Abstract:
This chapter describes selected issues of noun phrase, verb phrase, and sentential syntax. It emphasizes differences between the selected constructions in Old Spanish and in the modern standard language. Specific issues discussed include the function of determiners, the use of subject pronouns, the preverbal or postverbal placement of clitic object pronouns, direct object marking, and issues involving subject-verb-object and noun-adjective word order. The section on verbal syntax examines the use of the present, imperfect, and preterit tenses in medieval Hispano-Romance, the syntax of analytic or compound tenses, the syntactic differences between the synthetic and analytic futures, the syntax and semantics of the subjunctive, and the syntax of aver/tener and ser/estar.

As inorganic materials are put to more and more practical uses--mainly in electric, magnetic, and optical devices--materials scientists must have an increasingly sophisticated understanding of the chemical and physical properties of inorganic compounds. This volume--the first of its kind in twenty years--provides a unified presentation of the chemistry of non-stoichiometric compounds based on statistical thermodynamics and structural inorganic chemistry. Four modern examples of non-stoichiometric compounds--ionic conducting compounds, hydrogen absorbing alloys, magnetic materials, and electrical materials--are discussed in detail. Students and researchers in structural inorganic chemistry, crystallography, materials science, and solid state physics will find this much-needed book both practical and informative.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 2 reviews the origin of the concept of endocrine disruption and presents a comprehensive treatment of the changing and often competing definitions of endocrine disruptors. The factors influencing the different definitions, impacts of including specific terms, such as “adverse” or “harm,” in this definition, and the important influences surrounding a specific definition are examined. Building on this background, the concept and definition of “neuroendocrine disruption” as “an exogenous chemical substance or mixture that alters the structure or function(s) of the neuroendocrine system” are presented. The distinctions between neurotoxicity and neuroendocrine disruption are delineated, and sources of endocrine-disrupting compound (EDC) exposures from man-made chemicals and “natural” compounds are discussed. Key concepts related to EDC action, including critical windows of sensitivity, early life exposure and later in life disease, multigenerational effects, non-linear and non-monotonic dose responses, low-dose and sex-specific effects, along with key toxicological definitions, are presented.

Abstract:
To many systems of thinking, pharmacology is, by definition, not alternative medicine. However, many alternative treatments, such as the use of herbal compounds or illicit drugs to help PTSD, are outside the scope of standard medicine yet rely on pharmacological mechanisms to support their use. In this chapter, concepts for non-traditional uses of chemical compounds are reviewed. Alternative uses of specific compounds are described. This includes: atypical uses of allopathic compounds, the use of synthetically imitated or isolated natural compounds, the pharmacology of plant-based and herbal medications, and the use of illicit substances which are normally banned in the United States.

Koslicki, Kathrin. Hylomorphic Relations. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198823803.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter takes up the question of how hylomorphists should conceive of the relations between a matter–form compound, its matter, and its form. It responds to the challenge issued to hylomorphists by the Grounding Problem, which asks what (if anything) explains the apparent differences between an object and its matter. Chapter 4 argues that hylomorphists should opt for a “robust” construal of form according to which forms do not simultaneously bear the same relation to a matter–form compound (essentially) and to the matter composing it (accidentally). Armed with this conception of forms, the differences between numerically distinct spatiotemporally coincident objects can then be explained by appeal to a non-modal conception of essence and a mereological approach to the relation between a matter–form compound, its matter, and its form.

Deamer, David W. Assembling Life. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190646387.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In Assembling Life, David Deamer addresses questions that are the cutting edge of research on the origin of life. For instance, how did non-living organic compounds assemble into the first forms of primitive cellular life? What was the source of those compounds and the energy that produced the first nucleic acids? Did life begin in the ocean or in fresh water on terrestrial land masses? Could life have begun on Mars? The book provides an overview of conditions on the early Earth four billion years ago and explains why fresh water hot springs are a plausible alternative to salty seawater as a site where life can begin. Deamer describes his studies of organic compounds that were likely to be available in the prebiotic environment and the volcanic conditions that can drive chemical evolution toward the origin of life. The book is not exclusively Earth-centric, but instead considers whether life could begin elsewhere in our solar system. Deamer does not propose how life did begin, because we can never know that with certainty. Instead, his goal is to understand how life can begin on any habitable planet, with Earth so far being the only known example.

Abstract:
This chapter comprehensively identifies the constraints that control the inflection of English-origin nouns in French. While French and English share the same pluralization morpheme, a small set of English nouns, particularly compounds, fails to receive inflection in French (for example, des black-out vs. des black-jacks). The findings demonstrate that the lack of inflection on this subset is rooted in the parameters of French (rather than English) morphology. Examination of the plural of Anglicisms also provides insight into mechanisms and processes of integration and reveals other findings, e.g. patterns of simplification, Anglicisms as tools for playful language, case studies of loans (people).

Ewan, McKendrick. Ch.7 Non-performance, s.4: Damages, Art.7.4.10. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198702627.003.0159.

Full text
Abstract:
This commentary analyses Article 7.4.10 of the UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts (PICC) concerning interest on damages. Art 7.4.10 is concerned with the award of interest for the non-performance of non-monetary obligations. It does not purport to identify the rate at which interest is payable: it simply identifies the time at which the right to recover interest accrues. Both the text of Art 7.4.10 and the Official Comment are silent on the issue of the rate of interest that is payable. However, it is explicitly confirmed in the Official Comment that Art 7.4.10 takes ‘no stand on the question of compound interest’. Furthermore, the Official Comment states that, ‘when making the final assessment of the harm, regard is to be had to the fact that damages are awarded as from the date of the harm, so as to avoid double compensation’. As for burden of proof, the aggrieved party must prove the non-performance of a non-monetary obligation as well as the time of the non-performance.

