Full textThe bringing into light of misconducts, observed within private and public organisations alike, is only one of the factors which has in recent decades led to a questioning of their social and ethical roles. The implementation of mechanisms which aim to sustain ethics within the workplace thus shaped institutionalisation of ethics efforts. However, a great confusion persists – within the public, managerial and even theoretical discourse – as to the social regulation mode that is ethics. Consequently, initiatives deployed under this labelling often pursue very different aims. In parallel, the human resources function, as well as its professionals (HRP), is subjected to a severe performance evaluation. Notably the role of these professionals, as guardians of the social contract uniting employees to the organisation, is often called into question. It is in this context that this thesis aims to explore the form that organisational ethics take as well as the links which may be established between the institutionalisation of ethics and the human resources function. To achieve this, two large-size Quebec organisations (N=2) are studied. In order to contrast the organisational discourse to that of the HRPs, a documentary analysis is completed as well as thirty-five (N=35) semi-directed HRP interviews. The results suggest that in the absence of formalisation, informal practices – and even a form of coregulation – emerge to mitigate the absence or lack of sense and direction. However, factors such as the political and hierarchical nature of the organisation and of some of the decisions can make these, as well as institutionalisation efforts, deviate. Similarly, it is posited that the place that is granted to ethics within a given workplace cannot be evaluated by the sole concept of ethical infrastructure. Indeed, this concept must be complemented by the taking into consideration of the elements of the HR infrastructure which pertain to ethics. Moreover, in order to favour an optimal development of ethical competence – at both the individual and organisational levels –, infrastructures would benefit from the incorporation of moral dimensions such as the three ethics (care, justice, critique). This thesis thus gives shape to the concept of organisational framework in support of ethics as well as to a model of the institutionalisation process of ethics within organisations.

Full textIn Quebec, wastewaters are mostly treated with aerated facultative lagoons. Since the adoption of the Regulation respecting municipal wastewater treatment works, many municipalities need to upgrade and improve their wastewater treatment station to comply with the new requirements, which are a concentration of suspended solids (SS) less than or equal to 25 mg/L and a concentration of the 5-day carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD5) less than or equal to 25 mg/L. Moreover, many stations have arrived at the end of their operating life expectancy and other stations have even exceeded their organic loads or flowrate loads. One solution that would help these municipalities would be to improve these stations with the new KAMAKMC technology developed by Bionest. This new technology incorporates two reactors containing BIONEST® inert media placed directly in a lagoon, between three clarification zones. At this time, there is a lack of technical data to ensure a good understanding of the KAMAKMC system. The aim of the present study is to characterize sludge accumulations in this new technology, especially in the clarification zones. Tests were conducted with a KAMAKMC system installed in the first third of an aerated lagoon belonging to the municipality of Grandes-Piles, in province of Québec. Between May 2016 and May 2017, measurements of sludge accumulations are taken monthly with a sludge judge in the clarification zones. To compare these measurements, sonar testing is taken 3 times during the year (April and October 2016 and May 2017). Sludge samples are taken during the year to measure total suspended solids (TSS) and volatile suspended solids (VSS). Moreover, gas sampling equipment sits over the lagoon to retrieve samples during the summer months of 2016, to allow a better characterization of anaerobic digestion in the zones. Water temperature during this follow up was between 2°C and 22°C. The sludge accumulation rate in the second and the third clarification zones were 0,05m3y -1hab-1 et de 0,06m3y -1hab-1 . In fact, the first clarification zone had a sludge accumulation rate of 0. This indicates that aeration in the first zone was high, restraining the sludge accumulation to a value of 0,6m and that primary solids were probably displaced in the next two clarification zone due to excessive aeration. The VSS/TSS ratio indicates that in cold temperature, the ratio was constant in every zone, while during the summer months a lower ratio was observed. Values of 18 LCH4m-2d -1 and 4 LCH4m2d -1 in Cl2 and Cl3 were found with the gas collector on the lagoon. Average methane concentrations in the gas collector were 62,8% and 1,4% of CO2. The low percentage of CO2 might be caused by the gas solubilization in the water.

