Abstract:
The article deals with some practical issues in modern bilingual lexicography. Its themes include language resources necessary for the work of a modern lexicographer, basic methodology of lexicographic work, computer format of the dictionary and the final result, a dictionary database. Among the language resources, the existing dictionaries are highlighted together with language corpora as indispensable source of language data for modern lexicography. Methodology is presented by using some practical examples from the Slovenian-English language pair. As the standard computer format of modern dictionaries, SGML/XML format is pointed up as the one allowing to control the structure of the dictionary and because of its software independence. The final result of the lexicographer’s work is the computer database in SGML/XML format that contains information of various levels, with the printed dictionary only one of them.

Abstract:
The development of all spheres of public life is associated with the optimization of information processes (collection, storage, processing, transmission of information), so modern society is called information. Modern information and communication technologies play an important role in teaching a foreign language in non-philological higher education institutions. The organization of education using electronic tools allows significant deepening the professional knowledge and optimizing the educational process for students. Modern lexicography has significantly expanded and strengthened its tools with computer technology for creating and using dictionaries. Special programs (databases, computer files, word processing programs) let us automatically generate dictionary entries, store dictionary information and process it. The purpose of the study is to reveal the specifics of computer lexicography use for training managers in a modern agricultural university. To achieve this goal, a set of methods was used: theoretical: comparison and generalization (study of the degree of scientific development of the term “computer lexicography”), analysis, synthesis and generalization of psychological, pedagogical and methodological literature, theoretical forecasting and modeling of computer lexicography to determine scientific bases of the researched problem; empirical: diagnostic methods (interviews, interviews with teachers, questionnaires, analysis of products of professional activity of teachers, which provide philological disciplines in teaching the agricultural managers). The analysis of the problem showed its insufficient representation in modern scientific works. The article characterizes the role of disciplines of the philological cycle in the professional training of higher education students majoring in “Management”; the term “computer lexicography” is defined and its typology is singled out; the conditions for the introduction of computer lexicography in the educational process of agricultural universities are determined; analyzed software for the introduction of elements of computer lexicography in training the marketing specialists in agricultural universities; the positive and negative aspects of the use of computer lexicography as a component of education are revealed. The article for the first time revealed the specifics of the use of computer lexicography in teaching the philological disciplines for the specialty “Management” at the universities in the agricultural sector. The variety of trends in the introduction of computer lexicography at all stages of teaching the discipline is obvious, and, in particular, the variety of approaches to the creation of electronic dictionaries of different types. The obtained results allow deepening the knowledge of future specialists in the field of management, expanding the interests of higher education seekers, simplifying the work of students with special terminology, systematizing the acquired knowledge, improving the quality of philological disciplines through the introduction of information and communication technologies.

Abstract:
The article deals with the actual task of terminology – the introduction of modern means of lexicography process computerization, as well as the creation of lexicographic systems of a modern type. A number of modern online lexicographic sources that record computer terms are analyzed, their features from the point of view of practical application are noted, and the most current trends related to modern lexicography processes are highlighted. During the research the most popular online dictionaries that record IT terms have been selected; the parameters of such online dictionaries are characterized; their practical functions for application in the IT sphere are highlighted; the main trends affecting the further study of the features of the lexicography process are identified and outlined. The following methods were used to solve these problems: a structural and systemic analysis of the most popular online dictionaries and electronic complexes was carried out; such empirical research methods as observation, comparison, monitoring of lexicographic sources were used; the extrapolation method was used to generalize information and spread the conclusions obtained from observation. In this study, we use the term electronic dictionaries – online dictionaries, placed on the network and accessible in the Internet, containing a lexicographic database, as well as special search tools. It was established that the analyzed modern popular online lexicographic sources, which record the terms of the computer terminology, according to the basic principles of lexicography, have an effective toolkit with a variety of functionality. The following types of dictionaries are distinguished among them: 4 electronic complexes, 3 explanatory and translation dictionaries, 1 explanatory dictionary, 3 translation dictionaries, and 1 thesaurus. However, we note a number of disadvantages: closed access or interruptions in accessibility to the online source; irregular updating of online dictionary materials; not quite perfectly thought out navigation; inconvenient placement of register units in the electronic dictionary (only the search bar can be used); information support and help system only in the language of registration (mainly English); sometimes the texts and the definitions themselves need linguistic and stylistic editing; in industry dictionaries, the presence of commonly used terms that are redundant. Conclusion. Despite the unconditional achievements in the compilation of lexicographic online sources using the latest technologies, so far no electronic industry dictionary of computer terms has been created that meets all the needs and requirements of the computer terminology. We note that among the studied online dictionaries, which record the terms of the IT sphere, only two are specialized. They are useful because they provide definitions of terms and their translation, but other necessary characteristics of terms have to be sought in non-specialist online sources. An electronic dictionary of computer terms with the application of information and computer technologies, in our opinion, should have the following main parameters: to be a reference of interpretative and translation type for a specific field, to have completed all the terms of this field; provide comprehensive information about the peculiarities of codified terms: their meaning, main grammatical characteristics, stylistic properties, contexts of use, fixed expressions and other semantic and syntactic structures, which include the registered word; have a convenient search system; have a dictionary user interface that displays the entire paradigm of the searched word; be able to add comments or new words to the personal dictionary; the system of authorization of access to information controlled by the dictionary administrator; database protection against unauthorized use; provide visualization of terms. Therefore, in the future, it is worthwhile, using technology achievements in terminology, to develop the concept of a modern electronic dictionary of computer terms, combining the efforts of lexicographers, programmers, and philologists-terminologists, to create a lexicographic complex of this type.