Abstract:
This chapter turns to the question of how hylomorphists should conceive of the form of concrete particular objects. It argues that hylomorphists should endorse the individual forms hypothesis and reject the universal forms hypothesis on grounds primarily having to do with the cross-world identification of concrete particular objects. Other issues, e.g., the causal roles ascribed to form or the relation between form and essence, perhaps surprisingly, turn out to be neutral between the individual forms hypothesis and the universal forms hypothesis. When the conclusions of this chapter are combined with those of Chapter 4, we arrive at a preferred conception of forms as “robust” particulars, i.e., as non-repeatable, non-sharable entities which, by their very nature, do not simultaneously belong to the matter–form compound (essentially) and to the matter composing it (accidentally).

The advent of new-generation antipsychotic drugs has broadened the options for the pharmacological treatment of schizophrenia. However, there are still medical needs not met by current antipsychotic treatment, particularly for patients with negative symptoms and cognitive impairments, and for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. A growing body of research has identified new molecular mechanisms and novel pharmacological targets for treating schizophrenia beyond just dopamine D2 antagonism. This chapter provides a review of compounds in development and emerging non-pharmacological interventions for schizophrenia, and also considers approaches towards personalized and precision medicine for the disorder.

Abstract:
This chapter surveys the polysynthetic characteristics of the languages of the Daly River region of Australia’s Northern Territory. Although they are not all closely related, these languages share many typological features typical of polysynthesis, including the encoding of core arguments in the verbal word; noun incorporation; applicatives; and complex templatic verbal morphology. In addition the Daly languages exhibit complex verbal predicates composed of two discontinuous stems, one functioning broadly to classify the event type and the other providing more specific lexical semantics. These properties are surveyed across a range of Daly languages, considering both their similarities and their differences, and the implications they have for a cross-linguistic typology of polysynthesis.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides a concise introduction to phospholipid chemistry and is intended for a broad audience of biologists, biochemists, and graduate students. Developed as part of a graduate course on lipids, this book also serves as a reference for laboratory investigators on signal transduction and biological membranes. The first part of the text is devoted to an orientation to the chemical nature of lipids in general, how they are thought to be associated in the cell, and the methodology by which the cellular lipids (including the phospholipids) can be recovered from cells and subjected to an initial identification. Subsequent chapters characterize the choline-containing phospholipids, including the sphingolipids, the non-choline containing phospholipids, and finally, the so-called minor phospholipids. The latter compounds, which act as agonists or lipid chemical mediators on cells, form a vanguard of a new category of biologically active substances and have set the study of cellular phospholipids on a new and exiting course. Most importantly, this book provides a basis for further inquiry on these complicated molecules, showing that although the compounds are unique, with care and understanding, they can be studied with ease

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines some initially attractive attempts by E. J. Lowe and Michael Gorman at formulating an independence criterion of substancehood in terms of a particular essentialist construal of ontological dependence. It is argued that the stipulative exclusion of non-particulars and proper parts (or constituents) from these accounts raises difficult issues for their proponents. These results indicate that, in order for a criterion of substancehood to yield the desired results when applied to hylomorphic compounds, a unity criterion for composite substances is more suitable to the task at hand than an independence criterion, despite a general preference among Aristotelians for the latter.

Abstract:
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a chemically diverse group of compounds that share three cardinal characteristics: they are anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic. They are approved by regulatory authorities for the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute gout, and some forms of juvenile idiopathic arthritis. There are at least 20 chemically different NSAIDs currently available in Europe and the United States. These include not only the ‘traditional’ non-selective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitors that inhibit both the COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes but also the COX-2 selective inhibitors. This chapter gives a background of NSAIDs, including the mechanism of action, pharmacology and adverse effects (including hypersensitivity and gastrointestinal, cardiovascular thrombotic, and renal adverse effects), before summarizing the use of NSAIDs in patients with osteoarthritis.

Full text
Abstract:
Mathematical and philosophical thought about continuity has changed considerably over the ages. Aristotle insisted that continuous substances are not composed of points, and that they can only be divided into parts potentially; a continuum is a unified whole. The most dominant account today, traced to Cantor and Dedekind, is in stark contrast with this, taking a continuum to be composed of infinitely many points. The opening chapters cover the ancient and medieval worlds: the pre-Socratics, Plato, Aristotle, Alexander, and a recently discovered manuscript by Bradwardine. In the early modern period, mathematicians developed the calculus the rise of infinitesimal techniques, thus transforming the notion of continuity. The main figures treated here include Galileo, Cavalieri, Leibniz, and Kant. In the early party of the nineteenth century, Bolzano was one of the first important mathematicians and philosophers to insist that continua are composed of points, and he made a heroic attempt to come to grips with the underlying issues concerning the infinite. The two figures most responsible for the contemporary hegemony concerning continuity are Cantor and Dedekind. Each is treated, along with precursors and influences in both mathematics and philosophy. The next chapters provide analyses of figures like du Bois-Reymond, Weyl, Brouwer, Peirce, and Whitehead. The final four chapters each focus on a more or less contemporary take on continuity that is outside the Dedekind–Cantor hegemony: a predicative approach, accounts that do not take continua to be composed of points, constructive approaches, and non-Archimedean accounts that make essential use of infinitesimals.
