Abstract:
Existing electronic devices will quickly become e-waste when encountering technological iterations, which results in serious environmental and public health problems. Previous circular economy research has mainly focused on the development of new products with long life or recycling discarded products. This study firstly proposes the Green-Extension Design (GED) strategy for developing adaptable accessories that provide existing products with the ability to continue to work in a different context. Competitiveness was selected to evaluate the performance of GED, and three competitiveness components were derived through principal component analysis (PCA). Moreover, AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) was applied to define the weights of the three competitiveness components, and a GED model was established on the basis of production function. Furthermore, the calculation method for each competitiveness component was defined. The GED strategy is aimed at extending the life of existing products, as well as reducing resource waste and environmental pollution. The GED model based on competitiveness components can enable enterprises to design products of high competitiveness and obtain market share as a result.

Abstract:
Strengthening competitiveness is an important factor in facing the growth of international trade in commodity markets, especially for maize as feed commodities. This research aims to: (1) analyze the level of profit and competitiveness of maize farming, (2) investigate farming components affecting competitiveness, and (3) analyze sensitivity level of profit and competitiveness towards the changes. Data were processed using PAM (Policy Analysis Matrix) and sensitivity analysis. The research was conducted on March- May 2018 in Pacitan with 102 maize farmers as sample respondents, collected proportionally. Sensitivity analysis observed four changes, i.e; increase of purchase price, the structure of labor, optimization of maize productivity, and weakening of rupiah exchange rate. Research findings indicated that (1) maize farming in Pacitan does not generate either financial or economic profits, as well as competitiveness, as shown by PCR and DRCR accounting for 1,033 and 1,024 respectively; (2) the component influencing competitive advantages is purchase price and component influencing comparative advantages is rupiah exchange rate; components simultaneously influencing both advantages are structure of labor and maize productivity; (3) the sensitivity analysis proves that the changes of profit are elastic towards the changes of four components indicated by elasticity indicator with a value of more than one. The changes of competitiveness are elastic only for purchase price, but for other components they are inelastic.

Abstract:
Purpose. To analyze the impact of the knowledge component on the level of global competitiveness of the world. Methodology. The methodological basis of the article is the methods and forms of scientific knowledge adopted in domestic science, such as system approaches, comparative and synthesis methods, methods of abstract logical evaluation, methods of detailing, groupings and generalizations, experts evaluations; dynamics series, logic analysis, paired and multiple correlation techniques. Moreover, the Google Trends search engine was used, since the use of this search tool allowed drawing the following conclusions: searches for both concepts in the world and in Ukraine are substantially different: both concepts in the global space, particularly in countries with a high level of competitiveness, are hardly in demand. Findings. Knowledge as an economic category and practical skill permeates all spheres of human life. Currently, knowledge formation is concentrated within TNCs localized in the developed countries of the world (the USA, Singapore, the EU countries, Japan, and others), which is confirmed by the level of competitiveness of the economy of these countries and high ranking of the knowledge component in it. In the overall rating of competitiveness of the influence of the components of the knowledge economy, Ukraine ranks below average, while science now barely crosses the threshold of performing a sociocultural function and begins to perform a cognitive one. Originality. Globalization processes and technological revolution of recent decades have transformed knowledge and intellectual capital into key drivers of competitiveness in the world. We have formed and studied groups of subjective (regional and state policy, which determines the quality of economic and financial processes, as well as the management of the public sector) and objective (geographic, natural and climatic conditions, the degree of sufficiency in raw materials, infrastructure, and others) factors affecting competitiveness of countries. According to the research results, the use of this approach allows for continuous monitoring of the competitiveness level of social and economic indicators in order to identify and eliminate bottlenecks in various levels of state management. Practical value. The authors approach suggested is recommended to be used by scientific institutes, universities, government bodies and services for monitoring socio-economic indicators included in the groups of objective and subjective factors in order to form a holistic understanding and systematic analysis of the influence of the competitiveness of the knowledge component on different aspects of the countrys social and economic life.

