McManigal, Chris A. "Towards More Comprehensive Information Retrieval Systems: Entity Extraction Using XSLT." UNF Digital Commons, 2005. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/222.

Full text
Abstract:
One problem that exists in today's document management arena is the issue of retrieving information from electronic documents such as images, Microsoft Office documents, and e-mail. Specific data entities must be extracted from these documents so that the data can be searched and queried. This study presents a unique approach to extracting these entities: using Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) to match patterns in text. Because XSLT is processed at run time, new XSLT templates can be created and used without having to recompile and redeploy the application. The specific implementation addressed in this project extracts entities from an image file. The data in the image file is converted to Extensible Markup Language (XML) text via optical character recognition (OCR), and then this XML text is transformed into an organized, well-formed XML output file using an XSLT template. We show this approach can accurately retrieve the correct data and this method can be extended to other electronic document sources.

Campbell, Tammy P. "The Effect of Subliminal Learning: Using a Direct Manipulation Computer Interface." UNF Digital Commons, 1993. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/152.

Full text
Abstract:
Research to determine what subliminal presentation accomplishes and its effects upon the learning process is very limited. The possibility of presenting subliminal information in a passive manner to reinforce the learning process and the possibility that this presentation can aid in the absorption of the information needed to learn is examined. A previous study examined this possibility using a text editor as the test instrument. In this thesis, a direct manipulation interface using a spreadsheet which visually presents tasks is examined to determine if this environment might be more effective with a learning medium using subliminal perception, then was the case of a text editor. This approach is based on the idea that, in contrast to a text editor, with direct manipulation the user would be completely focused on the computer screen where the subliminal message is presented increasing the chances for feedback. The results of this study show no significant difference between subjects who were getting subliminal help screen presentations and those who were getting either subliminal garbage screen presentations or blank screen presentations. This is in conflict with previous research.

Hudson, Erik Mark. "A Portable Computer System for Recording Heart Sounds and Data Modeling Using a Backpropagation Neural Network." UNF Digital Commons, 1995. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/158.

Full text
Abstract:
Cardiac auscultation is the primary tool used by cardiologists to diagnose heart problems. Although effective, auscultation is limited by the effectiveness of human hearing. Digital sound technology and the pattern classification ability of neural networks may offer improvements in this area. Digital sound technology is now widely available on personal computers in the form of sound cards. A good deal of research over the last fifteen years has shown that neural networks can excel in diagnostic problem solving. To date, most research involving cardiology and neural networks has focussed on ECG pattern classification. This thesis explores the prospects of recording heart sounds in Wave format and extracting information from the Wave file for use with a backpropagation neural network in order to classify heart patterns.

Full text
Abstract:
The Incident Dispatching and Tracking System (IDTS) was developed to facilitate the technical support of an organization. IDTS provides a means by which a user may submit their issue/problem to the system and receive a unique trouble ticket number. This number can then be used to view the status of that record, minimizing the need for inquiries to the technical support team. IDTS also provides a dispatching function that assigns each trouble ticket to a technician that specializes in that type of issue. Finally, there is a reporting function that allows the technical support team to view the current technical status of the organization, generate statistics on previously submitted trouble tickets, and determine areas that may require assistance in the future.

Watters, Burr S. IV. "Development and Performance Evaluation of a Real-Time Web Search Engine." UNF Digital Commons, 2004. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/295.

Full text
Abstract:
As the World Wide Web continues to grow, the tools to retrieve the information must develop in terms of locating web pages, categorizing content, and retrieving quality pages. Web search engines have enhanced the online experience by making pages easier to find. Search engines have made a science of cataloging page content, but the data can age, becoming outdated and irrelevant. By searching pages in real time in a localized area of the web, information that is retrieved is guaranteed to be available at the time of the search. The real-time search engines intriguing premise provides an overwhelming challenge. Since the web is searched in real time, the engine's execution will take longer than traditional search engines. The challenge is to determine what factors can enhance the performance of the real-time search engine. This research takes a look at three components: traversal methodologies for searching the web, utilizing concurrently executing spiders, and implementing a caching resource to reduce the execution time of the real-time search engine. These components represent some basic methodologies to improve performance. By determining which implementations provide the best response, a better and faster real-time search engine can become a useful searching tool for Internet users.

