Abstract:
This program of research was aimed at investigating a novel application of computer aided text analysis (CATA). To date, CATA has been used in a wide variety of disciplines, including Psychology, but never in the area of personnel selection. Traditional personnel selection techniques have met with limited success in the prediction of costly training failures for some occupational groups such as pilot and air traffic controller. Accordingly, the overall purpose of this thesis was to assess the validity of linguistic style to select personnel. Several studies were used to examine the structure of language in a personnel selection setting; the relationship between linguistic style and the individual differences dimensions of ability, personality and vocational interests; the validity of linguistic style as a personnel selection tool and the differences in linguistic style across occupational groups. The participants for the studies contained in this thesis consisted of a group of 810 Royal Australian Air Force Pilot, Air Traffic Control and Air Defence Officer trainees. The results partially supported two of the eight hypotheses; the other six hypotheses were supported. The structure of the linguistic style measure was found to be different in this study compared with the structure found in previous research. Linguistic style was found to be unrelated to ability or vocational interests, although some overlap was found between linguistic style and the measure of personality. In terms of personnel selection validity, linguistic style was found to relate to the outcome of training for the occupations of Pilot, Air Traffic Control and Air Defence Officer. Linguistic style also demonstrated incremental validity beyond traditional ability and selection interview measures. The findings are discussed in light of the Five Factor Theory of Personality, and motivational theory and a modified spreading activation network model of semantic memory and knowledge. A general conclusion is drawn that the analysis of linguistic style is a promising new tool in the area of personnel selection.

White, Jamie Aaron. "Empowering medical personnel to challenge through simulation-based training." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7864/.

Full text
Abstract:
The rigid structure of medical hierarchies within UK hospitals can become the source of dissatisfaction and conflict for medical personnel, the repercussions of which can be disastrous for patients and staff. The research reported herein presents the results of an investigation into the use of Virtual Reality (VR) simulation and conventional story-boarded techniques to empower medical personnel to challenge decisions they feel are inappropriate. Prototype applications were crafted from a selection of transcribed ‘challenge events’ acquired from an opportunistic sample of clinical staff. Data obtained from an initial investigation were used to establish attitudes toward challenging and evaluate the findings of the literature to generate research questions and objectives. Medical personnel who engaged with both media as part of an experimental phase assessed their viability as potential training resources to help foster the ability to challenge. Analysis of this experiment suggested that both techniques are viable tools in the delivery of decision-making training and could potentially deliver impact into other applications within healthcare. To increase the realism of the training material, the technologies should be presented in a format appropriate for those with limited ‘gaming’ experience and allow a credible level of interaction with the environment and characters.

Martin, Brenda L. "Computer Anxiety Among Virginia Cooperative Extension Field Personnel." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30402.

Full text
Abstract:
Extension professionals must have easy access to and knowledge of emerging technologies to deliver programs more efficiently and effectively. With the increasing use of computer technology comes an increasing number of individuals who have computer anxiety. This study examined selected variables as predictors of computer anxiety. Data were collected from 402 Virginia Cooperative Extension field personnel. The personnel included Agricultural and Natural Resources agents, Family and Consumer Sciences agents, 4-H agents, technicians, and secretaries. A modified version of Oetting's 1983 Computer Anxiety Scale (COMPAS) was used to determine the computer anxiety levels. For this instrument, an internal consistency reliability of Cronbach's alpha r = .95 resulted from this study. The survey results were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The overall mean score for the respondents to this study was 101.68, on a 200 point scale, which was interpreted using the COMPAS manual to indicate that only 20% of the Virginia Cooperative Extension personnel were "anxious" or "very anxious." Regression analysis indicated that time per day using a computer, years with Extension, and age were the significant variables related to anxiety. Increased computer use reduced but did not entirely eliminate computer anxiety. A profile of a respondent who was relaxed about computer use included being age 20 to 29, a secretary, and using a computer more than two hours per day. A person anxious about computer use was middle aged (40 and over), a technician, and used the computer less than two hours per day. The results indicated that the more a respondent used the computer per day the less anxious they were. A large number of personnel used the computer to compile and produce educational material and to communicate with colleagues. The Virginia Cooperative Extension administration should direct their attention regarding computer training to respondents who are 40 years of age and older and are technicians. To reduce computer anxiety, personnel should be provided with in-service training emphasizing computer applications. Additional research could identify why technicians have higher levels of computer anxiety. Further study could identify other variables that may be related to computer anxiety.
Ph. D.

