The research conducted for this thesis investigated the theoretical placement of electrodes for a proposed implantable vestibular prosthesis to aid patients suffering from balance related disorders. The most likely sites of stimulation for the first-generation of such a device are the peripheral nerves responsible for transmitting rotational information to the brain. Although stimulation of such nerves has been performed in human and animal patients, little is known about the mechanisms responsible for the eliciting nerve responses. Models of the inferior and superior divisions of peripheral vestibular nerve were created to characterize the stimulus threshold behavior across the parameters of fiber diameter and location within the nerve. Current-distance relations were derived for nerve fibers excited by six commonly used electrode configurations. The threshold relations were used as a guide to determine the electrode configuration and location best-suited to stimulate the inferior vestibular nerve and selectively stimulate the branches of the superior vestibular nerve. The criteria used determine optimal placement included minimum current thresholds, configuration simplicity, and distance to the electrode. For the inferior nerve case, a cathodal stimulus located at a distance of 100 pm or 200 ym from the nerve and driven with a stimulus current of 56 pA or 76 pIA was recommended. For the superior vestibular nerve case we were interested in selectively stimulating each branch, imposing a further criteria to maximize the threshold ratio between stimulation of the respective branches. A transverse dipole electrode configurations was suggested that allowed selective stimulation of either branch. The configuration included a cathode located 300m from Branch 1 and an anode centrally located between both branches.
(cont.) When driven with a cathodal stimulus of strength 51 pA, only Branch I was excited, while driving both electrodes with a magnitude of 106 jIA excited only Branch II. The proximity to the facial nerve was considered in the choices

Ion, Adina Izabela. "Computer aided detection and measurement of peripheral arterial diseases from CTA images." Thesis, Kingston University, 2013. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/26273/.

Full text
Abstract:
Peripheral Arterial Disease (pAD) afflicts more than 2.7 million people in the U.K. per year, and it is projected to increase rapidly within the current decade. PAD is a product of obstruction (stenosis or occlusion) of vessels feeding the body's extremities, and it is most often encountered in the lower extremities. Treatment of the disease is dependent on the specific anatomic segments afflicted, the degree of stenosis and its length. A common technique for imaging PAD is Computed Tomography-Angiography (CTA). The acquired CTA images are then investigated by a radiologist for disease assessment. However due to the large size of the PAD CTA datasets (1000-2000 slices) the radiologist's examination is time consuming and laborious. This project brings a contribution to the investigation of PAD in CTA datasets by the development of a tool for the radiologist, a fully automatic system for the detection and measurement of PAD, as currently there are no such systems efficacious for the disease. The proposed system is comprised of two components: a Computer Aided Detection (CAD) component and a Computer Aided Measurement (CAM) component. The CAD component is designed for artery segmentation and stenosis detection. The stage of artery segmentation is accomplished by using a 3D region growing method and an innovative 3D fast morphology operation. CAD methodologies commonly employ morphological operations as a tool in the segmentation process, along with extended series of CTA images. This large dataset requires careful attention to be paid towards optimizing the computational process in terms of time efficiency. In order to meet this goal, an optimized morphology algorithm is presented, which reduces the computation time by a factor of 10. A skeletonization based centreline technique is applied on the detected artery, and it then provides the basis for the measurement stage. Orthogonal planes to the centreline are used in order to obtain cross sectional images. The artery profile is then built based on vessel areas measured in the cross sectional images and an automated process of stenosis detection is performed. The CAM component of the system accurately measures and quantifies the stenosis and overcomes the challenge brought by the partial volume effect. In this respect, a hybrid method for partial volume correction is employed locally, on the candidate areas of stenosis detected by the CAD component, based on Maximum a Posterior (MAP) and Markov Random Field (MRF) expectation maximization method. The CAD-CAM system has been successfully implemented and applied on phantom and patient data (twenty data sets from The University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV)) and the evaluation was carried out through the visual judgment of two experienced radiologists. Within the CAD component, the artery segmentation was evaluated and a total of 15 peripheral arterial trees were correctly extracted. The proposed stenosis detection method was evaluated on 525 arterial segments (each dataset was partitioned into 35 segments) from which 132 exhibited stenosis caused by soft plaque. The system achieved a sensitivity of 88% and a specificity of 96%. The CAM component has been evaluated using phantom data, and the average error of the diameter measurement was 8%.