Hoffstatter, John Arthur. "Preconceived Physician Attitude Toward Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE): Implications for Successful Implementation." UNF Digital Commons, 2004. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/240.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been a societal and legislative push to implement computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems throughout hospitals nationally in recent years due in large part to the public's awareness of an inordinate number of patient deaths due to medication errors in hospital settings. This mortality, and untold morbidity, became even more unacceptable when published findings suggested the majority of these 100,000 deaths each year could be avoided through the use of CPOE systems. Yet acceptance has been slow and only a fraction of the hospitals have implemented this technology due to large start up costs, enormous technological requirements, and prior well-published failures of such attempts largely due to physicians' lack of acceptance. A total of71 participants were surveyed whose daily responsibility involved the ordering of medications, to determine what attitudes they had concerning CPOE systems. This was done at a facility scheduled to implement such a system over the next year. The data showed evidence supporting many of the current implementation strategies, while suggesting modification of others. Based on these findings, recommendations are made for future implementations with the hope of gaining enhanced physician acceptance and adoption, facilitating a more successful implementation of CPOE systems.

Grant, Irina K. "Performance Evaluation and Comparison of CORBA Implementations for the Java Platform." UNF Digital Commons, 2002. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/189.

Full text
Abstract:
Middleware is a software layer between the applications, services and the operating system that provides an abstraction to the application programmer. It masks the heterogeneous nature of the network and provides such services as remote calls, naming service, transaction process abilities, and security services. Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) is a middleware design that is implemented through the use of Object Request Broker (ORB), which is a software component that, allows communication between the remote objects and applications that use them in a distributed environment. CORBA applications can run on almost any platform, operating system, and support different languages. There are many types of distributed object middleware on the market such as Sun's Java 2 ORB, Inprises's VisiBroker for Java, IONA's ORBacus for Java, and IONA's Orbix 2000 for Java. Because of these various products, it is difficult to select the product that will provide the specific requirements for one's application. The goal of this project is to evaluate the above-mentioned implementations of the CORBA standards and, additionally, CORBA was compared to LAMIMPI for efficiency. The results of this project should provide developers and novices studying distributed systems the necessary data to evaluate and select the most efficient CORBA product to meet their specific design requirements, and provide a methodology for further evaluation.

Mishra, Jayant. "P2PCompute - A Peer-to-Peer Computing Model." UNF Digital Commons, 2006. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/244.

Full text
Abstract:
Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks consist of nodes which have both client and server capabilities and on which communication and data sharing is carried on directly between nodes, rather than being arbitrated by an intermediary node. The P2P architecture was popularized by file-sharing, one of the widely-used applications of the Internet. Many applications that are based on this architecture have been developed. It also provides an efficient platform to harness the computing power of a network of desktop computers. P2P computing power can help solve computationally complex problems that require powerful supercomputers. However, it has not been as widely used as the file-sharing P2P applications. Almost all of the current P2P computing applications are noncommercial endeavors. Users make their computing power available for these endeavors because they believe in the applications' objectives, for example, the SETI project analyzes radio telescope data in the quest for life in other parts of the universe. This thesis proposes P2PCompute - a viable commercial model in the P2P computing field. It harnesses existing technologies- P2P, Java, the Internet and the UDDI registry, to enable distributed processing of tasks on multiple servers. It is well-suited to the heterogeneous environment on the Internet and has the potential to provide the spark that would lead to the development of more commercial P2P computing applications.

Smith, Terry L. "Recent Trends in Software Engineering Research As Seen Through Its Publications." UNF Digital Commons, 2004. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/205.

Full text
Abstract:
This study provides some insight into the field of software engineering through analysis of its recent research publications. Data for this study are taken from the ACM's Guide to Computing Literature (GUIDE) They include both the professionally assigned Computing Classification System (CCS) descriptors and the title text of each software engineering publication reviewed by the GUIDE from 1998 through 2001. The first part of this study provides a snapshot of software engineering by applying co-word analysis techniques to the data. This snapshot indicates recent themes or areas of interest, which, when compared with the results from earlier studies, reveal current trends in software engineering. Software engineering continues to have no central focus. Concepts like software development, process improvement, applications, parallelism, and user interfaces are persistent and, thus, help define the field, but they provide little guidance for researchers or developers of academic curricula. Of more interest and use are the specific themes illuminated by this study, which provide a clearer indication of the current interests of the field. Two prominent themes are the related issues of programming-in-the-large and best practices. Programming-in-the-large is the term often applied to large-scale and long-term software development, where project and people management, code reusability, performance measures, documentation, and software maintenance issues take on special importance. These issues began emerging in earlier periods, but seem to have risen to prominence during the current period. Another important discovery is the trend in software development toward using networking and the Internet. Many network- and Internet-related descriptors were added to the CCS in 1998. The prominent appearance and immediate use of these descriptors during this period indicate that this is a real trend and not just an aberration caused by their recent addition. The titles of the period reflect the prominent themes and trends. In addition to corroborating the keyword analysis, the title text confirms the relevance of the CCS and its most recent revision. By revealing current themes and trends in software engineering, this study provides some guidance to the developers of academic curricula and indicates directions for further research and study.