Historically, airlines and airports considered air cargo as a by-product. However, by looking for additional sources of revenue, airlines and airports became aware of the potential of air cargo. In this study, the competitiveness of European airports with respect to air cargo will be discussed. The relevant characteristics determining the competitiveness of an airport with respect to air cargo are identified by an extensive literature review and by interviews with industry-specialists. These characteristics can be divided into four different components: territory, air cargo marketplace, airport operations and product differentiation. Each component consists of several factors affecting airport competitiveness for cargo. This study can be used by airports to help assessing and enhancing its air cargo strategy, whereas (potential) shareholders are given an additional instrument to check whether an investment in an airport makes would be viable or not.

Abstract:
Global competition is growing not only on a products/firms level, but also among countries. There are many approaches to interpretation of a concept of the “country competitiveness”, which in particular means “the state of the country in the global market due to the international division of labor, national conditions and factors of production and its ability to compete effectively in world markets”. The competitiveness of countries is determined by many factors and is assessed by different approaches and methods. Some of the best known are the methodologies of the Institute for Management Development (IMD) and the World Economic Forum (WEF). Potential investors are guided by them when making decisions about investing in the economy, financial institutions – when evaluating countries as recipients of capital, etc. The WEF’s Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) is based on 12 groups of over 100 indicators and is regularly adjusted to meet current challenges facing national economies. The latest version – GCI 4.0 – includes: 1. Enabling Environment (1.1. Institutions. 1.2. Infrastructure. 1.3. ICT adoption. 1.4. Macroeconomic stability). 2. Human Capital (2.1. Health. 2.2. Skills). 3. Markets (3.1. Product market. 3.2. Labour market. 3.3. Financial system. 3.4. Market size). 4. Innovation Ecosystem (4.1. Business dynamism. 4.2. Innovation capability). According to GCI 2019, the top five are: Singapore, the United States, Hong Kong, Netherlands and Switzerland, while Ukraine – in the 85th place out of 141 countries. The competitiveness of Ukraine has been deteriorating for the third year in a row. The main regression is in the spheres of: financial systems, healthcare, ICT implementation, macroeconomic stability and innovation opportunities. Considering those 12 components, the multifactorial regression model for Ukraine competitiveness was designed based on aggregated and standardized GCI indicators of 2009– 2017 and 2018–2019. To estimate the parameters of the multifactor regression model, the least squares method and the application “Data Analysis” of the program MS EXCELL were used. The obtained model has been tested. As a result of modeling, it can be seen that – institutions indicator and – indicator of financial market development had the greatest influence on the competitiveness of Ukraine. Thus, they should become the priority areas of the state development and policy.

Abstract:
Increased level of competitivity, continued growth of customers and society demands, and the increasing complexity of products have increased the importance of quality. If the competition could be defined only in few keywords, one of them would surely include the following: quality, innovation and demanding customers. Considering customers who demand quality and competition that responds to such requests, the organization tend to focus increasingly on total quality management - TQM. Although the evolution of the "quality" concept lasts a century, it remains a challenge for all organizations. According to these statements, this paper aims to highlight some aspects of the state of implementation and application of TPM, as a defining component of TQM. The questionnaire method was applied as statistical research method used to a sample of 31 companies in the automotive industry in Romania. The objective behind the survey was to obtain as much information as possible about TPM. The data obtained were statistically processed to more accurately portray the current image of the degree of concern for TPM and how the TPM is approached by companies who responded to the questionnaire.

Abstract:
The competitiveness of an industry is a critical determinant of how well it performs in world markets. The potential for any country's tourism industry to develop will depend substantially on its ability to maintain competitive advantage in its delivery of goods and services to visitors. Competitiveness is a general concept that encompasses price differentials coupled with exchange rate movements, productivity levels of various components of the tourist industry and qualitative factors affecting the attractiveness or otherwise of a destination. Given some evidence on the price sensitivity of the demand for travel, destinations need to monitor their price competitiveness relative to alternate locations. Changing costs are among the most important factors influencing the choice of a destination with prices being an essential component in the overall tourism competitiveness of a destination. The aims of this study are; first, to demonstrate the country’s tourism price competitiveness rank; second, examine the relationship between price competitiveness and tourism demand and also with tourism receipts.

