Abstract:
In this paper a modified printed dipole is proposed for mobile terminals operating in the first band of Personal Communication System (PCS) that is ranging from 800 to 900 MHz. One of the most important features of this kind of antenna is its wide bandwidth as required in the mentioned band. The modified design of the proposed antenna allows the user to move in any direction as is usual in mobile communications. The results of this article include an analytical design, simulations that have been performed numerically using a Finite Element Method (FEM) computational tool, structure optimization in order to maximize the antenna bandwidth and experimental measurements with the aim of spatial evaluating of electromagnetic radiated fields.

Abstract:
Every year around 200 million people are affected by hazards of different nature. In most of these situations public protection and disaster relief personnel are usually the first responders to provide help. To provide differential relief coverage in these scenarios, novel communication and network functionalities are being demanded, relegating today’s narrowband private radio (PMR) emergency systems to the background. These are data-support, increased coverage, broadband communication, and high reliability which will be addressed by novel communication technologies such as Long Term Evolution (LTE), LTE Advanced-pro, and future 5G. In this work we tackle two key technological solutions for future emergency communication networks such as an architecture based on relay nodes and enhanced user equipment by means of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) techniques.

Abstract:
This paper presents a concise overview of current public safety communication networks known as LMR (Land Mobile Radio) and emerging LTE- (Long-Term Evolution-) based broadband public safety networks to be deployed in the 700 MHz band. A broadband nationwide network for public safety based on LTE is inevitable where shared or dedicated types of LTE-based public safety networks are possible. Current LTE services do not meet mission-critical requirements and several enhancements have been defined by 3GPP to address this in Releases 12 and 13. First responders are familiar with LMR and consider it to be a reliable technology with massive deployment everywhere. Therefore, it is expected that LMR will continue to exist alongside any new LTE-based broadband public safety network. Recent LTE releases (particularly Release 15) addressed the LMR-LTE interoperability issue and described comprehensive interworking facilities. New and upcoming features and services of LTE in Releases 14 and 15, such as mission-critical data, mission-critical video, and aerial user equipments, are also directly applicable to public safety. The paper endeavours to provide a quick yet meaningful review of all these issues. It also offers a look ahead at the new and rapidly advancing virtualization technologies, such as software-defined radio access network, and radio access network slicing, as enablers for future public safety networks.

Abstract:
In parallel and distributed systems, multistage interconnection network (MIN) plays an important role for its efficient communication between processor and memory at a very low cost. A major class of MIN called Gamma network is known for its redundant network topology and is being used in broadband communication systems. The increased redundancy incorporation makes these networks more complex and hence reliability evaluation becomes complex. The performance evaluation of these network topologies requires reliability evaluation utilizing routing mechanism or techniques. In this paper, we have proposed four topologies of Gamma-Minus network using MUX and DEMUX. Terminal Reliability (TR), fault tolerance and routing schemes of Gamma-Minus network topologies proposed have been computed by utilizing different connection patterns of MUX/DEMUX. Also, performance indices such as TR, Reliability Cost Ratio (RCR), Fault Tolerance, etc. computed for different Gamma-Minus architectures have been compared with the existing Gamma networks, other than Gamma-Minus. All the performance indices for different Gamma-Minus topologies show improvement over the performance indices of different Gamma networks. The proposed Gamma-Minus architectures have been compared among themselves and also Gamma-Minus2 shows the best performance for all performance indices. To the best of our knowledge, most of the researchers have not compared fault tolerance and RCR performance measure.

Abstract:
Problem statement: The proliferation of services and applications requiring ultra-low latency and high reliability of data transmission in communication networks leads to creating new approaches and architectures in order to ensure the simultaneous transmission of Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communication (URLLC) traffic. Providing efficient eMBB and URLLC multiplexing schemes with preset key performance indicators for each stream is the most challenging problem in wireless network development. Purpose: To provide a simultaneous transmission of eMBB and URLLC streams without reducing the user experience of eMBB services by developing a multiplexing scheme and the coherent architecture of physical (PHY) and media access control (MAC) layers in the downlink channel. Results: An eMBB and URLLC multiplexing scheme has been proposed, along with a coherent architecture for PHY and MAC layers, ensuring the given wireless network key performance indicators. The proposed solution performance has been estimated by simulation. The multiplexing scheme outperforms the baseline solution in Bit Error Rate and Frame Error Rate metrics. The coherent PHY and MAC layers architecture provides transmission with an arrival rate of 400 messages per millisecond and 99% message delivery probability in one millisecond. Practical relevance: The obtained results allow communication system developers to deploy centralized wireless networks at industrial objects.

Abstract:
Modern broadband hybrid optical-wireless access networks have gained the attention of academia and industry due to their strategic advantages (cost-efficiency, huge bandwidth, flexibility, and mobility). At the same time, the proliferation of Software Defined Networking (SDN) enables the efficient reconfiguration of the underlying network components dynamically using SDN controllers. Hence, effective traffic-aware schemes are feasible in dynamically determining suitable configuration parameters for advancing the network performance. To this end, a novel machine learning mechanism is proposed for an SDN-enabled hybrid optical-wireless network. The proposed architecture consists of a 10-gigabit-capable passive optical network (XG-PON) in the network backhaul and multiple Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio access networks in the fronthaul. The proposed mechanism receives traffic-aware knowledge from the SDN controllers and applies an adjustment on the uplink-downlink configuration in the LTE radio communication. This traffic-aware mechanism is capable of determining the most suitable configuration based on the traffic dynamics in the whole hybrid network. The introduced scheme is evaluated in a realistic environment using real traffic traces such as Voice over IP (VoIP), real-time video, and streaming video. According to the obtained numerical results, the proposed mechanism offers significant improvements in the network performance in terms of latency and jitter.

