Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract: This paper studies the figure of Augustus in Catalan historiography, from the monastic chronicles of the 12th century to the 20th century nationalistic claims. The survey of this long period allows us to see how Augustus goes from being part of a system of dating, relating to the birth of Christ, to becoming a symbol of identity, due to the (fortuitous) circumstance of having stayed briefly in Tarraco, ruling his empire from Catalonia. During this process, Augustus experienced both moments of absolute historiographical silence and of complete disdain. However, he finally reached a timeless and uncritical consideration typical of the classics. The key element is to establish whether this treatment of his character is performed in parallel to the official Spanish historiography or opposed to it.Key words: Augustus, Catalan historiography.

Abstract:
The identification of adequate wastewater treatment for small communities is a complex problem since it demands a combination of data from different sources, such as aspects of the community and landscape, the receiving environment and the available wastewater treatment technologies. The Catalan Water Agency (Agència Catalana de l'Aigua) considered using an EDSS (Environmental Decision Support System) as a tool to help water managers select the most adequate treatment for the urban wastewater of nearly 3,500 small communities in Catalonia (Spain). From that moment, EDSS was applied to all the river basins in Catalonia. In this paper the authors present the results obtained for the 76 small communities located in one of these river basins: the Fluvia River Basin. The characteristics of the community used in the reasoning process of the EDSS, the list of selected wastewater treatment alternatives, the technical environmental justification for the selected treatments and the reasons for discarding, favouring or disadvantaging them are presented. Finally, some results for the Fluvia River Basin are compared with those obtained in other Catalan river basins with different characteristics in order to evaluate which are the significant features in identifying adequate wastewater treatments.

Abstract:

This article deals with the figure of Catalina of Trastámara, or of Castile, eldest child of Juan II and Maria of Aragon. For the first time, her brief life and her role in the complex political framework of the early years of her father’s personal reign are analyzed. This will include a thorough look at the ceremonial, institutional, representative and propagandistic aspects the monarchy set forth to legitimize her status as heiress to the Castilian throne as well as at the time of the king’s premature death. The study is based on a solid critical apparatus of various chronicle sources and a wide range of rarely utilized archival records.

Parole-chiave: Boezio; volgarizzamenti medievali; volgarizzamenti catalani; Pere Saplana; Antoni Ginebreda Abstract: The history of Boethius’s De consolatione philosophiae Catalan translation is particularly complex for what concerns its manuscript tradition as well as for the textual differences that can be found in the exstant versions of it. The lost original version of this vernacular translation, written around the years 1358-1362 by the Dominican friar Pere Saplana, is preserved in two different versions. The first one (?) is anonymous, and has survived in its complete form in a Castilian translation and in a Catalan fragment. The second (?) is transmitted by a large number of witnesses and is the result of a revision of Saplana’s text made around 1390 by the Dominican Antoni Ginebreda. One of the two manuscripts containing this translation preserved in the Arxiu Comarcal de la Segarra of Cervera (designed as J) was recently mentioned as the possible bearer of a version very similar to ?, considered the closest to Saplana’s original text. Abstract:
Abstract We used starch-gel electrophoresis to assess variability at 41 genetic loci in 208 individuals from 11 breeding populations of the Western Flycatcher (Empidonax difficilis) complex. Genic variability was substantial in most populations and equivalent to levels found in other avian taxa. A sample of E. d. insulicola from Santa Catalina Island, however, showed reduced heterozygosity and an unusually low percentage of polymorphic loci. We attribute this to a bottleneck at the time of the original colonization. Nei's genetic distances among populations of one taxon ranged from D̄ = 0.0003 (in E. d. difficilis) to D̄ = 0.0033 (in E. d. hellmayri). Intertaxon Nei's D̄ ranged from 0.009 (E. d. insulicola vs. E. d. difficilis) and 0.0149 (E. d. difficilis vs. E. d. hellmayri) to 0.0228 (E. d. insulicola vs. E. d. hellmayri). to 0.0228 (E. d. insulicola vs. E. d. hellmayri). F statistics revealed significant population subdivision within the complex. With Slatkin's rare-allele method we estimated the gene-flow parameter, Nm. Mainland populations experience moderately high gene flow (9.62 immigrants/generation). In contrast, Santa Catalina Island receives an estimated 0.093 immigrants/generation, pointing to very low gene flow and essential genetic isolation. Genetic distances yielded phenograms and distance Wagner trees that provide hypotheses for the relationships and phylogenesis of populations in western North America. The lineage leading to modern E. d. difficilis split from that leading to E. flavescens in the mid-Pleistocene at 866,800 yr BP; the ancestors of modern E. d. difficilis diverged from those of present-day E. d. hellmayri at 248,700 yr BP; and the stock leading to modern E. d. insulicola budded from the lineage that became E. d. difficilis in the late Pleistocene, approximately 187,000 yr BP. Empidonax d. difficilis and E. d. hellmayri nest sympatrically and mate assortatively in the Siskiyou region of northern California. Interbreeding has not been demonstrated conclusively, and we regard these taxa as biologic species. In the absence of a test of sympatry, the well-differentiated form E. d. insulicola of the California Channel Islands cannot be proved to be a biologic species. It is clearly a phylogenetic species, however, in the sense of Cracraft.

