Cette recherche a pour objectif de modéliser la complexité des projets pour mieux la maîtriser et, ce faisant, mieux les piloter. Elle s’inscrit ainsi dans une perspective managériale de conduite des projets et d’amélioration de leurs performances. Elle est née de constats convergents sur les limites (théoriques et pratiques) du management de projet dans le contexte contemporain. Elle vise plus particulièrement à réintégrer dans ce pilotage les dynamiques sociales constitutives du projet. Avec elles, c’est donc l’irréductible complexité des systèmes sociaux et des activités concrètes qui s’y déploient ou qu’ils servent qui est réintroduite, permettant alors une autre lecture des problèmes et de leur résolution possible. Plutôt que d’en nier l’existence, la variété ou la variabilité, ces dynamiques sociales sont réintroduites dès les phases amont du projet. Cette réintégration dans une approche systémique du projet est soutenue par une approche méthodologique apte à saisir ces dynamiques et à prendre en compte leurs évolutions. On en escompte des possibilités de simulation, donc de travail sur la base de projections dans des futurs possibles plus à même de servir la conduite du projet et sa réussite<br>This research is intended to model project complexity, in an effort to better control its occurrence and, subsequently, improve how complexity is handled. This work addresses a dual management objective of project oversight and performance enhancement; it has been formulated from a series of convergent observations on the limitations (both theoretical and practical) of project management within contemporary settings. The research conducted focuses on reinserting into this management context the social dynamics central to project design. With such dynamics, the inherent complexity of social systems, along with the practical activities implemented or engendered by these systems, gets added back in, thus providing another perspective on the problems raised and their eventual resolution. Rather than denying their existence, variations or variability, social dynamics are reintroduced as of the project's early planning stages. This reintegration step played out in a systemic project approach is bolstered by a methodological approach capable of tracking dynamics and incorporating their evolution. Simulation possibilities also enter into play, offering perspective based on future scenario projections that benefit project management and the chances of project success

Cette thèse étudie les mécanismes qui entrent en action dans le développement du pouvoir d’agir des individus en situation de vulnérabilité. À cette fin, nous nous appuyons d’une part sur des travaux en sociologie, philosophie, linguistique, et d’autre part sur notre expérience professionnelle dans le domaine du socio-éducatif (expérience retransmise et analysée ici via un récit d’investigation professionnelle), qui nous a permis de recueillir le témoignage de praticiens et de patients. L’auteure a ainsi procédé à douze échanges conversationnels avec des personnes en situation de handicap et de précarité. Ces entretiens sont retranscrits en annexe dans le tome II de cette thèse, tandis que le tome I procède à leur analyse avec les outils de la recherche biographique (socianalyse issue de l’analyse institutionnelle, étude via les catégories de Walter R. Heinz : des grilles d’analyses adaptées par Christine Delory-Momberger). Nous montrons aussi comment un tiers-lieu, un groupe d’échanges de pratiques, a été utilisé pour « déplier la complexité », au sens d’Edgar Morin, de l’approche biographique et de la question de l’implication du chercheur. Les intrications entre pouvoir d’agir et reconnaissance se retrouvent incarnées,au sein de cette recherche, par l’ensemble des personnes dont nous analysons les entretiens. À cette occasion, nous revisitons notamment les réflexions de Blaise Pascal,Hegel, Hannah Arendt, et les travaux de Paul Ricoeur, d’Axel Honneth et d’Emmanuel Renault. Cette démarche théorique s’est doublée de deux interactions concrètes avec la caisse primaire d’assurance maladie et avec un foyer d’accueil de personnes handicapées : nous illustrons comment, via la jonction de nos considérations universitaires et de notre sensibilité de praticienne dans le social, nous avons pu amener ces deux institutions à modifier leur approche, leur regard<br>This PhD thesis studies the mechanisms which play a role in the development of the empowerment of people in a vulnerable situation. To this end, we base our approach on previous works in sociology, philosophy, linguistics, and also on our professional experiences in the socio-educative area which allowed us to collect testimonies of social workers and their patients.The author thus proceeded to twelve conversational exchanges with people with disabilities or in situations of precariousness. These exchanges are transcribed into an annex, which constitutes the second volume of this thesis, while the first volume provides their analysis via biographical research tools (socianalysis stemming from institutional analysis, analysis via Walter R. Heinz's categories : an analysis framework adapted by Christine Delory-Momberger). What is more, our experience is summarized and analyzed here via a professional investigation narrative account. We also show how a « Third Place » (a group of exchanges of practices) was used in order to, to quote Edgar Morin, « unfold the complexity » of the biographical approach and of the issue of the researcher’s implication.The entanglements between empowerment and social recognition are here embodied, in this research, by each person we interviewed. On this occasion, we revisit in particular some thoughts by Blaise Pascal, Hegel, Hannah Arendt, and the works of Paul Ricoeur, Axel Honneth, and Emmanuel Renault. This theoretical approach is accompanied by two concrete interactions with the CPAM (the main institution of the French Health System) and a group home for people with disabilities : We illustrate how, via the junction of our university point of view and our sensibility as a social worker, we have been able to convince these two institutions to adapt their approach and their perspectives

L’île de Mayotte se trouve au carrefour d’influences bantoues, arabes, malgache et désormais française. Cette petite île musulmane va devenir le 101ème département français, et se retrouve ainsi projetée dans un développement économique et social effréné créant des contradictions avec ses valeurs traditionnelles. C’est dans ce contexte qu’évoluent simultanément plusieurs rites de possession, qui présentent une grande variété d’entités différemment organisées entre elles. Cette étude tente de dérouler tous les mécanismes et les implications de ces rites de possession aussi bien à l’échelle de la vie intime des individus, qu’au niveau territoriale et politique, en passant par la gestion sociale de cette communauté aux origines multiples et tourmentées. Cette diversité dans le nombre de rites et dans le nombre d’entités permet aux rites de possession d’être un outil très malléable dans la gestion des interactions personnelles, ainsi qu’un support privilégié pour le traitement de la mémoire des origines migratoires de la population et des événements historiques passés. Au travers des rites de possession la mémoire individuelle comme collective, trouve également sa possible réutilisation et une réinterprétation adéquate à son investissement dans la vie politique mahoraise actuelle, face aux nouveaux enjeux des bouleversements culturels. This little Muslim island will become the 101st French department, and then will be cast in a frantic economic and social development creating contradictions in its traditional values. In this context, several possession rituals evolve and present a great variety of spirits which are differently organised. This study tries to uncoil all the mechanisms and the implications of those possession rituals, at an intimate level as well as at a territorial and political level, passing through social management of this community which has multiple and tormented origins. This diversity in the number of rituals and the number of spirits allows the possession rituals to be a very malleable tool for the management of personal interactions, and a privileged medium for the treatment of the memory of the migratory origins of the population and passed historical events. Through the possession rituals, an individual and collective memory also finds its possible reusing and appropriate reinterpretation for its investment in the actual political life of Mayotte, facing new stakes of cultural disruptions. The possession rituals are less the final object of this study than an open window on the actual society of Mayotte and its reactivity

Les difficultés que rencontre la théorie politique pour donner un fondement général à l'ordre démocratique la conduisent , dans ses traditions les plus influentes, à une exigence plus ou moins explicite d'homogénéité sociale. Or, l'importance des enjeux minoritaires risque de retirer à cette exigence toute pertinence. L'analyse détaillée des mobilisations ethniques minoritaires britanniques et de leur prise en compte politique met en évidence leur interdépendance, ainsi que la relation étroite entre les dimensions analytique et programmatique de leur compréhension sociologique. Cela montre la dimension politique des processus de construction identitaire, et l'indétermination de ceux-ci dans un environnement structurellement complexe, caractérisé par la dématérialisation et la réflexivité accrue de la conscience sociale. La nécessité théorique d'incorporer ces facteurs impose de renoncer aussi bien à la logique traditionnelle de l'homogénéité qu'a la célébration nouvelle de l'hétérogénéité. Ceci conduit à dépasser le fondement de l'ordre démocratique comme processus abstrait pour aller vers une conception politique de la gestion de la diversité. Incontournable et menaçante à la fois, l'hétérogénéité requiert moins la subtilité théorique que la prudence pratique<br>The difficulties encountered by political theory in providing a general foundation for democratic order lead its mainstream tradition to a more or less explicit requirement of social homogeneity that minority issues risk making irrelevant. Detailed analysis of British ethnic minority mobilization and of its politicization shows their interdependence and the close relation between the analytical and programmatic dimensions of their sociological understanding. This underlines the political content of identity processes and their indeterminate nature in a structurally complex environment characterized by dematerialization and enhanced reflexiveness of social consciousness. The theoretical necessity to take account of these factors means abandoning both the traditional logic of homogeneity and the new celebration of heterogeneity. This leads beyond the abstract foundation of democratic order towards a political conception of the management of diversity. At once inescapable and threatening, heterogeneity requires not so much theoretical subtlety as practical prudence