Full textMany economic and climatic disruptions have influenced the Quebec dairy farms between 2000 and 2010. However, the incidence of these disruptions did not have the same effect on the financial health of the farms, as demonstrated by the disparity shown in their financial results. In order to obtain a better understanding of the presence of heterogeneity, the strategic behavior of the most efficient and the less efficient producers has been evaluated from two series of analysis, performed on eleven management strategies. The results showed that the producers of the head subgroup obtained better security margin, labour organization, dairy productivity and valorization of the fodder than the producers of the tail subgroup, regardless of the economic and climatic situation. It appears then, that their production structure and their strategic planning are more economically efficient and more capable of restraining the negative effects of disruptions.

Full textThe focus of this doctoral thesis is on Inuit customary adoption in Nunavik. The main objective is to study the association between customary adoption practices and child behavioral problems at school-age. In Nunavik, one-third of Inuit children are adopted according to customary adoption practices. The first article describe the cultural context and the main characteristics of Inuit customary adoption. Taking place at birth, customary adoption is considered as the donation of a child to a close kin, usually the parent’s sibling or the child’s grandparent. Contrary to closed adoptions which is in standard legal use in southern Canada and in the USA, customary adoption is not confidential and biological ties are not severed. The actual information on the development of Inuit adopted children come from a limited body of studies on Inuit children followed by youth protection services. Using data from a prospective longitudinal study conducted in Nunavik, this thesis included a sample of 46 adopted and 231 non-adopted children followed from birth to school age. Prenatal and familial informations were collected and behavioral problems were assessed using the Teacher Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist. The second article compare adopted and non-adopted children on prenatal and familial characteristics and examine the actual extent of the increase in the number of behavior problems seen in Inuit children adopted in accordance with Inuit customs. Adoption per se is not associated with higher rate of behavioral problems at school age but adopted and non-adopted Inuit children were raised in significantly distinct family environments at school-age. Given such differences, the last article identified the prenatal and familial risk factors associated with attention problems and externalizing behaviors in a subsample of Inuit adopted children (n=46). Attention and externalizing behaviors were better explained by familial variables at school age than by prenatal variables. These results contrast significantly with previous domestic and international adoption studies conducted with non-indigenous children. Similarities and differences are discuss in this thesis and hypotheses to explain discrepancies are drawn. This study contribute to extend the scope of knowledge on Inuit customary adoption.

Full textOur study focuses on describing and understanding the negotiation of meaning (Wenger, 2005) as it unfolded among members of a team from the Ministère de l'Éducation, des loisirs et du sport (MELS), who adopted the community of practice model of professional development. This community was in charge of implementing the action plan for improving the quality of French. It provided training and support for teachers of primary- and secondary-school French in Quebec. The data-gathering process took place over a period of four years. Ethnography-based methodology emphasized distance participant observation, meaning being present while the community carried out its work, and note-taking. An analysis of the community’s working documents (including the written record of an electronic forum), the conducting of interviews, and the administering of a survey were the other elements that completed the data-gathering process used throughout. A cross-sectional analysis of the data gathered made it possible to sort out and highlight more clearly the key processes and point to the specific purposes that the negotiation of meaning espoused in context. We then drew from this analysis the components of the professional-development program that the community devoted its energies to constructing.

Growing research interest in fatherhood, since the 1980s, has helped identify several potential determinants of father involvement. However, few attempts have been made to understand the process through which men become fathers, and how different factors interact to predict father involvement. In this respect, the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991), which postulates that an individual’s behavior is determined by his intention with regards to the target behavior, itself predicted by his attitudes, perceived norms and behavioral control over this behavior, constitutes an interesting and novel way of explaining the involvement of new fathers in childcare. With this premise, 300 heterosexual couples expecting their first child completed prenatal and postnatal questionnaires assessing the different components of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Results suggest that the more future fathers endorse biological essentialist beliefs and perceive obstacles to their involvement in their environment, the less they intend to participate in childcare. Additionally, it appears that fathers’ intentions to be involved in childcare tasks, prior to the birth of their first child, contribute to the prediction of their postnatal behaviors. Moreover, mothers’ postnatal variables are also associated with fathers’ involvement behaviors, particularly mothers’ biological essentialist beliefs, which also interact significantly with fathers’ prenatal intentions to predict father involvement. Weaker essentialist beliefs in mothers are associated with greater father involvement, particularly for fathers with lower prenatal intentions regarding childcare involvement. To understand fathers’ involvement behaviors in two-parent families, it is thus necessary to take into account men’s prenatal beliefs and expectations as well as their interaction with those of mothers. Future parents’ essentialist beliefs regarding the childcare competence of men and women appears to be a promising intervention target to facilitate greater paternal involvement.