Holm, Anna. "Making or breaking personnel with documentation." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Institutionen för datavetenskap, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-108347.

Abstract:
In order to support a standardized and uniform documentation one can use different types of aids such as influencing attitudes, provide training and customize tools for documentation. This study looks at documentation in elderly care from the personnel’s perspective and seeks to better understand their view of and experience with documentation in relation to the aids described above. By holding semi-structured interviews with 12 people working with elderly care qualitative data were obtained and later analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). A range of different thoughts and attitudes towards documentation were found, some that could facilitate documentation, but also some that could hinder a good documentation practice. Also different insecurities were found such as lack of experience/knowledge about documentation, technology or language. Colleagues are a great resource for helping and educating personnel but it might be hard for them to explain some things they do if they aren’t aware of how they do it. It might also take time to readjust to new procedures such as a common information structure, especially for the experienced workers that have formed routines for how to do things. Contextual factors are important and the documentation systems have the ability to make or break the users.

Abstract:
This thesis introduces a multi-objective variation of the personnel assignment problem, by including additional hierarchical and team constraints, which put restrictions on possible matchings of the bipartite graph. Besides maximization of summation of weights that are assigned to the edges of the graph, these additional constraints are also treated as objectives which are subject to minimization. In this work, different genetic algorithm approaches to multi-objective optimization are considered to solve the problem. Weighted Sum &ndash
a classical approach, VEGA - a non-elitist multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, and SPEA &ndash
a popular elitist multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, are considered as means of solution to the problem, and their performances are compared with respect to a number of multi-objective optimization criteria.

Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The logical allocation of tasks in engineering offices currently relies heavily on the experience and intuition of project managers. In large scale projects the complexity of the task allocation procedure exceeds the capacity of human intuition, and a systematic technique is required to aid project managers in assigning tasks to individuals. In this project such a systematic technique is modelled and implemented using the Java programming language. An equation was developed to calculate an individual’s workload, and used in conjunction with other criteria to intelligently and systematically select an optimal individual to complete engineering tasks. The software solution is network-based, and also aims to aid project managers in various managerial duties.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die logiese toekenning van ingenieurstake steun tans swaar op die ervaring en aanvoeling van projek bestuurders. Wheeler, Creed R. "Implementation of the People Capability Maturity Model with Technical Support Personnel in Volusia County School District." NSUWorks, 2006. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/917.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem addressed was that many school districts do not have the operational funding to provide sufficient technology support. Whereas large companies strive to have at least one professional technology support person for every 50 computers, few school districts can afford to fund this ratio. Further, technology support is frequently ignored in the school district if it comes at the expense of hiring teachers to provide educational opportunities or reducing class sizes for students. The People Capability Maturity Model (P-CMM) is a tool for managing and developing an organization's workforce practices. A 6-month application of the P-CMM was applied to a Support Services Department in Volusia County School District in Florida. The goal was to explore the effectiveness of the application of the P-CMM in improving the use of best practices in a limited technology support personnel department. The results describe a single-case study of the application of the P-CMM model to a public school district technology support department. The IDEAL (Initiating, Diagnosing, Establishing, Acting, and Learning) process was used in applying the P-CMM. During the initiating phase, participation was gained and an overview of the P-CMM was provided. At the diagnosing phase, a questionnaire and a gap analysis found that the organization was assessed at Level 2 of the P-CMM. The area of Training and Development was identified as particularly weak in the organization, and during the establishing phase it was identified as the focus for the application. Competency Analysis was administered to determine what training was required. At the acting phase, an action plan was developed. During the learning phase, the questionnaire and the gap analysis were repeated to assess changes in workforce competencies. Although the organization did not reach Level 3 of the P-CMM, competencies were identified and improvements were made in Training and Development. This case study may be used as a model for replication in other school districts or organizations that need to improve the use of limited technology support in their organization.