Abstract:
This dissertation reports on studies of the application of lexicographic graph searches to solve problems in FPGA detailed routing. Our contributions include the derivation of iteration limits for scalar implementations of negotiation congestion for standard floating point types and the identification of pathological cases for path choice. In the study of the routability-driven detailed FPGA routing problem, we show universal detailed routability is NP-complete based on a related proof by Lee and Wong. We describe the design of a lexicographic composition operator of totally-ordered monoids as path cost metrics and show its optimality under an adapted A* search. Our new router, CornNC, based on lexicographic composition of congestion and wirelength, established a new minimum track count for the FPGA Place and Route Challenge. For the problem of long-path timing-driven FPGA detailed routing, we show that long-path budgeted detailed routability is NP-complete by reduction to universal detailed routability. We generalise the lexicographic composition to any finite length and verify its optimality under A* search. The application of the timing budget solution of Ghiasi et al. is used to solve the long-path timing budget problem for FPGA connections. Our delay-clamped spiral lexicographic composition design, SpiralRoute, ensures connection based budgets are always met, thus achieves timing closure when it successfully routes. For 113 test routing instances derived from standard benchmarks, SpiralRoute found 13 routable instances with timing closure that were unroutable by a scalar negotiated congestion router and achieved timing closure in another 27 cases when the scalar router did not, at the expense of increased runtime. We also study techniques to improve SpiralRoute runtimes, including a data structure of a trie augmented by data stacks for minimum element retrieval, and the technique of step tomonoid elimination in reducing the retrieval depth in a trie of stacks structure.

Abstract:
Preferences are very important in research fields such as decision making, recommendersystemsandmarketing. The focus of this thesis is on preferences over combinatorial domains, which are domains of objects configured with categorical attributes. For example, the domain of cars includes car objects that are constructed withvaluesforattributes, such as ‘make’, ‘year’, ‘model’, ‘color’, ‘body type’ and ‘transmission’.Different values can instantiate an attribute. For instance, values for attribute ‘make’canbeHonda, Toyota, Tesla or BMW, and attribute ‘transmission’ can haveautomaticormanual. To this end, thisthesis studiesproblemsonpreference visualization and learning for lexicographic preference trees, graphical preference models that often are compact over complex domains of objects built of categorical attributes. Visualizing preferences is essential to provide users with insights into the process of decision making, while learning preferences from data is practically important, as it is ineffective to elicit preference models directly from users. The results obtained from this thesis are two parts: 1) for preference visualization, aweb- basedsystem is created that visualizes various types of lexicographic preference tree models learned by a greedy learning algorithm; 2) for preference learning, a genetic algorithm is designed and implemented, called GA, that learns a restricted type of lexicographic preference tree, called unconditional importance and unconditional preference tree, or UIUP trees for short. Experiments show that GA achieves higher accuracy compared to the greedy algorithm at the cost of more computational time. Moreover, a Dynamic Programming Algorithm (DPA) was devised and implemented that computes an optimal UIUP tree model in the sense that it satisfies as many examples as possible in the dataset. This novel exact algorithm (DPA), was used to evaluate the quality of models computed by GA, and it was found to reduce the factorial time complexity of the brute force algorithm to exponential. The major contribution to the field of machine learning and data mining in this thesis would be the novel learning algorithm (DPA) which is an exact algorithm. DPA learns and finds the best UIUP tree model in the huge search space which classifies accurately the most number of examples in the training dataset; such model is referred to as the optimal model in this thesis. Finally, using datasets produced from randomly generated UIUP trees, this thesis presents experimental results on the performances (e.g., accuracy and computational time) of GA compared to the existent greedy algorithm and DPA.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil (Modern Foreign Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Available dictionaries involving Afrikaans and German do not satisfactorily deal with collocations. Therefore, this study recommends a theoretically grounded design of a user interface for an electronic dictionary of German collocations for foreign language learners of German whose first language or mother tongue is Afrikaans. In order to be able to do so, a set of requirements is drawn up, upon which the electronic collocations dictionary will be based. On the one hand these requirements give consideration to lexicographic factors relevant to the envisaged dictionary; on the other hand a theoretical basis for the presentation of the electronic dictionary according to usability principles and standards is established. The underlying definition of collocations will be discussed as one of the lexicographic factors constituting the learner dictionary of collocations. Being primarily aimed at Afrikaans speaking foreign language learners of German, their usage situation plays an important role. At an intermediate language learning level topics to be conversed about become increasingly complex. As collocations offer adequate means of expressing these increasingly complex ideas, the learners’ need of collocational knowledge increases, even more with regard to the language production than to the language reception. As collocations are not dealt with adequately in available dictionaries involving Afrikaans and German, there is a definite demand for an adequate dictionary for this user group. The envisaged learner dictionary’s function and type will be determined accordingly. In addition to the lexicographic factors underpinning the design of the user interface, international usability standards DIN EN ISO 9241 (amongst others) and practical recommendations for user interface design by Jakob Nielsen (amongst others) are discussed. This discussion makes provision for the theoretically grounded presentation of the envisaged electronic dictionary of German collocations in line with usability standards. Finally, giving consideration to the set of lexicographic and usability requirements drawn up, a user interface design is recommended for the electronic dictionary for foreign language learners of German whose first language or mother tongue is Afrikaans.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Afrikaans / Duitse woordeboeke wat tans beskikbaar is, bied nie genoegsame inligting oor kollokasies nie.