L'objectif principal de cette thèse était de montrer que les individus victimes d'un stéréotype négatif et stigmatisés socialement, mettent en place des stratégies du rétablissement de l'identité positive adaptées aux contextes menaçants. En particulier, il s'agissait de repérer les manifestations de ces stratégies dans le domaine des performances où l'on a surtout constaté que la "menace par le stéréotype", manipulée par la diagnosticité de la tâche ou par la visibilité sociale (Steele &amp; Aronson, 1995 ; Shih &amp; al. , 1999) conduit à une baisse des performances. Selon nous, ces deux situations -diagnosticité et visibilité sociale- ne provoquant pas une même menace identitaire, ne conduisent pas à la même statégie du rétablissement de l'identité positive. A l'aide de plusieurs types d'indicateurs reflétant différents niveaux d'expression du rétablissement de l'identité : performances, niveau comportemental (investissement dans une dimension ou une alternative), et cognitif (attributions auto-handicapantes, de discrimination, recherche de feed-back, évaluation des performances), nous avons montré que dans une situation qui rend saillant une menace de l'identité personnelle (diagnosticité de la tâche), les étudiants d'origine sociale défavorisée mettent en place une stratégie de mobilité, alors que dans la situation qui rend saillante une menace de l'identité sociale (visibilité sociale), ils mettent en place une stratégie de créativité. Enfin, la situation doublement menaçante (diagnosticité de la tâche et visibilité) parce qu'elle rend saillantes à la fois l'identité personnelle et sociale, favorise un désengagement protecteur (Crocker &amp; Major, 1989). (. . . )<br>This dissertation focuses on how stigmatized people selectively react to identity-threatening social contexts. More specifically, we attempted to identify the expressions of these strategies that people used in response to such threats in the domain of performance, in which "stereotype threat", manipulated by the task diagnosticity or by the visibility of the target's membership, is known to produce performance decrements (Steele &amp; Aronson, 1995). We hypothesized that task diagnosticity and social visibility do not threat stigmatised people in the same way and hence do not induce identical strategy in response to threat. Because task diagnosticity makes personal identity threat salient, we think that stigmatised people will use a mobility strategy. When social identity is salient (because of the visibility of the group membership), we think that they'll use a creativity strategy. Additionally, when both types of threat are salient (personal and identity threat), they'll disengage from the situation (Crocker &amp; Major, 1898). (. . . )

Ce travail confronte les discours patronaux et syndicaux en matière de Sécurité sociale émis durant lesTrente glorieuses. -Pourquoi le discours, et non les diverses techniques préconisées pour assurer l'équilibre dusystème? Pour se pencher sur les principes, les idées, les raisonnements et éventuellement la doctrine desintervenants étudiés -Pourquoi la Sécurité sociale? Parce qu'il s'agit d'une forme concrète de progrès social (ou, du moins, parce qu'elle est usuellement considérée comme telle), et qu'à son évocation, les intervenants décrivent -fût-ce implicitement- la façon dont ils conçoivent la société. -Pourquoi le discours patronal ? Pour connaître le point de vue d'opposants à cette incarnation du progrès social (en effet, dès son instauration, les représentants patronaux sesont montrés réticents à son encontre, allant parfois jusqu'à lui dénier tout caractère progressiste). -Pourquoi lediscours syndical ? Parce qu'il s'agit du principal discours dont la réfutation constitue la base de la rhétoriquepatronale-Pourquoi lesTrentes Glorieuses? Parce que cette période de croissance économique -qui n'était pas proprela France- est souvent présentée dans la presse généraliste comme l'âged'or" de la Sécurité sociale, et pour que cene soit donc pas l'évocation de faits circonstanciels (dont la mondialisation de l'économie représente de nos jours une parfaite illustration) qui constitue l'unique justification des critiques adressées au système. La complexitéinstitutionnelle (adjonction de différents secteurs) et linguistique (complexité des rapports signifiant-signifié : la formule " je défends la Sécurité sociale " n'a pas les mêmes implications en fonction de celui qui l'exprime) de la Sécurité sociale a imposé de reformuler les interrogations de départ, de diversifier les intervenants étudiés et d'appliquer certaines méthodologies linguistiques aux discours analysés.

La complexité qui traverse l'épidémiologie sociale et la médecine légale du vivant est de celle que l'on cherche à saisir par la variété des observations et par l'intrication de points de vue et d'échelles différentes - l'individu, le groupe, la société. Les méthodes du biomédical sont encore peu adaptées au traitement de la complexité, à sa représentation qui ne soit pas normative, statistique. Il existe un ensemble d'approches non statistiques, " non classiques ", qui puissent traiter simultanément un grand nombre de dimensions et qui permettent de réduire la complexité apparente en dégageant des objets d'étude spécifique. Nous présentons ici les principes et l'utilisation des techniques de reconnaissance de forme dans le cadre de l'épidémiologie sociale, en les appliquant à la recherche d'une typologie de recours aux soins, sur la base des données de la cohorte SIRS. Nous expliquons en quoi ces approches ont leur place, épistémologiquement et techniquement parlant, aux côtés des méthodes expérimentales classiques type essais randomisés contrôlés. Nous exposons également un autre moyen de réduire la complexité des données, tout en en préservant les qualités topologiques. Nous introduisons en médecine légale la notion de dimension intrinsèque, plus petite dimension nécessaire et suffisante à la description des données, et de techniques non linéaires de réduction de la dimension. Nous en appliquons les principes au cas de l'intégration de sources d'information multiples pour l'estimation de l'âge chez les adolescents migrants. Enfin, nous discutons les avantages et limites de ces approches ainsi que les perspectives qu'elles ouvrent à ces deux disciplines complémentaires<br>Social epidemiology and clinical legal medicine are hybrid objects that articulate several fields, accounting for social and interpersonal relationships. The complexity that characterizes them both is investigated through different viewpoints, scales and dimensions: the individual scale, the group scale and the society scale. The techniques used in biomedicine are not designed to properly deal with such a complexity, in a non-normative way. A wide range of alternative non-statistical, “non-classical” methods exist that can process simultaneously various dimensions so that we can reduce the apparent complexity of data while discovering scientific objects. Here, we present the principles and the use of clustering techniques, applied to social epidemiology. We applied different clustering techniques on data from the SIRS cohort to build a typology of healthcare utilization in the Paris metropolitan area. From an epistemological and technical viewpoint, we explain why these methods should take place beside other recognized but limited techniques such as randomized controlled trials. We introduce another but complementary kind of complexity reduction technique. The concept of intrinsic dimension is explained – the littlest dimension needed to describe properly data – and nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques are applied in clinical legal medicine. With these tools, we explore whether the integration of multiple information sources is relevant in age estimation of living migrants. Finally, we discuss the pros and cons of these methods, as well as the opportunities they may create for both fields of social epidemiology and clinical legal medicine

Le Gravettien (34-24 ka) est largement considéré comme le dernier technocomplexe paneuropéen avant la fragmentation régionale de la population à la suite du dernier maxima glaciaire. Il a été démontré que les ornements personnels sont de puissants indicateurs du statut social et de l'appartenance culturelle. Jusqu'à présent, les ornements personnels omniprésents dans les sites d'occupation et de sépulture caractérisant le Gravettien n'ont pas encore fait l'objet d'une étude approfondie. L'objectif principal de la thèse était de documenter la variabilité des associations de types de perles et d'identifier les mécanismes à l'origine de cette diversité à l'échelle régionale et européenne au cours du Gravettien. La réalisation de cet objectif a ouvert la voie au second objectif : l'étude de la géographie culturelle des communautés gravettiennes. Dans un premier temps, nous proposons une analyse approfondie des nombreuses parures provenant d'un site funéraire clé du Gravettien, Cro-Magnon (Dordogne, France). Ensuite, nous avons créé une base de données géoréférencée représentative des parures du Gravettien, comprenant 164 types provenant de plus de 130 sites à travers l'Europe, et nous l'avons analysée à l'aide de méthodes statistiques multivariées et spatiales, telles que l'analyse des coordonnées principales (PCoA), le Neighbour-joining, le Neighbour-net, la sériation et les corrélations et corrélogrammes de Mantel. Nous avons ensuite comparé et mis en contraste les parures du Gravettien avec celles de l'Aurignacien précédent en utilisant des analyses similaires afin d'étudier s'il existait une continuité entre ces deux technocomplexes. L'analyse des parures trouvées à Cro-Magnon a révélé l'existence de vastes réseaux d'échange à travers le continent. Malgré des similitudes avec les parures d'autres groupes voisins de Dordogne, les parures de Cro-Magnon présentent un caractère distinctif, c'est-à-dire peu, plutôt que beaucoup, de pendentifs en ivoire décorés et beaucoup, plutôt que peu, d'ornements en coquillages, ce qui souligne le désir de ce peuple d'affirmer son identité unique dans un contexte symbolique plus large. Le recalibrage de la seule date radiocarbone disponible pour ce site suggère qu'une campagne de datation plus étendue est nécessaire pour attribuer chronologiquement ce site emblématique avec précision. L'analyse de la base de données du Gravettien européenne révèle que ce technocomplexe était divisé en neuf groupes qui portaient des associations de types de perles différentes, organisées d'ouest en est. Alors que les groupes gravettiens de l'est de l'Europe 10 portaient des parures principalement en ivoire, en pierre et en dents de mammifères carnivores, les groupes de l'ouest avaient tendance à porter des perles fabriquées à partir de coquillages marins et de dents de mammifères herbivores. Il a été démontré que les différences observées dans les associations de types de perles n'étaient pas uniquement dues à l'isolement par la distance. Nous en avons conclu qu'un sentiment d'appartenance culturelle dictait les types de parures portés par les différents groupes de Gravettiens. Les sites d'inhumation et d'occupation se caractérisent par des schémas distincts d'associations de parures. La différence observée entre les groupes d'inhumation était plus importante que la différence entre les groupes d'occupation. La comparaison des parures du Gravettien et de l'Aurignacien a révélé des similitudes frappantes entre les deux technocomplexes en termes de choix de parures. Le Gravettien se caractérise par des régions d'associations de parures similaires, dont la surface est plus de dix fois supérieure à celle de l'Aurignacien et qui sont plus interconnectées que ces dernières. Les types de parures entièrement sculptés dans des matériaux osseux et lithiques marquent mieux le fossé culturel entre ces deux technocomplexes que ceux produits à partir de formes naturelles minimalement modifiées<br>The Gravettian (34–24 ka) is widely considered as the final Pan-European technocomplex before the regional fragmentation of the population following the Last Glacial Maxima. Personal ornaments have been shown to be powerful indicators of social status and cultural affiliation. Hitherto, the ubiquitous personal ornaments found in occupation and burial sites characterising the Gravettian have yet to be the subject of a comprehensive study. The primary aim of the PhD was to document the variability in bead-type associations and identify the mechanisms driving this diversity at both regional and European scales during the Gravettian period. Achieving this paved the way for the second aim: investigating the cultural geography of Gravettian communities. We first provide an in-depth analysis of the numerous personal ornaments coming from a key Gravettian funerary site, Cro-Magnon (Dordogne, France). Subsequently, we created a representative georeferenced bead database of Gravettian personal ornaments encompassing 164 types coming from over 130 sites across Europe and analyse it using multivariate and spatial statistical methods, such as principal coordinates analysis (PCoA), Neighbour-joining, Neighbour-net, seriation and Mantel correlations and correlograms. We then proceeded to compare and contrast the Gravettian personal ornaments with those coming from the preceding Aurignacian using similar analyses in addition to k-means clustering, perMANOVA and Archaeological Similarity Networks to investigate whether continuity existed between these two technocomplexes. Analysis of the personal ornaments found at Cro-Magnon revealed the existence of extensive exchange networks across the continent. Despite sharing similarities with ornaments from other nearby groups in Dordogne, the Cro-Magnon ornaments exhibit a distinctiveness, i.e., a small, rather than large, number of decorated ivory pendants and a large, rather than small, number of shell ornaments, that highlights this people’s desire to assert their unique identity within a broader symbolic context. The recalibration of the only available radiocarbon date for this site suggests that a more extensive dating campaign is necessary to chronologically attribute this iconic site accurately. The analysis of the European-scale Gravettian database reveals that this technocomplex was split into nine groups who wore different bead-type associations which were organized in an east-west cline across Europe. Whereas Gravettian groups from the east of Europe wore personal ornaments predominantly fashioned from ivory, stone and mammal carnivore teeth, groups from the west tended to wear beads made from 8 marine shells and mammal herbivore teeth. The observed differences in bead-type associations were shown to not be solely due to Isolation-by-Distance. From this we concluded that a sense of cultural belonging dictated the personal ornament types different groups of Gravettian people wore. Burial and occupation sites were characterised by distinct patterns of personal ornament associations. The observed difference between burial groups was higher than the difference between occupation groups. The comparison of the Gravettian and Aurignacian databases unveiled stark similarities in terms of personal ornament choices between the two technocomplexes. The Gravettian was characterised by regions of similar personal ornament associations which had over ten times the surface area and which were more interconnected than those of the Aurignacian. Personal ornaments types fully carved out of osseous and lithic material better marked the cultural divide between these two technocomplexes than those produced from minimally modified natural forms