Abstract:
The Virginia Board of Education is considering the adoption of technology standards for instructional personnel in Virginia's schools. All pre-service instructional personnel will have to demonstrate proficiency prior to obtaining a Virginia teaching certificate. Those currently in service may also have to demonstrate proficiency, as defined by the local school division. This study was designed to be a prototypic model for implementing the standards in Gloucester County Schools. Three hundred-ninety (390) instructional personnel were surveyed, according to selected strata, regarding their current level of competence. The discrepancy between the current level of proficiency and the level required by the standard defined the need for staff development. Differences among strata were provided for in planning for staff development activities.Staff Development activities were planned for all identified needs and implemented for a pilot group. The training sessions focused on raising the level of proficiency to that required to satisfy the standards. Participants in the pilot group were re-surveyed to verify the plan. An assessment procedure for measuring and reporting mastery on the standards was proposed by the pilot group. The process outlined in this study will be condensed into a brochure that will be provided to the Virginia Department of Education for possible distribution to other school divisions.
Ed. D.

Abstract:

Lloyd-James, Maureen. "Using Online Technologies to Deliver Management Courses to Cruise Ship Personnel at Sea." NSUWorks, 2008. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/218.

Full text
Abstract:
As the cruise industry continues to grow at a rapid pace, additional qualifications for its management personnel are becoming increasingly important. Many new ships are built each year, leaving a void in experienced personnel. Additionally, some leave the ships in order to improve professional qualifications on shore. Whereas many of the companies are training personnel onboard using on-the-job training, the concepts addressed in college-level management programs remain lacking. The goal was to implement and evaluate delivery of formal coursework to English-speaking, multicultural cruise ship personnel onboard by using emerging technologies that are available today. College-level management courses using Web 2.0 technologies were designed, delivered and evaluated. Two courses were offered each was split into two groups using different technologies. Group 1 used non-emerging technologies via a web page with additional material to support the textbook. This group also used discussion forums, online quizzes and tests and online grade book. Group 2 used the same features as the first and Web 2.0 technologies including Wikis, blogs, vodcasts, YouTube.com video clips, and synchronous Instant Messaging. Both groups had intense, positive distant interactions with faculty and had comparable outcomes. The least effective technology was the wiki and the most, the Discussion Forum. The finding was that the cruise industry may well have developed a distinct culture is an important one that may well lead to a better understanding of acculturation. Three weeks proved an ideal length of time for students to complete the 1.5-credit courses. Dividing 4.5-credit courses into 1.5-modules proved successful. Out of the original 249 applicants, 162 students participated from 36 different countries located on 64 different ships around the world.

Garip, Gulcan. "Modifying and evaluating the feasibility of a web-based weight loss intervention for Royal Navy personnel." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2013. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/360201/.

Full text
Abstract:
A range of resources exist to support overweight and obese personnel with their weight management efforts in the Royal Navy (RN). However, the high prevalence of personnel with excess weight in the RN suggests that these resources may be insufficient. Web-based weight loss interventions may be particularly well-suited for addressing the problem of overweight and obesity in the RN, as they may provide flexible and easily accessible support that can be accessed in users’ own time. This thesis presents an evaluation of the first web-based weight loss intervention for overweight and obese RN personnel. A systematic review and meta-synthesis of 17 studies was conducted to explore overweight and obese adults’ perceptions and experiences of behavioural weight management interventions. The review indicated several factors that overweight and obese people perceived as affecting their weight management efforts, which if addressed, could improve the credibility of weight management interventions. A survey study with 1030 RN personnel identified there was some interest in using a web-based weight loss intervention in the RN, particularly among obese personnel and female personnel. A qualitative study with 21 overweight and obese RN personnel identified participants’ perceived barriers and facilitators within the Naval environment that were related to their weight management efforts. These findings were used to inform modifications to an existing web-based weight loss intervention. A second qualitative study explored 14 overweight and obese personnel’s perceptions and experiences of using the modified web-based weight loss intervention. Further modifications to the intervention were undertaken in light of the results from this study. A final feasibility study aimed to evaluate the possibility of trialling and implementing the modified web-based weight loss intervention among 43 overweight and obese RN personnel according to the Reach, Efficacy, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework. It was estimated that the uptake of the intervention was 6% and it had a moderate effect on weight loss among users, despite not being implemented as intended. This thesis identified a number of suggestions for improving overweight and obese RN personnel’s engagement with web-based weight management interventions. These include the need for interventions to promote autonomous motivation among overweight and obese personnel to manage their weight, and interventions at the organisational level to change perceptions around weight management in the RN.