Accessing printed text in mobile situations is inconvenient for people with visual impairments. Existing smartphone technologies often require refined aiming and focusing actions that prove difficult for the target user group to perform. In an attempt to mitigate these issues, the FingerReader was developed to assist in reading printed text. This thesis discusses the evolution of the FingerReader to the MobiReader, a mobile version of its predecessor meant to extend its potential as a pocketable, assistive reading device. Abstract:
The growing use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in college campuses has dramatically increased the potential for multitasking among students who have to juggle classes, school assignments, work, and recreational activities. These students believe that they have become more efficient by performing two or more tasks simultaneously. The use of technology, however, has changed the student’s ability to focus and attend to what they need to learn. Research has shown that multitasking divides students’ attention, which could have a negative impact on their cognition and learning. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of distractive multitasking on students’ attention and academic performance in a classroom setting. Several studies in cognitive psychology have focused on individuals’ divided attention between simultaneously occurring tasks. Such research has found that, because human attention and capacity to process information are selective and limited, a performance decrement often results when task performance requires divided attention. Distractive tasks are defined as tasks or activities for which cognitive resources are used to process information that is not related to the course material. Multitasking is defined as the engagement in individual tasks that are performed in succession through a process of context switching. Using a non-experimental, correlational research design, the researcher examined the effects of distractive multitasking, with computer devices, during classroom lectures, on students’ academic performance. This study used a monitoring system to capture data that reflected actual multitasking behaviors from students who used computers while attending real-time classroom lectures. The findings showed that there was no statistically significant relationship between the frequency of distractive multitasking (predictor variable) and academic performance (criterion variable), as measured by the midterm and final evaluation scores. The results did not support the hypothesis that distractive computer-based multitasking could have a negative impact on academic performance.

Reverberation poses a challenge for theories of sound localization due to the interaction between the direct sound and the various acoustic reflections. These reflections corrupt binaural cues available to the receiver, resulting in a degradation of directional information available in the acoustic stimulus. Despite this interaction, directionally-sensitive neural responses in the auditory midbrain have been shown to be more robust to reverberation than predicted by a binaural model based on the long- term cross-correlation of the two ear-input signals (Devore et al., 2009, Neuron 63(1), pp 123-134). To determine the extent to which this robustness is central or peripheral in origin, and to quantitatively investigate whether peripheral adaptation contributes to this robustness, we recorded auditory nerve (AN) responses to tokens of noise with varying levels of simulated reverberation. We found many qualitatively similar trends in AN responses as have been previously observed in the midbrain, suggesting a peripheral origin of robust directional coding. In particular, we found that degradation of directional coding in the AN due to reverberation is stronger at high frequencies, and that this degradation is limited near the stimulus onset. We also show that peripheral adaptation plays a positive role in increasing robustness of directional representation in the presence of reverberation. We also investigated the nature of the frequency dependence observed in the degradation of directional coding due to reverberation. Based on our experimental results and the results of an auditory model, we argue that in addition to being affected by AN fibers' synchrony to stimulus fine structure, the frequency dependence is also produced by temporal structure of the reverberant room response.

Abstract:
This research presents an approach to transition from manual to automated testing of hardware specific firmware. The manual approach for firmware testing can be repetitive and time consuming. A significant proportion of the time is spent on cleaning and re-installing operating systems so that old firmware does not interfere with the newer firmware that is being tested. The approach in this research utilizes virtual machines and presents an automation framework. One component of the automation framework is an application to imitate connected peripheral devices to bypass hardware dependencies of firmware installers. The framework also consists of automation and pipeline scripts with the objective to execute firmware installers and detect errors and abnormalities in the installation and updating processes. The framework can run on locally hosted virtual machines, but is most applicable using cloud hosted virtual machines, where it is part of a continuous integration that builds, downloads, installs, updates and tests new firmware versions, in a completely automated manner. The framework is evaluated by measuring and comparing execution times with manually conducted installation and updating tests, and the result shows that the framework complete tests much faster than the manual approach. Another evaluation in terms of scalability is made where speedup is measured. It is however concluded that scalability does not necessarily depend on the performance and resource allocation of systems, but rather how well it can be expanded and used for future devices and functionalities.