Abstract:
Abstract Catalonia is well known for being a bilingual region with language policies that give full support to promoting Catalan. More recently, the number of languages spoken in Catalonia has risen significantly due to immigration flows, while immigration policies encourage all citizens living in Catalonia to be able to communicate in Catalan with the public Administration. The same immigration policies, however, also acknowledge that interpreting (or intercultural mediation) may be necessary to facilitate immigrants’ rights to access public services during the first few years they are living in Catalonia. This article analyses the relationship between a minoritized language (Catalan), a dominant language (Spanish) and a group of recently arrived languages (Standard Chinese and other Chinese varieties) from the perspective of public service interpreting. It discusses some of the results of an empirical qualitative research which included: (a) interviews with public service interpreters and intercultural mediators working with Chinese living in Catalonia, (b) interviews with managers and coordinators in charge of interpreting or mediation services, and (c) questionnaires answered by Chinese users of public services in Catalonia. This research depicts a complex reality: it not only reflects interpreters’ and managers’ biases towards Spanish or Catalan, often motivated by their place of origin or life experience, but also the challenges when dealing with linguistic variation, i.e. the variety of languages (geolects and mutually unintelligible dialects) included under the umbrella term of Chinese.

Showing both diachronic and comparative perspectives, the work of Prof. Tamames provides fruitful insights into modern traces of centurieslasting complex, complicated, if not to say tense attitudes of the Spanish government to Barcelona and local visions of the central authority. The new edition of the book embraces the nuances of this phenomenon in the period from the rise of the unified Spanish monarchy in 1479 up to the 2017 controversial independence referendum. According to the findings of Prof. Tamames, Catalonia’s independence project lacks legitimacy in many ways and, consequently, is absurd. Abstract:
Abstract This article analyzes the legislation of the two territories that have the most advanced legal framework regarding language policies towards Catalan: Andorra and Catalonia. The study of the legislation in relation to contexts of social and institutional use shows how this legal framework is not sufficient to change Catalan from being a minoritized language, since the phenomenon of minoritization is innate to the ecosystem in which languages develop. This ecosystem is conditioned by the presence of Castilian as a lingua franca on both sides of the border between Andorra and Catalonia. In the case of Andorra, its status as a cross-border microstate makes it a plurilingual space with Castilian as a socially cross-cutting language; moreover, the fact that until recently there was no network of state schools hindered Catalan language normalisation efforts. Catalonia, on the other hand, is an even more complex example on account of how the implementation of llengua pròpia policy contradicts the constitutional control the Spanish state exercises on this.

Abstract:
The spread of the SARS-CoV-2 modeling is a challenging problem because of its complex nature and lack of information regarding certain aspects. In this paper, we explore a Digital Twin approach to model the pandemic situation in Catalonia. The Digital Twin is composed of three different dynamic models used to perform the validations by a Model Comparison approach. We detail how we use this approach to obtain knowledge regarding the effects of the nonpharmaceutical interventions and the problems we faced during the modeling process. We use Specification and Description Language (SDL) to represent the compartmental forecasting model for the SARS-CoV-2. Its graphical notation simplifies the different specialists’ understanding of the model hypotheses, which must be validated continuously following a Solution Validation approach. This model allows the successful forecasting of different scenarios for Catalonia. We present some formalization details, discuss the validation process and present some results obtained from the validation model discussion, which becomes a digital twin of the pandemic in Catalonia.

