Abstract:
The problem addressed in this thesis is the development of strategic knowledge through the teaching and learning process. Specifically, it addresses strategic knowledge in three-dimensional solid modelling computer aided design (3DSM-CAD). The problem is addressed through two separate studies. In Study 1 the research question, What constitutes strategic 3DSM-CAD knowledge? is addressed. The outcomes of the first study are then used to inform the second study which addresses the research question: What instructional strategies will improve the use of strategic 3DSM-CAD knowledge? It is argued that CAD knowledge is inadequately theorised and a reconceptualisation of 3DSM-CAD knowledge is proposed. This proposed reconceptualisation is tested in Study 1 using a sample of 3DSM-CAD experts. The findings of this study are interpreted as supporting the theorised reconceptualisation of 3DSM-CAD knowledge. Study 2 investigates whether the use of expert strategies by novice 3DSM-CAD learners can be improved though the teaching and learning process. An instructional intervention is devised and empirically tested. The findings of this study provide support for the design of the intervention. It is argued in this thesis that the existing conceptualisation of CAD (computer aided design) knowledge is too narrow and is inadequately theorised, particularly the current interpretation of strategic knowledge. Presently strategic CAD knowledge is narrowly defined in terms of making choices between methods of model production. This thesis draws on existing research on expertise and in cognitive science to interpret strategic knowledge in terms of the metacognitive processes undertaken by experts when they engage in 3DSM-CAD processes. Strategic 3DSM-CAD knowledge is thus more broadly interpreted to include the metacognitive processes of planning, predicting, process selection, monitoring and evaluating. It is argued that this reconceptualisation is needed, as much of the existing research in CAD expertise is based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional CAD and not the parametric three-dimensional CAD currently used in industry and in education. The parametric nature of current 3DSM-CAD software provides a situation whereby decisions made at an early stage in the modelling process may later lead to model failure. The development of the use of expert 3DSM-CAD strategies is therefore considered important not only in order to improve the efficiency of the modelling process but also in ensuring the integrity of the model during subsequent design modification. Study 1 of the thesis addresses the delineation of 3DSM-CAD expertise. It uses existing research in expertise, the identification of experts and in knowledge elicitation as a basis for the study. In addition, a theoretical examination of the literature in cognition and mental imagery is used to conceptualise the 3DSM-CAD process. 3DSM-CAD experts are identified for case studies that investigate the cognitive processes undertaken by 3DSM experts as they engage in 3DSM-CAD processes. The selection of experts is undertaken using criteria identified in existing research in expertise: they have a number of years experience in the domain, they currently use 3DSM-CAD on a regular basis, others regard them as possessing domain expertise and, they have experience in teaching/training others. The findings of this study suggest that, while these existing criteria are useful when identifying experts in the use of complex computer applications, there is the possibility that these activities may be specific to the domain in which the software is used. For example, 3DSM-CAD capabilities may be specific in engineering or architecture but not to 3DSM-CAD in general. It is therefore argued that higher level experts may be identified by the additional criteria of their engagement in a range of problem solving activities across a range of contexts such as is found in 'Help Desk' personnel. Study 1 also builds on existing knowledge elicitation research through the development and testing of a knowledge elicitation technique, video-capture with think-aloud protocols, which enables the capture of very detailed data regarding the cognitive processes employed by individuals as they interact with complex computer applications. The findings of Study 1 support the proposed reconceptualisation of 3DSM-CAD knowledge and, in particular, the metacognitive nature of the strategic knowledge employed by 3DSM-CAD experts. Study 1 also found that 3DSM-CAD experts employ a range of mental imagery techniques, including those identified in this thesis as unique to 3DSM-CAD, in the process of solving 3DSM-CAD problems. Further, the findings establish that 3DSM-CAD experts engage in 'expert parsing' when dividing an object into parts prior to undertaking the modelling process. 'Expert parsing' is similar to the characteristic of experts in other fields who employ a deeper and more structured problem solving approach, looking beyond the surface features of an object. 3DSM-CAD experts identify deeper features and alternative algorithmic saliencies so that the choices of processes that allow both efficient object modelling and the possibility of making future changes may be made. 3DSM-CAD experts are found to bring a different approach to the 3DSM-CAD process based upon the 'encapsulation' (Boshuizen, Schmidt, Custers, & Van de Weil, 1995) of knowledge into an 'easy to change' script. Study 2 addresses the research question: What instructional strategies will improve the use of strategic 3DSM-CAD knowledge? Study 2 builds on the findings of Study 1 proposing that expertise in 3DSM-CAD involves both the development of metacognitive processes and 'expert parsing'. It is argued that, due to the perceptual nature of the processes involved in 3DSM-CAD, the metacognitive processes involved in expert 3DSM-CAD performance are facilitated by mental imagery. The development of the intervention employed in Study 2 is derived from the current research in metacognition, mental imagery and the design of learning strategies. A multi-treatment intervention is designed and tested empirically. This treatment is found to be effective in improving the use of expert 3DSM-CAD strategies. From these two studies it is concluded that the proposed reconceptualisation of 3DSM-CAD knowledge into three levels; declarative command knowledge, specific procedural command knowledge and strategic knowledge is appropriate. Further, the research supports the metacognitive nature of strategic knowledge and thus the need to address the development of expertise in 3DSM-CAD through a cognitive approach to instruction.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a complete package for the design and three dimensional modeling display of cams.