Cette thèse en stratégie vise à comprendre comment les organisations pluralistes, qui combinent une pluralité de logiques d’action, peuvent conduire la transformation délibérée de leurs doctrines. Elle développe une approche originale du travail politico-stratégique dans les organisations pluralistes, approche qui s’appuie sur les théories pragmatistes de la rationalité et des institutions. Les résultats qu’elle présente sont issus d’une recherche de terrain (ethnographie et intervention) réalisée au sein d’une grande mutuelle d’assurance française, la Macif, qui est un acteur référent dans le champ de l’économie sociale. Le premier volet de la recherche a permis d’identifier et d’analyser les obstacles que rencontrent les organisations pluralistes lorsqu’elles cherchent à transformer leurs doctrines. Le second volet a permis de conceptualiser et d’expérimenter les modalités sous lesquelles elles peuvent parvenir à opérer la transformation souhaitée. La thèse présente pour finir un certain nombre de propositions visant à guider l’élaboration de la stratégie des organisations pluralistes<br>This doctoral research aims at understanding how pluralistic organizations that combine multiple institutional logics can engage in their deliberate transformation. It draws on pragmatist theories of rationality and of institutions to develop a novel perspective on strategy practices and processes in pluralistic organizations. Its results rely on fieldwork (ethnography and research-action) conducted within a French mutual insurance company, Macif, which is a key actor in the field of social economy. Firstly, this research identifies and analyzes the major obstacles that prevent pluralistic organizations from conducting such a transformation. Secondly, it conceptualizes and experiments ways to do so. Finally, this research suggests some methods for strategizing and organizing in pluralistic contexts

La mobilité, en particulier la mobilité urbaine est aujourd’hui un thème d’une grande actualité politique et scientifique, qui soulève des questions et engage des démarches qui vont bien au-delà des problématiques habituelles des transports (Bonnet, Desjeux, 2000, p.201). Au centre de la vie quotidienne, économique et/ou sociale des acteurs locaux, la mobilité est un problème aux multiples enjeux : impact sur le réchauffement climatique, droit à la mobilité, économie, urbanisme et cadre de vie, équilibre entre ville et campagne, sécurité routière et santé publique. Le besoin de mobilité peut être traité, voire satisfait, de plusieurs façons, soit en apportant une réponse au besoin de déplacement soit en apportant une réponse au mode de mobilité. La question de la mobilité est un des enjeux majeurs pour l'accès aux emplois comme aux services dans les territoires et lorsque celle-ci se heurte au manque de transports collectifs, publics et privés, ce manque entraîne l'isolement voire l’exclusion, surtout pour les populations les plus fragiles avec pour corollaire la saturation des infrastructures routières par le recours à l’utilisation intensive des véhicules individuels dans les zones péri-urbaines. Ainsi, le secteur des transports a besoin d’utiliser les technologies de l’information. Ces technologies de l’information (TI) sont au centre de nombreuses réflexions sur la mobilité et la non mobilité, en particulier dans le cadre de la réduction des déplacements physiques rendus nécessaire par la maitrise des émissions de gaz à effet de serre. Les technologies de l’information en hybridant les territoires, peuvent être des outils d’une gestion globale et durable des déplacements territoriaux. Dans cette recherche, nous avons mis l’accent sur le croisement de l’« Intelligence Territoriale et mobilité durable » avec une orientation sur le déplacement partagé, biens et personnes, facteur de communication sociale, et de développement d’équilibre territorial en menant en parallèle une double étude entre l’Afrique de l’Est (la CAE) et l’Euro Méditerranée (PACA et Corse), pour en tirer des enseignements. For local stakeholders mobility is a matter of life and at the crossroads of their daily economic and social life, mobility is an issue with multiple challenges: impact on global warming, rights to mobility, economy development, jobs accessibility, town planning and environment, road safety and public health. The need for mobility can be addressed or even satisfied by several ways, either by responding to the need for mobility, or by providing a response to the mode of mobility. Thus, the transportation sector needs using information technology. These information technologies are studied through numerous ways on mobility and non-mobility, particularly focusing on how reducing physical displacements made necessary and call for the control of greenhouse gas emissions. Information technologies by hybridizing territories, as described within Territorial Intelligence assumptions, can be tools for a comprehensive and sustainable management of territorial displacements

Cette thèse propose un test empirique du modèle d’attribution du leadership basé sur l’observation de dyades leader-subordonné au Sénégal et en France. Ce modèle se concentre sur des construits essentiels comme la complexité attributionnelle et l’exactitude des attributions des leaders, les comportements qui en résultent, les variables médiatrices comme la satisfaction des subordonnés, les stratégies correctives de la performance et les variables de résultat comme les perceptions du leadership. Le modèle est testé à l’aide de régressions hiérarchiques des effets directs et des effets médiateurs des attributions biaisées. Notre intention est de tester les relations à partir d’un échantillon d’auditeurs en formation continue de l’enseignement supérieur (au Sénégal et en France) et de déterminer selon notre modèle et nos hypothèses de recherche, quels construits contribuent le plus à expliquer la complexité attributionnelle des leaders. Cequi nous amène à étudier l’influence directe de l’exactitude des attributions, l’effet des stratégies correctives et de la satisfaction des subordonnés sur la perception du leadership. Nous testerons aussi le rôle des attributions biaisées sur les deux variables médiatrices. Les hypothèses sont fortement corroborées. La complexité attributionnelle des leaders est liée à l’exactitude de leurs attributions, telle qu’elle est perçue par leurs subordonnés. Les stratégies de correction de la performance élaborées par les leaders se sont révélées liées à des attributions exactes, puis à des variables clés de résultats. Nous analysons les résultats ainsi que les limites et les orientations futures de la recherche. Les contributionsmanagériales sont doubles : d'une part, de prendre en compte dans le processus de recrutement des leaders leur aptitude à adopter une approche attributionnelle complexe et, d'autre part, les former afin de mieux accompagner leurs subordonnés<br>This thesis proposes an empirical test of the leadership attribution model based on the observation of leader-subordinate dyads in Senegal and France. This model focuses on key constructs such as attributional complexity and leader attribution accuracy, resulting behaviors, mediating variables such as subordinate satisfaction, performance corrective strategies, and outcome variables such as leadership perceptions. The model is tested using hierarchical regressions of direct effects and mediating effects of biased allocations. Our intention is to test the relationships from a sample of auditors in continuingeducation of higher education (in Senegal and France) and to determine according to our model and our research hypotheses, which constructs contribute the most to explain the attributional complexity of the leaders. This leads us to study the direct influence of the accuracy of the attributions, the effect of the corrective strategies and the satisfaction of the subordinates on the perception of the leadership. We will also test the role of biased assignments on the two mediating variables. Hypotheses are strongly corroborated. The attributional complexity of leaders is linked to the accuracy of their attributions, as perceived by their subordinates. The performance correction strategies developed by leaders have beenlinked to accurate attribution and then to key outcome variables. We analyze the results as well as the limits and future directions of the research. The managerial contributions are twofold: on the one hand, to take into account in the process of recruiting leaders their ability to adopt a complex attributional approach and, on the other hand, to train them to better support their subordinates