This paper reviews the understanding I have gained from several years of research, and from several more years of ongoing discussions with industry leaders regarding the nature of competitiveness among tourism destinations. This understanding has been captured, in summary form, in the model of Destination Competitiveness/Sustainability (Ritchie and Crouch, 2003). This model contains seven (7) components which we have found to play a major role, from a policy perspective, in determining the competitiveness/sustainability of a tourism destination. In addition to the valuable understanding which these seven components provide from a policy perspective, the specific elements of each the major components provide a more useful/practical guidance to those who are responsible for the ongoing management of a DMO (Destination Management Organization). With this overview in mind, this paper will provide a detailed review and explanation of the model that I have developed with colleague, Dr. Geoffrey I. Crouch of Latrobe University in Melbourne, Australia. Based on previous presentations throughout the world, it has proven very helpful to both academics and practitioners who seek to understand the complex nature of tourism destination competitiveness/sustainability.

Abstract:
The main goal of the paper is to analyse methodical and practical aspects of country (region) competitiveness sustainable development strategy and its implementation means. Such an innovative problem has raised a lot of original tasks and a need for developing corresponding solution methods. Today definitions of development and sustainability often go together analysing global, regional and local processes. Indeed, in this case the definition of competitiveness, as well as the definition of development sustainability require adequate interpretation and quantitative assessment. In the paper, country (region) competitiveness measure is assumed as three‐dimensional indicator, which depends on the fields of activity, dominating in the country, international economic relations and legal, financial, ecological, natural resources and geographical location environment competitiveness. An assumption is made that it is possible to evaluate quantitatively general competitiveness subject to three mentioned components competitiveness, as well as the competitiveness of every component, subject to the competitiveness of its components, based on generally accepted methods or with the help of expert means. Another assumption is made, that there exist quantitative dependencies among components competitiveness increases and amount of costs required to obtain them. As the instrument of the funds accumulated and developed for integrated country competitiveness indicator increase, evaluation and optimal allocation, the adequate for the decision results reliability assessment portfolio theory is selected, which allows assessing reliability of development possibilities under different levels of risk. Success in risk management is supposed to be factor of the highest importance to tackle sustainability at country's competitiveness development. Final structurisation of expert decision‐making support system principles is discussed when applying the system to competitiveness and risk management.

Abstract:
This study investigated the competitiveness index of the fourteen states in Malaysia. It also examined various aspects of competitiveness among states and vital elements that might influence competitiveness by utilizing a three-level hierarchical indicator system encompassing economic, social and environmental factors. An equally weighted index was applied to scrutinize the three dimensions. The index output was based on 24 indicators across six components. The critical components were economic performance, economic structure, marketization and openness, social aspects, domestic security and environmental quality. This study also examined the relationship between the components of competitiveness and economic growth for states in Malaysia by using the panel data estimation approach; a method which utilised data sets for fourteen states over a period extending from 2005 to 2016. Data were then analysed using a panel data regression model. Overall, findings showed that Selangor, where Kuala Lumpur the national capital was situated, was the most competitive state. In 2016, Kuala Lumpur was the best performer in terms of economic performance, social aspects and environmental quality. It was also found that domestic security and environmental quality were significant determinants of economic growth, which had enhanced competitiveness among states in Malaysia. A state’s performance according to the three dimensions varied greatly as there were different factors of specializations for each state. This study has proposed that each state in the federation possessed a significant economic performance, as well as substantial social and environmental development to ensure and sustain their respective state of competitiveness.