Abstract:
Broadband is a public utility with positive effects on competitiveness, employment and growth. Although evidence shows that broadband development is increasing, this increment is not homogeneous between urban and rural areas. The main factor is the high cost for deploying next generation networks in rural areas, and especially the cost linked to civil engineering works. In order to overcome the investment challenges arising in the context of broadband deployment, the European Commission made mandatory the sharing of existing telecommunication and non-telecommunication infrastructures and facilities. This manuscript proposes and presents a novel tool that enables the estimation of the expected savings from exploiting existing infrastructures when deploying a broadband network. This is followed by a number of general principles and recommendations that policy makers and national authorities could embrace to diminish deployment costs and promote broadband deployment.

Abstract:
Ultra-broadband networks are currently attracting significant interests in employing wireless access and optical fiber access to the home and to the building at symbol rate reaching Gb/s. OFDM is a multicarrier modulation technique and considered to offer significant reduction of the data symbol to be carried per carrier channel, especially in ultra-high speed optical communications with bit rate reaching 100 Gb/s or even higher. This paper thus presents a novel and generic OFDM system employing both MATLAB Simulink and FPGA-based development software platform for simulation as well as hardware implementation for the generation and detection of OFDM signals for wireless and optical communications transmission media. Although the transmission medium is modeled with delay distortion filter in the baseband, this model would be valid for passband signals as the amplitude is represented by complex amplitude whose phase would be the phase of the carrier. The Simulink and hardware models presented hereunder are scalable to much higher speed allowing possible implementation in multi-Giga samples per second electronic processors. The sub-systems of the OFDM transmitter and receiver are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of such models for ultra-wideband communication systems such as wireless access and long haul optical fiber communication backbone networks.

Abstract:
This paper analytically reviews the performance of massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system for communication in highly mobility scenarios like high speed Railways. As popularity of high speed train increasing day by day, high data rate wireless communication system for high speed train is extremely required. 5G wireless communication systems must be designed to meet the requirement of high speed broadband services at speed of around 500 km/h, which is the expected speed achievable by HSR systems, at a data rate of 180 Mbps or higher. Significant challenges of high mobility communications are fast time-varying fading, channel estimation errors, doppler diversity, carrier frequency offset, inter carrier interference, high penetration loss and fast and frequent handovers. Therefore, crucial requirement to design high mobility communication channel models or systems prevails. Recently, massive MIMO techniques have been proposed to significantly improve the performance of wireless networks for upcoming 5G technology. Massive MIMO provide high throughput and high energy efficiency in wireless communication channel. In this paper, key findings, challenges and requirements to provide high speed wireless communication onboard the high speed train is pointed out after thorough literature review. In last, future research scope to bridge the research gap by designing efficient channel model by using massive MIMO and other optimization method is mentioned.

Abstract:
In order to support multimedia communication, it is necessary to develop routing algorithms that make decisions based on multiple Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. This is because new services such as video on demand and remote meeting systems have multiple QoS requirements. However, the problem of QoS routing is difficult because finding a feasible route with two independent path constraints is NP-complete problem. Also, QoS routing algorithms for broadband networks must be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent for efficient network management. In this paper, we propose a multi-purpose optimization method for QoS routing based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). The simulation results show that the proposed method has a good performance and therefore is a promising method for QoS routing.

Abstract:
single-carrier (SC) modulation with frequency-domain equalization (FDE) combined with iterative (turbo) FDE schemes has been shown to be suitable for cyclic-prefix (CP)-assisted block transmission within broadband wireless systems. Its excellent performance in severely time-dispersive channels, makes it a promising candidate for future broadband wireless systems. In this paper we investigated the impact of the correlation factor estimation in the performance of iterative block decision feedback equalization (IB-DFE) receivers. Since the correlation factor represents a key parameter to ensure the good performance of these receivers, reliable estimates of this factor are needed in the feedback loop. We present several methods to estimate the correlation coefficient. We also propose a technique to compensate the inaccuracy of the estimation.

Abstract:
This paper considers broadband potential of distribution Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) networks when different well-known noise models of the BPL literature are applied. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, the seven most representative and used noise models of the BPL literature are synopsized in this paper. With reference to this set, the broadband performance of a great number of distribution BPL topologies either Overhead (OV) or Underground (UN), either Medium-Voltage (MV) or Low-Voltage (LV), is investigated in terms of suitable capacity metrics. Second, based on the proposed capacity metrics, a comparative capacity analysis is performed among various well-validated noise models. Through the careful study of its results, it is demonstrated that during capacity computations of distribution BPL networks, the flat Additive White Gaussian Noise (FL noise model) can be comfortably assumed as an efficient noise model either in 3–30 MHz or in 3–88 MHz frequency range since its capacity differences with the other well-proven noise models are negligible.

Abstract:
Information, Communication and Media Markets (ICMM) are in a process of tremendous change. IP-based technologies and services such as broadband and triple/quadruple-play are realities that have the ability to enforce the convergence of so far parallel industries, that is, Telephony, Internet, and Broadcast. In this paper, the authors derive a scenario where a telecom operator aims to design, develop, and validate a global B3G (Beyond 3rd Generation) framework to support secure, personalized, and pervasive telecommunications services built on heterogeneous network and service infrastructures. The authors rethink the telecommunications architecture and business models to enable easy, seamless, and pervasive access to content and services, while supporting user preferences and context. This proposal involves significant changes in current industry business models. A value chain approach allows the identification of different scenarios, where the firm faces several options from which to choose. The authors investigate operators’ decision process and evaluates the project based on its flexibility, using a real option approach.
