Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.<br>Over the past twenty years, automated tutoring systems have gained an increasing recognition as a prominent area of Artificial Intelligence (AI). During this period, Intelligent Computer Aided Instruction (ICAI) systems have been developed using a variety of AI techniques to enhance the learning process. The core AI issue in designing these systems concerns knowledge representation. A review of current AI literature shows that there are numerous, distinctly different knowledge representation schemes, and most conventional programming e

Shulok, Thomas Aaron. "CHARTMAKER: a "true consultant" expert system for designing charts." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40982.

Abstract:
<p>Expert system technology has produced systems that perform heuristic classification. These systems solve problems of a type determined by the knowledge engineer and the expert at system design time. A "true consultant" on the contrary, applies domain knowledge to solve a problem not previously seen. For example, a graphic design consultant must accept the statement of almost any problem from a client and turn it into a visual design. This thesis reports the successful construction of the first such true consultant for a well-understood domain: the visual design task of chart construct

Abstract:
Certain Operative Dentistry skill sets, such as bonding procedures, do not require a refined psychomotor skill level as much as a mastery of the concepts, placement and timing requirements of the bonding procedure. Procedures such as these may lend themselves well to the interactive media style that today's students are so familiar with in a computer module "gaming" format.

Why this thesis is needed. This thesis is motivated by the falling school results of Swedish 15-year-olds, a lack of IT tools in Swedish schools and a call for turning the theory on formative assessment into practice.

Abstract:
The thesis covers a series of PC programs that we have written that will enable users to easily design FIR linear phase lowpass digital filters and multistage sampling rate conversion systems. The first program is a rewrite of the McClellanParks computer program with some slight modifications. The second program uses an algorithm proposed by Rabiner that determines the length of a lowpass digital filter. Rabiner used a formula proposed by Herrmann et al. to initially estimate the filter length in his algorithm. The formula, however, assumes unity gain. We present a modification to the formula

In recent years, much attention has been directed to the use of educational games for learning computer science concepts. The motivation of game-based learning with positive experience has been deeply studied in the literature, but game design for improving code reading skills have much room for improvement. Being good at the reading code is important to a professional developer. To address this issue, we defined a new educationally-oriented mobile game application, aimed at promoting the development of code reading skills in a new and fun way. A large but unknown number of traumatic injuries are non-accidental, i.e. inflicted. The lack of sensitivity and specificity required to diagnose Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) from radiological studies results in putting the children at risk of re-injury and death. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), also designated matrixins, hydrolyze components of the extracellular matrix. These proteinases play a central role in many biological processes, such as embryogenesis, normal tissue remodeling, wound healing, and angiogenesis, and in diseases such as atheroma, arthritis, cancer, and tissue ulceration (Visse et al.,2003). MMPs, especially those capable of cleaving type IV basement membrane collagen (MMP-2 and -9) were considered to be ideal targets for drug development. Two gelatinases, MMP-2 (72-kDa gelatinase) and MMP-9 (92-kDa gelatinase), are key proteina