Abstract:
Business competitiveness is defined as a company's capacity to participate in the market with an competitive advantage. It can be analyzed using different approaches such as the Resource-Based View (RBV) and measured from a multidimensional perspective. This paper aims to examine the competitiveness of rural enterprises run by a millennial population consisting of undergraduate students and graduates from different faculties of agricultural sciences in Antioquia (Colombia). A total of 1242 emails were sent asking to fill out an online questionnaire, and 432 people responded (34.78 %), with 11.91 % already having a business in operation (148 enterprises). Once the competitiveness index was calculated, a multidimensional statistical analysis was performed to identify differences between regions, economic sectors, status (formal or informal), number of employees, and age of the company. According to the results, service companies in rural areas, enterprises registered at the chamber of commerce, and those with a higher number of employees and longer time in the market exhibit a better competitiveness index. The main limitations, however, are observed in the competitive strategy and marketing components. Since the competitiveness index can have a maximum value of 10, values in the range of 5.68 to 6.79 indicate a medium level of competitiveness and, therefore, imply that the other components of the competitiveness index must be improved to achieve higher levels of competitiveness.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to introduce the concept of consumer-based brand value (CBBV), a change in the perspective of brand-equity and brand value from one where the brand is considered separately from other brands. The purpose of this paper is threefold: highlighting the theoretical difference between brand equity and brand value (Raggio and Leone, 2007); conceptually linking brand equity with brand value and then with brand competitiveness; and demonstrating a straightforward method for scholars and practitioners to measure brand value and then to forecast and simulate brand competitiveness. Design/methodology/approach On a sample of 190 postgraduate students, the authors apply the conjoint analysis and best-worst scaling to illustrate our CBBV model. Following Keller (1993), the authors operationalise brand equity as the outcome of consumers’ internal mental processes, in the form of brand preference, and show how preferences data can be transformed into estimates of brand value in the form of price premium. Finally, the model allows market share simulation based on manipulation of branding and brand features. Findings The paper is more a conceptual piece, highlighting the distinction between brand equity and brand value. It also demonstrates a relatively new measurement technique for transforming measures of brand equity, in the form of brand preferences, into estimates of brand value. The paper used airlines as a service-provider example, but the technique can be applied to many hospitality and service environments. Research limitations/implications The study demonstrates how brand equity drives brand value via consumer utility, and proposes a CBBV–competitiveness chain. The authors convert individual consumer preference data to brand value with subsequent preference-based market segmentation, and estimate competitiveness in two ways: market share ceteris paribus and price premium for brand indifference. They also demonstrate how market simulation can be performed so that it allows forecasting of competitiveness (market share) based on product attributes that affect brand value. Practical implications The CBBV–competitiveness chain constitutes a (new) mindset in the marketing of hospitality, tourism and other services. The study provides a method to measure and test the components of this model and determine brand competitiveness. It used airlines in the example, but the method can be applied to many different settings such as, for example, hotel management group (Starwood, Accor, Intercontinental, Hilton). The authors show how the method allows for benefit-based market segmentation, market-share forecasting and estimation of price premium. Originality value The CBBV chain provides a conceptual link between brand equity, brand value and brand competitiveness. When equity and related constructs are often conceptualised as relative to competition, they are rarely actually measured in that manner. The study shows how brand equity measured as preferences can be transformed into brand value and competitiveness relative to the competition. The combination of conjoint analysis and best–worst scaling is relatively new to the hospitality and services industries. The authors show that these tools can be applied to these industries without depending on costly software or high-priced consultants.

Abstract:
Designing and creating a business model is crucial for a successful firm’s operation in today’s market in a complex and changing environment. A business model is the factor that differentiates one firm from another—it defines the distinctions of the firm, how the firm deals with the competition, the firms’ partnerships, and customer relations. This paper explores the role of the business model in the creation of sustainable competitive advantage. The empirical part of the paper presents the business model of three small companies from the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry in Croatia using the Business Model Canvas. Additionally, business model components were also analyzed using a framework for evaluating a business model. The results of the analysis point to a few crucial components of the business model, on which small ICT firms in Croatia build their competitive advantage by creating significant distinctions of those components. These distinctions are essential for their longevity and sustainability.

Abstract:
The geography of national competitiveness is now charted annually by international indices. However, quite what such indices measure is uncertain as the concept of competitiveness as applied to economies has no clear or agreed definition among scholars. Still less is there any consensus regarding the factors that contribute to national competitiveness. Notwithstanding, governments have incorporated this vague and ill-measured concept both into policy parlance and into public expenditure plans, suggesting that an objective and practical method for identifying national competitiveness is urgently needed. The author reports an exploratory, inductive, approach to identifying the components of competitive advantage of a specimen economy (Hong Kong), by using data from 127 firms operating within it. An inventory of forty-one firm-suggested advantages of Hong Kong is scored, then exploratory factor analysis is used to derive a statistically and conceptually robust index of ten scales representing components of Hong Kong's competitive advantage. Results point to a new, grounded, approach to identifying competitiveness, not just of nations, but of regions and cities too.

