Bernard Comrie, in his contribution on the Slavic languages to the volume edit ed by J. Gvozdanović (p. 766), reports a fact of particular historical interest. In pre senting the forms and behavior of the 'teens amongst the numerals' Comrie states that two accentual patterns apply, an oxytone and a recessive, i.e. -nájst and ÚNIT najst. However, he points out that exceptionally in the case of '1l' only enájst the oxy tone occurs.

Abstract:
This paper examines the strategies for relativisation and the Noun Phrase accessibility hierarchy and constraints in Yoruba [Keenan and Comrie 197T]. The various positions relativisable are examined. It was found that contrary to what Keenan and Comrie thought, Yoruba relativises all positions except the Object of Comparative. Attention is also focussed on the status of the coreferential pronoun found in subject relativisation. From the presence of this pronoun it appears as if Yoruba violates the continuous segment principle. However, our analysis shows that the pronoun is a surface structure phenomenon which obscures the underlying strategy for relativisation. The Yoruba data therefore supports the Hierarchy Constraints.

Abstract:
Abstract Linguistic typologists (e.g. Ramat 1987, Seiler 1995) tend to assume that there is a close connection between translatability and language universals (research) but this assumption has recently been called into question by Comrie (1986, 1989, 1998), who claims that such a connection should be ignored in the practical enterprise of doing linguistics or will have a debilitating effect on the progress of linguistics as a discipline. This paper will demonstrate that translation is not only possible in principle but also has much relevance to language universals (research). First, to argue that translation is, in principle, not possible is to deny the basic relation between cognitive-conceptual content and language, mediated by translation. Moreover, the question of translatability is no longer looked upon as something either possible or impossible but translation is recognized as a process in which optimal solutions to translation are sought. Comrie’s argument for the impossibility of translation is based on formal equivalence, a concept which is highly debatable, particularly within Translation Studies. Second, translation has much relevance to language universals (research), because universal constraints (for example, on relative clause formation) are formulated or defined in terms of grammatical context, which will only come to light through translation. This does not come as a surprise because the mediation between language and cognition is also done through translation. The role of translation in language universals (research) is, pace Comrie (1986, 1989, 1998), much more than a mere heuristic. Translation is crucial to language universals (research), as recognized by Ramat (1987) and Seiler (1995).

The system is compared to its closest common typological congeners, obviation and switch-reference. Although it bears more resemblances to obviation, the system is neither clearly one of switch-reference, nor, indeed, of obviation.

This study uses the theory of language typology by Comrie (1988). This research on grammatical alliance of Angkola language (AL) aims to understand (1) the basic construction of clause, (2) the construction of complex sentence, (3) the pivot system, and (4) the grammatical alliance system. The method used is participant-observation. Pivot test revelas that Angkola language syntactically treats S equals to A, and gives different treatment to P (S` = `A` ≠ P). Angkola language grammatically has an S/A pivot. It can be concluded that AL has a tendency as an accusative language.

Kazan Tatar is a Kipchak language spoken in the Republic of Tatarstan (Ethnologue). Previous literature has described a backness harmony system, with weak rounding harmony in the mid vowels (Comrie 1997, Berta 1998, Poppe 1968). This work utilizes novel data to investigate Tatar’s harmony under an Optimality Theory (OT) (Prince & Smolensky 1993) framework, contributing new observations regarding the lack of rounding harmony in Tatar, contrary to previous accounts. Through investigation of Tatar’s harmony system, we gain insight into the workings of the language’s phonology and find crucial evidence for the gradual decay of rounding harmony in Turkic languages.

Abstract The Relative Pronoun strategy is commonly used for relativization in European languages such as English – for example: The woman [ who won the lottery ] is my neighbour. In this strategy the head nominal (here the woman) is indicated inside the relative clause by a clause-initial pronominal element (the relative pronoun, here who). The Relative Pronoun strategy has been characterized as an exclusively European areal feature (e.g. Comrie 1998). This article describes this strategy in more detail, as well as previous accounts of its distribution, and goes on to demonstrate that the same strategy is also found in Nama, a Papuan language of southern New Guinea.

