Abstract:
The vibration damping property of plant fibres composites is of practical interest for commercial applications of biobased and eco-composites. Damping behaviour has been observed by experimentation and exploited in the marketing of sporting equipment but the origins of this behaviour have so far been only based on conjectures. In this thesis, the damping capacity of plant fibre composites was attributed to their chemical composition and the reversible interactions enabled by the breaking and reforming of hydrogen bonds under stress. The approach to explaining the mechanisms started with the ch

The aim of the work presented in this thesis was to investigate different mechanical and chemical pre-treatments which can dramatically change the properties of native cellulose and add alternative routes to structure formation. Fully amorphous samples recrystallised to the more thermodynamically stable type II polymorphic crystal structure. Flash differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which allows thermal transitions t

Wheat gluten, wheat gliadin, and corn zein agricultural proteins were evaluated as multifunctional additives that: (1) provided reinforcement, (2) improved thermal stability, and (3) lowered the cost of polymer composites. Wheat proteins were utilized in two polymer matrices: poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and synthetic cis-1,4-polyisoprene rubber (IR). The proteins were hydrolyzed and dispersed in the polymer matrix, where they cooperatively self-assembled into nanostructures called amyloids. Amyloids have the potential for high rigidity and stability due to high β-sheet content. In Chapter II,

Abstract:
Plant fibres, perceived as environmentally sustainable substitutes to E-glass, are increasingly being employed as reinforcements in polymer matrix composites. However, despite the promising technical properties of cellulose-based fibres and the historic use of plant fibre composites (PFRPs) in load-bearing components, the industrial uptake of PFRPs in structural applications has been limited. In developing PFRPs whose mechanical properties are well-characterised, optimised and well-predicted, this thesis addresses the question: Can PFRPs replace E-glass composites (GFRPs) in structural applica
