Abstract:
A methodology and algorithm for determining the optimal volume of repairs with known cyclicity of repair production and between-repair runs of mainline diesel locomotives of the TE10 series and the UzTE16M series in various sectional designs is presented. The basic component of this methodology is the dynamic programming method in combination with the reliability characteristics of diesel locomotive components and probabilistic and statistical methods for their calculation. Planning of optimal volumes of repairs is carried out on the basis of a minimax criterion based on the value of the total operating costs for the maintenance of each repair unit of a diesel locomotive. It is recommended to continue this research with the aim of drawing up block diagrams and developing working programs for computer hardware and software systems and computers with their subsequent implementation in the practice of working the locomotive complex of the Uzbek Railway.

Abstract:
Allowing several imperfect repairs before a perfect repair can lead to a highly reliable and efficient system by reducing repair time and repair cost. Assuming exponential lifetime and exponential repair time, we determine the optimal probability $p$ of choosing a perfect repair over an imperfect repair after each failure. Based on either the limiting availability or the limiting average repair cost per unit time, we determine the optimal number of imperfect repairs before conducting a perfect repair.

Abstract:
Assuming exponential lifetime and repair time distributions, we study the limiting availability A∞ as well as the per unit time-limiting profit ω of a one-unit system having two identical, cold standby spare units using semi-Markov processes. The failed unit is repaired either by an in-house repairer within an exponential patience time T or by an external expert who works faster but charges more. When there are two repair facilities, we allow the regular repairer to begin repair or to continue repair beyond T if the expert is busy. Two models arise accordingly as the expert repairs one or all failed units during each visit. We show that (1) adding a second spare to a one-unit system already backed by a spare raises A∞ as well as ω; (2) thereafter, adding a second repair facility improves both criteria further. Finally, we determine whether the expert must repair one or all failed units to maximize these criteria and fulfill the maintenance management objectives better than previously studied models.

Abstract:
This paper proposes three age-dependent preventive maintenance models with imperfect repair and/or imperfect preventive maintenance (pm). In these models imperfect repair is treated in a way that after repair the lifetime of a unit will decrease to a fraction of its immediately previous one and its repair time will increase to a multiple of immediately previous one. In this paper, the expected maintenance cost rate and asymptotic average availability are derived with a consideration that the maintenance and repair times are not negligible. The optimum maintenance policies are then determined for the three imperfect maintenance models respectively. A class of related optimization problems is also discussed. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the results.

Abstract:
Background/Objectives: Because of poor or inadequate regulations, long-term repair arrangements do not often reflect the management needs of multi-family housing complexes. This study gives political improvement suggestions for multi-family housing complex long-term repair plans that included establishment, reviews, plan coordination, and maintenance reserve accumulation and execution. Methods: Long-term repair plan and reserve accounting documents for multi-family housing complexes from 1994 to 2021 were examined using frequency and percentage. The Multi-family Housing Management Act of South Korea includes an obligation to have long-term repair plans for the targeted multi-family housing complexes. Results: 1) The long-term repair plan execution funds needed in 2020 were calculated by the Korean Housing Managers’ Association’s computer program and found to be 3.64 times greater than in 1994. 2) The long-term repair reserve was used in part for elevators and CCTV and fire fighting equipment repairs; however, no legal repair periods were considered. 3) The long-term repair reserve rate was highest 20 to 30 years after construction, at which time residents find the required expenses difficult to afford. Conclusion/Implications: The case study highlighted several problems: (1) missed work types when the long-term repair plan was established; (2) insufficient repair reserve accumulation because of the Multi-family Housing Management Act regulation that states that repairs need only commence one year after construction and limits repairs to some work types to three to 20%; and (3) no unified area standard for long-term repair plans and K-APT reserves, which altered long-term plans to short-term plans and had three years of field application review and coordination.

Abstract:
Despite more than a decade-long process to transition aircraft maintenance practices from paper-to electronic-based systems, some organizations remain unable to complete this transition. Researchers have indicated that while organizations have invested resources in technology improvements, there remains a limited understanding of the factors that contribute to effectively managing technology-enabled change. The purpose of this case study was to identify and explore socio-technical (ST) factors that inhibit an effective transition from a paper-based system to an electronic-based system for aircraft maintenance. A conceptual model applying theories of change management, technology acceptance, systems thinking, and ST theory informed the research. Thirteen participants provided data via semistructured interviews, field observations, follow-up interviews, other documentation, and a questionnaire. Data were analyzed with open and axial coding techniques to identify themes, which were then crosschecked and triangulated with observation and follow-up interview data. Findings revealed communication issues, a fundamental misconception in training, and a false assumption that all personnel easily acquire computer literacy. Benefits gained from this study should assist maintenance, repair, and overall (MRO) organizations within the Department of Defense to improve current and future technology implementation as the research underscores real-life issues from a comparable organization. The implications for positive social change provide a greater understanding of technology-enabled change and contribute to the development of best practices for technology initiatives that address common ST issues in the MRO workplace.