Full textSince the creation of a welfare state at the end of World War II, going through the rationalization trends of the 80's and more recently the emergence of technological innovation and new forms of knowledge production and dissemination, the university has been at the center of numerous debates concerning its mission and its role within society. In response to these discussions and questions reflecting the social and economic environment in which this institution operates, the university was led to introduce changes in the forms of knowledge production as well as the status and role of its main internal (administrators, academics, students) and external (governments, companies) stakeholders in the process of these changes. The goal for the university is to put itself in a leading position in societies in which economic performance is increasingly dependent on knowledge and education. However, little research has focused on reporting, through an integrated approach based on macro, meso and micro levels of analysis, the main mutations that have marked and mark even more the university nowadays. Trying to remedy this weakness, this thesis aims to deal with the main transformations the institution has experienced, on a triple plan that integrates the context, content and process of change. The first article of this thesis aims to determine whether the university as a pluralist organization is able to evolve towards a post-bureaucratic configuration. By a discourse analysis of four meta-actors of three key moments of change that marked the Québec university, this article wishes to highlight that the university has evolved by sedimentation in its configuration, based on a fragile consensus on a difficult cohabitation between social democratic values versus rationalization ones. In this context, the evolution towards a postbureaucratic configuration would require actions in response to this strategic ambiguity, particularly those initiated by teachers and administrators. It would also require as well a new actor that is the industry, without however challenging the already existing consensus. The second article of this thesis attempts to account for the way in which academic identity is defined in reaction to a neo-liberal orientation of the university. Based on a meta-synthesis of 19 qualitative and empirical articles that investigated the impacts of New Public Management and managerialism on the identity of the members of the academic staff of universities, this article tries to highlight how these individuals define / redefine their identity V in light of institutional work and the type of agency mobilized by these actors. Academics then would particularly benefit from developing a projective agency and diversifying their places of support in order to make their managerial identity experience less difficult. Finally, the third chapter of this thesis seeks to make an inventory of the forms of student engagement in the face of the growing emergence of a movement. Based on a general inductive analysis, this chapter attempts to understand better the individual experience of student engagement. Thus, it seeks to give an account of the way in which the individual student representative engages and acts within his engagement in a context of emergent change. Student representatives do not seem to meet in their engagement, as evidenced by the grassroots leadership activities that are mobilized by these individuals in response to the emergence of change.
Kercuku, Hava. "Comportements spatio-temporels des touristes dans la région de Québec." Doctoral thesis, Université Laval, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/21331.
Full textThe urban tourism is an important factor for the economic and spatial development of many cities in the contemporary world. However, new destinations and new tourists practices emerges continually. The offers of destinations and activities are rapidly growth and diversify, making also much more competitive the urban tourism market. These changes are stimulated, for a big part, by tourist behaviour which is looking for new experiences, more quickly and more personalised choices. The tourist behaviour becomes more complex and less predicable. The Quebec City and area constitute a typical urban destination, combining culture, history and nature activities. Its tourism infrastructures respond to new tourist’s practices and are in accord with the best international standards. But, in despite of good performances the region is confronted with the competition of new destinations as well as with the necessity to have a better equilibration between its different geographical areas and activities practiced. This equilibration will increase it’s competitively in the Canadian market by projecting a more attractive image to its potential tourists and visitors. In the aim to better understand the relation between City and tourism we have analyse the spatiotemporal behaviour of Canadian and international tourists who had visits the region during 1998-2003 period. The data used provide from the Canadian and International Travel Surveys, carried out from 1998 to 2002 by Statistic Canada, as well as from a survey on tourist’s behaviour, carried out in 2003, by Quebec City and Area office of Tourism. The results obtained show that contrary to our starting assumption, the tourism attractivity of the region does not result so much from the triad “history/culture - business/congress - outdoor” but it is especially on “history/culture - shopping - outdoor” activities. The inner city remains always very attractive for the visitors but it is also complemented by a new tourist area, increasingly attended, which is the “green crown” surrounding the city. Lastly, the results obtained make it possible to raise our knowledge in particular with regard to the destination choice and its determinants factors; the importance of intra-regional heterogeneity in the choice of place of stay and the lodging mode; as well as the relation between the tourist’s socio-economic profile and the spatio-temporal factors influencing the choice of activities practised during the stay.

