeter certaines idees sur leur statut syntaxique. Il ne faut pas les identifier comme des "cp" (complementizer phrase), mais comme des complements prepositionnels. Mais ces complements prepositionnels ne pourraient s'analyser ni comme des complements de l'adjectif, ni meme comme des complements de constituant : ils ne sont pas des expansions propres a l'adjectif, et ne participent meme pas a la creation du contenu propositionnel. Leurs proprietes syntaxiques et interpretatives incitent, en revanche, a les ranger parmi les complements de phrase, et plus precisement parmi les complements d'enonce qui ajoutent des commentaires a la valeur de verite de l'enonce. On peut considerer comme un argument en faveur de cette analyse que l'on peut trouver dans certaines constructions verbales des elements qui non seulement ont la meme forme et la meme interpretation, mais aussi se comportent syntaxiquement de la meme maniere. The examination of these analyses for explaining their properties calls for rejecting some ideas on their syntactic status. They can be identified not as the "cp" (complemetizer phrase), but as the prepositional complements but these prepositional complements can not be analyzed as the complements of the adjective nor as the complements of constituent : they are not proper adjective expansions, they do not participate to the creation of the propositional content either. However, thier syntactic and interpretative properties incite to classify among the sentence complements, more precisely, among the complements of "utterance" which add some commentaries to the value of the asserted truth one can consider this as an argument in favor of this analysis : in certain verbal constructions, one can find some elements which not only have the same form and the same interpretation, but also act in syntactically the same manner. If one considers these elements as verbal complements or causal circumstantial complements, then their peculiarities could rest unexplained. The infinitive complements in question can not appear indipendently, but they are conditioned by the elements of the sentence to which they are accompanied. These restrictions of usage do not pose a problem to the analysis but aid the analysis. It is the type of jugement which they serve for the speaker to construct, that explain the possibility for certain adjectives (or verbs) and the impossibility for other adjectives (or verbs), of constructing with the infinitive complements in question

Abstract:
The aim of the research is to analyse the expression and contents of non-morphological evidentiality in Lithuanian realized by neuter (non-agreeing) adjectives and adverbs. The thesis focuses on the non-agreeing adjectives and the adverbs that derive from the semantic domains of perception, comparison and knowledge and thus have the potential to acquire evidential meanings. The study explores the morphosyntactic properties (Complement-Taking-Predicates and adverbials) of the markers under consideration, their quantitative parameters and semantic functional distribution in fiction and academic discourse. The study is corpus-driven and the data have been obtained from the Corpus of the Contemporary Lithuanian Language, namely from the subcorpus of fiction, and from the Corpus of Academic Lithuanian. The analysis of the morphosyntactic properties of the markers and their semantic functional distribution suggests that in Lithuanian the non-agreeing adjectives convey evidential meanings more frequently than the adverbs because the adverbs mainly function as predicate modifiers. The main evidential value is inference based on perceptual or conceptual sources of evidence. The non-agreeing adjectives and the adverbs under consideration can also express the meanings of epistemic modality, expectation or function as pragmatic markers.<br>Pagrindinis darbo tikslas yra išanalizuoti nemorfologinio evidencialumo raišką ir turinį, realizuojamus bevardės giminės (nederinamaisiais) būdvardžiais ir prieveiksmiais grožinės literatūros tekstuose ir lietuvių mokslo kalboje. Tyrimo objektą sudaro nederinamieji būdvardžiai ir prieveiksmiai, kurių leksinės reikšmės atspindi semantinius laukus, turinčius potencialą žymėti žinių šaltinį. Darbe analizuojami šių vienetų morfosintaksiniai bruožai (komplementiniai predikatai ir adverbialai), tiriami jų kiekybiniai rodikliai ir atskleidžiama semantinė funkcinė distribucija. Šioje disertacijoje atliekamas tyrimas naudojant tekstynų metodologiją. Tyrimo medžiaga yra surinkta iš grožinės literatūros patekstynio, esančio Dabartinės lietuvių kalbos tekstyne ir Lietuvių mokslo kalbos tekstyno. Nederinamųjų būdvardžių ir prieveiksmių morfosintaksinių bruožų ir semantinių funkcinių ypatybių analizė suponuoja, kad lietuvių kalboje nederinamieji būdvardžiai dažniau perteikia žinių šaltinio reikšmes negu prieveiksmiai, nes šie vartojami kaip predikato modifikatoriai. Pagrindinė evidencinė reikšmė, būdinga nagrinėjamiems žymikliams, yra numanymas, pagrįstas percepciniu arba konceptualiuoju žinių šaltiniu. Nagrinėjami vienetai vartojami ir kaip episteminiai, vertinimo arba pragmatiniai žymikliai.