Full text
Abstract:
For visually impaired people, raised-line documents are important for access to knowledge. In order to respond to the specificities of haptic perception, it is necessary to simplify the amount of information available within a raised-line document. This process is called the adaptation of the content and relies on the intervention of a specialist who knows how to design content adapted to tactile exploration. As the modification is impossible, it must be printed again at each changes. Thus, the ability to use and explore digital rather than physical content is an interesting alternative. A large number of free access numerical data is available, and the adaptation of the data can be carried out by means of algorithms provided for this purpose. However, digital documents are essentially visual, and therefore inaccessible to visually impaired people as they are. The state of the art regarding haptic exploration of digital data reveals a set of solutions based on an devices (like a force feedback mouse). This approach has many limitations, including browsing the document with a single point of contact. A more functional approach is to let the user explore a digital graph with his hands: each finger can then be considered as a cursor. Feedback audio and vibration are triggered depending on the position of the finger on the digital document. However, it is necessary to know the important elements of a graph (the elements that will trigger feedback), as well as the role of each finger during the exploration. The problematic of this thesis deals with the exploration of digital spatial data by relying on haptic interactions. The goal is twofold: 1) understand how visually impaired people explore raised-line diagrams; and 2) offer haptic interaction techniques, based on personal and wearable devices, that allow visually impaired users to explore digital diagrams in different contexts (at home or at school, for example). To answer the first point, we conducted two studies on the exploration strategies of raised-line documents, according to the level of expertise of the users. We have shown that the strategies used depend on the expertise but also the type of document explored. To answer the second point, we proposed new interaction techniques based on the use of a smartwatch that allows localized feedback. We conducted two experimental studies regarding the design and evaluation of watch-based haptic interaction techniques. The first study focused on comparing the exploration of physical diagrams with that of virtual digital diagrams The results show that two of our interaction techniques allow for faster digital graphics exploration than the exploration of 3D graphics. Our second study aimed to develop and evaluate interaction techniques allowing the use of two hands while exploring digital content. The results show that bimanual strategies based on localized feedback improve digital diagrams exploration performance. The results of these studies highlight the benefits of bimanual haptic interaction. Combined with a device for tracking and tracking hands, interaction techniques developed on a connected watch could enable users to interact with digital content in many situations of everyday life

Abstract:
Computer professionals have been agents of change in many organizations. In some cases the role inadvertently became theirs as they were the ones at the vanguard of implementing the new information processing technology in organizations. While in other cases they were the catalysts for change, to force new methods/procedures onto lethargic organizations. While introducing change on others in the organization and adapting to new technological changes themselves, the computer professionals have not really had to face a significant change in their status, power, or importance to the organization. The introduction of the personal computer has brought about significant change in the way the job of the computer professional is perceived by many in the business world. While this change is personally affecting the way they do their job, there has not been a noticeable attempt by those managing computer professionals to deal with the human emotions engendered by such a change. Part of the reason for this lack of attention may be due to the lack of a model as to how computer professionals react to change. Such a model would provide a system whereby it would be possible to recognize where efforts could be made to measure, predict, and modify situations so that a smooth transition can be made to the change. Toward this end a model was developed which presents a system as to how computer professionals react to change. This dissertation presents the model, surveys a population of computer professionals, and analyzes the model using data gathered from the population. The data was gathered in the form of a self administered survey which was given to computer professionals working for six investor owned electric and gas utilities in the Northwestern United states. They answered questions on a scale of from one to five as to their emotions and perceptions about the introduction of personal computers into their organizations. These questions spanned the timeframe as the organizations migrated from the early beginnings of personal computer introduction, to a situation where the use of personal computers was widespread in the company. In the case of three of the companies the personal computer had not yet achieved widespread use at the time of the survey. The data gathered from the computer professionals was statistically analyzed to see if relationships exist between the model and the data. Additionally, interesting demographic data was analyzed to see if certain other factors affected the computer professional's perception as to the impact of the personal computer on their quality of worklife.