Full textThe aim of this doctoral thesis is to provide a better understanding of the effects of prenatal cigarette smoke exposure (PCSE) and of the combined effects between PCSE and catecholaminergic, serotonergic and metabolic genes on externalizing behaviours at school age in a sample of Inuit children from Nunavik. The association between PCSE and externalizing behaviours is first explored in a sample of children (N = 271) at 11 years of age who took part in a prospective study. Interactions between PCSE, lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg), two contaminants associated with behavioral problems, were also explored. Analysis of PCSE effects (Article 1) suggests that PCSE is associated with externalizing behaviours and with attention problems on the Teacher Report Form (TRF), and PCSE is also associated with a higher prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) assessed on the Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBD). No interactions were found with contaminants. Then, the analysis of the combined effects between PCSE and catecholaminergic, serotonergic, and metabolic genetic polymorphisms (Article 2) suggests an interaction between PCSE and genotypes CC/TC of the cytochrome P-450 1A1 (CYP1A1) gene. Unexposed children with genotypes CC or TC have significantly lower scores for externalizing behaviours. Combination of an environment without PCSE and with genotypes CC/TC seems to offer protection regarding the development of externalizing problems. These results partly support the differential susceptibility model and reject the diathese stress model. This thesis suggests that PCSE is a risk factor in the development of externalizing problems and those genetic variations can modify this relation. Results indicate the importance of including different theoretical frameworks in the investigation of gene-environment interactions.

Full textThe literature generally agrees that ectoparasite Varroa destructor is the most important threat to the honey bee (Apis mellifera). Currently, varroa is controlled primarily by acaricide treatments that present a risk of contamination of hive products and the environment. In some colonies of A. mellifera is a hygienic behavior that reduces varroa mite infestation, VSH "Varroa Sensitive Hygiene", and is associated with a decrease in the reproduction of varroa mites in bee brood, "Supressed Mite Reproduction" (SMR). Identifying the genomic architecture that regulates this resistance to varroa mites would help to accelerate its evolution in all honeybee populations and reduce the damage caused by the parasite. This master’s project aimed to shed light on the relationship between the genome and this quantitative resistance phenotype by a genome-wide association study on a sample of A. mellifera colonies taken from five different sites across Quebec. Genotyping sequencing (GBS) technology has been used to identify thousands of markers on the whole genome scale from single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Then the association of the markers with the SMR phenotype was tested with statistical models: the mixed linear model (MLM) and the mixed linear multi-locus model (MLMM) with bioinformatic tools. This project joins other attempts to produce more effective breeding tools for beekeepers to control varroosis.

Cross-hole testing allowed to obtain Young's modulus ranging from 1300 to 2600 MPa. Consolidated-undrained triaxial monotonic testing, yielded Young's modulus Emax ranging between 290 MPa and 6000 MPa, notably as a function of the amount of gravel particles present in the samples. ZQ3 samples Young modulus were similar to those obtained using the cross-hole testing. In addition, the Poisson's ratio of these samples were regularly zero. During cyclic triaxial testing, contraction was followed by dilation when the samples reached a phase transformation point and the stress path intersected the stress path of a monotonically loaded sample having the same effective consolidation stress. keywords: phase transformation, cyclic behaviour, glacial till, Young's modulus, shear wave velocity, Poisson's ratio.

