Abstract:
Chemical engineers are natural systems-thinkers; this is a skill that allows us to analyze highly complex processes that involve heterogeneous components, phenomena, and scales. Systems-thinking skills are fostered in the chemical engineering curriculum via integrative and project-based courses, such as process/product design and laboratories. However, existing curricula tends to focus scope to product/process boundaries, offering limited opportunities to capture connections to behavior occurring at small scales (e.g., atomistic and molecular) and at large scales (e.g., supply chains, policy

Orphaned or abandoned sulphide tailing disposal sites pose significant environmental hazards, including eolian dispersion, water erosion, acid mine drainage, and heavy metal mobility. Phytostabilization, an eco-friendly strategy, entails the use of alkaline amendments alongside non-native plant species capable of thriving in environments with high concentrations of heavy metals. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to assess the effect of a commercial cement which contained 46.3% sand, applied alone or combined with three magnesium (Mg) reagents on the shoot dry yield (DMY) of ryegrass (Loliu

Abstract Tremendous attention has been devoted to understanding the behavior of common engineering alloys in high temperature hydrogen service. Nelson curves from API RP 9411 are available for the alloys most widely used in HTHA service. However, the aging international fleet of equipment in hydrogen service, across the refining, petrochemical and fertilizer industries means that in-service equipment constructed from less-common alloys must sometimes be evaluated for HTHA. The authors are involved with an 10-year joint industry project studying HTHA. One major outcome of this project is a volu

Abstract Phosphorus is an essential plant nutrient and therefore integral component of many fertilizers. Due to the exploitation of natural resources, a shortage is previsible for the near future and new resources have to be found. Sewage sludge – a virtually infinitely available raw material – offers high contents of phosphates, but is also heavily contaminated by organic and inorganic pollutants. A newly developed process allows the complete removal of those substances, especially the heavy metal content, by the use of highly chlorine-containing atmospheres at temperatures of up to 1000°C. H

It covers converting various raw materials (about 10 of them), the most important ones being organic in nature such as oil, natural gas and coal whilst others are inorganic in nature such as ores / elements taken from the earth (phosphates, sulfur, potash etc), air (nitrogen, oxygen) and water (chlorine, hydrogen). The results of studies of organic mineral fertilizer "Salt of the Earth" (grade A) on potato productivity and quality are presented. The fertilizer contains the main elements of nutrition (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), iron, amino acids and humic acids. The highest efficiency was obtained when using fertilizer at a dose of 1.5 l/ha. At the same time, the increase in potato yield was 19.3 %.

This research report investigates the practice of stubble burning in Munshiganj, Bangladesh, examining its causes, impacts, and potential alternatives. Although stubble burning is a traditional practice, it remains a prevalent method used by farmers for land fertility, potash supplementation, insect control, and cost management. However, this practice contributes to air and environmental pollution and poses public health risks, particularly for children. The report presents alternative uses for stubble, such as organic fertilizer and cooking fuel, and proposes policy measures to regulate the p

A major goal in Israeli and U.S. agroecosystems is to maximize nitrogen availability to crops while minimizing nitrogen losses to air and water resources. This goal has presented a significant challenge to global agronomists and scientists because crops require large inputs of nitrogen (N) fertilizer to maximize yield, but N fertilizers are easily lost to surrounding ecosystems where they contribute to water pollution and greenhouse gas concentrations. Determination of the optimum N fertilizer input is complex because the amount of N produced from soil organic matter varies with time, space an

Iron is the fourth most abundant element in the soil, but since it forms insoluble hydroxides at neutral and basic pH, it often falls short of meeting the basic requirements of plants and microorganisms. Most aerobic and facultative aerobic microorganisms possess a high-affinity Fe transport system in which siderophores are excreted and the consequent Fe complex is taken up via a cognate specific receptor and a transport pathway. The role of the siderophore in Fe uptake by plants and microorganisms was the focus of this study. In this research Rhizopus arrhizus was found to produce a novel sid

The underlying similarity between soils, grains, fertilizers, concentrated animal feed, pellets, and mixtures is that they are all granular materials used in agriculture. Modeling such materials is a complex process due to the spatial variability of such media, the origin of the material (natural or biological), the nonlinearity of these materials, the contact phenomenon and flow that occur at the interface zone and between these granular materials, as well as the dynamic effect of the interaction process. The lack of a tool for studying such materials has limited the understanding of the phen