Abstract:

Gleeson, William Joseph. "Computer-based decision-making: The impact of personal computers and distributed databases on managers' performance." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185309.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was a field experiment to test the influence of two different computer conditions on decision-making in an organizational setting. The experiment was carried out in ten mid-sized corporations. The 117 subjects contained about equal numbers of managers and non-managers. The computer conditions tested were (1) a personal computer used with a distributed data base and (2) the traditional mainframe with a central data base supplying information by printouts. The experimental problem was identical in both conditions as was the data in the data base. An additional part of the experiment was to vary the amount of information provided. Half the Subjects in both test conditions had only half the information available to them that the other half of the Subjects had. The results indicated that personal computers were more efficient by enabling Subjects to reach decisions faster. PCs did not produce better outcomes overall. Managers performed best using the traditional printouts. Their performance declined in effectiveness (but not in efficiency) when using a PC. With non-managers the reverse applied. Non-managers performed best when using a PC if they were computer literate. In fact, computer literate non-managers with PCs performed better than managers in either test condition whether the managers were computer literate or not. The level of information available is important. More information leads to better decisions. The implications of the results for management are that (1) more training in the use of computers will produce better outcomes in decision-making; (2) PCs can improve productivity by achieving better effectiveness through better decision outcomes and do so more efficiently by taking less time. Non-managers using PCs can make managerial decisions as well as managers can if the non-managers have computer literacy training. This tends to support the view that managers can be de-skilled by the arrival of PCs in the workplace.

Cheng, Qiao. "Compressive sensing for microwave and millimeter-wave array imaging." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2018. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/31704.

Full text
Abstract:
Compressive Sensing (CS) is a recently proposed signal processing technique that has already found many applications in microwave and millimeter-wave imaging. CS theory guarantees that sparse or compressible signals can be recovered from far fewer measure- ments than those were traditionally thought necessary. This property coincides with the goal of personnel surveillance imaging whose priority is to reduce the scanning time as much as possible. Therefore, this thesis investigates the implementation of CS techniques in personnel surveillance imaging systems with different array configurations. The first key contribution is the comparative study of CS methods in a switched array imaging system. Specific attention has been paid to situations where the array element spacing does not satisfy the Nyquist criterion due to physical limitations. CS methods are divided into the Fourier transform based CS (FT-CS) method that relies on conventional FT and the direct CS (D-CS) method that directly utilizes classic CS formulations. The performance of the two CS methods is compared with the conventional FT method in terms of resolution, computational complexity, robustness to noise and under-sampling. Particularly, the resolving power of the two CS methods is studied under various cir- cumstances. Both numerical and experimental results demonstrate the superiority of CS methods. The FT-CS and D-CS methods are complementary techniques that can be used together for optimized efficiency and image reconstruction. The second contribution is a novel 3-D compressive phased array imaging algorithm based on a more general forward model that takes antenna factors into consideration. Imaging results in both range and cross-range dimensions show better performance than the conventional FT method. Furthermore, suggestions on how to design the sensing con- figurations for better CS reconstruction results are provided based on coherence analysis. This work further considers the near-field imaging with a near-field focusing technique integrated into the CS framework. Simulation results show better robustness against noise and interfering targets from the background. The third contribution presents the effects of array configurations on the performance of the D-CS method. Compressive MIMO array imaging is first derived and demonstrated with a cross-shaped MIMO array. The switched array, MIMO array and phased array are then investigated together under the compressive imaging framework. All three methods have similar resolution due to the same effective aperture. As an alternative scheme for the switched array, the MIMO array is able to achieve comparable performance with far fewer antenna elements. While all three array configurations are capable of imaging with sub-Nyquist element spacing, the phased array is more sensitive to this element spacing factor. Nevertheless, the phased array configuration achieves the best robustness against noise at the cost of higher computational complexity. The final contribution is the design of a novel low-cost beam-steering imaging system using a flat Luneburg lens. The idea is to use a switched array at the focal plane of the Luneburg lens to control the beam-steering. By sequentially exciting each element, the lens forms directive beams to scan the region of interest. The adoption of CS for image reconstruction enables high resolution and also data under-sampling. Numerical simulations based on mechanically scanned data are conducted to verify the proposed imaging system.