Full textThis M.Sc thesis presents the results of a study of the behaviour of the sensitive Beauharnois clay under monotonic and cyclic loading. This study is a part of a research project for the dynamic characterizations of sea Champlain clay. A geotechnical investigation was carried out at Beauharnois site with performing several in situ tests and sampling clay by using high quality sampler. A laboratory testing program was carried out in order to do a geotechnical characterization of the soil and to study the behaviour under monotonic and cyclic loading. The mechanical behaviour was studied by triaxial tests and simple shear tests. The limit state curve and critical state line of the clay were determined by undrained triaxial tests. The cyclic tests were used to determine the cyclic résistance of the soil and also to understand the degradation process of strength of the soil and the mechanisms of failure under these loading. The results show that the soil can perform a cyclic softening with large déformations during a cyclic stress. The comparison of the results of this study with other studies on sea Champlain Sea clay show that there is the same behaviour under cyclic loading.

Full textThis doctoral research aims to document the perceptions of students with emotional and behavioral difficulties (EBD) regarding the effectiveness of classroom management practices used by teachers and to contrast them according to their personal characteristics and behavioral profiles. It also aims to describe the perceived influence of classroom management practices on the educational experience of these students and to document their perceptions regarding accessibility to the regular class and the issues relating to their reintegration into mainstream secondary school. Individual interviews were conducted with fourteen EBD students enrolled in special education classes in secondary school in Quebec. The participants' testimonies were subjected to thematic analyzes by predefined categorization from the theoretical models selected. The results offers an unprecedented perspective on classroom management and reveal a vast inventory of practices perceived effective by participants to manage the class, including: 1) resource management: arranging different spaces, assigning places, using proprioceptive objects; 2) establishing clear expectations: establishing classroom rules with the students, transmitting precise instructions, having routines; 3) developing positive relationships: having respectful and supportive relationships, understanding and listening without judging, letting yourself be known; 4) obtaining attention and maintaining commitment: helping students, giving them a taste for doing tasks, being silent before starting and 5) managing misconduct: reinforcing, warning, announce the consequences, use classroom withdrawal in an educational manner. The results also reveal that the type of school attended and the attitudes towards it particularly influence participants' perceptions. Subsequently, the results show that classroom management practices are a significant determinant of the participants' educational experience. In this regard, practices aimed at developing positive relationships are those that most positively influence the school experience while those aimed at punishing and excluding are those that influence it most negatively. In addition, the way teachers manage their class is associated with the way students choose to behave, as well as their academic background, performance and well-being at school. Finally, the results provide a better understanding of participants' perceptions of the mainstream classroom and its accessibility. In this regard, they demonstrate their intention and their ability to return to the regular class and identify several personal, environmental and behavioral issues, as they see and experience them. Innovative on a social and scientific level, this thesis adds a major dimension to our understanding of effective classroom management practices, their influence on the school experience and issues related to the reintegration of EBD students into mainstream education. It offers, on the one hand, an alternative point of view to teachers (and other school staff) and, on the other hand, a perspective complementary to previous research in the field. Thus, the vast inventory of classroom management practices perceived effective by EBD students will track teachers on the practices to favor in order to face the daily challenge of classroom management by convincing them of the importance of using those recommended by students. In addition, the many levers and barriers to reintegration identified by EBD students will have to be taken into account in order to promote their full participation and their optimal development in ordinary classroom. Finally, the voice of EBD students has the real potential to contribute to the enhancement of their mainstream education, to the improvement of their experience at school, to the identification of the factors that affect their well-being and their success as well as educating teachers about effective practices to manage the classroom and difficult behaviors.

