LLORENTE, ANDRÉS. "New concept for the ground connection in Scania’s trucks and buses." Thesis, KTH, Elektroteknisk teori och konstruktion, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-154542.

Full text
Abstract:
Regarding the ground electrical connection in trucks and buses, the requirements of earthing in heavy-duty vehicles were gathered and evaluated. The most important problems in the state-of-the-art grounding devices are corrosion, electrical resistance and uncertainty in the mounting process, altogether with depreciation over time. The goal is to come up with new concepts that can give a more reliable and better ground connection into the frame with faster, easier and safer manufacturing operations. Several methods for attaching different ground connectors to the steel frame are going to be investigated, including bolted connections, press devices, soldering, brazing and local plating spots. It will be shown that the welding operation gives the best electrical results, while lowering mounting costs, time and variability. Two welded connectors are then going to be proposed as the best alternatives and a parallel investigation with both of them is going to be carried out. These new concepts, filed for patent protection, are going to be labelled as “SRM Welded ground stud” and “SRM Welded grounding nut”. The first of them consists of a plated steel threaded stud (M8 or M10) with a ring shaped contact surface built in one of the ends, where the Ø12 mm weld is to be performed onto the uncoated frame. The second concept comprises a stainless steel M10 round nut welded over a punched hole. The optimization will also cover different alternatives for plating metals, contact aid compounds and masking caps for both devices. The risk of mechanical weakening of the frame because of the new welded concepts is going to be tested for the case of the SRM Welded ground stud. The results will show an increase in fatigue resistance of at least 20% compared to the current ground screw. Furthermore, the strength of the welded interface will show higher proof load than the stud itself. The welded nuts, tested with torque loading, will show a sufficient performance as well. The electrical tests present an expected decrease in ground resistance of 40% for the welded stud and an increase of 28% for the welded nuts, compared with the current ground screw. The conclusion of this Master Thesis states the recommendation of the implementation of a new grounding method through the SRM Welded ground stud. Although, some modifications in the transportation process of the frames might be needed because of the new protruding parts, pointing an estimated distance of 20mm from the frame surface.<br>När det gäller jordad elanslutning i lastbilar och bussar, har kraven på jordning i tunga fordon samlats och utvärderats.

Abstract:
Racial equality in the United States educational system has long been and continues to be a source of debate. Specifically, the disparities between whites and other minority groups have been increasingly more critical. Blacks and Latinos consistently score lower than whites on standardized tests and academic course work. There have been several explanations given for poorer school performance by certain minority groups than whites. In this dissertation, I explore the black white achievement gap through the examination of one widely known explanation, oppositional culture theory. This research investigates the major tenets of oppositional culture theory and the contemporary multicultural navigator concept. Using a grounded theory method of analysis, I examine the connections between suppositions of the theory and black students in the Upward Bound academic achievement program.

More precisely, we show how a recently developed duality theory for clones can be used to dualize clones over bounded lattices into the framework of Formal Concept Analysis, where they can be investigated with techniques very di erent from those that universal algebraists are usually armed with. We also illustrate this approach with some small examples.

Abstract:
This report presents a master thesis within the subject product development in Royal Institute of Technology college. This work was on behalf of Weda AB which manufactures underwater cleaning solutions where existing hose connection between the robot and hose would be developed. The goal with this project was to develop the hose connection so it would relieve the hose, and also be constructed cheaper than the original hose connection. These goals are presented in a terms of a prototype and a price quote from the subcontractor. This project has followed the general product development process where a need was identified to develop the existing hose connection. Ideas were generated to satisfy the need. The ideas were executed by a deeper understandning of the manufacturing process and the using of the CAD and simulation to create a prototype. The project resulted in satisfying the project goals by a price quote given by the subcontractor with a price reduction of 35% by the hose connection. The further developed concept could also by theory and the prototype that was created offload the hose with the hose connection which cooperates in the same direction the hose is being pulled at.