Abstract:
One problem with computers is that the operating system automatically trusts any externallyconnected peripheral. This can result in abuse when a peripheral technically can violate the security model because the peripheral is trusted. Because of that the security is an important issue to look at.The aim of our project is to see in which cases hardware peripherals can be trusted. We built amodel of the universal asynchronous transmitter/receiver (UART), a model of the main memory(RAM) and a model of a DMA controller. We analysed interaction between hardware peripherals, user processes and the main memory. One of our results is that connections with hardware peripherals are secure if the hardware is properly configured. A threat scenario could be an eavesdropper or man-in-the-middle trying to steal data or change a cryptographic key.We consider the use-cases of DMA and protecting a cryptographic key. We prove the well-behavior of the algorithm. Some error-traces resulted from incorrect modelling that was resolved by adjusting the models. Benchmarks were done for different memory sizes. The result is that a peripheral can be trusted provided a configuration is done. Our models consist of finite state machines and their corresponding SMV modules. The models represent computer hardware with DMA. We verified the SMV models using the model checkers NuSMV and nuXmv.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to develop a computer-aided detection system for prostate cancer within the peripheral zone, based on single modality T2-W Magnetic Resonance Imaging. As the most diagnosed and second leading cause of death from cancer in men, prostate cancer is a significant health problem globally. In fact, considering the deficiencies in current clinical screening methods, there is a need for a rapid development of MRI technologies and computer algorithms to better detect prostate cancer. In this thesis, we developed one unsupervised, and two supervised computer algorithms, using different texture descriptors involving different resolutions, filters, techniques and orientations. For classification purposes, we investigated 11 machine learning algorithms to build predictive models. This thesis also investigated the effects of window sizes for all performance metrics. In the proposed unsupervised method a small number of texture descriptors were used to differentiate benign and malignant regions. Subsequently, the fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm was employed to segment malignant regions. The resulting binary segmentations were then combined to find overlapping regions with the highest probability of being malignant. In contrast, the two supervised methods were based on 215 texture descriptors and textons. Both methods used the same machine learning algorithms in the training and classification phases. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methods, the unsupervised and supervised methods were tested based on 37 (275 MRI images) and 45 (418 MRI images) patients, respectively. The performance evaluations showed that the results of all methods were comparable with the state-of-the-art in the literature in terms of area under the curve, classification accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. The contributions of this thesis are three-fold. First, we developed novel supervised and unsupervised computer-aided detection systems for prostate cancer, which are different from those produced hitherto, in the sense of our methods exploit different combinations of texture descriptors and machine learning algorithms. In fact, this thesis is the first study which has thoroughly investigated textons in prostate cancer detection. Secondly, this thesis made an extensive investigation into the effects of window size, both on the methods and feature's performance itself. Thirdly, we provide an extensive quantitative comparison of the performances of 11 machine learning algorithms and a thorough qualitative comparison between our results and the state-of-the-art in the literature.

Fourteen volunteers were asked to participate in an experiment, along with answering a survey, toevaluate the performance of three peripherals: the Xbox 360 Wired Controller, a keyboard, and theRock Band Fender Stratocaster Wired Guitar Controller. The participants played a prototype madein Unity, and their accuracy scores were analyzed in R using ANOVA. However, no significantquantifiable difference was found based on which peripheral was being used. The scores were alsoanalyzed using Pearson's Product-Moment correlation, and we were able to determine that thevariation in accuracy scores was directly linked to the participant's specific test run in theexperiment. Taking this into consideration along with results of our observational data andparticipant feedback, we found that there were more factors at play, in regards to playability andaccuracy, than just the input device itself. The learning effect of repetitive play of the prototype andinput devices, the control input scheme, and the participant's chosen peripheral manipulationmethod all had an impact.

Abstract:
With the rapid proliferation of small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), the risk of mid-air collisions is growing, as is the risk associated with the malicious use of these systems. The airborne detect-and-avoid (ABDAA) problem and the counter-UAS problem have similar sensing requirements for detecting and tracking airborne threats. In this dissertation, two image-based sensing methods are merged to mimic human vision in support of counter-UAS applications. In the proposed sensing system architecture, a ``peripheral vision'' camera (with a fisheye lens) provides a large field-of-view while a ``central vision'' camera (with a perspective lens) provides high resolution imagery of a specific object. This pair form a heterogeneous stereo vision system that can support range resolution. A novel peripheral-central vision (PCV) system to detect, localize, and classify an airborne threat is first introduced. To improve the developed PCV system's capability, three novel algorithms for the PCV system are devised: a model-based path prediction algorithm for fixed-wing unmanned aircraft, a multiple threat scheduling algorithm considering not only the risk of threats but also the time required for observation, and the heterogeneous stereo-vision optimal placement (HSOP) algorithm providing optimal locations for multiple PCV systems to minimize the localization error of threat aircraft. The performance of algorithms is assessed using an experimental data set and simulations.