La mobilité, en particulier la mobilité urbaine est aujourd’hui un thème d’une grande actualité politique et scientifique, qui soulève des questions et engage des démarches qui vont bien au-delà des problématiques habituelles des transports (Bonnet, Desjeux, 2000, p.201). Le besoin de mobilité peut être traité, voire satisfait, de plusieurs façons, soit en apportant une réponse au besoin de déplacement soit en apportant une réponse au mode de mobilité. Cette recherche en théorie sociale trouve sa source dans un problème classique livré notamment par la pensée de Hobbes, celui de la possibilité de l’ordre social – l’ordre social étant ici conçu comme une situation sociale où les membres d’un groupe parviennent à vivre ensemble de manière relativement pacifique. Elle se penche, plus précisément, sur des théories qui, bien qu’issues de traditions de pensée très différentes, proposent une même formulation critique et restrictive de ce problème : ces théories infirment l’idée que cet ordre (ou du moins toute situation d’ordre social) pourrait être produit de manière intentionnelle et invitent ainsi à envisager des mécanismes de production non intentionnelle de ce dernier. Cette enquête ne prétend nullement réaliser un panorama exhaustif des différentes pensées ou théories qui ont pu défendre cette hypothèse de l’ordre spontané. Elle s’attache avant tout, en s’appuyant sur les théories de B. Spinoza, B. Pascal, A. Smith, É. Durkheim, F. A. von Hayek et N. Luhmann, à établir les termes d’un débat au sein de cette perspective. Elle dégage pour ce faire les prémisses théoriques qui, chez ces auteurs, conditionnent des types spécifiques d’analyse des mécanismes d’auto-organisation. Ce travail dégage notamment deux courants adverses au sein de ces théories. Le premier, dans lequel on inclut les projets d’Hayek et de Luhmann, défend, en se fondant sur le constat d’une spécificité des sociétés modernes, l’hypothèse que leur ordre ne peut pas reposer, ou du moins pas essentiellement, sur un contrôle social exercé sur l’individu. Le second, dans lequel s’inscrivent les pensées de Durkheim, Smith, Pascal et Spinoza, met en exergue ce que nous nommons le « problème des passions », et soutient au contraire l’idée que ce contrôle constitue une condition essentielle de cet ordre. Tandis que le premier courant insiste sur la nature cognitive des mécanismes de production non intentionnelle d’ordre, le second souligne leur dimension affective<br>The starting point of this investigation in social theory is the observation of strong affinities that very different and somehow rival theories have with each other. These theories investigate the problem of social order, namely « how is it possible for human beings to live with each other in a relative peaceful situation? ». Furthermore, they all maintain that this order cannot emerge but unintentionally. The present research aims at setting the terms of a debate among these approaches and focuses in this respect on the theories of Baruch Spinoza, Blaise Pascal, Adam Smith, Émile Durkheim, Friedrich August von Hayek and Niklas Luhmann. Their respective approaches to self-organizing mechanisms rest on correspondingly various theoretical assumptions. Our purpose is to point out these assumptions. For instance, Hayek and Luhmann’s theories on the one hand and those of Spinoza, Pascal, Smith and Durkheim on the other strongly differ regarding their conception of the conditions of social order: while the former, on account of the specificities of modern societies, assume that their social order cannot essentially rest on a social control, the latter argue that passions, by misleading human beings, make this social control an essential condition of peaceful living together

Le développement de l'intercommunalité donne lieu à des recompositions territoriales et gouvernementales majeures. Les élus se confrontent alors à l'exercice complexe de la coopération et à la définition d'un projet territorial. Il s'agira d'étudier la coopération intercommunale au regard des apprentissages (techniques, politiques et territoriaux) opérés par les maires. Ce propos est illustré par l'étude de l'agglomération toulousaine qui, fragmentée en trois communautés d'agglomérations ou urbaine, donne à voir des territoires plus ou moins avancés dans le mouvement d'intégration communautaire. A cette occasion, plus de 80 maires, ainsi que des responsables techniques, ont été interrogés.

L’Afrique subsaharienne se présente, involontairement, comme une région en proie à une succession de crises, de conflits, de guerres civiles. Ces externalités négatives de l’instabilité socio-politique s’appréhendent, souvent, par le truchement du rite jaculatoire causal. D’où, les vocables « ethnies », « identité » – lorsqu’il n’est pas question de sous-développement, ou de l’injection du déficit démocratique –, auprès des commentateurs, sont, de façon cursive, convoqués pour expliquer le désordre perçu. Ainsi, les événements de 1994 au Rwanda sont ramenés à un conflit – « ethnique » – Hutu/Tutsi; négligeant par voie de conséquence l’acuité de la complexité de la réalité, ou à défaut, celle de la convergence de variables. Et pourtant, en descendant dans cette profondeur cognitive, tout observateur constaterait que l’instabilité socio-politique en Afrique subsaharienne reste une construction dans le temps et dans l’espace, optimisée par l’impénitent désir de pouvoir des acteurs politiques. Les structures historiques, loin d’être de véritables déterminants, participent à la construction sociale de la réalité porteuse d’idées, de règles et de pratiques représentationnelles qui érigent la nécessaire grammaire du bouleversement social. Nos présents travaux, non seulement, viennent examiner les causes habituellement avancées, mais s’opposent également aux arguments culturalistes mobilisés pour l’explication ou la compréhension de l’instabilité socio-politique en Afrique subsaharienne. C’est pourquoi, nous retenons que la justesse scientifique afférente à la compréhension du mouvement mécanistique socio-politique en Afrique subsaharienne est fonction du mode de connaissance de la réalité perçue. Par conséquent, nous estimons que l’instabilité socio-politique en Afrique subsaharienne, est un processus dynamique évolutif qui, nonobstant le désordre structurel, tend vers une stationnarité relative, puis absolue avant l’avènement de la stabilité<br>Subsaharan Africa presents itself, involuntarily, like an area in the grip of a succession of crises, conflicts, civil wars. These negative externalities of sociopolitical instability are apprehended, often, by the means of the causal ritual. That's why, the terms "ethnic group", "identity" - when it isn't question of underdevelopment, or the injection of democratic deficit - near the commentators, in a cursory mention, are convened to explain the perceived disorder. Thus, the events of 1994 in Rwanda are brought back to a "ethnic" conflict Hutu/Tutsi; negleging consequently the acuity of the complexity of reality or failing this, that of the convergence of variables. And yet, while going down in this cognitive depth, any observer would note that sociopolitical instability in subsaharan Africa remains a construction in time and space, optimized by the unrepentant desire of power of the political actors. The historical structures, far from being true determinants, take part in the social construction of reality carrying ideas, rules, and practices representational which set up the necessary grammar of the social upheaval. Our present work, not only comes to examine the usually advanced causes, but is also opposed to the culturalist arguments mobilized for the explanation or the comprehension of sociopolitical instability in subsaharan Africa. This is why, we retain that the scientific accuracy related with the comprehension of sociopolitical mechanisitc movement in subsaharan Africa is function of the mode of knowledge of perceived reality. Consequently, we estimate that sociopolitical instability in subsaharan Africa, is an evolutionary dynamic process which, notwhithstanding, the strutural disorder, strives for a relative stationnarity, then absolute before the advent of stability

The characteristic traits of the Neolithic developed independently of each other during a very long time period over a broad region in China. Pottery appeared as early as ca. 19.000 cal. BP in late Paleolithic contexts. A shift to a semi-sedentary way of life first occurred at the onset of Holocene (ca. 11.000 cal. BP), and was associated with hunting-gathering populations. Pigs, dogs, rice and millet were domesticated by 9000-8000 cal. BP by people who primarily relied on wild plants and animals. Fully developed Neolithic sedentary farming villages were not established until ca. 7000 cal. BP in China. Agricultural economy was the foundation for emergence of hierarchical organized societies with elite groups controlling political and ritual power. Throughout the middle and late Neolithic period (7000-4000 cal. BP) numerous complex societies developed and declined across much of China’s landscape before the formation of early states in the second millennium BC.<br>Los característicos rasgos del Neolítico se desarrollaron independientemente unos de otros durante un periodo muy largo en una amplia región de China. La cerámica es tan antigua como c. 19.000 A.P., en contextos del Paleolítico Tardío. A principios del Holoceno (c. 11.000 A.P.) ocurrió un cambio hacia un modo de vida sedentario y estuvo asociado con las poblaciones de cazadores-recolectores. El cerdo, el perro, el arroz y el mijo fueron domesticados alrededor de 9000 a 8000 A.P. por gente que antes dependía, en especial, de plantas y animales silvestres. Las aldeas agrícolas del Neolítico completamente desarrolladas no se establecieron si no hasta c. 7000 A.P. La economía agrícola fue el fundamento para el surgimiento de sociedades jerárquicas organizadas en las que existían grupos de elite que controlaban el poder político y ritual. A lo largo de los periodos Neolítico Medio y Tardío (7000-4000 A.P.) numerosas sociedades complejas se desarrollaron y pasaron por procesos de decadencia en gran parte del paisaje del territorio chino antes de la formación de los Estados tempranos en el segundo milenio a.C.

