Recent technical innovation in the field of Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) has increased the opportunity for including physical, brain-sensing devices as a part of our day-to-day lives. The potential for obtaining a time-correlated, direct, brain-based measure of a participant's mental activity is an alluring and important development for HCI researchers. In this work, we investigate the application of BCI hardware for answering HCI centred research questions, in turn, fusing the two disciplines to form an approach we name - Brain based Human-Computer Interaction (BHCI). Abstract:
In this thesis an investigation into the behaviour of light when passing through photonic crystals was carried out using numerical methods. Photonic crystals are expensive and difficult to fabricate so there is a requirement for computer simulations that can quickly and accurately model how the crystal structure will affect the behaviour of light. A finite difference method was written to model two-dimensional photonic crystals. The results from the finite difference method modelling agreed with known results for standard photonic crystal structures created by the plane wave expansion method.

Computers, smartphones, smart systems, and other technologies are woven into nearly every aspect of our daily lives. As computational technology advances, it is imperative that we educate young people and working adults to thrive in a computational world. In this context, the essential question for American education is: In a computational world, what is important to know and know how to do? This paper argues that computational thinking is both central to computer science and widely applicable throughout education and the workforce.