Abstract:
It has been recognized for some time that persons with severe physical disabilities could benefit greatly if they had a personal robot under their control. Such kind of robots has been available for several years, but the acceptence by disabled persons has been very slow. One of the reasons is a concern for safety. If a robot arm is strong enough to bring food to a person's mouth, then it could do severe personal injury to the eyes or teeth in the event of an electronic or mechanical failure. In this thesis, a new approach of investigating a personal robot will be presented. A three-dimensional computer simulation of a personal robot will be described. It is completely under the control of the user. This simulation system has many advantages over testing an actual model, since it enables almost any type of personal robot and any type of control strategy to be investigated. This system can be used by researchers to investigate control algorithms for a personal robot. It can also be used by disabled persons so that they can get familiar with the robot as well as the control strategy before they use or purchase the actual model. Currently, this simulation is used to investigate a control strategy called "Modified Extended Physiological Proprioception".

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Aeronautics and Astronautics, 2002.
Includes bibliographical references (leaf 58).
The overall objectives of the project were to conceive, design, implement and evaluate a portable personal health advisor. The system would integrate data from various sources and handheld computers on a real-time basis to provide "advice" (intelligent and knowledge) anytime and anywhere so that a consumer can take practical and immediate actions to maximize their vitality to enjoy life. The conception phase included the identification of technologies and approach to deliver personal and real-time advice at points of decision. Using this knowledge, I developed a prototype in the context of a person shopping in a pharmacy or market to ensure that foods, medicines or other products do not pose hazards relative to that person's known medical condition. In order to implement a real-life and thus estimate the usability and the user's perception of the system, we chose to focus on Type II diabetics in this first phase. A field test was run at a Research Laboratory of the major project sponsor, Procter & Gamble. The experiment confirmed the great appeal of decision-aiding system for people who have to manage strict or complex diet. It also underlined its design challenges, because even an ubiquitous device that provides "perfect advice" would promote a long-term behavior change only if human factor issues related to trust, privacy and user perception are carefully analyzed. It finally revealed the need for a trusted infrastructure, and some of the difficulties to overcome in order to implement the system in a large scale.
by Cédric Hutchings.
S.M.

Abstract:
For the majority of the computers existence, we humans have interacted with them in a similar way, usually with a strict one-to-one relationship between user and machine. This is reflected by the design of most computers, operating systems and user applications on the market today, which are typically intended to only be operated by a single user. When computers are used for teamwork and cooperation, this design philosophy can be restricting and problematic. This paper investigates the development of shared software intended for multiple users and the impact of the single user bias in this context. A prototype software system was developed in order to evaluate different development methods for shared applications and discover potential challenges and limitations with this kind of software. It was found that the development of applications for multiple users can be severely limited by the target operating system and hardware platform. The authors conclude that new platforms are required to develop shared software more efficiently. These platforms should be tailored to provide robust support for multiple concurrent users. This work was carried out together with SAAB Air Traffic Management in Växjö, Sweden and is a bachelor's thesis in computer engineering at Linnaeus University.