The multidisciplinary approach to problem solving involves drawing appropriately from different viewpoints to redefine problems outside of normal boundaries and reach solutions based on a new understanding of complex situations. Social and economics science have always borrowed and embraced tools and instruments from mathematics and physics to develop their theories. Historically a real multidisciplinary methodology to economic and social issues has been neglected by the academic researchers due to a widespread gap in their formal approach. Recently a new interdisciplinary framework has been developed connecting together social and economics theories with the complex systems analysis; this approach reveals new conceptual prospectives and methodologies thanks to its multiple-level viewpoint, which are able to disclose novel challenges and problems. This thesis collects three different multidisciplinary approaches to social and economic behaviors formalized with the complex systems tools. Chapter 2: We introduce a statistical agent based model to describe the phenomenon of drug abuse and its dynamical evolution at the individual and global level. The agents are heterogeneous with respect to their intrinsic inclination to drugs, to their budget attitude and social environment. The various levels of drug use were inspired by the professional description of the phenomenon and this permits a direct comparison with all available data. We show that certain elements have a great importance to start the use of drugs, for example the rare events in the personal experiences which permit to overcome the barrier of drug use occasionally. The analysis of how the system reacts to perturbations is very important to understand its key elements and it provides strategies for effective policy making. The present model represents the first step of a realistic description of this phenomenon and can be easily generalized in various directions. Chapter 3: We characterize the statistical law according to which Italian primary school-size distributes. We find that the schoolsize can be approximated by a log-normal distribution, with a fat lower tail that collects a large number of very small schools. The upper tail of the school-size distribution decreases exponentially and the growth rates are distributed with a Laplace PDF. These distributions are similar to those observed for firms and are consistent with a Bose-Einstein preferential attachment process. The body of the distribution features a bimodal shape suggesting some source of heterogeneity in the school organization that we uncover by an indepth analysis of the relation between schools-size and citysize. We propose a novel cluster methodology and a new spatial interaction approach among schools which outline the variety of policies implemented in Italy. Different regional policies are also discussed shedding lights on the relation between policy and geographical features. Chapter 4: By analyzing the distribution of revenues across the production sectors of quoted firms we suggest a novel dimension that drives the firms diversification process at country level. Data show a non trivial macro regional clustering of the diversification process, which underlines the relevance of geopolitical environments in determining the microscopic dynamics of economic entities. These findings demonstrate the possibility of singling out in complex ecosystems those microfeatures that emerge at macro-levels, which could be of particular relevance for decision-makers in selecting the appropriate parameters to be acted upon in order to achieve desirable results. The understanding of this micro-macro information exchange is further deepened through the introduction of a simplified dynamic model.

Cette thèse s'inscrit dans le cadre d'une sociolinguistique interpersonnelle et s'intéresse à la construction dynamique de la personne, à travers les symbolisations verbales qu'elle produit, dans un milieu pluriculturel et plurilingue. Elle se situe à la croisée d'une science des sujets, encore à construire, et d'une socio-pragmatique, sans refuser d'emprunter à la psychologie sociale ses concepts les plus utiles. S'il nous fallait définir de manière plus précise le cadre épistémologique qui est le nôtre, nous dirions qu'il s'apparente à une sociolinguistique du conflit structurant dans les relations interpersonnelles des sujets. La parole construit l'individu ou, plutôt pourrait-on dire, que la personne se construit par la parole et dans l'altérité. Ainsi mêlons-nous ici la linguistique pragmatique à toutes les disciplines qui se sont intéressées à la construction identitaire. Par cet apport transdisciplinaire nous mettons en évidence la complexité d'une thématique incluant un sujet, lui-même complexe et indivisible intégrant la langue et la personne. Nous nous intéressons plus spécifiquement à l'usage des langues dans une situation de conflit structurant (avec l'autre, avec soi) et à celui de la médiation langagière dans ce milieu tensionnel de la personne face à un autrui déstabilisant. Notre outil privilégié dans le cadre de cette recherche se trouve être l'analyse textuelle (textes issus de la transcription d'entretiens) dont nous redéfinissons les contours et pour laquelle nous proposons un outil de compréhension. Ce travail est fait d'un va et vient constant entre théorie et pratique. Nous pensons, en effet, que ces deux mouvements s'enrichissent mutuellement. Si la connaissance de notre objet est un des objectifs de notre thèse, nous visons aussi à élaborer et tester des outils épistémologiques, méthodologiques, transférables dans d'autres situations. Nous souhaitons ainsi montrer dans cette recherche que la personne se construit de manière dynamique dans l'entre-deux du dire et de l'action, au hasard des rencontres et des identifications partielles. Ce qui fait d'elle un être toujours singulier pris dans les affects, les représentations, dans des discours aux significations multiples qui la fondent symboliquement.

Cette thèse étudie la détection de communautés dans le contexte des réseaux sociaux. Un réseau social peut être modélisé par un graphe dans lequel les sommets représentent les membres et les arêtes représentent les relations entre les membres. En particulier, j'étudie quatre différentes définitions de communauté. D'abord, une structure en communautés peut être définie par une partition des sommets telle que tout sommet a une plus grande proportion de voisins dans sa partie que dans toute autre partie. Cette définition peut être adaptée pour l'étude d'une seule communauté. Ensuite, une communauté peut être vue comme un sous graphe tel que tout couple de sommets sont à distance 2 dans ce sous graphe. Enfin, dans le contexte des sites de rencontre, je propose d'étudier une définition de communauté potentielle dans le sens où les membres de la communauté ne se connaissent pas, mais sont liés par des connaissances communes. A social network can be modeled by a graph in which vertices represent members, and edges represent relationships. In particular, I study four different definitions of a community. First, a community structure can be defined as a partition of the vertices such that each vertex has a greater proportion of neighbors in its part than in any other part. This definition can be adapted in order to study only one community. Then, a community can be viewed as a subgraph in which every two vertices are at distance 2 in this subgraph. Finally, in the context of online meetup services, I investigate a definition for potential communities in which members do not know each other but are related by their common neighbors. In regard to these proposed definitions, I study computational complexity and approximation within problems that either relate to the existence of such communities or to finding them in graphs

Understanding community dynamics has always been a challenge for policy-makers. Often community policy has been ineffective and wasteful. This research explores and sets out an alternative, complexity-informed approach to community studies. The research develops an innovative, two-stage interview methodology informed by complexity considerations. This methodology is applied to two case studies of community-based organisations in Newcastle upon Tyne. The two case studies allow a comparative assessment of the complexity-informed methodology. In this way, the research uses a complexity-informed approach to produce a holistic and realistic view of the community being examined. By analysing the contribution of those present the research is able to capture information that is relevant and that may be used to bring about change. Complexity-informed approaches are thus shown to be open, flexible, insightful, confidence-building and engaging, when considering people living and working in communities. The research finds complexity considerations to show that, to be effective, public policy needs to offer choices to local people as to how they want to interpret local government policy in their area. This requires more than evidence gathering and assessment of the evidence gathered. It requires the active involvement of the community. Complexity factors such as interaction and emergence are used to identify important relationships and to assess social, economic and environmental changes from the community point of view. These are considered in the context in which they occur and for as long as the situation applies. A complexity-informed approach is shown to open the way for community interventions based on community views and needs. In doing this complexity is able to support genuine decision-making and action by communities for communities. Through discussion and reflection, the thesis finds this to be a suitable basis for public policy formation.

This contribution treats some of the basic problems related to the origins of social complexity in ancient Perú and to such crucial definitions as domestication and sedentism. The necessity of including the concept of simplicity in discussions of complexity is stressed, as well as that of discerning the relevance and interrelation between simple and complex institutions. Further, the corresponding chronology of Perú also is in need of standardization and more precise definitions. Lastly, the papers included in this volume are discussed briefly.<br>Este aporte aborda algunos problemas básicos relacionados con el origen de la complejidad social en el Perú antiguo y la complejidad inherente de definiciones centrales como domesticación y sedentarización. Asimismo, enfatiza la necesidad de incluir lo ‘no complejo’ en la discusión de la complejidad, y de enfocar la relevancia respectiva y la interrelación entre ‘lo simple’ y ‘lo complejo’. Más aún, la cronología pertinente usada en el Perú requiere de una uniformización y definiciones más precisas. Por último, se presentan los trabajos incluidos en este número.

It is hard to deny that how Information and Communication Technologies are used by social movements is an issue of great importance. However, it is equally difficult to ascribe meaning to such use - it remains a contested topic within academia and in popular media. In this thesis I develop, demonstrate, and test a unique approach to studying ICT use in social movements which is informed by complexity theory and phronetic social science.

As a multidimensional phenomenon, cyberbullying is closely linked to the exponential growth of information and communication technology. The aggressive, intimidating, systematic and recurring behaviors typify this kind of bullying, which was previously restricted to physical, school and non-school spaces, and today transcends into cyberspace. The analyses of this thesis are based on the complex thinking, proposed by Edgar Morin. Therefore, the study was developed in a qualitative approach. By examining cyberbullying in the cyberspace, this research is also characterized by the use of the ethnographic methodology. The data and information obtained were analyzed in the light of three categories of Morin’s thought: interactivity, complexity and simplification. This interpretative procedure was carried out according to the assumptions of the content analysis defined by Bardin (2010), taking as a universe of research, discourses that involve the cyberbullying phenomenon published by three major Brazilian newspapers and by three virtual communities on Facebook. The study showed that, in the contents of the newspapers and virtual communities analyzed, by promoting a fragmented and sensationalist approach to cyberbullying, these information vehicles promote the construction of a reductionist and therefore partial view of this phenomenon, disregarding its biological, social, cultural and psychological dimensions, elements that make up the totality of this social event.<br>Cette thèse a pour objet d'étude le phénomène cyberbullying dans les médias électroniques virtuels. Comme phénomène multidimensionnel, le cyberbullying est étroitement lié à la croissance exponentielle de la technologie de l'information et de la communication. Les comportements agressifs, intimidateurs, systématiques et récurrents, caractérisent ce type de bullying qui, auparavant limité aux espaces présentiels, scolaires et non scolaires, transcende aujourd'hui au cyberespace. Les analyses de cette thèse se reposent sur la pensée complexe proposée par Edgar Morin. Par conséquent, l'étude est développée dans une approche qualitative. Lors de l'étude du Cyberbullying, dans le cyberespace, cette recherche se caractérise également par l'utilisation de la méthodologie ethnographique. Al examinar el acoso cibernético en el ciberespacio, esta investigación también se caracteriza por el uso de la metodología etnográfica. Cette thèse en stratégie vise à comprendre comment les organisations pluralistes, qui combinent une pluralité de logiques d’action, peuvent conduire la transformation délibérée de leurs doctrines. Elle développe une approche originale du travail politico-stratégique dans les organisations pluralistes, approche qui s’appuie sur les théories pragmatistes de la rationalité et des institutions. Les résultats qu’elle présente sont issus d’une recherche de terrain (ethnographie et intervention) réalisée au sein d’une grande mutuelle d’assurance française, la Macif, qui est un acteur référent dans le champ de l’économie sociale. Le premier volet de la recherche a permis d’identifier et d’analyser les obstacles que rencontrent les organisations pluralistes lorsqu’elles cherchent à transformer leurs doctrines. Le second volet a permis de conceptualiser et d’expérimenter les modalités sous lesquelles elles peuvent parvenir à opérer la transformation souhaitée. La thèse présente pour finir un certain nombre de propositions visant à guider l’élaboration de la stratégie des organisations pluralistes<br>This doctoral research aims at understanding how pluralistic organizations that combine multiple institutional logics can engage in their deliberate transformation. It draws on pragmatist theories of rationality and of institutions to develop a novel perspective on strategy practices and processes in pluralistic organizations. Its results rely on fieldwork (ethnography and research-action) conducted within a French mutual insurance company, Macif, which is a key actor in the field of social economy. Firstly, this research identifies and analyzes the major obstacles that prevent pluralistic organizations from conducting such a transformation. Secondly, it conceptualizes and experiments ways to do so. Finally, this research suggests some methods for strategizing and organizing in pluralistic contexts