Abstract:
The thesis investigates two fundamental dynamics of participation and collaboration in mature, community-led Free/Open Source (F/OS) software projects - commercialization and peripheral participation. The aim of the thesis is to examine whether the power relations that underlie the F/OS model of development are indicative of a new form of power relations supported by ICTs. Theoretically, the thesis is located within the Communities of Practice (CoP) literature and it draws upon Michel Foucault's ideas about the historical and relational character of power. It also mobilizes, to a lesser extent, Erving Goffman's notion of `face-work'. This framework supports a methodology that questions the rationality of how F/OS is organized and examines the relations between employed coders and volunteers, experienced and inexperienced coders, and programmers and nonprogrammers. The thesis examines discursive and structural dimensions of collaboration and employs quantitative and qualitative methods. Structural characteristics are considered in the light of arguments about embeddedness. The thesis contributes insights into how the gift economy is embedded in the exchange economy and the role of peripheral contributors. The analysis indicates that community-integrated paid developers have a key role in project development, maintaining the infrastructure aspects of the code base. The analysis suggests that programming and non-programming contributors are distinct in their make-up, priorities and rhythms of participation, and that learning plays an important role in controlling access. The results show that volunteers are important drivers of peripheral activities, such as translation and documentation. The term `autonomous peripherality' is used to capture the unique characteristics of these activities. These findings support the argument that centrality and peripherality are associated with the division of labour, which, in turn, is associated with employment relations and frameworks of institutional support. The thesis shows how the tensions produced by commercialization and peripheral participation are interwoven with values of meritocracy, ritual and strategic enactment of the idea of community as well as with tools and techniques developed to address the emergence of a set of problems specific to management and governance. These are characterized as `technologies of communities'. It is argued that the emerging topology of F/OS participation, seen as a `relational meshwork', is indicative of a redefinition of the relationship between sociality and economic production within mature, community-led F/OS projects.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to investigate the human nociceptive system at the peripheral level. Researchers are still debating how the pain perception arises from this very intricate network. The human perception is the most elusive part of our knowledge since different subsystems are involved. The external information such as noxious stimuli must be processed at the peripheral level and through signal cascades and transduction this signal must reach the brain. At the brain level the information is processed and some decisions are taken, such as the well-known fight-or-flight response. In the introduction, the author describes how the human nociceptive system works and in which way the noxious stimulus is converted into a signal understandable by the brain. Several cortical and subcortical areas are involved in this signal processing and going deeper in this assembly line the information becomes more abstracted. The whole pathway is fundamental for pain perception, however some diseases start at the peripheral level. This in turn makes wrong signals reaching the brain. The brain is then processing information that are not real and the responses do not suit with the needs. Therefore, the peripheral system must be investigated and understood firstly, since some central diseases may have a peripheral component as well. With this purpose in mind the microneurography technique has been used. This technique has got some complexity and a computer-aided system must be implemented. The hardware aims to filter out the noisy signal and perform recording and stimulation of the neural fibers. The software is instead used to make the stimulation and recording as automatic as possible in a way that researchers do not have to deal with a lot of parameters and steps to carry out this powerful but also time consuming technique. Some software are already available in the market however even if they work fine with slow conduction fibers such as C-fibers they cannot cope with faster neurons (e.g. Aδ fibers). The aim of this work is to create a software (i.e. SPiike) able to stimulate and record every type of fibers implementing advanced analysis technique as well. Furthermore, considering that some in vivo experiments have been pursued within the project to check the functionality of the software, more specifically in rats and mice, the comparison between human nociceptors and mouse nociceptors is depicted in this section. In the method section, the experimental approach is described step by step. This is composed by several systems that work together for the stimulation, recording and analysis of the neural fibers. The control and acquisition module is composed by the software and a data acquisition board that trigger the stimulator and record the filtered signal. The stimulation module is composed by a stimulator that can be tuned as wish through dedicated knobs. Then the stimulus is delivered to the animal model (or the human patient) and the signal is recorded though a microelectrode inserted into the sciatic nerve. The amplification module is filtering out the noisy signal and is feeding a audio monitor for helping the researcher during the insertion of the electrode inside the nerve and it provides support during the whole experiment giving insights on fiber discharges. In this section the whole setup is described in details as well as the devices needed for the recording. Furthermore, the software development that is the core of this project is described as well, with all the considerations that must be considered during coding. Indeed, the flow chart must be followed methodically in order to minimize bugs and errors that may arise in the final product. Thus a description of the compiler and the Matlab IDE is given along with system and software requirements for the making of the SPiike software. Eventually the explanation of embedded functionalities and capabilities of SPiike is depicted in the final part of this section. This software is indeed able to stimulate slow conducting fibers as well as faster ones, and enhanced analysis techniques such as supervised machine learning are implemented. In the results section, the graphical user interface of the Spiike software is reveled. It resembles the one of another software already available in the market, with a filtered signal and a raster plot embedded on it. However, this software is more user-friendly and it accounts with icons and drop-down menus that enhance the experience of the users during the use of the tool, making their interactions smooth and intuitive. The SPiike software is subdivide into two different tools, a recording module and a analysis module. The former allows the stimulation and recording of neural fibers with a stimulation frequency up to 1000Hz and some online analysis can be conducted to have insights on fibers type and behavior. The analysis module is instead a more powerful analysis environment that can retrieve the dataset recorded with the other module or with the LabChart software. Advanced analysis techniques are implemented in this module, this is meant to speed up fiber classification and analysis. Conclusion and discussion provide a overview on some results. These will be compared to those obtainable through other software available in the market. In this section, pros and cons of the new implemented software, SPiike, will be described as well.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to understand how informal awareness, the presence and availability information of coworkers, can be provided in remote contexts through technology. Based on a workplace study, it was discovered that informal communication is an important part of work and is inadequately supported by current technology. Through research, it was suggested that information on presence and availability is that which facilitates informal communication. In order to design for this situation, this thesis features six interactive peripheral display prototypes which seek to provide informal awareness in an unobtrusive and effortless way to geographically distributed coworkers. Going beyond monitors, these prototypes seek to utilize natural human sensory-motor capabilities to ease perception and interaction. The results suggest such devices are appropriate at mediating awareness and have the potential to facilitate informal communication.

