Abstract:
Walkers provided stability to the elderly but cannot assist a person from sitting to standing. The objective of this project is to present the design and analysis of a lift assist walker. This report discusses the design and analysis of a collapsible lift assist walker capable of lifting a patient up to 250 lbs. from seated to standing in under 10 seconds. The designed walker utilized a two stage scissor mechanism with a gas spring assisted embedded linear actuator.

Moon, Hyeun Jun. "Assessing Mold Risks in Buildings under Uncertainty." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/7279.

Abstract:
Microbial growth is a major cause of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) problems. The implications of mold growth range from unacceptable musty smells and defacement of interior finishes, to structural damage and adverse health effects, not to mention lengthy litigation processes. Mold is likely to occur when a favorable combination of humidity, temperature, and substrate nutrient are maintained long enough. As many modern buildings use products that increase the likelihood of molds (e.g., paper and wood based products), reported cases have increased in recent years. Despite decades of intensive researc

This thesis concerns the simulation of locomotion in vertebrates. The state-of-the-art uses genetic algorithms together with solid body kinematics to generate possible solutions for stable gaits. In recent work, this methodology led to a hopping gait in a dinosaur and the researchers wondered if this was realistic. The purpose of the research carried out in this thesis was to examine whether quick and simple finite-element analyses could be added to the simulator, to evaluate a simple ―break or―not break failure criterion. A break would rule out gaits that might damage theowner‘s skeleton. Lin

Abstract:
Domain swapping is a wide spread phenomenon which involves the association between two or more protein subunits such that intra-molecular interactions between domains in each subunit are replaced by equivalent inter-molecular interactions between the same domains in different subunits. This thesis is devoted to the analysis of the factors that drive proteins to undergo such association modes. The specific system analyzed is the monomer to swapped dimer formation of the B1 domain of the immunoglobulin G binding protein (GB1). The formation of this dimer was shown to be fostered by 4 amino acid

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of human joint disease causing significant pain and disability. Current treatment for hip OA is limited to pain management and joint replacement for end-stage disease. The development of methods for early diagnosis and new treatment options are urgently needed to minimise the impact of the disease. Studies of hip OA have shown that hip joint morphology correlates with susceptibility to hip OA and disease progression. Bone shape analyses play an important role in disease diagnosis, pre-operative planning, and treatment analysis as well as in epidemiol

Progression of spinal deformity in children was studied with Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to identify how gravity affects the deformity and to determine the full three-dimensional character of the deformity. The CT study showed that gravity is significant in deformity progression in some patients which has implications for clinical patient management. The world first MRI study showed that the standard clinical measure used to define the extent of the deformity is inadequate and further use of three-dimensional MRI should be considered by spinal surgeons.

Selective electron beam melting (SEBM) is a promising powder bed Additive Manufacturing technique for near-net-shape manufacture of high-value titanium components. An extensive research program has been carried out to characterise in 3D the size, volume fraction, and spatial distribution of the pores in model samples, using X-ray computed tomography (XCT), and correlate them to the SEBM process variables. The average volume fraction of the pores (97.5 %) where fatigue cracks would initiate based on the relative stress intensity factor of all the pores. In contrast, crack growth was found to be