Abstract:
A huge gap exists today: from one side, the worldwide predominant empire of the multinationals which operate without boundaries becoming more powerful than the States, and from the other side, the lack of the jurisdiction to reach out what is going on outside its own territory. The progressive world amalgamation, the failure of the welfare state, flexible specialization and of multistate governance, are the four key factors that posed and still are posing challenges to labor movements bringing the Multinational to exploit the advantage of the lack of workers' protection as well as their low wages. Therefore the corporate social responsibility and the knowledge of international standards of all the voluntary/involuntary tools can make a real difference in today’s economic scenario restricting the ‘supremacy’ of MNEs. Particularly, the CSR can be thought as a way to improve the quality of business and supply labor operations: it can increases the image and the reputation of the company, attract and retain employees, engage with local communities and the local government. Adopting a responsible vision to operate will bring new significant values to the company.

Gresock, Joseph Aaron. "Finding Combinatorial Connections between Concepts in the Biomedical Literature." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32441.

Full text
Abstract:
There are now a multitude of articles published in a diversity of journals providing information about genes, proteins, pathways, and entire processes. Each article investigates particular subsets of a biological process, but to gain insight into the functioning of a system as a whole, we must computationally integrate information across multiple publications. This is especially important in problems such as modeling cross-talk in signaling networks, designing drug therapies for combinatorial selectivity, and unraveling the role of gene interactions in deleterious phenotypes, where the cost of performing combinatorial screens is exorbitant. In this thesis, we present an automated approach to biological knowledge discovery from PubMed abstracts, suitable for unraveling combinatorial relationships. It involves the systematic application of a `storytelling' algorithm followed by a series of filtering and compression operations over the mined stories. Given a start and end publication, typically with little or no overlap in content, storytelling identifies a chain of intermediate publications from one to the other, such that neighboring publications have significant content similarity. Stories discovered thus provide an argued approach to relate distant concepts through compositions of related concepts. The chains of links employed by stories are then mined to find frequently reused sub-stories, which can be compressed to yield compact templates of connections. We demonstrate a successful application of storytelling to finding combinatorial connections between biological concepts using two application case studies.<br>Master of Science

Thu¨rmer, Leung Andrea. "Dragon business : how the traditional concept of ‘guanxi’ works in modern day China." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/10283.

Abstract:
There has been undoubtedly a rapid economic growth in China over the last few decades and globalization has affected many business practices in China. Therefore this study addressed the interesting question of how the traditional concept of ‘guanxi’ works in modern day China. This was investigated through the lived experiences and perceptions of how Hong Kong executives establish business relationships in China. This research is important because ‘guanxi’ has often been associated with the success factor of business practices in China. Through a qualitative research methodology this research found that the practices of ‘guanxi’ take a changing and integrated approach. While some elements including favours and benefits have changed to become more indirect, less materialistic and depend on trust, other elements like socializing, hierarchy and the long term orientation in a business context have decreased in importance. Further the different experiences in the government sector, different company size, geographic locations in China, as well as the emergence of a new generation, have shown that the formation of networks cannot be generalized, but take different approaches depending on the situation. The significance of this is that ‘guanxi’ is less important for large organizations and the new generation of Western influenced managers in China. Finally while experiences of ‘guanxi’ change, they take a more international perspective while maintaining some traditional elements such as face. This suggests that Chinese business practices combine and accept apparent opposite values of international and traditional practices.

Abstract:
Mathematics requires a vast foundational knowledge in order for students to be successful as they advance through the years. Often times, it is common for teachers to teach these foundational skills over and over to ensure mastery prior to students' advancement. Given this fact, my capstone project was dedicated to increasing students' conceptual knowledge of mathematics through the use of concept mapping in the classroom. This project spanned a total of four math investigations, with two of the investigations taught using concept mapping in addition to the regular curriculum. Data collected to identify the effects of mapping on conceptual understanding, long-term memory, motivation and teacher professionalism included; preunit, postunit, and delayed assessments, interviews, journal entries, surveys, and the concept maps themselves. The results of the study were mixed. Concept mapping had positive impact on conceptual understanding in general. Data also indicate that mapping within the classroom increased student motivation. Finally, the results indicate that concept mapping had a positive impact on my goals as a teacher and my professionalism within the community.