Dans cette thèse nous nous intéressons à comprendre comment les entrepreneurs sociaux créent de la valeur. Notre objectif est de modéliser le processus de création de valeur que nous avons observé sur un projet de circuits courts à travers d’une méthodologie de recherche intervention. La sociologie de la traduction et l’analyse de discours ont été mobilisés pour rendre compte de la complexité dans la définition, la perception et le partage de la valeur du dit projet d’entreprise social. Nous voulons démontrer que la création de valeur dans l'entrepreneuriat social est un processus de traduction interactif, dynamique et complexe, parmi une multitude des visions et représentations sur la satisfaction des besoins, propres à chaque partie prenante, qui vont toucher ne pas seulement au domaine de la conception, réalisation et valorisation de l’activité économique, mais aussi leurs répercussions dans le domaine social et environnemental. Nous avons observé que les entrepreneurs sociaux construisent la valeur de leur projet en repérant un besoin social, ou en s’engageant dans une idéale de société, qu’ils vont incorporer à son échelle personnelle des valeurs, fruit d’un contexte et d’une histoire particulière. Cette appropriation va déterminer l’intentionnalité de leur action entrepreneuriale dont la pérennité dépendra du soutien du réseau et de la cohérence globale de l’organisation elle-même. Nous avons proposé donc, au niveau terrain l’amélioration d’un outil heuristique pour accompagner la création de valeur, et au niveau théorique un cadre pour comprendre l’agir des entrepreneurs et la perception de leurs parties prenantes<br>In this thesis, we are interested in understanding how social entrepreneurs create value. Our goal is to model the process of value creation that we observed on a short supply chain project through an action research methodology. The sociology of translation and discourse analysis have been used to take into account the complexity of the definition, the perception and the process of sharing the value of a social enterprise project. We want to demonstrate that value creation in social entrepreneurship is an interactive, dynamic and complex translation process. It takes into account a multitude of visions and representations on the satisfaction of the needs of each stakeholder that will affect not only the design and the implementation of economic activity, but also their social and environmental impact. We have observed that social entrepreneurs construct the value of their project by identifying a social need, or by committing themselves to a societal ideal that they will incorporate into their values on a personal scale. This adoption process will determine the intentionality of their entrepreneurial action, the sustainability of which will depend on the support of their network and the overall coherence of the organization itself. We therefore proposed, at the field level, the improvement of a heuristic tool to support value creation and, at the theoretical level, a framework for understanding social entrepreneurship based on the actions of entrepreneurs and the perception of their stakeholders

Cette thèse de doctorat a pour objet une exploration des communs sur les modes de gestion ainsi que sur les usages par rapport aux bénéfices collectifs issus de leur exploitation en contexte de changement climatique dans le Delta du Saloum (Centre-Ouest du Sénégal). La recherche prend appui sur un cadre théorique construit à partir de la théorie de la gouvernance des communs à laquelle nous avons combiné les approches de la psychosociologie des représentations sociales, de la socio-anthropologie du développement et de la sociologie de la transaction sociale. Notre zone d’étude est constituée par le delta du Saloum qui est formé par un entrelacs d’îles riches en biodiversité mais vulnérables au changement climatique. En outre, les dynamiques sociales témoignent de l’entrain dans la production du quotidien par les femmes, les jeunes et les projets de développement. À partir d’une posture épistémologique basée sur le « paradigme » de la pensée complexe et la perspective d’une « connaissance subjectale », la méthode de recherche est essentiellement qualitative avec une démarche ethnographique. À partir de l’étude de cas, l’utilisation d’une batterie d’outils (revue documentaire, observation, entretiens individuels et de groupe) a débouché sur une diversité de matériaux discursifs et factuels. L’analyse des données de terrain a été menée par rapport aux dimensions suivantes : les dispositifs organisationnels, les rapports d’action et d’interaction dans l’action collective, l’intentionnalité et l’incertitude des pratiques sociales, l’historicité, l’espace et la prospective. Nos résultats de recherche laissent voir que, nonobstant un contexte de changement climatique contraignant et l’existence de représentations sociales différentielles dues à la présence d’une multiplicité d’acteurs au sein de l’espace du delta du Saloum, la gestion des communs (pêcheries et foresterie) est réussie à travers les organisations communautaires et les structures mêlées de compétences d’acteurs sociaux, étatiques et non-gouvernementaux au moyen de transactions sociales pour la conservation des ressources naturelles par un « ordre négocié » de durabilité d’une part, et d’autre part, les usages des bénéfices collectifs issus de leur exploitation pour réaliser des projets communautaires. En effet, l’action collective des différents acteurs sociaux et institutionnels qui a été désignée « connexité socio-institutionnelle » est une condition à la réussite de la gestion des communs comme celle-ci est une forme d’adaptation au changement climatique par le construit social de l’espace à partir de l’historicité de la communauté des Niominka qui habitent en majorité cet espace. Par ailleurs, les rapports entre les multiples acteurs ainsi qu’avec les objets environnementaux comme les ressources naturelles et l’espace exigent de l’objet de la sociologie un prolongement et un intérêt vers les faits de nature après que l’approche psychosociologique a obtenu droit de cité. Cette voie n’est possible pour l’heure qu’avec l’inter/transdisciplinarité dans les sciences de l’environnement à partir du concept de vulnérabilité<br>This PhD thesis explores the management and use of commons in relation to the collective benefits derived from their exploitation in the context of climate change in the Saloum Delta, in central-western Senegal. The research is based on a theoretical framework built on the theory of the governance of the commons, to which we combined approaches of psychosociology of social representations, socio-anthropology of development, and sociology of social transaction. The research was conducted in the Saloum Delta, which is formed by an interlacing of islands rich in biodiversity but vulnerable to climate change. In addition, social dynamics show the drive with which women, youth and development projects produce the everyday. Building on an epistemological posture based on the ‘paradigm’ of complex thought and the perspective of a ‘subjectal knowledge,’ the research methodology is primarily qualitative with an ethnographic approach. Based on a case study, the use of a set of tools (documentary review, observation, individual and group interviews) produced a diversity of discursive and factual data. The analysis of the data collected in the field was conducted with a focus on the following dimensions: organisational settings, action and interaction relations in collective action, intentionality and uncertainty of social practices, historicity, space, and forecasting. Research findings show that commons (fishery and forestry), despite a constraining context of climate change and the existence of differential social representations resulting from the presence of a multiplicity of actors in the Saloum Delta, are successfully managed by community organisations and groups of actors working together, including social, state and non-state actors. This is done through social transactions for the conservation of natural resources through a ‘negotiated order’ of sustainability on the one hand, and the uses of collective benefits derived from their exploitation to carry out community projects on the other hand. In fact, collective action of various social and institutional actors – which has been referred to as ‘socio-institutional connection’ – is a condition for the successful management of commons. It is also an adaption strategy to climate change by the social construct of space based on the historicity of the Niominka community – the main group in this region. Furthermore, relations among various actors and with environmental objects such as natural resources and space require the object of sociology to be extended and an interest in facts of nature after the psychosociological approach gains acceptance. For now, this is only possible with inter- and transdisciplinarity in environmental science starting from the concept of vulnerability

‘This BDI-model (beliefs, desires and intents) is a very commonly used method for modeling intelligent agents. Th‘e model is very commonly extended with new features and att‹ributes. Th‘is thesis presents a new such extension of the BDI-model with added social awareness. Multi-agent system can be very computationally complex so in order to €find out how well this architecture would work, a complexity analysis was made. Th‘e results of this analysis shows that the agent always will select a goal that appears to be desirable by other agents in the environment. It does however come with a computational cost where the amount of di‚fferent options the agent has to choose from plays a big part in the speed of the algorithm.

Social Innovation Laboratories, or short, social labs, represent an emerging field of lab-based inquiry to sustainability transitions, which emphasize learning through experimentation to find new ways of addressing highly complex challenges. Yet, a key challenge for these initiatives is on one hand to know whether they are “on track”, on the other hand, to evaluate their contribution to addressing a complex challenge. Our hypothesis was that adaptive capacity could serve as a lens for the evaluation of a social labs impact to building social resilience and hence in building capacities necessary for a transition towards sustainability. The aim of this research was firstly to gain a better understanding of the evaluation practices of social labs and secondly to find out how the adaptive capacity of a social lab could be evaluated and might, more generally, point towards a novel approach of evaluating in complexity for strategic sustainable development. Our results suggest that adaptive capacity could support evaluations by providing a mirror for the essential features of a social lab to be resilient. We propose three key aspects to evaluate: systems thinking, trust and prototyping capacity. Yet, this is only a first stepping stone toward an evaluation framework, which will require field testing and further research.