Abstract:
The Spanish 1978 Constitution establishes a complex state. In constitutional terms, it is not defined as a federal state, but rather as a unitary state with significant scope for political decentralization. This complex constitutional arrangement is in response to both internal and cultural features, and to a search for greater administrative efficiency. The pluri-national character of the state is the subject of fierce debate in Spain, while the way in which certain minority nations (Catalonia and the Basque Country) are accommodated is a permanent source of friction. This paper seeks to provide an overview of this complex political/constitutional situation by analysing the historical, political and legal developments that have occurred during the last 40 years, with a focus on the last developments of the Catalan crisis. Although Spain is markedly asymmetric in political and identity terms, this asymmetry is not adequately reflected in Constitutional Law. In addition, the ongoing tension between unionism and separatism in some regions poses significant challenges to the Spanish constitutional system as a whole, in particular, through the pro-independence process in the autonomous region of Catalonia.

Abstract: The monastery of Santa María de Vallbona has been, since its foundation, the most important cistercian feminine center of Catalonia. However, its state of conservation has been severely affected since the beginning of the xix century. The multiple events caused by the convulsive political, social and economic situation until the Spanish Civil War, aggravated by the alarming poverty of its community, prevented the realization of the most necessary interventions as at the time patrimonial consciousness was almost inexistent. This article covers the interventions done in the Monastery by Alejandro Ferrant Vázquez, conservator architect of the Fourth Zone between 1940 and 1976. Hisrestoration works supposed the general reconditioning of the structure after the Civil War and represented the largest and the most complete restoration program of the monument until that moment.

Abstract:
Since 2012, Catalonia has been undergoing a complex political process in which a broad segment of the population has shown itself to be in favor of seceding from the Kingdom of Spain. This phenomenon is not new, given that during the 20th century, the relationship between the two territories was a source of instability and controversy, especially during the Civil War (1936-1939). However, the enormous popular dimension and the massive participation of hundreds of thousands of citizens have represented a remarkable new occurrence in recent times. Based on this situation, the primary aim of the present article is to describe the main reasons for this radicalization in the process of a hypothetical secession in which Catalonia breaks away from Spain. It also seeks to analyze and interpret the role that the media is playing in the so-called “Catalan Process.” Achieving this second objective has been possible thanks to research undertaken by Blanquerna School of Communication and International Relations (Ramon Llull University) based on more than 7,000 journalistic pieces published or broadcasted in more than 100 newspapers, magazines, television stations, radio stations, and cybernewspapers in seven different languages. The most significant conclusion of this study, based on content analysis of the aforementioned sample, is that the media are not being neutral in their coverage of the process. Thus, they have identified to varying degrees with one of the three possible outcomes of the conflict: the maintenance of the unity of Spain, the preferred option of much of national and international media; the independence of Catalonia, the choice of a high percentage of media in Catalonia itself; or a new relationship based on a federal system in Spain that would include Catalonia, the possibility with the least level of support in the three geographical areas studied.

Abstract:
Aims. X Ser is a cataclysmic variable (CV) which erupted as a classical nova in 1903. In this work we use over 100 years of photometry to characterize the long-term light curve of X Ser, with the aim of interpreting the post-nova activity in X Ser in the context of behaviors in other old novae. Methods. This analysis of its long-term optical activity uses the data from the Digital Access to a Sky Century @ Harvard (DASCH), AAVSO, and Catalina Real-time Transient Survey databases, supplemented by the data of other authors. Results. We show that X Ser displays a strong complex activity with the characteristics of various CV types after the return to quiescence from its classical nova outburst. Both nova-like and dwarf nova (DN) features are present. The decaying branches of the individual post-nova outbursts display large mutual similarities and obey the Bailey law for outbursts of DNe. These outbursts of X Ser constitute a uniform group (inside-out outbursts), and their decaying branches can be explained by propagation of cooling front through the accretion disk. In the interpretation, X Ser rapidly transitioned to a thermal-viscous instability regime of the disk, initially only intermittently. The occurrence of the DN outbursts shortly after the end of the nova outburst suggests that the mass transfer rate into the disk was usually not sufficiently high to prevent a thermal-viscous instability of this post-nova. The very long orbital period, and hence large accretion disk of X Ser can contribute to this.

