Concentrated solar thermal systems are being increasingly deployed for industrial process heating and large-scale electricity production. A major constituent of a concentrating solar plant is the field of heliostat mirrors, which reflect the sunlight onto a receiver. Heliostats are subjected to fluctuating wind loads arising from atmospheric wind. These forces are important for design of heliostats, which must survive maximum wind loads under extreme conditions. Furthermore, dynamic wind loads which lead to vibrations of the mirror panel can affect the tracking accuracy of a heliostat field. T

Abstract:
This thesis studies receiver/reactor geometry for the ammonia thermochemical storage system and dish concentrators, using the case study of a masked 9 m2 dish. Experimental results proved that altering the geometric arrangement – in this case the cone angle – of reactor tubes within a cavity receiver significantly affects the heat transfers within and heat losses from the receiver. By consequence both the receiver efficiency and the solar-to-chemical efficiency of the dish-receiver system can be significantly increased. This is note-worthy as improvement

Abstract:
Impediments to investment in renewable energy resources arise in five areas, namely, infrastructure access, technological and resource uncertainty, competition from established fossil fuel alternatives, asset financing and public policy. Together these can lead to large capital cost penalties and poor resource productivity that reduce the viability of projects. Presented here are system-wide analyses of two novel pathways to generate new investment in concentrated solar thermal and in geothermal energy resources. The pathways are designed to reduce the minimum capital outlay required for the d

Recently, the supercritical carbon dioxide (s-CO2) Brayton cycle has been identified as a promising candidate for solar-thermal energy conversion due to its potentially high thermal efficiency (50%, for turbine inlet temperatures of ~ 1000 K). Realization of such a system requires development of solar receivers which can raise the temperature of s-CO2 by over 200 K, to a receiver outlet temperature of 1000 K. Volumetric receivers are an attractive alternative to tubular receivers due to their geometry, functionality and reduced thermal losses. A concept of a ceramic pressurized volumetric rece
