Full textThis work develops a detailed analysis focusing on certain aspects of the impact that the change in the structural bank concentration has brought to the bank-enterprise relation in our country. The interest in this subject, frequently discussed within the economics literature, can be explained by two reasons. The first reason is the involvement in the current events and the extraordinary impact that the M&A operations between banks have had on the structure of the Italian financial system. The second reason is the current attempt to estimate how the enterprises face the economic and financial dealers internal reorganization change. The main purpose of the analysis focus on a survey based on a sample of 2,500 small and medium domestic companies that have been questioned to describe how they "live" the relation with the traditional banks and the new forms of finance businesses organized like investment banks. The responses have led to remarkable observations and ideas in regards to the different contest of the bank offer system, because it has been possible to verify not only the reorganization impact, but also the existence of a climate of uncertainty within the traditional bank system. Moreover, questioning the companies about how they face the change and the relation with the banks, has allowed considering how much they feel understood and whether they are suitably valued. Thus, the companies have been allowed to openly express their point of view in order to identify improvement advices to overcome the lack of relations.

Full textThe dissertation contributes to the understanding of the issue of alcohol use and abuse among young people in nightlife settings (e.g., bars, clubs, and private parties). It describes the effectiveness of participatory research approaches in studying and addressing the phenomenon in areas with a high concentration of drinking venues (nightlife entertainment districts). The Grounded Theory research (study 1) on young adults' drinking patterns in nightlife settings showed changes in the meanings, processes, and representations of alcohol across settings and their effect on drinking patterns. The results of the context analysis of the city of Milan (Italy) (study 2) indicated specific alcohol related issues in the local context, in particular the wide range of alcohol-related risks and consequences for both youngsters and residents in the four nightlife entertainment districts of the city. The last study is a multiphase mixed methods participatory research conducted in a nightlife district. Multiple methods (interviews, a community survey, ethnography) integration was part of the participatory process in which community members collaborated during different phases of research. The study resulted in indications for intervention to reduce alcohol-related negative consequences for youths and nightlife districts’ residents, and in theoretical and methodological considerations for the future research.

Full textWhat does effectively determine systemic stability? Does international anarchy always determine a threat to survival? The structural model introduced in this work focuses on two main variables, power concentration and geography, to demonstrate how structural constraints shape States’ base motivations to action, and how the resulting behaviors condition the observable systemic outcomes. Furthermore, I introduce the socialization process as an intervening variable, enabled by specific structural conditions. Socialization could inhibit the systemic balancing tendency by narrowing States’ foreign policy options. From the theoretical point of view, the model modifies the realist assumption towards constant structural incentives to action. By focusing on the role played by power concentration and geography in shaping States’ motivations, it is possible to link together the shifts in international power distribution with shifts in structural incentives. Nonetheless, the model loses the rather mechanistic character of structural realism, making balancing one among many viable options. From the empirical point of view, I apply the model against three case studies, trying to demonstrate how the existence of concentrated or diffused power structures determines systemic stability or instability.

Full textThe aim of the project is a feasibility study, from a territorial perspective, of the biomass renewable energy production chain. The innovative solution is to link, for the first time, biomass renewable energy and river transports. Biomass material produced within a chosen catchment area (e.g. the Po River Basin in Italy), will be transported via inland waterways to the biomass renewable energy plants. The use of river transport decreases CO2 production, reduces costs enlarging the area of biomass availability, and creates an economical growth of the biomass market within a river basin. During the phase of energy and heat production, the resulting CO2 could be sequestrated and stored underground, reducing the total CO2 content of the atmosphere. This means that the entire process not only produces renewable and clean energy but could be also considered a "negative CO2 production". CO2 sequestrated could be injected, at groundwater level, in those coastal areas exposed to subsidence so that the ground lowering phenomena could be fought. During the PhD a procedure for the data collection in a river basin and for the environmental and economical sustainability of the project has been developed and tested.

Full textThere is a strong evidence that crime is tightly concentrated in a small number of micro places in urban areas. Indeed, studies conducted in different U.S. cities show how 50% of crime events are concentrated in about 3% to 6% of street segments. Moving from these findings, Weisburd, Groff and Yang raise the issue as to whether there is a law of crime concentrations, applicable across different cities and stable over time. Indeed, despite the general decrease of crime trends in Seattle, the authors find that almost an equal number of street segments in the city produce the same proportion of crime in the 16-year period under study. These results were confirmed in Tel Aviv-Jaffa (Israel), suggesting the presence of a sort of “normal level of crime” among cities at micro level. This study aims at testing the presence of crime concentrations outside the U.S., in a different context, where this hypothesis has not yet been tested and quantitative studies at street segment level have not yet been developed. In particular, a street segment analysis was conducted in Milan (Italy) and the presence of crime concentrations was confirmed. In addition, in order to understand the main determinants of crime concentrations in Milan, a set of negative binomial regressions models were run. Findings show how social disorganisation factors seem to have stronger influence on crime at street segment level, compared to opportunity factors.

Full textSelected microrganisms are important as agents of the main processes of transformation of the raw materials in fermented product but also as responsible of the improvement in the shelf-life, texture, taste, aroma, as well as safety and nutritional value. The market globalization made us to consider not only popular food and/or beverage in Europe but also in non European countries. In this research I consider wine and cassava products. As regards wine the aim is to improve the Ortrugo wine typicalness by Saccaromyces cerevisiae autochtonous strains. In spontaneous fermentations the yeasts vary according to geography location, climatic conditions and/or grape variety. Some researchers believe that each micro-environment is characterised by specific Saccaromyces cerevisiae that may enhance the grape flavours. Unfortunately spontaneous fermentations may cause off-flavours and fermentation stuck. The selected yeast inoculum in must is one of the consolidated practices to eliminate the risks of spontaneous fermentation, but these yeast are not able to emphasise the characters of grape variety because they are from different ecosystems. Autochthonous yeasts e.g. yeasts isolated from a definite micro-environment are adapted to operate in a must whose characteristics are determined by the variety of the grapes and the “terroir” and, therefore, they able to enhance the peculiarities of a wine. As regards the cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) selected microorganisms will be used to reduce the cyanogenic glucosides (mainly linamarin and lotaustralin) toxic molecules. Consumption of cassava and its products may cause cyanide poisoning with symptoms of vomiting, nausea, dizziness, stomach pains, weakness, headache and diarrhoea and occasionally death. Cyanide intake from cassava is almost certainly the cause of Konzo (irreversible paralysis of the legs) in eastern, central and southern Africa. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has set the safe level of cyanogens in cassava flour at 10 ppm (FAO/WHO, 1991).