Abstract:
Abstract Regional competitiveness is considered to be an alternative basis for the determination of regional interventions. However, the composite competitiveness indicator is quite sensitive to the weights of sub-indicators, no matter what methodology is being used. To avoid this uncertainty in the determination of regional interventions, we proposed a new non-compensatory resonance approach that is focused on the hierarchical coincidence between weaknesses of NUTS 1 and NUTS 2 regions measuring the extensive and intensive components of competitiveness. Such a coincidence, being perceived as a resonance effect, is supposed to increase the effectiveness of interventions triggering synergetic effects and stirring up local regional potentials. The components of competitiveness are obtained through synthesising DEA methodology and Hellwig’s index, correspondingly focusing on the measurement of technical efficiency and resource level. In analysing Ukrainian regions, no correlation between resonance interventions and the composite competitiveness indicator or GDP per capita was found, pointing toward a completely different direction in resonance approach. In western Ukraine, the congestion of six NUTS 2 regions was defined as a homogeneous area of analogous resonance interventions focused on improving business efficiency.

Abstract:
This paper aims to investigate the impact of intellectual capital (IC) and its components on financial competitiveness and green innovation performance. The data are collected from renewable energy companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges during 2013–2018. The modified Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (MVAIC) model is applied as a proxy for IC efficiency, an index system is constructed to systematically measure financial competitiveness, and green innovation performance is measured by the total number of green patents, the number of green invention patents, and the number of green noninvention patents. The empirical results show that IC has an inverted U-shaped relationship with financial competitiveness and no impact on green innovation performance. Regarding IC components, human capital (HC), structural capital, and relational capital positively affect financial competitiveness. HC has a negative impact on green patents, while innovation capital has a positive impact on green invention patents. Physical capital is the main driving force of green innovation performance. This study will help managers to reasonably manage their IC resources to strengthen financial competitiveness and achieve green development.

Abstract:
Theoretical and methodological principles of medical institution competitiveness potential development management are explored in the article. The concept of medical institution competitiveness is considered as a complex, step-by-step, multifaceted, dynamic process involving the formation and implementation of management decisions and measures to sustainably increase competitiveness and dynamically increase competitive advantages and competencies of the medical institution on an innovative basis. It was found that the following components of the theoretical basis of medical institution competitiveness potential development management are the most widely used and studied among domestic scientists and practitioners: factors of competitiveness; the nature of the factors of influence; vectors, directions of competitiveness development and quality of medical services; principles, functions and patterns of development of competitiveness of medical institutions and services, etc. Therefore, it was determined that the delineation of these components is extremely important to consider in the process of developing a system of measures to increase the competitiveness of any medical institution, which will contribute to their efficiency and relevance. In the current Ukrainian and foreign publications, the problems of quantitative assessment of the level of medical institution competitiveness are covered quite widely. In these works, researchers argue the use of different approaches to calculate competitiveness indicators; advantages and disadvantages of certain methodological approaches; the need to take into account various factors in assessing the level of medical institution competitiveness etc. Various ways of applying the method of expert assessments in determining the level of competitiveness of organizations are proposed. The use of this method can often reduce the reliability and objectivity of research results. In general, the assessment of the level of competitiveness is currently carried out taking into account the influence of market factors, which usually give an incomplete description of the organization under study. Therefore, in order to obtain reliable results of competitiveness assessment, it is necessary to apply a system of complex factors that take into account the specifics of not only domestic medical organizations, but also medical services.

According to the concept of authenticity, competitiveness of a tourist destination depends on the complex interdependence of numerous destination components and their interaction with the visitors of the destination. The global standard for measuring competitiveness of countries is the TTC Index of the World Economic Forum, the ranking list where Serbia holds a relatively weak position. This position has been cyclically improving and deteriorating, and opposite trends of indicators within individual sub-indices also contribute to this, suggesting that activities are uncoordinated. The Tourism Development Strategy of Serbia (TDS), as an umbrella document to coordinate efforts to develop and improve the competitiveness of Serbian tourism, identifies priority products and destinations in Serbia. Such established priorities should contribute both to the coordination among key stakeholders and, consequently, to competitiveness in the international market. The analysis conducted in this paper indicates that TDS has only partially identified the products and destinations chosen by visitors.

The competitiveness of an educational organization (like any other organization) is determined by the competitiveness of its personnel, and the competitiveness of personnel largely depends on the motivation of personnel to work, therefore, the article focuses on the factors that affect the competitiveness of an educational organization as a whole and in particular on the motivation of one of the categories of the main personnel of an educational organization (teaching staff) as a factor of increasing the competitiveness of an educational organization. The results of the research described in the article allow us to conclude that the constant study/monitoring of factors affecting the competitiveness of an educational organization is an important component of improving its competitiveness, which determines the need for further research and development in this area.