This study uses social identity complexity theory to investigate complexity of identity in Luke with focus on Luke 15 to determine how Luke solved social conflict. The discussion from Luke is used as analogical or comparative discussion to solve complexity of identity in Zimbabwe that has led to political violence and economic stagnation and the conflict-resolution in Acts 15 and the Global Political Agreement in Zimbabwe. It is the purpose of this research to identify the overlap and complexity identities within the early Christianities especially in Luke’s community and to make a possible reconstruction of new identity formation within the context of Zimbabwe using kerygmatic strategies of conflict-resolution of the first century church in Acts 15. The social identity complexity as a theoretical framework of this research helped to shed light on the conflict in Luke’s community and to analyse data. Acts 15 has been taken as a case study to give some insights in the conflict in the Jerusalem Council (Acts 15) on how social identity complexity helped in bringing in reconciliation to characters such as Peter and Paul. The factors that provoked conflict in the first century church of the Jerusalem Council has been explored. The research argues that there are kerygmatic strategies of conflict-resolution of the first century church in Acts 15, which can be read alongside the Zimbabwean political situation. Aquesta tesi investiga les implicacions de la complexitat per a la producció de models de sistemes social-ecològics i per a la interfície ciència-política. Em centre en la política energètica a la Unió Europea (UE), a través d’estudis de casos desenvolupats dins del projecte MAGIC d’Horitzó 2020. A través d’una sèrie d’estudis de casos, desenvolupo les eines necessàries per descriure els sistemes energètics a diverses escales, qüestiono si les narratives que sustenten la política energètica de la UE són adequades per atendre les seves preocupacions i inspecciono el paper que juga el món acadèmic en la configuració d’aquestes narratives. Les implicacions metodològiques de la modelització de sistemes energètics a la interfície ciència-política s’aborden mitjançant un estudi de cas del sector energètic de Catalunya. Basant-se en la teoria de la jerarquia, el sistema energètic de la regió es descriu en termes estructurals i en termes funcionals, mostrant com una descripció funcional és útil per guiar les qüestions de política. Mitjançant la cartografia de les dimensions del nexe entre nivells jeràrquics, aquest primer estudi de cas proporciona les eines per generar avaluacions de nexes de manera oberta i transparent. En el segon cas pràctic, en col·laboració amb Zora Kovacic, em centro en la seguretat energètica, un dels pilars de la Unió Energètica de la UE. Inspeccionant les múltiples definicions i dimensions relacionades amb la seguretat energètica a la literatura acadèmica, argumentem que l’ambigüitat del terme és funcional en la formulació de polítiques i no és una qüestió que s’hagi de resoldre amb una major claredat definicional. Més aviat, l’ambigüitat està incrustada en la complexitat. Això suggereix que la producció de definicions i indicadors de seguretat energètica en el món acadèmic pot no ser útil per a les polítiques. El tercer estudi de cas analitza les narratives que envolten els vehicles elèctrics a la UE. Les narratives de polítiques dels documents de la UE s’identifiquen mitjançant una anàlisi de text i s’assignen a nivells jeràrquics. S’introdueix una taxonomia per classificar les narratives polítiques, distingint entre narratives normatives, narratives de justificació i narratives explicatives. Mitjançant una revisió d’estudis i informes existents, s’inspecciona la qualitat de la constel·lació de narratives que envolten els vehicles elèctrics, centrant-se en la relació entre les narratives normatives i de justificació. Els resultats mostren com aquesta relació és incerta en el millor dels casos. Centrant-se en el paper que juga la ciència en la informació de les polítiques, assenyalen la necessitat de reconèixer la manera en què les narratives de polítiques afecten i són afectades per les acadèmiques. El quart i més recent estudi de cas és una ampliació del primer, presentat aquí com a treball exploratori en curs. Els metabolismes energètics d’Espanya, Suècia i la UE es descriuen a través d’holarquies, incloent cada branca del sistema energètic (electricitat, calor, gas i combustibles). Aquest mapatge a gran escala s’utilitza per debatre dos temes centrals en la política energètica de la UE: la descarbonització i l’externalització. Poso en dubte les narratives de descarbonització de la UE i subratllo el coneixement incòmode sobre la dependència del sector energètic de la UE en les importacions.<br>Esta tesis investiga las implicaciones de la complejidad para la producción de modelos de sistemas social-ecológicos y para la interfaz ciencia-política. Me centro en la política energética en la Unión Europea (UE), a través de estudios de casos desarrollados dentro del proyecto MAGIC de Horizonte 2020. A través de una serie de estudios de casos, desarrollo las herramientas necesarias para describir los sistemas energéticos a diversas escalas, cuestiono si las narrativas que sustentan la política energética de la UE son adecuadas para atender sus preocupaciones e inspeccionar el papel que juega el mundo académico en la configuración de estas narrativas. Las implicaciones metodológicas de la modelización de sistemas energéticos en la interfaz ciencia-política se abordan mediante un estudio de caso del sector energético de Cataluña. Basándose en la teoría de la jerarquía, el sistema energético de la región se describe en términos estructurales y en términos funcionales, mostrando como una descripción funcional es útil para guiar las cuestiones de política. Mediante la cartografía de las dimensiones del nexo entre niveles jerárquicos, este primer estudio de caso proporciona las herramientas para generar evaluaciones de nexos de manera abierta y transparente. En el segundo caso práctico, en colaboración con Zora Kovacic, me centro en la seguridad energética, uno de los pilares de la Unión Energética de la UE. nspeccionando las múltiples definiciones y dimensiones relacionadas con la seguridad energética en la literatura académica, argumentamos que la ambigüedad del término es funcional en la formulación de políticas y no es una cuestión que deba resolver con una mayor claridad definicional. Más bien, la ambigüedad está incrustada en la complejidad. Esto sugiere que la producción de definiciones e indicadores de seguridad energética en el mundo académico puede no ser útil para las políticas. El tercer estudio de caso analiza las narrativas que rodean los vehículos eléctricos en la UE. Las narrativas de políticas de los documentos de la UE se identifican mediante un análisis de texto y se asignan a niveles jerárquicos. Se introduce una taxonomía para clasificar las narrativas políticas, distinguiendo entre narrativas normativas, narrativas de justificación y narrativas explicativas. Mediante una revisión de estudios e informes existentes, se inspecciona la calidad de la constelación de narrativas que rodean los vehículos eléctricos, centrándose en la relación entre las narrativas normativas y de justificación. Los resultados muestran cómo esta relación es incierta en el mejor de los casos. Centrándose en el papel que juega la ciencia en la información de las políticas, señalan la necesidad de reconocer la manera en que las narrativas de políticas afectan y son afectadas por las académicas. El cuarto y más reciente estudio de caso es una ampliación del primero, presentado aquí como trabajo exploratorio en curso. Los metabolismos energéticos de España, Suecia y la UE se describen a través de holarquies, incluyendo cada rama del sistema energético (electricidad, calor, gas y combustibles). Pongo en duda las narrativas de descarbonización de la UE y subrayo el conocimiento incómodo sobre la dependencia del sector energético de la UE en las importaciones.<br>This thesis investigates the implications of complexity for the production of models of social-ecological systems and for the science-policy interface. I focus on energy policy in the European Union (EU), through case studies developed within the Horizon 2020 project MAGIC. The way I refer to complexity builds on the work of Robert Rosen, who defined a complex system as one which can be described in non-equivalent and non-reducible ways. This powerful definition, which I refer to as Rosennian (or relational) complexity, calls for deep reflections on the way scientific knowledge is used to inform our image of the world and how we act upon that image. It focuses on the role played by observers in perceiving systems and in modelling them, through devices that I refer to as narratives. Narratives allow reducing the information space of complex reality into a manageable storyline which can be used to guide action, establishing causal patterns across impredicative processes operating at different scales. As such, they are central both to science and to policymaking. Narratives cannot be true or false, only adequate or obsolete with respect to the perception of a system. Through a series of case studies, I develop the tools needed to describe energy systems across multiple scales, question whether narratives underpinning EU energy policy are adequate in addressing their concerns and inspect the role played by academia in shaping those narratives. The methodological implications of modelling energy systems at the science-policy interface are addressed through a case study of Catalonia's energy sector. Building on hierarchy theory, the region's energy system is described in structural terms and in functional ones, showing how a functional description is useful in guiding policy questions. By mapping nexus dimensions across hierarchical levels, this first case study provides the tools to generate nexus assessments in open and transparent ways. In the second case study, a collaboration with Zora Kovacic, I focus on energy security, one of the pillars of the EU's Energy Union. Inspecting the multiple definitions and dimensions connected with energy security in the academic literature, we argue that the ambiguity of the term is functional in policymaking and is not a matter to be solved with increased definitional clarity. Rather, ambiguity is embedded in complexity. This suggests that the production of definitions and indicators of energy security in academia may not be useful to policy. The third case study analyses the narratives surrounding electric vehicles in the EU. Policy narratives in EU documents are identified through a text analysis and mapped across hierarchical levels. A taxonomy to classify policy narratives is introduced, making the distinction between normative narratives, justification narratives and explanation narratives. Through a review of existing studies and reports, the quality of the constellation of narratives surrounding electric vehicles is inspected, focusing on the relationship between normative and justification narratives. Results show how this relationship is uncertain at best. Focusing on the role played by science in informing policy, they point to the need of recognising the way in which policy narratives affect and are affected by academic ones. The fourth and most recent case study is an expansion of the first one, presented here as exploratory work in progress. The energy metabolisms of Spain, Sweden and the EU are described through holarchies, including each branch of the energy system (electricity, heat, gas and fuels). This multi-scale mapping is used to discuss two issues that are central to EU energy policy: decarbonisation and externalisation. I question EU decarbonisation narratives and highlight uncomfortable knowledge regarding the reliance of the EU's energy sector on imports.<br>Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation explores the utility of using Complexity studies to improve our understanding of peacebuilding and the coherence dilemma, which is regarded as one of the most significant problems facing peacebuilding interventions. Peacebuilding is said to be complex, and this study investigates what this implies, and asks whether Complexity could be of use in improving our understanding of the assumed causal link between coherence, effectiveness and sustainability. Peacebuilding refers to all actions undertaken by the international community and local actors to consolidate the peace – to prevent a (re)lapse into violent conflict – in a given conflict-prone system. The nexus between development, governance, politics and security has become a central focus of the international effort to manage transitions, and peacebuilding is increasingly seen as the collective framework within which these diverse dimensions of conflict management can be brought together in one common framework. The coherence dilemma refers to the persistent gap between policy-level assumptions about the value and causal role of coherence in the effectiveness of peacebuilding and empirical evidence to the contrary from peacebuilding practice. The dissertation argues that the peacebuilding process is challenged by enduring and deep-rooted tensions and contradictions, and that there are thus inherent limits and constraints regarding the degree to which coherence can be achieved in any particular peacebuilding context. On the basis of the application of the general characteristics of Complexity to peacebuilding, the following three recommendations reflect the core findings of the study: (1) Peacebuilders need to concede that they cannot, from the outside, definitively analyse complex conflicts and design ‘solutions’ on behalf of a local society. Instead, they should facilitate inductive processes that assist knowledge to emerge from the local context, and such knowledge needs to be understood as provisional and subject to a continuous process of refinement and adaptation. (2) Peacebuilders have to recognise that self-sustainable peace is directly linked to, and influenced by, the extent to which a society has the capacity, and space, to selforganise. For peace consolidation to be self-sustainable, it has to be the result of a home-grown, bottom-up and context-specific process. (3) Peacebuilders need to acknowledge that they cannot defend the choices they make on the basis of pre-determined models or lessons learned elsewhere. The ethical implications of their choices have to be considered in the local context, and the effects of their interventions - intended and unintended - need to be continuously assessed against the lived-experience of the societies they are assisting. Peacebuilding should be guided by the principle that those who will have to live with the consequences should have the agency to make decisions about their own future. The art of peacebuilding lies in pursuing the appropriate balance between international support and home-grown solutions. The dissertation argues that the international community has, to date, failed to find this balance. As a result, peacebuilding has often contributed to the very societal weaknesses and fragilities that it was meant to resolve. On the basis of these insights, the dissertation concludes with a call for a significant re-balancing of the relationship between international influence and local agency, where the role of the external peacebuilder is limited to assisting, facilitating and stimulating the capacity of the local society to self-organise. The dissertation thus argues for reframing peacebuilding as something that must be essentially local.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie proefskrif ondersoek die toepaslikheid van Kompleksiteitstudies om ons begrip van vredesbou en die dilemma van koherensie te verbeter, wat as een van die gewigtigste probleme vir die toetrede tot vredesbou beskou kan word. Vredesbou word as kompleks beskou en die implikasies van hierdie siening word in hierdie proefskrif ondersoek. Dienooreenkomstig word die vraag na die nut van Kompleksiteitstudies vir die verbetering van ons begrip van die veronderstelde kousale verband tussen koherensie, doeltreffendheid en volhoubaarheid aangespreek. The objective of this work is to use complexity theory to propose a new interpretation of industrial clusters. Industrial clusters constitute a specific type of econosphere, whose driving principles are self-organisation, economies of diversity and a configuration that optimises the exploration of diversity starting from the configuration of connectivity of the system. This work shows the centrality of diversity by linking complexity theory (intended as "a method for understanding diversity"') to different concepts such as power law distributions, self-organisation, autocatalytic cycles and connectivity.I propose a method to distinguish self-organising from non self-organising agglomerations, based on the correlation between self-organising dynamics and power law network theories. Self-organised criticality, rank-size rule and scale-free networks theories become three aspects indicating a common underlying pattern, i.e. the edge of chaos dynamic. I propose a general model of development of industrial clusters, based on the mutual interaction between social and economic autocatalytic cycle. Starting from Kauffman's idea(^2) on the autocatalytic properties of diversity, I illustrate how the loops of the economies of diversity are based on the expansion of systemic diversity (product of diversity and connectivity). My thesis provides a way to measure systemic diversity. In particular I introduce the distinction between modular innovation at the agent level and architectural innovation at the network level and show that the cluster constitutes an appropriate organisational form to manage the tension and dynamics of simultaneous modular and architectural innovation. The thesis is structured around two propositions: 1. Self-organising systems are closer to a power law than hierarchical systems or aggregates (collection of parts). For industrial agglomerations (SLLs), the closeness to a power law is related to the degree of self-organisation present in the agglomeration, and emerges in the agglomeration’s structural and/or behavioural properties subject to self-organising dynamic.2. Self-organising systems maximise the product of diversity times connectivity at a rate higher than hierarchical systems.