In this day and age, the Internet provides the biggest linkage of information, personal data and information, social contact facilities, entertainment and electronic repository for all things including software downloads and tools, online books and technical descriptions, music and movies - both legal and illegal [Clarke, 1994]. With the increasing bandwidth in the last few years worldwide, it is possible to access the so-called "Triple-Play-Solutions" - Voice over lP, High-Speed-Internet and Video on Demand. More than 100 million subscribers have signed on across Asia, Europe, and the Americas in 2007, and growth is likely to continue steadily in all three. As broadband moves into the mainstream, it is reshaping the telecommunications, cable and Internet access industrie [Beardsley, Scott and Doman, Andrew, and EdinMC Kinsey, Par, 2003]. Cisco [Cisco, 2012], one of the biggest network companies, will expect more than 966 exabytes (nearly 1 zettabyte) per year or 80.5 exabytes per month in 2015 and the "Global IP traffic has increased eightfold over the past 5 years, and will increase fourfold over the next 5 years. Overall, IP traffic will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 32 percent from 2010 to 2015" . More and more types of sensible data flow between different recipients. News from around the world are transferred within seconds from the one end to the other end of the world, and affect the financial market, stock exchange [Reuters, 2012] and also bring down whole governments. For instance, worldwide humoil might ensue if a hacker broke into the web-server of an international newspaper or news channel like N-TV in Germany or BBC in England and displayed messages of a political revolution in Dubai or the death of the CEO from Microsoft or IBM.

Slye, Jeffrey. "UNDERGRADUATE MATHEMATICS STUDENTS’ CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THEIR GROUP HOMOMORPHISM AND LINEAR TRANSFORMATION CONCEPT IMAGES." UKnowledge, 2019. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/math_etds/65.

Full text
Abstract:
It is well documented that undergraduate students struggle with the more formal and abstract concepts of vector space theory in a first course on linear algebra. Some of these students continue on to classes in abstract algebra, where they learn about algebraic structures such as groups. It is clear to the seasoned mathematician that vector spaces are in fact groups, and so linear transformations are group homomorphisms with extra restrictions. This study explores the question of whether or not students see this connection as well. In addition, I probe the ways in which students’ stated understandings are the same or different across contexts, and how these differences may help or hinder connection making across domains. Students’ understandings are also briefly compared to those of mathematics professors in order to highlight similarities and discrepancies between reality and idealistic expectations. The data for this study primarily comes from clinical interviews with ten undergraduates and three professors. The clinical interviews contained multiple card sorts in which students expressed the connections they saw within and across the domains of linear algebra and abstract algebra, with an emphasis specifically on linear transformations and group homomorphisms. Qualitative data was analyzed using abductive reasoning through multiple rounds of coding and generating themes. Overall, I found that students ranged from having very few connections, to beginning to form connections once placed in the interview setting, to already having a well-integrated morphism schema across domains. A considerable portion of this paper explores the many and varied ways in which students succeeded and failed in making mathematically correct connections, using the language of research on analogical reasoning to frame the discussion. Of particular interest were the ways in which isomorphisms did or did not play a role in understanding both morphisms, how students did not regularly connect the concepts of matrices and linear transformations, and how vector spaces were not fully aligned with groups as algebraic structures.

Whitenack, Russell D. "Design and analysis of solder connections using accelerated approximate procedure with disturbed state concept." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/280662.