Abstract:
With the growth of ubiquitous computing, people are getting familiar and receptive to the idea of using non personal devices in public spaces. An example of such a possible device are the large ambient displays which can be found in airports, subway stations, malls, and bus stops. While most of these devices are not interactive, some offer interaction through touchscreen. This study explored the impact of body-movement-based interaction on engagement of a peripheral information display. We developed and exhibited two versions of the same peripheral information display in a public space. The first version offered interactivity while no interaction was available in the second version. We counted the number of people who watched/interacted with the displays and timed how long they spent doing so. Qualitative data was also gathered through semi structured interviews and non-participant observations. The statistical analysis provide evidences that the mean time spent watching/interacting with the peripheral information display is higher when there is interaction. We are 95% confident that the interval from 0.25 to 13.71 seconds contains the difierence of mean time spent watching/interacting with the display between the two versions. The interviews and observations indicated that the interaction implemented is easily understandable by the public in few seconds without the need of instructions.

Abstract:
This study explores the design space of motocross within Human-Computer Interaction with focus on warning riders of danger while practicing unsupervised. Using autobiographical design, the aim was to investigate mechanisms and modalities suitable for motocross where the environment, tracks, physical and mental load on the riders were some of the challenges faced. With basis in research within other sports and a domain expert focus group, a prototype was developed and iterated over a period of three months using the author and recruited participants as riders. The process was documented using a diary. The study concluded that using the helmet as mounting point was effective due to not being intrusive for the riders and no track alterations were needed to implement the system for real use. Visual feedback using light mounted under the visor showed to be unreliable due to sun interference, while sound created by vibrations on the top of the helmet shown to be suitable for warning motocross riders. Using visual and auditory modalities together, the light was concluded to be efficient as an information display when attention was brought to the rider by the vibration sound.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis is a resource document for computer information that is not presently available as a single unit. It describes most of the commonly available computer peripherals and some not-so-common ones from the micro, mini, and mainframe computer worlds. Physical descriptions, methods of operation, trouble shooting, maintenance, and some schematics and future trends are covered. A few older devices having historical significance are also discussed.By knowing where the computer industry is currently and seeing where it has been hardware-wise, it should be possible to project the direction in which the computer industry is headed. People in the computer profession and people that use computers need to be educated about peripheral devices so that they may make informed decisions on which equipment to acquire and in planning for the future. This thesis should be a valuable aid in this process. The information presented should save time and money during the decision-making process and lead to more effective choices of equipment.

While the scientific press brims with descriptions of state-of-the-art projects using the latest technology to produce huge amounts of data, little attention is given to the system requirements that result when Terabytes of data are generated. This paper examines the affect on telemetry, and replay/analysis systems and the necessary integration of high-speed digital tape recorders in such systems. Specifically, it considers how the tape recorder interfaces to the computer system, how the interface is integrated into the computer’s I/O architecture, and how much the user can expect in performance.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis of this dissertation is that, despite widespread belief in the security community, systems are still vulnerable to attacks from malicious peripherals delivered over the PCI Express (PCIe) protocol. Malicious peripherals can be plugged directly into internal PCIe slots, or connected via an external Thunderbolt connection. To prove this thesis, we designed and built a new PCIe attack platform. We discovered that a simple platform was insufficient to carry out complex attacks, so created the first PCIe attack platform that runs a full, conventional OS. To allows us to conduct attacks against higher-level OS functionality built on PCIe, we made the attack platform emulate in detail the behaviour of an Intel 82574L Network Interface Controller (NIC), by using a device model extracted from the QEMU emulator. We discovered a number of vulnerabilities in the PCIe protocol itself, and with the way that the defence mechanisms it provides are used by modern OSs. The principal defence mechanism provided is the Input/Output Memory Management Unit (IOMMU). The remaps the address space used by peripherals in 4KiB chunks, and can prevent access to areas of address space that a peripheral should not be able to access. We found that, contrary to belief in the security community, the IOMMUs in modern systems were not designed to protect against attacks from malicious peripherals, but to allow virtual machines direct access to real hardware. We discovered that use of the IOMMU is patchy even in modern operating systems. Windows effectively does not use the IOMMU at all; macOS opens windows that are shared by all devices; Linux and FreeBSD map windows into host memory separately for each device, but only if poorly documented boot flags are used. These OSs make no effort to ensure that only data that should be visible to the devices is in the mapped windows. We created novel attacks that subverted control flow and read private data against systems running macOS, Linux and FreeBSD with the highest level of relevant protection enabled. These represent the first use of the relevant exploits in each case. In the final part of this thesis, we evaluate the suitability of a number of proposed general purpose and specific mitigations against DMA attacks, and make a number of recommendations about future directions in IOMMU software and hardware.