Abstract:
It is clear that the differences in the Spanish language occur due to its wide geographic distribution and the large number of speakers; this is materialized in the terms designating new realities, as in the case of computing science. For this reason, it was considered appropriate to realize a detailed study that would reveal the different usage of this type of vocabulary in Spanish-speaking countries, from a descriptive and contrastive perspective, that allows to observe all the matches and/or counterpoints in morphological, semantic and discourse aspects of this language for specific purposes. For this investigation, we have accomplished a tracing search of this kind of lexicon in lexicographical sources (general dictionaries, corpora, terminology databases and specialized glossaries), and in textual sources (between 2006 and 2010); the latter ones correspond to two types: digital newspapers and university websites, both from the following twenty-one Spanish speaking countries. With the textual sources, we have assembled a corpus by means of TLCorpus tool by TshwaneDJe, which allows to visualize listings of terms and indicates their frequency of appearance; further on, it also allows searching in a microcontext, as well as extracting examples. Ultimately, in this research we have deepened both into the theoretical and the practical aspect of the lexicon of computing science and Internet in the Hispanic world. We aim to establish it as a valid precendent for further studies and analysis in this field, and also, as the basis for an updated glossary of this type of terms.

Abstract:
Abstract Armchair linguistics does not have a good name in some linguistics circles. A caricature of the armchair linguist is something like this. He sits in a deep soft comfortable armchair, with his eyes closed and his hands clasped behind his head. Once in a while, he opens his eyes, sits up abruptly shouting, “Wow, what a neat fact!”, grabs his pencil, and writes something down. Then he paces around for a few hours in the excitement of having come still closer to knowing what language is really like. (There isn’t anybody exactly like this, but there are some approximations.) Corpus linguistics does not have a good name in some linguistics circles. A caricature of the corpus linguist is something like this. He has all the primary facts that he needs, in the form of a corpus of approximately one zillion running words, and he sees his job as that of deriving secondary facts from his primary facts. At the moment he is busy determining the relative frequencies of the eleven parts of speech as the first word of a sentence versus as the second word of a sentence. (There isn’t anybody exactly like this, but there are some approximations.) These two don’t speak to each other very often, but when they do, the corpus linguist says to the armchair linguist, “Why should I think that what you tell me is true?”, and the armchair linguist says to the corpus linguist, “Why should I think that what you tell me is interesting?” This paper is a report of an armchair linguist who refuses to give up his old ways but who finds profit in being a consumer of some of the resources that corpus linguists have created.

Abstract:
The report will examine the past, present and future of the «Arkhangelsk Regional Dictionary». In the digital age, the nature of collecting materials for the dialect dictionary has changed: instead of field notebooks with recordings "by ear", audio recordings are transcribed. All materials are processed on a computer. Instead of a paper card file, an "electronic card file" appeared. Instead of "paper" dictionaries, their electronic counterparts will soon appear.

Abstract:
We study the fair allocation of mixture of indivisible goods and chores under lexicographic preferences---a subdomain of additive preferences. A prominent fairness notion for allocating indivisible items is envy-freeness up to any item (EFX). Yet, its existence and computation has remained a notable open problem. By identifying a class of instances with "terrible chores", we show that determining the existence of an EFX allocation is NP-complete. This result immediately implies the intractability of EFX under additive preferences. Nonetheless, we propose a natural subclass of lexicographic preferences for which an EFX and Pareto optimal (PO) allocation is guaranteed to exist and can be computed efficiently for any mixed instance. Focusing on two weaker fairness notions, we investigate finding EF1 and Pareto optimal allocations for special instances with terrible chores, and show that MMS and PO allocations can be computed efficiently for any mixed instance with lexicographic preferences.

Abstract:
Very often, we have to look into multiple agents' preferences, and compare or aggregate them. In this paper, we consider the well-known model, namely, lexicographic preference trees (LP-trees), for representing agents' preferences in combinatorial domains. We tackle the problem of calculating the dissimilarity/distance between agents' LP-trees. We propose an algorithm LpDis to compute the number of disagreed pairwise preferences between agents by traversing their LP-trees. The proposed algorithm is computationally efficient and allows agents to have different attribute importance structures and preference dependencies.