Full text
Abstract:
The accelerated approximate procedure developed and used herein for analysis, design and parametric optimization in electronic packaging is based on the disturbed state concept (DSC) and the hierarchical single surface (HISS) constitutive models. Over the past many years the benefits of the DSC/HISS model, compared to those of available plasticity models, have been demonstrated and validated for a wide range of materials and solder connections. When the DSC/HISS model is implemented in a two-dimensional finite element code, it is well suited for failure analyses of lead/tin solder connections under cyclic thermal and mechanical loading that are typically occur in electronic packages. Unfortunately, an analysis of a single solder connection, for approximately 4000 or more cycles, can require much effort and computer time, which may be too long to be of practical use. The accelerated approximate procedure significantly reduces the effort and the analysis time to approximately 10 to 15 minutes on a Pentium 4, 3.2 GHz personal computer. The main emphasis of this dissertation is the use of the unified DSC model with the finite element procedure to predict the behavior of chip-substrate solder connections. The DSC code is used to validate the performance of a number of packages (144 BPGA, 313 PBGA) tested in the laboratory under thermomechanical loading. Using the accelerated approximate procedure, the effect of the variable thickness solder connection in a plane stress idealization is compared with that of the constant thickness assumption, and a three-dimensional analysis. It shows that the analysis with variable thickness (in plane stress idealization) yields improved results. The accelerated approximate procedure is then used to perform parametric design analyses of a solder connection by varying a number of important factors such as connection size, shape and misalignment. The effects of varying the DSC/HISS parameters on cycle life are also analyzed. The results of this research can be used for design, analysis and failure life prediction of solder connections in electronic packages. The accelerated approximate procedure is considered to yield improved results compared to other available modeling methods.

Abstract:
Connecting rod are found in most combustion engines and transmits thrust from the piston to the crankshaft. The connecting rod needs to withstand forces from the piston and inertia forces which results in axial tension, compression stresses and bending. Today the most common manufacturing techniques in automotive industry are drop-forging, die-casting and the Powder Metallurgy technique used is powder-forging. In this Master Thesis different connecting rod designs for a single press PM manufacturing process were created and evaluated as a part of Höganäs AB's Total Powder Metal Car project, TPMC. This paper will serve as a basis for future connecting rod projects at Höganäs AB when choosing a suitable connecting rod design. The main objective of this Master Thesis is to evaluate different designs in regards to the following: Buckling strength Fatigue life Manufacturing rating The study shows that there is evidence that a single pressed connecting rod is possible. No absolute answer of which design is the best is given in this paper since in depends on different parameters and application. For each parameter examined there are results presented and arguments for and against each design which can aid designers in future work. Suggestions of improvement on both the method and on the designs are presented in respect to the results. The improvements may potentially increase the fatigue life, buckling strength and improve manufacturability.

<p>Manufacturing is becoming a crucial part of now-a-days fast growing economies and increase of earth’s population. Recently manufacturing is changing rapidly, different manufacturing strategies are being implemented, the conceptual understanding for manufacturing is changed, and new ways of producing products are showing up. Automation has been the essential term regarding the modern manufacturing processes. The humanmachine sharing is playing a major role in the production systems, and the most elegant thing is to create and design the appropriate level for interaction between them depending on the desired outcome in the production area. Technological innovation is the implementation of new more efficient production method by achieving qualitative improvements of the goods and services in a specific area in this paper’s case is a production system. This paper is regarding the importance of the correct production system being chosen for an organization regarding the right level of automation (LoA) being used, which is a way of controlling the overall effectiveness of the system.  Different approaches and methods are going to be used for demonstrating the choice of  the exact and right level of automation and the possibility of changing it by introducing and implementing the ongoing DYNAMO research on a different conceptual solutions for a foundry application in Factory-in-a-Box. "Sensory and Motor Interventions for Very Early School-age Children: a Cluster Pragmatic Randomised Controlled Trial Examining Effect on Development, Behaviour and Academic Learning Outcomes." Thesis, Australian Catholic University, 2018. https://acuresearchbank.acu.edu.au/download/7a01e0af69ee176b895a5b0693e2e0868cef838dbdaa90830a779a2994c8d835/2059817/MILES_2018_Sensory_and_motor_interventions_for_very.pdf.