L'accident vasculaire cérébral, est une pathologie aigüe et grave, qui peut conduire au décès rapide du patient ou à un handicap neurologique sévère, moteur et/ou cognitif. Dans les situations les plus sévères, l'action médicale amène à envisager des limitations ou arrêt de certains traitements si le pronostic s'avère " catastrophique ", signifiant le plus souvent le risque d'un handicap " inacceptable ".L'action médicale dans ces situations est particulièrement complexe. Elle pose la question de la finalité de l'acte médical au regard de la qualité de vie future du patient, qui suppose l'estimation délicate de la valeur de la vie, prédiction par essence incertaine. Mais si le pronostic tient une place centrale dans cette action, d'autres facteurs jouent également un rôle déterminant, comme celui du contexte. Ce travail de thèse propose une exploration des notions de pronostic et de " proportionnalité des soins " et une approche éthique reposant sur la prise en compte de la complexité et la délibération aristotélicienne.

Group size is known to correlate with various indices of brain size in the primates. The possibility that increases in group size foster social complexity forms the central empirical topic of this thesis. A ten month field study of olive baboons, Papio cynocephalus anubis, was carried out on the Laikipia Plateau, Kenya. Data were collected on a wide range of social behaviours in two troops, one smaller than the mean group size for Papio and one larger. The concepts of complexity and social complexity are critically examined with a view to their quantification in behaviour and cognition. The status of social complexity in the debate concerning the evolution of high intelligence in the Primate Order is discussed. Dimensions of social complexity are developed and then investigated empirically. Females in the two troops showed similar grooming frequencies and grooming network sizes. However, the troops differed in the patterning of their grooming with respect to rank: individuals in the small troop groomed those of high rank, individuals in the large troop groomed those of rank similar to themselves. Cluster analysis of spatial proximities showed no sign of cliquishness in either troop. Females formed associations with particular males ('friendships') in both troops but there were no clear differences in either the number or stability of these associations. The rate of interaction was higher in the large troop, but, proportional to total interaction rates, the rates of agonistic and polyadic interactions were not. The rate of interaction was higher for adult and sub-adult females than for adult and sub-adult males. In comparison, the proportion of interactions that were agonistic was greater for the adult and sub-adult males. The variability of response to affiliation that individuals faced was the same across the two troops. Males, however, faced more variability than did females largely because of a high number of avoidant responses. The absence of strong differences in social complexity between differently sized troops suggests that, proximally, cognitive complexity limits social complexity. Thus, interspecific comparisons may prove to be the most fertile area of research into complexity in the future.

The metabolic expense of producing and operating neural tissue required for adaptive behaviour is considered a significant selective force in brain evolution. In primates, brain size correlates positively with group size, presumably owing to the greater cognitive demands of complex social relationships in large societies. Social complexity in eusocial insects is also associated with large groups, as well as collective intelligence and division of labour among sterile workers. However, superorganism phenotypes may lower cognitive demands on behaviourally specialized workers resulting in selection for decreased brain size and/or energetic costs of brain metabolism. To test this hypothesis, we compared brain investment patterns and cytochrome oxidase (COX) activity, a proxy for ATP usage, in two ant species contrasting in social organization. Socially complex Oecophylla smaragdina workers had larger brain size and relative investment in the mushroom bodies (MBs)-higher order sensory processing compartments-than the more socially basic Formica subsericea workers. Oecophylla smaragdina workers, however, had reduced COX activity in the MBs. Our results suggest that as in primates, ant group size is associated with large brain size. The elevated costs of investment in metabolically expensive brain tissue in the socially complex O. smaragdina, however, appear to be offset by decreased energetic costs.

The affinity between the work of the Austrian economist Friedrich A. Hayek and the approach of Complexity Economics is widely recognized by the literature. In spite of this, there still is a lack of studies that seek to analyze in depth the relationship between Hayek and complexity. This dissertation is a contribution to the filling of this large gap in the literature. In the first part of the work, we analyze the various periods in the development of Hayek\'s vision of complexity, showing that this vision is strongly present in his works on knowledge, competition, methodology, evolution, and spontaneous order. In the second part, we explore how Hayek was influenced by two of the main precursors of modern complexity theory - cybernetics and general system theory - from the time he was working on his book on theoretical psychology, The Sensory Order (1952), until the end of his intellectual career.<br>A afinidade entre a obra do economista austríaco Friedrich A. Esta dissertação é uma contribuição para o preenchimento dessa grande lacuna na literatura. Na primeira parte do trabalho, os diversos períodos no desenvolvimento da visão de complexidade de Hayek são analisados, evidenciando-se como tal visão está fortemente presente em seus trabalhos sobre conhecimento, competição, metodologia, evolução e ordem espontânea. Na segunda parte, exploramos como Hayek foi influenciado por dois dos principais precursores da moderna teoria da complexidade - a cibernética e a teoria geral do sistema - desde o período em que estava trabalhando no seu livro sobre psicologia teórica, The Sensory Order (1952), até o final de sua carreira intelectual.