Full textUntil now, the ecology of bats in boreal forest was not studied in Quebec. Little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) and northern long-eared bats (Myotis septentrionalis) roost in trees during summer and might be affected by logging in boreal forest. My first objective was to find in the literature the main variables implicated in roost selection by cavity-roosting bats in North America. My second objective was to find the variables implicated in roost selection by Myotis species in a managed boreal forest. My third objective was to determine the spatial distribution and proportion of potential roosting habitats over the southern part of the Laurentian Highlands. My quantitative synthesis was based on 34 studies performed in North America. Tree diameter appeared to be a key element to consider in roost selection by cavity-roosting bats in North America, especially in Nordic latitudes. I monitored by telemetry 22 male bats captured in various sectors of the Montmorency forest (Quebec, Canada). I compared trees and stands selected by bats to random points to evaluate roost selection. Snags with an intermediate decay stage were mainly selected. Tree diameter and tree height, canopy opening and snag density were the most important variables to consider in the eastern balsam fir (Abies balsamea)-paper birch (Betula papyrifera) forest of Quebec. I used these results to generate roosting habitat suitability maps of Myotis species over the southern part of the Laurentian Highlands. Summits seemed to have a low potential for Myotis species. The balsam fir-white birch forest appeared more suitable for the northern long-eared bat, compared to the little brown bat. Promoting or maintaining large diameter trees and vegetation clusters of 0.1 hectares containing a minimum of 10 snags should preserve roosts of Myotis species in the managed boreal forest of Quebec. Increase the proportion of residual patches of old-growth forest should preserve suitable roosting habitats for Myotis species over the southern part of the Laurentian Highlands.

Full textThe resistance of Romaine 3 till was studied under cyclic loading using a new cyclic simple shear apparatus. The tests were carried out at different compaction water contents (dry and wet sides of Proctor optimum) and at different cyclic shear stress levels. It was found that ten times more cycles were needed for samples compacted on the dry side of optimum to reach failure than for samples compacted on the wet side of optimum. It was also found that the tests carried out at low cyclic stress ratio took ten times more cycles to reach failure then tests carried out at high cyclic stress ratios. The presented research project is part of the NSERC – Hydro-Québec Industrial Research Chair in life cycle optimisation for embankment dams.

Full textObesity and insulin resistance are associated with mood disorders and elevated plasma concentrations of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs: isoleucine, leucine and valine), and aromatic amino acids (AAAs: phenylalanine and tyrosine). Because AAAs are precursors of key neurotransmitters and their uptake into the brain is competitive with respect to the uptake of BCAAs via their transport through the same carrier, we explored the relationship between metabolomic biomarkers (BCAAs and AAAs) and behavioral problems among young Inuit from Nunavik. The current analysis includes 141 youth who participated in the Nunavik Child Development Study baseline (2005-2010) and adolescent follow-up (2013-2015). BCAA and AAA plasma concentrations were measured at baseline and categorised in tertiles of the ratio of BCAAs to AAAs (BCAA/AAA). Behavioral problems were assessed during adolescence with the Youth Self-Report (YSR) from the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). The relationship between tertiles of BCAA/AAA and mean scores of YSR syndromes was assessed with general linear models. We noted a trend toward a higher mean scores of internalizing problems (Ptrend=0.05) and somatic complaints (Ptrend=0.01) syndromes with higher BCAA/AAA ratio. No statistically-significant relationship was noted for externalizing and attention problems scores. We observed higher (Ptrend < 0.05) internalizing problems and somatic complaints syndrome scores with a higher ratio of BCAA/AAA among normal weight participants, but not among overweight or obese. Our results suggest that an elevated BCAA/AAA ratio is associated with behavioral problems among youth, mainly internalizing problems.

Full textThis master's dissertation presents the results of a study measuring the impact of the in-service training program Regard9 on collective efficacy beliefs regarding the prevention and management of students’ behavioral difficulties. This study also intended to identify contextual factors that foster and restrain de development of the collective efficacy beliefs. Named “Regard9”, the in-service training program took place in one elementary school of Québec City, and lasted two years (2014 to 2016). The program “Regard 9” included 5 training workshops of three hours each as well as continuous professional support. The program was built upon evidence-based practices oriented toward the prevention and management of behavioral difficulties, the conditions of effectiveness of professional development activities, and the needs expressed by the school staff. The effects of the program Regard9 were assessed using a pre-experimental design with one-group pretest (autumn 2014) and posttest (spring 2016) measure. Paired t-test and non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed significant positive effect of the program on collective efficacy beliefs of the participants (n = 24). The effect size also suggests that the program can produce substantial effects on the development of collective efficacy beliefs in an educational context. The results show various contextual factors that foster and restrain the development of collective efficacy beliefs. Implications for further research and practice are discussed.