Abstract:
Sensory and motor interventions are implemented in schools with the aim to improve children's development, behaviour and academic learning outcomes, albeit with limited research evidence of effect. These are particularly used as an early intervention with very early school-age children in an effort to ease the transition to formal schooling and enhance school readiness. This thesis presents a six-phase study undertaken to examine the effect of one such intervention. The aim of this study was to determine any effect from a mixed sensorimotor and sensory integration group intervention, on early academic skills and cognitive, behavioural and socioemotional development of very early school-age children in the school setting, by using a two-year, un-blinded, cluster randomized controlled trial. A scoping exercise undertaken in Phase 1 determined the nature and extent of intervention use within schools in the study setting. A literature review, undertaken as Phase 2, identified a variety of intervention types and approaches, narrowing the focus to those using an impairment-orientation approach to intervention, with particular focus on those using a sensory integration frame of reference or mixed sensorimotor approach. A scoping review of published and unpublished research trials of interventions, undertaken in Phase 3, identified a suitable intervention to use in a research trial. The Learning Connections School Program is classifiable as a mixed sensorimotor and sensory integration group intervention using an impairment-orientation approach, where some type of learning, behavioural or developmental impairment is assumed for many children within the general school population. In Phase 4, an evaluative literature review determined suitable measurement instruments to use in a trial. The Astronaut Invented Spelling Test (2nd ed.) and the Sutherland Phonological Awareness Test – Revised were selected for their Australian norms, low cost and high usability to measure early language skills. The Draw a Person test met suitability requirements to measure cognition, with universal norms, use in international research, high usability and low cost. The Behavior Assessment System for Children (2nd ed.) - Teacher Rating Scales was selected for its high technical adequacy, excellent computerised scoring and familiarity to members of the research team. Two sets of brief, multiple-proficiency mathematics measures, Early Mathematics Concepts A and B (EMCA, EMCB), were specifically developed for this study. These included mathematical computation concepts suitable to the two age-groups in the trial. A pilot study undertaken in Phase 5 enabled pilot-testing of the selected instruments and intervention in the study setting, to confirm the suitability and feasibility of their use within the study setting for a research trial. In Phase 6, a two-year cluster pragmatic un-blinded randomised controlled trial was conducted in 2012 and 2013. Schools (n = 116) in one large Catholic Church Archdiocese in Brisbane, Queensland with at least one Prep class, the first year of formal schooling, were eligible to participate in the research trial, with recruitment via email invitation to School Principals. Ethical approval was obtained from the Australian Catholic University Human Research Ethics Committee and further approval for a research trial was obtained from Brisbane Catholic Education. School principals, teachers and parents provided consent to participate, while assent from children was also sought as a form of respect and engagement. Following consent, 480 children across ten schools participated. The intervention, The Learning Connections School Program, was implemented for 20 minutes daily in the classroom by the trained class teacher for the intervention arm (n = 286), while children in the control arm (n = 194) attended schooling as usual (no intervention). Multivariable analysis using the Generalized Estimating Equations modelling approach and accounting for the effects of clustering and time, showed a positive effect for intervention on two mathematics skills measures (EMCA, EMCB). Children in the intervention arm were significantly more likely to have higher scores in mathematics compared to those in the control arm (p < 0.05). Despite a relatively large incidence-rate ratio for EMCA (3.9, 95%CI 1.45-11.02), the crude effect of the intervention on math scores was small (Cohen’s d=0.21). No effect was seen for gender, location, school socioeconomic/educational advantage score, or on measures of early language development, drawing or developmental and behavioural outcomes, despite anecdotal teacher reports of enhanced school-readiness. This study adds Level 1.c evidence in regard to such interventions in school settings. The practical significance of small absolute differences in test scores needs to be considered with regard to intervention funding in each school setting. Despite being a group, low-cost, easy-to-implement early intervention, it is difficult to recommend sensorimotor interventions based on such limited evidence of effect. Further research should focus on visuospatial integration, which may influence mathematical achievement, and specific school-readiness intervention effects.