The software produced as a part of this work will operate as a module of CADAM to produce cam designs and enter the resulting cam as a CAD model and produce the graphical display of the cam.

In addition to the introductory material, this thesis is divided into four sections. The section on the graphics packages used in this thesis includes a brief history and capabilities of each of the packages. The second section details the procedure to be adopted in order to design a cam. The next section details ANICAM, the program that has been developed to incorporate the design and display procedure. The fourth section of this thesis contains recommendations for further work in this area.

The theoretical work in this project is a combination of original derivations and applications of the theory in the design literature.

Abstract:
Computer Aided Design (CAD) has the capability to influence a company's competitiveness in terms of quality, flexibility and cost effectiveness of design. Consequently, the opportunities provided by the efficient and effective use of CAD techniques are vital to a company's operational and business success. The aims of this research have been to; 1 Ascertain and identify the contribution and relevance of human factor and technological issues within a successful CAD implementation methodology. 2. Develop a human factor understanding which, when incorporated into an implementation methodology aids the introduction of CAD technology and increases the likelihood of realising opportunities. The initial research is based on a review of the literature on CAD and a pilot study of six companies employing CAD. This identifies the mix of issues involved during implementation as being, Technical, Organisational and Human. It also highlights the main problems experienced by companies as a function of the levels of Support, Direction and Communication. The above issues have been incorporated into a CAD introduction framework based on quality criteria. The results of this initial stage of the research have been substantiated by in-depth case studies of three companies, in various stages of CAD adoption and "Best Practice" activities have been identified for each area of the framework and related to the overall performance of the companies. To widen the scope of the investigation and provide more evidence, the framework was then employed in the in-depth analysis of six further case studies. These identified CAD support as playing a key role in maximising CAD potential. From this evidence a "Support Framework" has been proposed and validated via the results of a written postal questionnaire distributed to 1000 UK companies. Evidence from the 100 respondents of the postal survey strongly supports the proposition and suggests that companies are experiencing human problems, especially in the area of advanced 3D CAD. The problems are a result of inadequate internal support systems and can be overcome by the methods proposed by this research.

Les récentes avancées en biologie des systèmes et en biologie synthétique contribuent déjà au fleurissement d'applications en ingénierie métabolique visant une bioproduction renouvelable de composés chimiques. Nous pouvons entrevoir un futur où des microbes serait conçus à la carte afin de valoriser n'importe quelle source de carbone en n'importe quel composé d'intérêt. Si la route est longue avant l'accomplissement d'un tel objectif, son parcours devrait en être grandement facilité par l'exploitation de méthodes d'ingénierie déjà éprouvées dans d'autres disciplines. On s'attend entre autre à ce que l'utilisation de logiciels de Conception Assistée par Ordinateur (CAO) diminue le temps et l’expertise nécessaires à la construction de voies métaboliques n'existant pas dans la nature. La première partie de cette thèse est dédiée à notre méthode de prédiction de voies métaboliques et à ses implémentations. Nous décrivons tout particulièrement RetroPath2.0, un outil de prédiction de réseaux de réactions mettant l'accent sur les applications de rétrosynthèse, et qui est construit pour être facilement extensible par la communauté. Dans la seconde partie, nous détaillons l'intérêt des biosenseurs intracellulaires pour l'ingénierie métabolique et introduisons SensiPath; une application web qui exploite un outil de prédiction de réactions pour concevoir des circuits métaboliques permettant la biodétection de composés pour lesquels aucun biosenseur direct n'est connu. Dans l'ensemble, cette thèse propose que les outils de bioCAO devraient permettre de révéler la créativité de leurs utilisateurs et encourager l'exploration de nouvelles applications
Advances in systems and synthetic biology are fueling our ability to develop successful metabolic engineering applications for the sustainable production of bio-based chemicals. We can envision a future in which designer cells could be engineered to transform any carbon source into any target compound. This daunting task will be achieved by leveraging methods that proved themselves in other engineering disciplines. Among those, the use of Computer Aided Design(CAD) softwares is expected to reduce the amount of time and expert knowledge needed to design de novo metabolic pathways. The first part of this thesis is dedicated to our pathway prediction algorithm and its CAD implementations. Most notably, we will present RetroPath2.0, a versatile reaction network prediction framework focused on retrosynthesis that is built to be easily extensible by the community. In the second part, we will highlight the interest of intracellular biosensors for metabolic engineering and introduce SensiPath, a web application that uses a reaction prediction engine to design biosensing circuits for compounds for which no direct biosensors are known. Altogether, this thesis proposes that bioCAD tools should focus on empowering users’ creativity and encourage them to explore original applications