Mixed Reality (MR) technology allows us to seamlessly merge real and virtual worlds to create new experiences and environments. MR includes technologies such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. Even though this technology has been around for several years, it is just starting to become available to an average consumer with the introduction of devices such as the HTC Vive and the Microsoft Hololens. This thesis consists of the design, implementation and evaluation of three projects that highlight a novel experience in mixed reality using existing sensors and peripherals. VRoom describes a simple and novel approach to 3D room scanning using only an HTC Vive and 360 camera. Mathland is a mixed reality application that enables users to interact with math and physics using a stretch sensor, IMU and camera. ARPiano is an augmented MIDI keyboard that offers a different approach to music learning by adding intuitive visuals and annotations.

Al, Gohani Fahad. "Comparison of peripheral quantitative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging for tissue characterisation in the gastrocnemius muscle." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/102032/.

Full text
Abstract:
Rupture of the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle (GM) is a common injury of the calf muscles. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound (US) are the medical imaging modalities that are usually used to assess such injuries. Texture analysis is a digital image processing technique that quantifies the relationship between pixel intensities (grey levels) and pixel positions. Texture can reveal valuable information that cannot be perceived by the naked eye. Dedicated image processing software is required to extract texture parameters. Texture analysis has been implemented for medical imaging modalities such as MRI, US and computed tomography (CT) for the evaluation sports muscle injury. Peripheral quantitative tomography (pQCT) is an adaptation of conventional CT. In this project, texture analysis was implemented on MRI and pQCT images of the gastrocnemius muscle (GM). MRI is an expensive technique that requires specialised facilities. Conversely, pQCT utilises a small-bore, low-dose X-ray scanner, which is portable and less costly than MRI. It has traditionally been used mainly for bone analysis. The aim of this study was to assess the suitability of pQCT for GM tissue characterisation using texture analysis compared with MRI. The study is novel in that it is the first to apply texture analysis to GM images using pQCT Texture analysis was done on image data acquired from MRI (GE, 1.5T) and pQCT (Stratec XCT 2000) in a group of healthy human subjects and an injured subject. A water phantom was also scanned with pQCT. An existing standard imaging protocol was observed for MRI acquisition, while pQCT image acquisition parameters were explored and optimised to yield a standard protocol. The pQCT scanner was shown to be capable of acquiring calf muscle images and distinguishing calf muscle boundaries. Texture parameters (grey level, variance, skewness, kurtosis, co-occurrence matrix, run length matrix, gradient, autoregressive (AR) model and wavelet transform) were extracted from the acquired images. The repeatability of these quantities for pQCT in a healthy human subject and a water phantom was assessed by calculating the coefficient of variation (%CV). The effect of pQCT parameters (scan speed and pixel size) was tested using multiple variate II analysis of variance (MANOVA). The effect of region of interest (ROI) area and anatomical position were evaluated using simple linear regression. The t-test was used to compare the mean values of the texture features in the right and left leg for both MRI and pQCT in a group of healthy human subjects. Neither MRI nor pQCT showed significant differences between the two legs for any of the texture features. In addition, there was no significant difference between the two modalities for the AR model and wavelet transform texture parameters. Reference ranges for the medial head of the GM were defined for both modalities. A study of a single injured subject revealed that the values of the AR model texture parameter fell outside the reference ranges for both MRI and pQCT, and so the AR model was identified as the most sensitive texture parameter for distinguishing injured from uninjured GM. The principal conclusion from this work is that pQCT has the potential to be used for imaging the gastrocnemius muscle and that GM images from both MRI and pQCT scanners can be objectively characterised by texture analysis. In addition, the autoregressive model texture parameter may be the most appropriate for muscle characterisation.