Abstract:
People around the world who are working in companies and organisations need to collaborate, and in their collaboration use information managed by different information systems. The requirements of information systems to be interoperable are therefore apparant. While the technical problems, of communicating or sharing information between different information systems, have become less difficult to solve, the attention has turned to other aspects of interoperability. Such aspects concern the bussiness processes, the knowledge, the syntax and the semantics that involves the information managed by information systems. Enterprise modelling is widely used to achieve integration solutions within enterprises and is a research area both for the integration wihin an enterprise (company or organisation) and the integration between several different enterprises. Enterprise modelling takes into account several of the aspects, mentioned as important for interoperability, in the models that are created. This thesis describes a research which has resulted in the connector view concept. The main contribution with this framework comprises a model structure and an approach, for performing the modelling of the collaboration between several partners in an extended enterprise. The purpose of the enterprise models thus created, by using the connector view concept, is to find solutions to interoperability problems, that exist in the collaboration between several enterprises.

Abstract:
This work investigates new gate drive power supply configurations and a novel multi-steppackaging concept in order to improve the performance of series-connected SiC-MOSFETs. The new gate drive configurations are proposed in order to reduce noise currents that circulate in the control part of the electrical system. Furthermore, a new gate drive power supply is proposed to increase the dv/dt of the switching cell. These improvements, i.e., noise current reduction and dv/dt boosting, are achieved by modifying the impedance of the gate drive circuitry. The novel multi-step packaging concept is proposed in order to improve the voltage sharing performance. The proposed package geometry considers optimal dielectric isolation for each device leading to a multi-step geometry. It has a significant impact on the parasitic capacitances introduced by the packaging structure that are responsible for voltageunbalances. The new gate driver configurations and the proposed multi-step packaging concepts are introduced and analysed thanks to equivalent models and time domain simulations. Then, experimental set-ups are performed to confirm that the proposed concepts are better than traditional ones in terms of voltage balancing, switching speed and conducted EMI reduction

Topka, Marzena. "Ruptured Spaces: cracking Deleuze and Guattari's lines of flight in contemporary art practice." Thesis, Curtin University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/729.

Full text
Abstract:
In what ways can a relationship be drawn between contemporary art practice dealing with ruptured/destabilised space and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of lines of flight? This is the starting point of my thesis. Central to the question is the control of space through mapping, measurement or invention of categories (classification systems) that fulfill a vital pragmatic role of organising, locating and identifying. Postmodern cultural theorists recognise that these categories can also condition and place boundaries on the way we relate to or understand our environment, and for that reason they seek to examine and shake the foundations of Western systems of organisation. For Postmodern theorists the key to alleviating the unwanted symptoms is to identify the locus of power and overturn it. Deleuze and Guattari stand in opposition to an externally imposed system of organisation, however their approach takes into account organisation at a micro level. They developed a toolbox of concepts that could potentially be deployed to bring forth a subjectivity based on creativity rather than control. The focus of my writing is on Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of lines of flight. They propose a way of being and thinking that allows for these creative connections to emerge. These molecular connections have the potential to reconfigure habitual or molar ways of being or imagining. Deleuze and Guattari define space in terms of striated or smooth (space that is interchangeable, and in constant flow). Their spatial approach is indispensable in providing a context for my discussion of lines of flight. Deleuze and Guattari also recognise a social dimension to space that allows for connections to be made between actual (architectural) spaces and socially constructed value systems. In my practice I am interested in how a sense of destabilisation and deterritorialisation can be activated in space via installation to challenge the placement of socially conditioned or self-constructed boundaries. This thesis consists of 25,000 word thesis and 3 DVDs evidencing the creative component of my practice-led research and associated exhibitions. Both the written thesis and creative practice respond to the same question and explore the analytical and pragmatic effectiveness of the concept of lines of flight in relation to contemporary art dealing with ruptured space.