Abstract:
Abstract This survey can be seen as quite multidisciplinary research. The basis for this study has been inapplicability of different CAD user interfaces in architectural design. The objective of this research is to improve architectural design from the creative problem-solving viewpoint, where the main goal is to intensify architectural design by using information technology. The research is linked to theory of methods, where an internal approach to design process means studying the actions and thinking of architects in the design process. The research approach has been inspired by hermeneutics. The human thinking process is divided into subconscious and conscious thinking. The subconscious plays a crucial role in creative work. The opposite of creative work is systematic work, which attempts to find solutions by means of logical inference. Both creative and systematic problem solving have had periods of predominance in the history of Finnish architecture. The perceptions in the present study indicate that neither method alone can produce optimal results. Logic is one of the tools of creativity, since the analysis and implementation of creative solutions require logical thinking. The creative process cannot be controlled directly, but by creating favourable work conditions for creativity, it can be enhanced. Present user interfaces can make draughting and the creation of alternatives quicker and more effective in the final stages of designing. Only two thirds of the architects use computers in working design, even the CAD system is being acquired in greater number of offices. User interfaces are at present inflexible in sketching. Draughting and sketching are the basic methods of creative work for architects. When working with the mouse, keyboard and screen the natural communication channel is impaired, since there is only a weak connection between the hand and the line being drawn on the screen. There is no direct correspondence between hand movements and the lines that appear on the screen, and the important items cannot be emphasized by, for example, pressing the pencil more heavily than normally. In traditional sketching the pen is a natural extension of the hand, as sketching can sometimes be controlled entirely by the unconscious. Conscious efforts in using the computer shift the attention away from the actual design process. However, some architects have reached a sufficiently high level of skill in the use of computer applications in order to be able to use them effectively in designing without any harmful effect on the creative process. There are several possibilities in developing CAD systems aimed at architectural design, but the practical creative design process has developed during a long period of time, in which case changing it in a short period of time would be very difficult. Although CAD has had, and will have, some evolutionary influences on the design process of architects as an entity, the future CAD user interface should adopt its features from the architect's practical and creative design process, and not vice versa.

Abstract:
Productivity is one of the most important factors in manufacturing processes because of the high level of market competition. In this regard, modular fixtures (MFs) play an important role in practically improving productivity in flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) due to this technology using highly productive computer numerical control (CNC) machines. MFs consist of devices called jigs and fixtures for accurately holding the workpiece during different machining operations. The design process is complex, and traditional methods of MF design were not sufficiently productive. Computer-aided design (CAD) software has rapidly improved as a result of the development of computer technology, and has provided huge opportunities for modular fixture designers to use its 3D modelling capabilities to develop more automated systems. Computer-aided fixture design (CAFD) systems have become automated by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This study will investigate the further improvement of automated CAFD systems by using AI tools. In this research, an integrated CAFD is developed by considering four main requirements: · a 3D model of the workpiece, · an expert system, · assembly automation of MFs, · an efficient feature library. The 3D model is an important factor that can provide the appropriate specification of the workpiece; SolidWorks is used the CAD environment for undertaking the 3D modelling in this study. The expert system is applied as a tool to make right decisions about the CAFD planning process, including locating and clamping methods and their related element selection. This helps achieve a feasible fixture design layout. SolidWorks API and Visual Basic programming language are employed for the automating and simulation of the assembly process of MFs. A feature library of modular fixture elements is constructed as a means to simplify the fixture design process.

