Abstract:
Ritual landscapes were integral to Inca imperial expansion, both as a medium for and as a product of the interaction between the Inca state and regional and local polities. The incorporation of peoples and lands into the Inca Empire entailed complex dealings with local and regional huacas, together with the co-optation and modification of local elite lineages, corporate origins, and histories. Late Horizon ritual landscapes were thus emergent phenomena, constructed over time through processes of negotiation and reconfiguration between the Inca and other peoples. I refer to these negotiated landscapes as “local-imperial,” and explore these interactive processes through archaeological and ethnohistorical data from Cuzco, Pachacamac, Huamachuco, and Huarochirí. Inasmuch as local-imperial ritual landscapes were composite entities described in this article, viewing these different forms of evidence together clarifies our image of the Inca expansion as the work of physical, social, and symbolic-semiotic mastery.

The Global State of Democracy is a biennial report that aims to provide policymakers with an evidence-based analysis of the state of global democracy, supported by the Global State of Democracy Indices (GSoD Indices), in order to inform policy interventions and identify problem-solving approaches to trends affecting the quality of democracy around the world. The second edition of the report provides a health check of democracy and an overview of the current global and regional democracy landscape. This document presents revised and updated information about all the variables included in the GSoD indices data set that enabled the construction of Version 4 of the GSoD Indices, which depicts democratic trends at the country, regional and global levels across a broad range of different attributes of democracy in the period 1975–2019. The data underlying the GSoD Indices is based on a total of 116 indicators developed by various scholars and organizations using different types of source, including expert surveys, standards-based coding by research groups and analysts, observational data and composite measures.

Abstract:
Algorithmic power and politics stems in part from how algorithms acquire the capacity to disturb and to compose new sensibilities as part of situated practices, particularly in terms of how they become invested with certain political and moral capacities. Looking at how algorithms materialize in the institutional setting of the news media, the chapter considers how algorithms are made to matter. Based on field observations and 20 interviews with digital editors and managers at leading Scandinavian news organizations the chapter explores how institutional actors are responding to the proliferation of data and algorithms. The analysis shows how, on the one hand, news organizations feel the pressure to reorient their practices toward the new algorithmic logic governing the media landscape at large. On the other hand, algorithms work to disturb and question established boundaries and norms of what journalism is and ought to be.

Worldwide Women Writers in Paris brings together a variety of authors who are a part of a phenomenon of new writing by women in French. These individuals, all eighteen of whom hail from outside the hexagonal borders of France, have chosen to take up residence in the French capital and compose literary works in French. Whether they were born in Algeria, Hungary, India, Mauritius, South Korea, or elsewhere, these women writers are contributing to a transformation in the Francophone literary landscape through stylistic and thematic innovations that have emerged in part from their differing experiences and varying itineraries. Despite their divergences, these women have much in common, especially when it comes to the way they are continually perceived as foreigners in the location they have adopted as home. Even those who enjoy the greatest international renown for their publications in French are constantly reminded within France that they are not originally from this nation, and this emphasis on their foreign origins may have contributed to keeping them at a remove from the recognition they deserve in French letters. It is, however, becoming more difficult to ignore a growing collective corpus revealing ever greater creativity and wielding ever more influence. These authors are not content simply to compose complicated texts, but they are also actively involved in the formulation of complex publishing profiles that reveal movement and diversity. This result is nothing less than a literary revolution, and it is time to celebrate it.

Abstract:
During the twentieth century, men and women across Ireland picked up cameras, photographing days out at the beach, composing views of Ireland’s cities and countryside, and recording political events as they witnessed them. Indeed, while foreign photographers often focused on the image of Ireland as a bucolic rural landscape, Irish photographers—snapshotter and professional alike—were creating and curating photographs of Ireland which revealed more complex and diverse images of Ireland. Snapshot Stories explores these stories. It examines a diverse array of photographic sources, including family photograph albums, studio portraits, and the work of photography clubs and community photography initiatives, alongside the output of those who took their cameras into the streets to record violence and poverty. It shows how Irish men and women used photography in order to explore their sense of self and society, and examines how we can use these images to fill in the details of Ireland’s social history. Through exploring this rich array of sources, it asks what it means to see—to look, to gaze, to glance—in modern Ireland, and explores how conflicts regarding vision and visuality have repeatedly been at the centre of Irish life.
