Abstract:
New technologies are used by both public relations managers and technicians and seem to be related, for technicians, to production of more news releases, graphics and literature searches. As a group, eight of 10 used personal computers daily and one of five was involved daily with desktop publishing, but managers, according to this mail survey of public relations practitioners, use technologies in more “strategic” ways, such as in budgeting or market and demographic data research.

Abstract:
The faculty of the School of Humanities of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) were surveyed to assess their current use of and attitudes towards educational computing. The respondents were generally self-trained in computer use, indicated positive attitudes to, and made frequent use of computers. Frequency of computer use, level of general computing skills, computer interest, and anxiety were analyzed according to respondent rank, sex, and age. Faculty perceptions of obstacles to computer use in the humanities indicate a need to address issues of funding for hardware, quality of software, training, and technical support. The main faculty interests in applications software include word processing, desktop publishing, graphics, database management, communications, and computer-assisted instruction. While recognizing that humanities faculty do not have the same level of involvement in computing as faculty in more “technical” disciplines, UIUC humanists, as a group, are clearly not intimidated by computer technology.

Abstract:
Reports and documents from government and other organisations have existed for centuries, but in the post-war period their production increased significantly. Computers, databases, desktop publishing software and the internet have revolutionised the ways documents can be produced and disseminated, allowing individuals, groups and organisations access to a whole new world of information. The result has been an explosion in online publishing that has transformed scholarly communication. Research reports – or grey literature as they are also known – are now an essential part of many disciplines, including science and technology, health, environmental science and many areas of public policy. While access to these reports has become easier in many respects, online publishing presents many challenges as well, particularly for collecting organisations faced with the task of adapting their systems. The management of grey literature raises many issues that are still not resolved today. This article provides some background to these ongoing challenges in Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe.

Abstract:
Since the introduction of personal computers in the early 1980s, most documents and manuscripts have been prepared from within a word processing program on such a computer. Indeed, most documents on personal computers are created on a limited number of word processing packages that have come to dominate the market. Most of the data acquisition that attendees of Microscopy and Microanalysis currently perform is digital, i.e. directly into a personal computer or desktop workstation. It is frequently the case that images, spectra and diffraction patterns are only committed to paper when they are dispatched for publication. With the advent of the World Wide Web in 1994, and its subsequent explosive growth, entirely electronic publishing has become possible. It is possible to envisage the day when most publications will be available solely electronically and material will be only printed out occasionally by the reader. While there are a growing number of journals that are only available electronically, entirely paperless publication is not yet the norm and there are no definite plans, as yet, to publish the proceedings of the Microscopy and Microanalysis meetings solely in electronic format. However, there are a number of advantages to applying some of these emerging technologies in the production of the future proceedings. Electronic submission of abstracts is one advance that is being considered by the organizers of the meetings scheduled for the early 2000s. The National Science Foundation now receives almost all proposals electronically. There are several reasons for moving to electronic submission. The first is that proofing and correcting the abstracts would then be straightforward.

Abstract:
Acquisition of large dynamic range information is important for optimizing the performance of SEM’s, TEM’s, and other microscopies. The majority of digital imaging performed in desktop publishing and other consumer markets today is limited to 8-bit resolution, and these technologies are often modified for use in electron microscopy (EM). The limitations of these techniques are clearly evident in many EM situations despite the fact that human visual system is not equipped to differentiate more than 2^5 gray levels. The most common case is when a user seeks to view information hidden in both the image's dark levels and in the brightest levels. If multiple images at different detection levels are required despite digital processing then the image information is being limited by the digitization resolution.Digitization is the process of converting a signal from the analog form that originates from our microscope detectors to a digital form that is suitable for processing within computers.

Abstract:
Abstract With the current emphasis on simultaneous engineering, organizations are realizing the need to share paper based information in a timely manner to expedite the product development process. The Boeing Company embarked on an ambitious project allowing online access to over 7000 documents spread over 68,000 pages. The Product Standards Data System (PSDS) provides view only copies of all product, process, tooling and design standards through a DOS. UNIX or OS/2 based workstation or an Apple Macintosh. In addition to viewing, the document creation process was automated using a Standardized General Markup Language (SGML) compatible desktop publishing package. The system is based on a tiered architecture and uses a multi-vendor solution to address the required functionality.

Schreiber, William F. "Successful color printing for the nonexpert." In OSA Annual Meeting. Washington, D.C.: Optica Publishing Group, 1991. http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/oam.1991.tuv1.

Full text
Abstract:
For nonexperts to get consistently high quality results in color printing, computer power can be used to supplement the operator’s judgment, which is at present indispensable. In a method originally developed at MIT for gravure printing, input images are scanned, displayed on a TV monitor, and then edited in terms of their appearance rather than with respect to ink amounts or dot percentages. The edited appearance varibles are converted to ink amounts in a lookup table. The relationship between the original colors and the scanner output signals, as well as the relationship between the edited appearance variables and the corresponding ink amounts, must be accurately characterized. The fact that the scanner, display, and printer gamuts are usually quite different is a complication that must be addressed for good results. The gravure system used a display that predicted the output page apppearance very accurately. For desktop publishing, a less expensive method is used involving a library of reference images known to print correctly on the given printer. If the user image is adjusted to match the reference image overall, it will also print acceptably.