Abstract:
It is the age of information technology. Around the world, millions of computers are being linked together in networks of all sizes, from small local area networks to giant enterprise wide area networks. This rapid growth means a lot of opportunity for people working or preparing to work, in the computer industry. In today’s world of LANs and WANs, almost all business depends on internetworking for data communication. From the world wide internet to private intranet, internetworking technology is present in virtually every aspect of a business technical operation. And in this age of information technology it is very important to discover network failure as soon as possible. in this project, we present a set of methods to detect network nodes failure and predict network nodes failure with failure reasons. We describe the design and implementation by using a resource-combined algorithm, Nai've Bayes Classifier and Bayes Network. Results show that with the resource-combined algorithm the performance of actual nodes failure detection can be improved. Results also show that network nodes failure can be predicted in a fixed time before actual failure with a high degree of accuracy.

Abstract:
This thesis is a resource document for computer information that is not presently available as a single unit. It describes most of the commonly available computer peripherals and some not-so-common ones from the micro, mini, and mainframe computer worlds. Physical descriptions, methods of operation, trouble shooting, maintenance, and some schematics and future trends are covered. A few older devices having historical significance are also discussed.By knowing where the computer industry is currently and seeing where it has been hardware-wise, it should be possible to project the direction in which the computer industry is headed. People in the computer profession and people that use computers need to be educated about peripheral devices so that they may make informed decisions on which equipment to acquire and in planning for the future. This thesis should be a valuable aid in this process. The information presented should save time and money during the decision-making process and lead to more effective choices of equipment.

Eastwood, Grant. "Using computer vision to categorize tyres and estimate the number of visible tyres in tyre stockpile images." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/16022.

Full text
Abstract:
Pressures from environmental agencies contribute to the challenges associated with the disposal of waste tyres, particularly in South Africa. Recycling of waste tyres in South Africa is in its infancy resulting in the historically undocumented and uncontrolled existence of waste tyre stockpiles across the country. The remote and distant locations of such stockpiles typically complicate the logistics associated with the collection, transport and storage of waste tyres prior to entering the recycling process. In order to optimize the logistics associated with the collection of waste tyres from stockpiles, useful information about such stockpiles would include estimates of the types of tyres as well as the quantity of specific tyre types found in particular stockpiles. This research proposes the use of computer vision for categorizing individual tyres and estimating the number of visible tyres in tyre stockpile images to support the logistics in tyre recycling efforts. The study begins with a broad review of image processing and computer vision algorithms for categorization and counting objects in images. The bag of visual words (BoVW) model for categorization is tested on two small data sets of tread tyre images using a random sub-sampling holdout method. The categorization results are evaluated using performance metrics for multiclass classifiers, namely the average accuracy, precision, and recall. The results indicated that corner-based local feature detectors combined with speeded up robust features (SURF) descriptors in a BoVW model provide moderately accurate categorization of tyres based on tread images. Two feature extraction methods for extracting features for use in training neural networks (NNs) for tyre count estimations in tyre stockpiles are proposed. The two feature extraction methods are used to describe images in terms of feature vectors that can be used as input for NNs. The first feature extraction method uses the BoVW model with histograms of oriented gradients (HOG) features collected from overlapping sub-images to create a visual vocabulary and describe the images in terms of their visual word occurrence histogram. The second feature extraction method uses the image gradient magnitude, gradient orientation, and edge orientations of edges detected using the Canny edge detector. A concatenated histogram is constructed from individual histograms of gradient orientations and gradient magnitude. The histograms are then used to train NNs using backpropogation to approximate functions from the feature vectors describing the images to scalar count estimations. The accuracy of visible object count predictions are evaluated using NN evaluation techniques to determine the accuracy of predictions and the generalization ability of the fit model. The count estimation experiments using the two feature extraction methods for input to NNs showed that fairly accurate count estimations can be obtained and that the fit model could generalize fairly well to unseen images.

Phung, Quoc V. "Survivability through pre-configured protection in optical mesh networks." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2005. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/665.

