AbstractWe announce a new result on determining the Conley index of the Poincaré map for a time-periodic non-autonomous ordinary differential equation. The index is computed using some singular cycles related to an index pair of a small-step discretization of the equation. We indicate how the result can be applied to computer-assisted proofs of the existence of bounded and periodic solutions. We provide also some comments on computer-assisted proving in dynamics.

Motivated by the three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger-Poisson system we prove the existence of non-trivial solutions of the one-dimensional stationary Schrödinger-Poisson system using computer-assisted methods.
Starting from a numerical approximate solution, we compute a bound for its defect, and a norm bound for the inverse of the linearization at the approximate solution. For the latter, eigenvalue bounds play a crucial role, especially for the eigenvalues "close to" zero. Therefor, we use the Rayleigh-Ritz method and a corollary of the Temple-Lehmann Theorem to get enclosures

This PhD thesis treats some problems concerning nonlinear differential equations. In the first two papers computer-assisted proofs are used. The differential equations there are rewritten as fixed point problems, and the existence of solutions are proved. The problem in the first paper is one-dimensional; with one boundary condition given by an integral. The problem in the second paper is three-dimensional, and Dirichlet boundary conditions are used. Both problems have their origins in fluid dynamics. Paper III describes an inverse problem for the heat equation. Given the solution, a solution

As computers become a more prevalent commodity in mathematical research and mathematical proof, the question of whether or not a computer assisted proof can be considered a mathematical proof has become an ongoing topic of discussion in the mathematics community. The use of the computer in mathematical research leads to several implications about mathematics in the present day including the notion that mathematical proof can be based on empirical evidence, and that some mathematical conclusions can be achieved a posteriori instead of a priori, as most mathematicians have done before. Automated reasoning, and in particular automated theorem proving, has become a very important research field within the world of mathematics. Besides being used to verify proofs of theorems, it has also been used to discover proofs of theorems which were previously open problems.
