AbstractMetaphors are considered as instruments crucial for persuasion. However, while many studies and works have focused on their emotive, communicative, and persuasive effects, the argumentative dimension that represents the core of their “persuasiveness” is almost neglected. This paper addresses the problem of explaining how metaphors can communicate arguments, and how it is possible to reconstruct and justify them. To this purpose, a distinction is drawn between the arguments that are communicated metaphorically and interpreted based on relevance considerations, and the ones that are trig

AbstractThe intersection of gaming and gambling has a long lineage. In recent years this process has amplified, arguably accelerated by developing technological infrastructures which facilitate rapid payment purchases and online and real-time systems which allow companies to communicate directly with users and users to communicate with each other. This chapter traces key issues relating to some notable recent examples of the gaming/gambling intersection. It includes controversies about the status of social casino games and loot boxes; the development and expansion of daily fantasy sports markets; the betting and wagering of skins won or bought through digital games, and; rising opportunities to bet on esports. Each exemplifies how these activities are products of a unique set of social and economic circumstances, how corporations are diversifying and becoming part of a more complex gaming/gambling ecosystem and using data to drive growth, all of which raise particular issues for consumer protection.

The current discourses on gender affect its digital construction. Mirroring the gendered discourses on masculine and feminine roles and patterns of behavior, digital media spaces impose similar restrictions and expectations on female users as those experienced by women in their offline activities. This chapter offers an analysis of how the World Wide Web and digital technologies influence gender identity politics in contemporary Russian society. Abstract:
Abstract Model-based testing is a widely-used vital technique for testing software running in a complex environment. In this paper, we propose extensions to existing model-based tools to apply this technique to software that employs the MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol for transmitting messages, commonly used in the Internet of Things (IoT) environment. First, in the finite state machine used for generating test cases in a model-based testing framework, we introduce a type of transition that is triggered when receiving MQTT messages. Second, we extend the finite-state machine so that it produces test cases that reflect the characteristics of IoT software – a large number of relatively simple devices communicate with servers. Third, the concept of time is introduced into the finite state machine. Naturally, this is necessary for verifying the properties of software that runs for a long time. Moreover, to facilitate such verification, both real-time and virtual time are introduced. We implemented these extensions into a model-based testing tool, Modbat, and conducted a small experiment to confirm the feasibility, gaining positive results.

This paper describes how AVEVA’s Integrated Engineering & Design for Lean Shipbuilding approach supports this by enabling users to collaboratively control and communicate change, to work more efficiently and to increase the quality of project data and deliverables. The principles of Engineering & Design for Lean Shipbuilding will be illustrated with two use cases, emphasisi

While traditionally archaeological research has mainly been focused on individual cultural heritage monuments or distinct archaeological sites, the Austrian based Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology goes beyond the limitations of discrete sites in order to understand their archaeological context. This is achieved by investigating the space in-between the sites, studying entire archaeological landscapes from the level of individual postholes to the mapping of numerous square kilometres. The design and development cycle for complex systems is full of uncertainty, commonly recognized as the main source of risk in organizations engaged in design and development. One of the challenges for such organizations is assessing how much risk (cost, schedule, scope) they can take on and still remain competitive. The risk associated with the design of complex systems is fundamentally tied to uncertainty, which may lead to suboptimal performance or failure if unmanaged. By understanding the sources of uncertainty in all stages of complex system design, decision-makers can make more informed

Abstract The purpose of this work is to investigate the relationship between the disciplinary diversity of capstone design teams and perceptions of success and engineering design abilities. Capstone design programs are effective environments for students to collaborate with industry sponsors on authentic design problems. They provide students with the opportunity to hone their technical and professional skills, often in teams. Previous work has demonstrated that interdisciplinary teams outperform within-discipline teams on complex open-ended tasks, but struggle to communicate across disciplina

Abstract In today’s complex environment, it is not only important to handle/control digital manufacturing tools, but also essential to capture tacit knowledge from people. Creating a digital twin, it is an extensive effort including different fields and subjects. For example, creating a physical prototype and connecting it with a virtual prototype. From this, two questions arise. What will be the framework used to create the digital twin and what method will be used to capture the experiences to develop Next Generation Automation System (NGAS). This article discusses the current state of neurointerface technologies, not limited to deep electrode approaches. There are new heuristic ideas for creating a fast and broadband channel from the brain to artificial intelligence. One of the ideas is not to decipher the natural codes of nerve cells, but to create conditions for the development of a new language for communication between the human brain and artificial intelligence tools. Theoretically, this is possible if the brain "feels" that by changing the activity of nerve cells that communicate with the computer, it is possible to "achieve

As scientists, we aim to generate new knowledge and insights about the world around us. We often measure the impacts of our research by how many times our colleagues reference our work, an indicator that our research has contributed something new and important to our field of study. But how does our research contribute to solving the complex societal and environmental challenges facing our communities and our planet? The goal of this guidebook is to illuminate the path toward greater societal impact, with a particular focus on this work within the natural and physical sciences. We were inspire

In additive construction, ambitious goals to fabricate a concrete building in less than 24 hours are attempted. In the field, this goal relies on a metric of print time to make this conclusion, which excludes rest time and delays. The task to complete a building in 24 hours was put to the test with the first attempt at a fully continuous print of a structurally reinforced additively constructed concrete (ACC) building. A time series analysis was performed during the construction of a 512 ft2 (16’x32’x9.25’) building to explore the effect of delays on the completion time. This analysis included