Full text
Abstract:
Network survivability is a very important issue, especially in optical networks that carry huge amount of traffic. Network failures which may be caused by human errors, malfunctional systems and natural disaster (eg. Earthquakes and lightening storms), have occurred quite frequently and sometimes with unpredictable consequences. Survivability is defined as the ability of the network to maintain the continuity of service against failures of network components. Pre-configuration and dynamic restoration are two schemes for network survivability. For each scheme, survivability algorithms can be applied at either Optical Channel sublayer (Och) known as link-based. Or, Optical Multiplex Section sublayer (OMS) known as path-based. The efficiency of survivability algorithms can be assessed through such criteria as capacity efficiency, restoration time and quality service. Dynamic restoration is more efficient than pre-configuration in terms of capacity resource utilization, but restoration time is longer and 100% service recovery cannot be guaranteed because sufficient spare capacity may not be available at the time of failures. Similarly, path-based survivability offers a high performance scheme for utilizing capacity resource, but restoration time is longer than link based survivability.

Weppenaar, De Ville. "Intelligent maintenance management in a reconfigurable manufacturing environment using multi-agent systems." Thesis, Bloemfontein : Central University of Technology, Free State, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/11462/136.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M. Tech.) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2010
Traditional corrective maintenance is both costly and ineffective. In some situations it is more cost effective to replace a device than to maintain it; however it is far more likely that the cost of the device far outweighs the cost of performing routine maintenance. These device related costs coupled with the profit loss due to reduced production levels, makes this reactive maintenance approach unacceptably inefficient in many situations. Blind predictive maintenance without considering the actual physical state of the hardware is an improvement, but is still far from ideal. Simply maintaining devices on a schedule without taking into account the operational hours and workload can be a costly mistake. The inefficiencies associated with these approaches have contributed to the development of proactive maintenance strategies. These approaches take the device health state into account. For this reason, proactive maintenance strategies are inherently more efficient compared to the aforementioned traditional approaches. Predicting the health degradation of devices allows for easier anticipation of the required maintenance resources and costs. Maintenance can also be scheduled to accommodate production needs. This work represents the design and simulation of an intelligent maintenance management system that incorporates device health prognosis with maintenance schedule generation. The simulation scenario provided prognostic data to be used to schedule devices for maintenance. A production rule engine was provided with a feasible starting schedule. This schedule was then improved and the process was determined by adhering to a set of criteria. Benchmarks were conducted to show the benefit of optimising the starting schedule and the results were presented as proof. Improving on existing maintenance approaches will result in several benefits for an organisation. Eliminating the need to address unexpected failures or perform maintenance prematurely will ensure that the relevant resources are available when they are required. This will in turn reduce the expenditure related to wasted maintenance resources without compromising the health of devices or systems in the organisation.

Abstract:
Abstract Products often experience different failure and repair needs during their lifespan. Prediction of the type of failure is crucial to the maintenance team for various reasons, such as realizing the device performance, creating standard strategies for repair, and analyzing the trade-off between cost and profit of repair. This study aims to apply machine learning tools to forecast failure types of medical devices and help the maintenance team properly decides on repair strategies based on a limited dataset. Two types of medical devices are used as the case study. The main challenge resides in using the limited attributes of the dataset to forecast product failure type. First, a multilayer perceptron (MLP) algorithm is used as a regression model to forecast three attributes, including the time of next failure, repair time, and repair time z-scores. Then, eight classification models, including Naïve Bayes with Bernoulli (NB-Bernoulli), Gaussian (NB-Gaussian), Multinomial (NB-Multinomial) model, Support Vector Machine with linear (SVM-Linear), polynomial (SVM-Poly), sigmoid (SVM-Sigmoid), and radical basis (SVM-RBF) function, and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) are used to forecast the failure type. Finally, Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is used to identify maintenance conditions for each product. The results reveal that the classification models could forecast failure type with similar performance, although the attributes of the dataset were limited.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to provide some useful insights on how cost driving events are related to the characteristics of failure distributions and the product lifetime (design life) in case of repairable systems. Repairable systems are those that can be restored to their fully operational capabilities by any method, other than the replacement of the entire system. In case of repairable systems, the components can be repaired or adjusted rather than replaced, whenever a breakdown occurs and thus such systems experience multiple failures over their life span. For majority of repairable systems, the life time maintenance and repair costs dominate the life cycle cost. To predict the maintenance and repair cost, failure data, maintenance data and repair time data is needed which is not readily available at the system design stage. When a repairable system is put into service, how many times it will fail over its life span depends on its reliability. Similarly, how fast the system is restored to its working condition when it fails (maintainability), also affect the costs incurred. Thus, the expected number of failures, time lost in restoring the system after each failure and cost per failure are important from life time maintenance cost prediction viewpoint. The expected number of failures depends upon the time to failure distribution of the system components and the after repair state of the system. In this paper, a modeling methodology is suggested for prediction of life time maintenance and repair cost of repairable systems based on expected number of failures. The repairable system lifetime is modeled using a two parameter Weibull distribution. The expected number of failures are estimated for renewal process (as-good-as-new after repair state) and minimal repair process (as-bad-as-old after repair state). The expected maintenance and repair costs are also evaluated for six different failure distributions. The technique has been illustrated through a specific application, namely an industrial pump and the results are presented.