Abstract:
The objective of the thesis is to describe and compare the modifying uses of two adjectives which can appear both as premodifiers as well as bare postmodifiers, namely available and responsible. Both modifying positions are examined with respect to the textual environment, the complexity of noun phrases and adjective phrases in which the adjectives function, reference and other features in order to outline the patterns in which these two adjectives appear. The data for the analytical part have been extracted from the British National Corpus using the basic query and limiting the search to the written part of the corpus. After manual assessment of the initial samples of 500 concordance lines, 154 concordance lines containing the adjective available and 147 containing the adjective responsible proved to be suitable for the analysis. The final samples of the data are further categorized and analysed concerning the complexity of the noun phrase, premodification, postmodification and complementation of the adjectives, semantic preference of the head nouns, and the motivation for the pre- or postnominal placement of the modifiers. Abstract:
The present thesis studies the copular verbs and their co-occurrence with adjectival complements in contemporary written and spoken English. The theoretical part of this work first describes the copular verbs in terms of their types and types of complements they take. A corpus-based approach to copular verbs follows. A part of the theory also provides an overview of the terminology that is used with copular verbs. The work consists of two parts: the theoretical part which introduces the topic and describes the features of both the principal copula be and other copular verbs and the analytical part which analyses written language data excerpted from the Araneum Anglicum corpus and spoken language data from the Spoken BNC2014 corpus. The analytical part focuses on the following seven verbs: feel, look, seem, remain, become, go and get and their adjectival complements. These adjectives are then analysed in terms of their frequency and collocability with the verbs. The collocate lists of all verbs are then compared between the two corpora. Finally, the analysis also attempts to categorize the adjectives semantically. The analysis also focuses on adverbs which occur in these constructions and which function is to modify the adjectives. The results of the analytical part are summarized in the conclusion.

Abstract:
The interplay between peace and justice plays an important role in almost any contemporary conflict. Peace and conflict studies have generally devoted more attention to conflict than to peace. Peace is often described in adjectives, such as negative/positive peace, liberal peace or democratic peace. But what elements make a peace just? Just war theory, peacebuilding, or transitional justice provide different perspectives on the dialectic relation between peace and justice and the methods of establishing peace after conflict. Experiences such as the Colombian peace process show that peace is increasingly judicialized. This volume analyses some of the situational, normative, and relational elements of peace in processes of transition. It explores six core themes: conceptual approaches towards just peace, macro-principles, the nexus to security and stability, protection of persons and public goods, rule of law and economic reform and accountability. It engages with understudied issues, such as the pros and cons of robust UN mandates, the link between environment protection and indigenous peoples, the treatment of illegal settlements, the feasibility of vetting practices or the protection labour rights in post-conflict economies. It argues that just peace requires only not negotiation, agreement and compromise (e.g., moderation), but contextual understandings of law, multiple dimensions of justice and strategies of prevention. It complements the two earlier volumes on the legal contours of jus post bellum, namely Just Post Bellum: Mapping the Normative Foundations (2014) and Environmental Protection and Transitions from Conflict to Peace: Clarifying Norms, Principles and Practices (2017).

Abstract:
The study of product visual attributes is usually performed through questionnaires which provide information about the conscious subjective opinions of the consumer. This work complements such method by combining Event-Related Potentials (ERP) and Eye-Tracking (ET) techniques and using semantic priming to elicit user perception. Our study focuses on package design and follows the basic structure of classic ERP experiments where participants are presented an ordered sequence of frames (stimuli) in a computer screen for a certain period of time: attention frame, semantic priming frame (descriptive adjective), neutral background, target frame (product image), and a question regarding coherence between priming and target frames. The eye-tracking system works in combination with the ERP experiment. The results of our study reveal the connection between adjectives (semantic priming) and package design attributes (based on the analysis of the N400 ERP component), and the connection between adjectives and the specific visual elements that get more attention (based on the information provided by eye-tracking analysis software).
