This thesis improves our insight towards the effects of using biodiesels on the particulate matter emission of diesel engines and contributes to our understanding of their potential adverse health effects. The novelty of this project is the use of biodiesel fuel with controlled chemical composition that enables us to relate changes of physiochemical properties of particles to specific properties of the biodiesel. For the first time, the possibility of a correlation of the volatility and the Reactive Oxygen Species concentration of the particles is investigated versus the saturation, oxygen con

Abstract:
N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) are glutamate-gated ionotropic receptors. When activated, NMDARs let extracellular sodium and calcium ions enter neurons. This calcium influx, depending on its duration, intensity and the presence of nearby signalling proteins can signal to synaptic plasticity. Additionally, physiological NMDAR activity promotes pro-survival cascades and gene transcription, whereas both lack of activation and overactivation of these receptors trigger pro-death signals. Several neurodegenerative pathologies such as stroke/ischemia and Alzheimer’s disease are thought to in

Its main application is essentially catalyze the hydrolysis of triglycerides. However, in micro-aqueous environments these enzymes have the ability to catalyze the reverse reaction of esterification. These enzymes do not require cofactors, have relatively low cost, are regioespecific, enantioselectives and may act on a broad range of temperature and pH. Abstract:
To evaluate the relative efficacy of plant sterols (PS) esterified with the fatty acids from fish oil (PS-FO), olive oil (PS-OO) and sunflower oil (PS-SO) on blood lipid and PS concentrations, 21 hyperlipidemic subjects were randomly assigned to each of five treatments for 28 days using a cross-over design. The results showed that: (1) in a comparison of olive oil (OO), fish oil (FO), PS-FO and PS-SO subgroup, PS-FO reduced triacylglycerols (TG) relative to PS-SO. Total cholesterol (T-C)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio was reduced with PS-FO compared with FO. Plasma PS level

Abstract:
The focus of this dissertation is centered on the mass spectral analysis of lipids and changes occurring in keeping with the concept of homeoviscous adaptation [1]. Homeoviscous adaptation is the process of modification of membrane lipids in response to environmental stimuli [1]. Dissertation investigations applied this concept to prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms, and expanded the perception of environmental factors from exogenous organic solvents to intracellular environment. The field of lipidomics deals with the analysis of phospholipid and fatty acid components of membranes the changes

Abstract:
The synthesis of a number of alkyl esters such as methyl lactate, methyl decanoate, and ethyl benzoate via esterification in a reactive distillation is quite challenging. It is due to the complexity in the thermodynamic behaviour of the chemical species in the reaction mixture in addition to the difficulty of keeping the reactants together in the reaction section. One of the reactants (in these esterification reactions) having the lowest boiling point can separate from the other reactant as the distillation continues. This can result in a significant drop in the reaction conversion in a conven