Wears, Robert L. "Simulation Modeling of Prehospital Trauma Care." UNF Digital Commons, 1993. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/156.

Full text
Abstract:
Prehospital emergency care systems are complex and do not necessarily respond predictably to changes in management. A combined discrete-continuous simulation model focusing on trauma care was designed and implemented in SIMSCRIPT II.5 to allow prediction of the systems response to policy changes in terms of its effect on the system and on patient survival. The utility of the completed model was demonstrated by the results of experiments on triage and helicopter dispatching policies. Experiments on current and two alternate triage policies showed that helicopter utilization is significantly increased by more liberal triage to Level 1 trauma centers, which was expected, but that the waiting time for pending accidents tended to decrease, an unexpected consequence. Experiments on helicopter dispatch policy showed that liberalization of the dispatch policy would have much greater consequences than would changing the triage criteria. Again, this result was unexpected and has received little attention from system planners and administrators, especially with respect to the degree of discussion and controversy surrounding triage criteria.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Education Management Information System (EMIS) is the business unit that is responsible for information management and business reporting in the Department of Education. EMIS finds it difficult to provide high quality information to the Department of Education internally and its stakeholders externally and attributes the reduction of the quality of its education information to factors such as the organisational nature of the South African education system, the lack of information management standards and practices, the low level of information technology skills in EMIS, the existence of a multitude of disparate information systems in the Department of Education and Provincial Education Departments, and the apparent discontinuity in the flow of information from education institution level to the national department and back. Most research in information management confirmed the state of EMIS as being typical of most large organisations whose functioning depends on the quality of their information. The factors that influence information quality in EMIS had been identified as accuracy, timeliness, consistency and relevance of the information. A “quick-fix” to the information problem is not possible but research in information systems management indicates that there are trends in the electronic business arena that may provide an acceptable solution to most of the problems encountered by EMIS. This report investigates the nature of EMIS problems in terms of information management and investigates possible solutions to the problems. The investigation is done within the framework of acknowledged information systems planning process and aligned to the process model of information management. An exposition is given on the theory pertaining to information management, information systems and information systems management to give insight into the particular fields of study and their interdependencies. A section on business intelligence is included since business reporting is the primary function of EMIS. Investigations into information systems development indicate an exponential growth in electronic technology development specifically the Internet and the Web. The information systems plan provides the framework or set of guidelines to determine the information systems solution that will be able to solve their problems. The research report included four stages of the information systems plan framework. The first stage pertains to the identification of minimum information required from the education sector and supporting sectors to provide high quality education information for decision-making and planning. The second stage determines and benchmarks the state of EMIS in terms of information management processes. The third stage investigates the trends in electronic business and specifically electronic information systems applications. Current best practices indicate that a possible solution to information management problems in large organisations is the application of a web-based, electronic, enterprise-wide, integrated information system.

Keng, Leng Hui. "Approximate String Matching With Dynamic Programming and Suffix Trees." UNF Digital Commons, 2006. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/196.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance and the contribution of string matching algorithms to the modern society cannot be overstated. From basic search algorithms such as spell checking and data querying, to advanced algorithms such as DNA sequencing, trend analysis and signal processing, string matching algorithms form the foundation of many aspects in computing that have been pivotal in technological advancement. In general, string matching algorithms can be divided into the categories of exact string matching and approximate string matching. We study each area and examine some of the well known algorithms. We probe into one of the most intriguing data structure in string algorithms, the suffix tree. The lowest common ancestor extension of the suffix tree is the key to many advanced string matching algorithms. With these tools, we are able to solve string problems that were, until recently, thought intractable by many. Another interesting and relatively new data structure in string algorithms is the suffix array, which has significant breakthroughs in its linear time construction in recent years. Primarily, this thesis focuses on approximate string matching using dynamic programming and hybrid dynamic programming with suffix tree. We study both approaches in detail and see how the merger of exact string matching and approximate string matching algorithms can yield synergistic results in our experiments.

Abstract:
As organizations seek to control their practices through Business Process Management (BPM - or the process of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of an organization through the automation of tasks), workflow management systems (WFMS) have emerged as fundamental supporting software tools. A WFMS must maintain process state while managing the utilization of people and applications (resources), data (context), and constraints (rules) associated with each of the tasks [Baeyens04]. It must also be configurable so it can be easily adapted to manage specific workflows within any application domain. Finally, the WFMS should be flexible enough to allow for changing business needs. In order to meet these challenges, a WFMS must provide access to process and document definition tools as well as administrative tools. In this project we have used an "End User Developmentn (EUD) approach [Repenning04] to build a stand-alone web-based WFMS which offers the non-technical end user the ability to design, launch, and manage multiple automated workflows and their associated documents. It empowers end users to build and customize their own systems without requiring from them skills other than those associated with their domain of expertise.