Abstract:
Abstract The adoption of additive manufacturing methods is becoming prevalent in industry. Socio-economic trends seek more customization and sustainability in production. An increase in unique service components will warrant the need for more flexible repair methods. This is particularly important for components that are difficult to access or disassemble — thus requiring an on-site repair. This paper introduces the use of 3D printing pens as a means to perform repair to additively manufacturing components. A study was conducted to assess the feasibility of using a 3D printing pen in maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) applications on polymer-based service products. A series of tensile tests were conducted on printed specimens, pre- and post-repair, to examine the tensile retention of the mended region. Results indicate significant retention in tensile strength in the mended specimens, supporting the notion of the pens relevance in repair and overhaul applications. Specimens that fractured within the repair region were seen to have retained (81 ± 10) % of their original tensile strength while specimens that fractured outside the region retained (86 ± 4) %. Considering the limited control of the study, results acquired encourage further analysis of the underlying mechanisms in the process, with the intent to more efficiently exploit this approach for practical structure-based repair applications.

Abstract:
Environmental and sustainable issues have brought more and more attention to industries in product design and manufacturing. It is important for a product to meet its lifecycle requirements in repairing, replacing and recycling. Disassembly is required in product maintenance and recycling. An efficient disassembly plan can reduce the cost of product maintenance and minimize the product repair time. This paper introduces an efficient method for selective disassembly planning for the need of product maintenance and recycling to reduce the product operation time and cost. The method is based on an efficient product representation and effective sequence searching. It considers the product structure, removing direction of components, operation constraints and complex in the product representation and sequencing planning. An example is used to verify the proposed method. Challenges and further work are also discussed.

Abstract:
Maintenance costs are often significant for complex machinery, and organizations that are able to accurately assess maintenance costs for complex machinery can design or re-design the machinery to reduce maintenance expenses. This paper provides a review of relevant reliability theory to provide a background for model construction. The maintenance cost model is then developed from a probabilistic perspective, with a hierarchical breakdown of the complex machinery, and with consideration of the time value of money. A framework for the cost model is offered in which the cost of repair and preventative maintenance is considered along with the downtime costs for repair or preventative maintenance. As a proof of concept, maintenance costs for Ship Service Gas Turbine Generators (SSGTG) are developed from the Navy’s OARS (Open Architecture Retrieval System) data. Problems with data quality and heuristic adjustment of the data are discussed, recognizing that work is ongoing to improve the quality of the Navy’s maintenance data. Cognition Corporation’s Cost Advantage software is used for the modeling effort, providing an ability to focus on maintenance cost at any level of detail and to obtain cost roll up, as needed. Conclusions are drawn with respect to the modeling of maintenance costs for complex machinery.

Abstract:
Static structural engine components are typically designed for full lifetime operation. Efforts to reduce weight in order to improve performance result in structural designs associated with higher lifing uncertainty: Maintaining reliability levels may necessitate expensive manufacturing and maintenance solutions. In practice, repair techniques for such structures are available; however, they are not planned for during the design process. The objective of the research presented in this paper is to model and optimize component lifecycle costs with respect to lifing decisions, demonstrated by means of an aeroengine component design example. Both technical (failure) and legislative (certification) implications are considered. The impact of maintenance strategies (repair and/or replace) on lifing design decisions is quantified. It is shown that, under different conditions, it may not be prudent to design for full life but rather accept shorter life and then repair or replace the component. This is especially evident if volumetric effects on low cycle fatigue life are taken into account. It is possible that failure rates based on legacy engines do not translate necessarily to weight-optimized components. Such an analysis can play a significant supporting role in engine component design in a product-service system context.

Abstract:
The problem addressed in this paper is disassembly sequence planning for the purposes of maintenance or component upgrading, which is an integral part of the remanufacturing process. This involves disassembly, component repair or replacement, and reassembly. Each of these steps incurs cost as well as the probability of damage during the process. This paper presents a method for addressing these tradeoffs, as well as the uncertainty associated with them. A procedure for identifying the best sequence of disassembly operations for maintenance and/or component upgrade is presented. It considers both disassembly and reassembly costs and uncertainties. Graph-based integer linear programming combined with multiattribute utility analysis is employed to identify the best set of tradeoffs among (a) disassembly time (and resulting cost) under uncertainty, (b) the probability of not incurring damage during disassembly, (c) reassembly time (and resulting cost) and (d) the probability of not incurring damage during reassembly. An example of a solar heating system is used to illustrate the method.