A more or less clear correlation pattern between the type of anaphoric NPs and the grammatical roles of their antecedents arises in Finnish intuition data (Section 2), and this pattern is corroborated by the data from prose text counts (Section 3). Even though a one-to-one mapping between the two hierarchies remains an idealization, it is clear that grammatical relations do bear on the type of anaphoric expression employed.

Abstract:
Abstract Most Romance languages share a grammaticalized construction to refer to events in the recent past, e.g. the passé récent in French and the pasado reciente in Spanish. In English, typically a present perfect alongside the adverb just is used to convey this meaning, commonly referred to as perfect of recent past (Comrie 1985) or hot news perfect (McCawley 1971). We show the French passé récent leads to a reading of immediate anteriority, which blocks readings that are available for the passé composé (Bres & Labeau 2015). In a parallel corpus study, we find that the Spanish and French recent past forms have a similar distribution, and the Germanic languages generally use perfect + just in translation. We then provide a DRT analysis to derive immediate anteriority compositionally.

Abstract:

Abstract:
It results from the analysis of our data that IL's are actually systematic even if they present a certain variability, due to the fact that they are systems under continuous evolution. Our learners' ILs are characterized by their own rules, rules which do not derive from the interference of the first language but rather from some general and abstract principles which can account for language learning in the most different situations. In particular from our data it results that, at least in earlier stages, semantic features play a more preponderant role than syntactic functions. Moreover IL's seem to be submitted to universal constraints similar to those proposed for natural languages (i.e. language universals such as the "Accessibility Hierarchy" by Keenan and Comrie).

Abstract:
This paper aims to investigate relativization pertaining to the syntax of nominal modification in Ho. Language shows different strategies of relativization such as participial relative clause and relative pronoun (or adverb) clause. In addition, there are three possibilities of the head position; i) postnominal relative clause, ii) prenominal relative clause, and iii) internally headed relative clause. Moreover, Keenan and Comrie (1977) proposed the noun phrase accessibility hierarchy which they claim as a universal that languages vary with respect to which NP positions can be relativized and the variation is not random but is dependent on the other positions. Therefore, in this paper, we would like to present or explore relativization of noun phrase in Ho within the study of various aspects of relativization.

Abstract:
This work provides an analysis of inchoative, morphological and analytical causatives in Pima Bajo, an Uto-Aztecan language spoken in Northwest Mexico. It is argued that for the analysis of these constructions it is useful not only to pay attention to the structural morphosyntactic properties, but also to functional values like, spontaneous, direct or indirect causation. All these functional values expressed in the scale: analytical-morphological-lexical causatives, proposed by Comrie (198:333). Constructions obtained from verbs selecting object complements, show that they could also be explained by considering the same kind of functional values. The scale previously mentioned, it is also useful to explained the fact that Pima Bajo doesn´t allow double object causatives. The scale makes unnecessary the Principle of Argument Density proposed by Song (1996).

Abstract:
Various facets of the general topic of multilingualism have been dealt with in previous ARAL volumes and as a major substantive focus in Volumes 6 and 14. Nonetheless, it does not seem at all surprising that we return to the topic in Volume 17 given the worldwide incidence of the phenomenon and the attention, and often controversy, which it arouses. Despite pressures and influences toward commonality from a seemingly pervasive mass media, the residents of the world continue to speak an amazing array of mutually unintelligible languages (see, for example, Bright 1992, Cheshire 1991, Comrie 1987, Edwards 1995). These languages vary in typological characteristics, geographical spread, and number of speakers. If written, they also vary in terms of the type of system that is used to record them (e.g., alphabetic, logographic, syllabic-alphabetic).

Abstract:
Through an investigation of morphologically defective pronominal object paradigms in a number of northern Italian dialects, this article offers a reflection on the relation between the development and the loss of linguistic items based on the reconstruction of the possible diachronic path that has led to the current situation. The paper sets out to achieve two objectives. First, it presents a detailed description of the peculiarities of the object clitic paradigm in the northern Italian dialects and places them within the wider Romance context. Secondly, it discusses and evaluates the way the processes of emergence and loss of linguistic items relate to one another, with specific reference to what appears to be a more general hierarchy operative in languages, the Referential Hierarchy (Silverstein 1976, Comrie 1981, and many others).