Abstract:
Leading human-computer interaction (HCI) researchers recognize a fundamental difference exists between men and women. Some HCI research has been done regarding gender differences in hand-eye coordination for interactions with computer touch display interfaces, navigation through virtual environments (VE) and language in computer-mediated communication. In these previous studies, gender differences were found in the use of words and language in computer-mediated communication and in navigation strategies for VE but no gender-related differences were found for the hand-eye coordination needed to effectively use a touch display. The current study used a cross-modal (auditory-visual), dual-task, computer interface to examine gender differences in crisis control simulations. For the primary task of alarm monitoring, no gender differences were found for average or maximum response and completion times. Likewise, no gender differences were found in terms of error rates for the primary task or the number correct on the secondary task. However, in terms of minimum response and completion times for alarm monitoring, gender differences were found.

Abstract:
Applying e-commerce technology to public school software is a process that involves an extensive and thorough analysis. There are typically three groups of users who would use such a system: teachers, administrators and parents. Teachers need a system that nearly duplicates the software that they are currently using to enter, store, and calculate their grades, while school administrators and parents need to student and teacher's information. This is where the use of e-commerce technology comes in very nicely. The analysis performed for this project involved extensive interviews with the expert user set and a walk-through of the current system. The majority of the interviews were with the teachers. The design involved the standard function descriptions and data analysis. Use cases were used to describe functionality and an entity relationship diagram was created to describe the data. In order to describe the data flow of the system, a screen hierarchy chart was created as well. This project was undertaken with the goal of providing a readily available medium to student data to different groups of users. The primary data enterers, the teachers, did not want any additional work so the system had to duplicate their current system, functionaly, for entering grades. In actuality, the system improved the way in which grades were entered because several duplicate tasks were eliminated in the creation of the new system. This project was successful in every aspect for which it was planned.

Abstract:
Implementation of distributed parallel algorithms on networked computers has always been very difficult until the introduction of service-oriented architectures (SOA) like JavaSpaces service, CORBA services and Web Services. Algorithms of the type Master/Worker pattern are implemented with relative ease using the SOAs. This project analyzes the performance of such algorithms on three contemporary SOAs namely JavaSpaces service, CORBA services and Web Services. These architectures make the implementations of distributed algorithms reasonably fault tolerant and highly and dynamically scalable. Also, the systems built on these architectures are generally loosely coupled and operate asynchronously. In this project we measure and analyze the latency, speed-up and efficiency metrics of an insertion sort of 0 (n^2) complexity on all the three SOAs. We then draw conclusions of overall performance and scalability on all the three architectures.

Abstract:
Testing web-based enterprise applications requires the use of automated testing frameworks. The testing framework's ability to run suites of test cases through development ensures enhancements work as required and have not caused defects in previously developed sub systems. Open source testing frameworks like JUnit and Cactus have addressed the requirements to test web-based enterprise applications, however they do not address the generation of test cases based on direct analysis of the code under test. This paper presents a tool to generate test cases for web-based enterprise applications. The generator focuses on creating test cases used to test applications built on the Struts MVC framework for the J2EE platform. Using the Struts configuration files, test cases are generated to test each request path and response. The created test cases take advantage of the StrutsTestCase library and run using the JUnit and Cactus frameworks. The generated test cases follow a consistent pattern for the test cases and reduce the time required build the automated testing for the application.

Brown, Richard. "ACWW: Adding Automation to the Cognitive Walkthrough for the Web (CWW)." UNF Digital Commons, 2005. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/195.

Full text
Abstract:
The Cognitive Walkthrough for the Web (CWW) is a Usability Evaluation Method that can be used as an approach to evaluate a website. Unfortunately, the original formulation of CWW has been applied by researchers in the area as a set of a semi-manual processes, which have proven to be extremely time-consuming, and as with any semi-manual process, error-prone. This thesis presents a web-based approach to automate CWW, which we call ACWW. The automation of these processes implies, on the one hand, that researchers can reduce the amount of time dedicated to computing the results associated with performing various analyses. On the other hand, it implies that the accuracy of computed results can be improved. ACWW is available from http://autocww.colorado.edu/~brownr/. Finally, ACWW has been mentioned in a paper by Dr. Marilyn Blackmon, a leader in usability research, at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) in April of 2005 [Blackmon05].
