Abstract:
Lattice-Boltzmann method(LBM), a promising new particle-based simulation technique for complex and multiscale fluid flows, has seen tremendous adoption in recent years in computational fluid dynamics. Even with a state-of-the-art LBM solver such as Palabos, a user still has to manually write his program using the library-supplied primitives. We propose an automated code generator for a class of LBM computations with the objective to achieve high performance on modern architectures. Tiling is a very important loop transformation used to improve the performance of stencil computations by exploit

Abstract:
The efficiency of nuclear reactors can be improved by increasing the operating pressure of current nuclear reactors. Current CANDU-type nuclear reactors use heavy water as coolant at an outlet pressure of up to 11.5 MPa. Conceptual SuperCritical Water Reactors (SCWRs) will operate at a higher coolant outlet pressure of 25 MPa. Supercritical water technology has been used in advanced coal plants and its application proves promising to be employed in nuclear reactors. To better understand how supercritical water technology can be applied in nuclear power plants, supercritical water loops are use

Abstract:
<p>Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established surgical therapy for movement disorders. The mechanisms of action of DBS remain unclear, and selection of stimulation parameters is a clinical challenge and can result in sub-optimal outcomes. Closed-loop DBS systems would use a feedback control signal for automatic adjustment of DBS parameters and improved therapeutic effectiveness. We hypothesized that evoked compound action potentials (ECAPs), generated by activated neurons in the vicinity of the stimulating electrode, would reveal the type and spatial extent of neural activation, as well as

"The Effect of Leading-Edge Geometry on the Induced Drag of a Finite Wing." Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.53549.

Abstract:
abstract: This study identifies the influence that leading-edge shape has on the aerodynamic characteristics of a wing using surface far-field and near-field analysis. It examines if a wake survey is the appropriate means for measuring profile drag and induced drag. The paper unveils the differences between sharp leading-edge and blunt leading-edge wings with the tools of pressure loop, chordwise pressure distribution, span load plots and with wake integral computations. The analysis was performed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), vortex lattice potential flow code (VORLAX), and a few

Abstract:
The degree by which a species can adapt to the demands of its changing environment defines how well it can exploit the resources of new ecological niches. Since the nervous system is the seat of an organism's behavior, studying adaptation starts from there. The nervous system adapts through neuronal plasticity, which may be considered as the brain's reaction to environmental perturbations. In a natural setting, these perturbations are always changing. As such, a full understanding of how the brain functions requires studying neuronal plasticity under temporally varying stimulation conditions,