This paper presents the suppression effects of electromagnetic waves radiated from computer peripheral equipments. In general, some of the most difficult and frustrating problems faced by design engineer concern elimination of noise from their circuits or systems. However, solutions to noise problems are found by trial and error with little understanding of mechanisms which is involved. In this paper we will present the techniques which are useful for decreasing interference. The approach used in the paper covers the three primary means of noise control such as grounding, shielding, filtering techniques. Decisions on which techniques should be used are thing that must be determined by the system design engineer. Finally, the result of these experiments shows that electromagnetic radiation from computer peripheral equipments can be effectively suppressed by such techniques and it was expected that they would provide having 6dB improvement or greater.

The research applied data envelopment analysis and ranked 91 computer peripheral companies according to the Standard Industrial Classification System of the Republic of China. Each company’s quarterly financial statements and related information from 2011 to 2015 were collected from the Market Observation Post System and Taiwan Economic Journal. After analyzing and comparing their Market Value Added (MVA), Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was conducted to calculate efficiency values. The study selected operating costs, the numbers of employees , fixed assets and total liabilities as input variables, with MVA as output variables, to calculate efficiency values for each computer peripheral company. Then the shareholdings ratios of directors, large shareholders and managers, as well as R&D and other variables of categories for computer peripheral industry were used as independent variables to analyze the efficiency values. The results of this research are as follows: The number of employees, operating costs, fixed assets and total liabilities had positive correlation with MVA. In the large shareholder’s ratio would be positive impact on operation efficiency but directors’ shareholdings ratio would be negative impact on operation efficiency. The operation efficiency in manufacturers of monitors and terminals would be better than manufacturers of other computer peripheral equipment and manufacturers of computers. Additionally, R&D ratio is positive impact on operation efficiency.

E-business is essential to business competitiveness, especially in Taiwan where lacks natural resources on one hand and highly dependant on industrial export on the other. The foundation of a successful e-business lies in the intra-infrastructure of the business, including both an integrated hardware network and a complete software system. Nevertheless, how to select appropriate software has always been a dilemma for many local enterprises. Many Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system vendors always claim that their solutions are the best of all, but there are still many failure cases when adopting their systems. It is common for local enterprises to employ package software designed by foreign ERP vendors, but it is also popular for others to use one designed by local vendors too. Generally speaking, some of enterprises in Taiwan have had successful ERP implementation, while others have had an ineffective on-line performance, and still some others have failed completely. Among many of the implementation cases in Taiwan, many information technology/information system (IT/IS) professionals learn lessons from their numerous failures and mistakes. Besides, the ERP research in the academia tends to be conducted mainly by questionnaires. In other words, the case study method is rarely engaged. Therefore, this study aims to provide local enterprises with references of ERP implementation by means of a case study. Basically, there are three stages for a successful ERP implementation: the evaluation, the installment, and the maintenance stages. This study aims to explore important issues of the first two stages and to analyze the situations confronted by local enterprises in the first two stages. In the end, this research hopes to provide useful and helpful references of ERP implementation for local enterprises and their IT/IS personnel when they undergo the processes of selecting and implementing ERP systems.

Microcirculation is a fundamental unit of the human circulatory system, responsible for transporting oxygen and nutrition to all tissues. If the perfusion in peripheral microcirculation is not enough, vascular abnormality and even tissue necrosis will be caused. Thus, it is necessary to early quantify the microcirculatory reactivity. The thesis established one assessment system for quantifying the reactivity of the peripheral microcirculation. We recruited 25 healthy subjects to participate three items of lower-extremity physiological stress, including the local heating, the arterial occlusion, and the Valsalva maneuver. The laser Doppler Flowmetry (LDF) was used to record the microvascular LDF oscillation signals on the surface of the foot bottom. The LDF signals were analyzed by both the time-domain techniques, and the frequency-time methods (including the fast Fourier transform, FFT and the wavelet transform,WT). In the thesis, six specific frequency bands that governed the microcirculatory characteristicswere further explored. The six bands (0.005 to 2.0 Hz) were associated with the cardiac activity(0.6-2.0Hz), the respiratory activity(0.15-0.6Hz), the myogenic activity(0.05-0.15 Hz), the sympathetic activity(0.021-0.05Hz), the endothelial NO-dependent metabolic activity(0.0095-0.021Hz) and theendothelial non-NO-dependent metabolic activity(0.005-0.0095Hz), respectively. In the time-domain analysis, both the initial peak and the plateau values in the LDF signalswithin the 30-min local heating course (up to 44oC) were found to be significantly greater than the 10-min baseline amplitude. Also, the composite vasodilatation indexes corresponding to the initial peak and the plateau periods were 154564 % and 23993 %, respectively. In the 3-min arterial occlusion, the amplitude (7655 PU) of LDF signals smaller in the 10-min baselinewas significantly than that (214116 PU)in thereactive period, but greater than that (4.124 PU) in the occlusion period (all p<0.05). Meanwhile, the composite vasodilatation and vasoconstriction indexes were found to be 217213 % and 926 %, respectively. In the FFT analysis, the LDF signals recorded in the reactive period after 3-min occlusion had significantly greater cardiac activity-related spectral power density area and average power density than those in the 10-min baseline (4.907.18 vs. 0.300.56, p<0.05;57.026.2 vs. 21.618.2, p<0.05). In the WT analysis, the LDF signals recorded in the heating period had significantly less endothelial NO-nondependent activity-related average power percentage (13±12%) than that (15±13%) in the 10-min baseline (p<0.05). Furthermore, an analog circuit that modeled the lower extremity circulatory system was established to study the effect of lower extremity arterial occlusion on the peripheral microcirculation. In conclusion, a measuring system for quantifying the reactivity of the peripheral microcirculation is constructed. Through the lower-extremity physiological stress and with the FFT and WT methods, we are able to observe the change in the six special mechanisms in the regulation of microcirculation before and after stimulation, by assessing their composite and individual microvascular reactivity. This may help us to quantify the endothelial function of microcirculation, and then to diagnose its initial dysfunction. Furthermore, the proposed Lower limb circulation model can be used to investigate the role of individual hemodynamic parameter and its effect on the blood pressure and flow in the circulation model.