Some authors argue that the Spanish-American states were the result of these struggles, which indicates that in order to fully understand the process of independence it is necessary to consider this geopolitical scenario. The objective of this study is to situate the process of Chilean independence in this scenario, with a particular focus on the dynamics and changing relations experienced between Chilean and British people during that period. We believe that these relations were fundamental to catalyze processes of reflection and discussion about what was or should be the Chilean nation. In order to develop the argument, the work begins by analyzing the geopolitical scenario, then deepening the nature of British-Chilean relations, and finally identifying three stages of such interactions, determined by the changing role of Great Britain in the international arena. Abstract:
Convective activity in Catalonia (northeastern Spain) mainly occurs during summer and autumn, with severe weather occurring 33 days per year on average. In some cases, the storms have unexpected propagation characteristics, likely due to a combination of the complex topography and the thunderstorms’ propagation mechanisms. Partly due to the local nature of the events, numerical weather prediction models are not able to accurately nowcast the complex mesoscale mechanisms (i.e., local influence of topography). This directly impacts the retrieved position and motion of the storms, and consequently, the likely associated storm severity. Although a successful warning system based on lightning and radar observations has been developed, there remains a lack of knowledge of storm dynamics that could lead to forecast improvements. The present study explores the capabilities of the radar network at the Meteorological Service of Catalonia to retrieve dual-Doppler wind fields to study the dynamics of Catalan thunderstorms. A severe thunderstorm that splits and a tornado-producing supercell that is channeled through a valley are used to demonstrate the capabilities of an advanced open source technique that retrieves dynamical variables from C-band operational radars in complex terrain. For the first time in the Iberian Peninsula, complete 3D storm-relative winds are obtained, providing information about the internal dynamics of the storms. This aids in the analyses of the interaction between different storm cells within a system and/or the interaction of the cells with the local topography.

Abstract:
The teaching profession is undergoing significant changes, some of which are imposed by the new paradigm of education. This new context marks the shift from the teachers’ position as ‘knowledge users’ towards the more complex position of ‘knowledge creators’. In this new professional culture adapted to a changing society, teaching as a profession is understood as undergoing a continuous transformation and innovation process, while the professionals in the educational field appear to be research users and research promoters able to think thoroughly about their own professional needs and the new topics arising in their field. There is, therefore, a shift from a passive to an active position, enabling educators to become aware of how complex their field is and to understand that it cannot be acknowledged and managed from outside the social, cultural, historical, philosophical, and psychological contexts shaping it. Taking into consideration the characteristics of the new professional culture, this paper is focused on the development of research skills as one of the teachers’ core skills. The study is framed at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where the Student Perception Research Integration Questionnaire (SPRIQ) of Visser-Wijnveen et al. (2015) was applied to measure students’ perception of research integration in university courses (n=113). Additionally, analysis of the documents on the syllabus of each course of the BA in Primary Education programme was applied to review the research component of initial teacher education curricula. Findings from students’ responses show that they are more consumers than producers of research. We emphasise the importance of student teachers being able to both consume as well as produce research in order to develop professionally.

Abstract:
The present paper identifies the specific features of the conflict between Madrid and Catalonia and its significance for the European Union. The Catalan conflict serves here as an example of the regionalism processes in the European Union. The author defines the conflict as postmodern, which determines the novelty of the research. The research employed integrated scientific methods. The comparative method was used to compare the economic, social, cultural, and political positions and aspects of Catalonia and Spain; the method of actualization was used to describe the situation taking into account the specifics of the region; the method of structural analysis was used to study the content of the conflict. The authors applied the systemic approach since the structure of the Spanish political system is extremely complex. Analytical expert articles, news reports, and video recordings were used as an empirical research base. As a result, some features of the conflict in the postmodern world were revealed and exemplified by the Catalan crisis.

Abstract:
The Chronic Care Program introduced in Catalonia in 2011 focuses on improving the identification and management of complex chronic (CCPs) and advanced chronic patients (ACPs) by implementing an individualized care model. Its first stage is their identification based on chronicity, difficult clinical management (i.e., complexity), and, in ACPs, limited life prognosis. Subsequent stages are individual evaluation and implementation of a shared personalized care plan. This retrospective study, including all CCPs and ACPs identified in Catalonia between 2013 and 2019, was aimed at describing the characteristics and healthcare service utilization among these patients. Data were obtained from an administrative database and included sociodemographic, clinical, and service utilization variables and morbidity-associated risk according to the Adjusted Morbidity Groups (GMA) stratification. During the study period, CCPs’ and ACPs’ prevalence increased and was higher in lower-income populations; most cases were women. CCPs and ACPs had all comorbidities at higher frequencies, higher utilization of healthcare services, and were more frequently at high risk (63% and 71%, respectively) than age-, sex-, and income level-adjusted non-CCP (23%) and non-ACP populations (30%). These results show effective identification of the program’s target population and demonstrate that CCPs and ACPs have a higher burden of multimorbidity and healthcare needs.