Abstract:
Power electronic converters are being increasingly used on isolated marine power systems, to provide variable speed control of electric motors. As the rating of these drive converters increases, the converter load becomes a significant part of the total system load. Traditional methods for calculating the performance characristics, which assume the presence of an infinite busbar on the system, are not appropriate for such systems. The intercoupling which exists between system components such as synchronous generators, converters, and the drive motor must be included in the calculation. In this thesis, a commercially available software simulator Saber, is used to model a complete electrical cycloconverter propulsion drive, of the type which may be used for future Royal Navy frigates. This model includes the synchronous generators, cycloconverters, and induction motor drives. The simulation is performed in the time domain, which ensures that the intercoupling present between system components is preserved. The simulation is not restricted to one converter configuration, and has been used to investigate the relative merits of a number of possible converter connections. This method can be used to study drive performance under unbalanced conditions as well as for normal balanced operation. There is no perceived limit to the size, or complexity, of the converter systems which can be studied using this method. The only cost would be increased computer run times.

Abstract:
Robots with vision capability have been taught to recognize unknown objects by comparing their shape features with those of known objects, which are stored in the vision system as a knowledge base. Traditionally, this knowledge base is created by showing the robot the set of objects that it is likely to come across. This is done with the vision system to be used and must be done in an online mode. An approach to teach the robot in an off-line mode by integrating the robot vision system and an off-line graphic system, has been developed in this research. Instead of showing the objects that the robot is likely to come across, graphic models of the objects were created in an off-line graphic system and a FORTRAN program that processes the models to extract their shape parameters was developed. These shape parameters were passed to the vision system. A program to process an unknown object placed in front of the vision system was developed to extract its shape parameters. A program that compares the parameters of the unknown object with those of the known models was also developed. The vision system was calibrated to measure the pixel dimensions in inches. In the vision system, shape parameters of the objects were found to vary with different orientations. The range of variation for each parameter was established and this was taken into consideration in the parameter comparison program.

Abstract:
Electronic engineering product design is a complex process which has enjoyed an increasing provision of computer based tools since the early 1980's. Over this period computer aided design tool development has progressed at such a pace that new features and functions have tended to be market driven. As such CAD tools have not been developed through the recommended practise of defining a functional specification prior to any software code generation. This thesis defines a new functional specification for next generation CAD tools to support the electronics product design process. It is synthesized from a review of the use of computers in the electronics product design process, from a case study of Best Practices prevalent in a wide range of electronics companies and from a new model of the design process. The model and the best practices have given rise to a new concept for company engineering documentation, the Product Book which provides a logical framework for constraining CAD tools and their users (designers) as means of controlling costs in the design process. This specification differs from current perceptions of computer functionality in the CAD tool industry by addressing human needs together with company needs of computer supported design, rather than just providing more technological support for the designer in isolation.

Abstract:
Assembly-oriented design offers great potential for product rationalisation, increasing productivity and reducing lead time and cost. It results in simpler and more reliable products which are less expensive to assemble and manufacture. To facilitate assembly-oriented design, an assembly-oriented CAD environment is needed to incorporate Design for Assembly (DFA) evaluation from an early design stage. Assembly planning should also be integrated to support the DFA evaluation. This thesis reports the results of research towards supporting such an assembly-oriented CAD environment. A novel approach has been used to deploy an Expert Assembler to support proactive DFA evaluation and assembly sequence definition. This is particularly useful, as designers are rarely if ever assembly experts. Based on the fact that there are several areas needing expert support in this assembly-oriented CAD environment, but that different areas have very different requirements and different knowledge is involved, the Expert Assembler deployed contains several separated modules. Each module is an expert agent devised to tackle a problem area that uses a suitable problem solving strategy, knowledge representation and reasoning method. This brings a number of advantages that are detailed in the thesis. The thesis presents systematical ideas for support proactive DFA, with the focus on support for part count reduction and assembly sequence generation. This is realised by three elements of the expert agents: Part Count Advisor, Starting Part Advisor, and Next Part Advisor. Part count reduction is usually based on dialogue with the user. There is little computational support for this issue in any of the DFA methodologies and related literature. This research fills the gap: it brings computational support for part count reduction from the early design stage. The work has also made new progress in assembly sequence generation. The Starting Part Advisor and the Next Part Advisor cooperate with each other and with the user to provide suggestions dynamically and transparently regarding base part and the most suitable next part selection in assembly sequence definition. Case studies were used to test the effectiveness of the Advisors.