Abstract:
In this thesis an eye-directed controller is developed that slaves the narrow field display within a split-foveal-peripheral-display system to the operator's gaze position. A neural network controller is proposed that directly maps the gaze position to the narrow field projection co-ordinates without the need for any axis or co-ordinate transformations. A novel image feature-extraction algorithm, for extraction of the pupil-purkinje difference measure, has been developed that exhibits robust and reproducible real-time performance. By providing foveal and peripheral vision in a far-field teleoperator through the eye-directed split-foveal-peripheral-display, visual information is sufficiently and naturally provided for the establishment of telepresence.

Because of the fast changing customer demand, the shortened life cycle of commodity and the severe global competition, the market competition is becoming more unstable and unpredictable in recent years. It is obviously inevitable to lose its competitive edge that if an enterprise continues to provide standard commodities from traditional mass production process. The business community has finally realized that the era of mass customization is arrival. To transfer from traditional mass production process to mass customization, it should avoid only focus on the speed of transformation. To ensure success transformation, a company should set up a measurement mechanism to evaluate execution effectiveness since the alternation does not only reflect in the manufacturing process change, but all involving departments such as marketing, sales, financial, R&D and manufacturing. They all have to be re-engineered and streamlined their operational processes. The personal computer industry in Taiwan mainly focuses upon OEM business for the well-known global companies. The essential production strategy adopted is to obtain the competitive advantage by fast expanding capacity so that to lover the production cost. However, this strategy will not be effective as it was before because the market is fast slowing down. This essay outlines the main theory of mass customization and analyzes the successful factors of implementation it in a worldwide well-know computer peripheral company, Logitech Inc. The results of this research can be a very valuable reference to those companies who wishes to implement mass customization in the future. It well known that severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus also can spread when a person touches a surface or an object contaminated with infectious droplets and then touches his or her mouth, nose, or eye(s). In the present study, the acrylonitrile-cutadiene-styrene (ABS), having a very wide range of applications, such as telephone handsets computer and other office equipment housings, etc, was successfully coated silver as antibacterial materials. This antibacterial high tech product is still located in the introductory stage now. It is usually shorter in life cycle and lack the paragon for marketers to follow. Marketing researches for high tech product would be much more difficult than those of general products. The research framework investigates the relationships between the purchase decision of computer peripheral equipment coated by nano silver film as antibacterial and demographic characteristics, consumer knowledge and environment variables. A convenient sampling method was used to select respondents. 450 questionnaires were distributed. Of the 450 questionnaires, 410 responses were received and 69 responses were incomplete, respectively. The remaining 341 valid and complete questionnaires were used for the quantitative analysis. It represents a useable response rate of 83.2%. Descriptive, reliability, cross, ANOVA analyses were used to test the hypotheses. There are important conclusions drew by this study that follows: 1. There are significant differences between the computer peripheral equipment product antibacterial processing purchase wish and the year obtained, the family gross income and the education level. 2. The consumers’ computer peripheral equipment product antibacterial processing purchase wish purchase decision was significantly positive affected by the new technology receptivity, the personality special characteristic, the product knowledge and the environment variable (associates and society support), the risk manner, the promoted activity and other attributes (brand or manufacture). 3. Using the new technology receptivity, the social support and associates’ opinions as the variables of regression equation to forecast purchase wish express as: The purchase wish = .547× the new technology receptivity +.186×social supports +.109× the associates’ opinions.