Out of several data mining techniques, association rule mining and bi-clustering are two major complementary tasks for these topics. These tasks gained much importance in many domains in recent years. However, no approach was proposed to perform them in one process. This poses the problems of resources required (memory, execution times and data accesses) to perform independent extractions and of the unification of the different results. We propose an original approach for extracting different categories of knowledge patterns while using minimum resources. This approach is based on the frequent closed patterns theoretical framework and uses a novel suffix-tree based data structure to extract conceptual minimal representations of association rules, bi-clusters and classification rules. These patterns extend the classical frameworks of association and classification rules, and bi-clusters as data objects supporting each pattern and hierarchical relationships between patterns are also extracted. This approach was applied to the analysis of HIV-1 and human protein-protein interaction data. Analyzing such inter-species protein interactions is a recent major challenge in computational biology. Databases integrating heterogeneous interaction information and biological background knowledge on proteins have been constructed. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can efficiently process these databases and that extracted conceptual patterns can help the understanding and analysis of the nature of relationships between interacting proteins

Abstract:
This work presents different novel gate drive unit (GDU) concepts for IGBT and reverse conducting IGBT (RC-IGBT). They have been experimentally tested with medium voltage class IGBT modules (1200...1700V/650…1400A) and a RC-IGBT module (1200V/200A). The switching behaviour of the RC-IGBT was investigated, and a new trigger pulse pattern to drive the RC-IGBT was developed, designed and implemented. The experimental results showed that the switching losses were reduced by 20% in the RC-IGBT compared to the switching losses of a standard diode. Two novel schemes are introduced to estimate the collector current through the IGBT, based on the measurement of the voltage across the internal stray inductance of the IGBT module. Furthermore, a GDU concept was derived to balance the on-state collector currents of parallel-connected IGBTs, reducing the current imbalance to 5%. Also, a new fast short circuit protection method (FSCP) for IGBT modules was developed, designed and implemented in another GDU, allowing turning-off the considered IGBT in less than 1μs, reducing the IGBT stress. Another scheme implemented in a GDU features an improved gate current switching profile of the IGBT, which reduces the switching losses by 25% compared to the standard switching method. In order to reduce the conduction losses, a GDU with an increased turn-on gate-emitter voltage (larger than 20 V) was investigated. In the investigated IGBT, the on-state losses were reduced by 18% when a gate-emitter voltage of 35V is used compared to when a gate-emitter voltage of 15V is used. All these new GDU concepts have been implemented with a simple and inexpensive electronic circuitry, which is an important feature for a possible industrial implementation.

Abstract:
This thesis came about a very large and complex Enterprise Information System (EIS) containing a huge amount of information that moves through a company consisted of a main group and about fifty subsidiaries. At the beginning, computer science resources of each business unit stored structured data, according to a local business logic. The descriptions of these sources, intended first of all for computer specialists, were saved in text documents. They were not meant to help system sharing and understanding by different types of actors, who provide the business content. It's also true for the enterprise repositories, which contain fundamental business knowledge. Thus, finding the relevant information allowing fast and easy access to sources that meet the expectations and constraints of business actors, became a main problematic of IS. Since ten years, our company aims to address this problem by a strategic approach of IS governance included in the process of the IS planning. We are involved in the activity of business data repositories brought under control and information exchanges standardization and simplification between applications. Our goal is to provide a strategic view of knowledge sharing by promoting the IS actor collaboration in a business process context, or in business activity. To achieve this, we propose an approach for the construction of a layer of the IS based on new functional concepts: the "Reference Enterprise Repository (RER)" and " a priori connectors ". The first is about a transverse enterprise repository corresponding to a business context. The second is logical connections ensuring interoperability between applications that weren’t designed to coexist. From a technological point of view, the RER is based on semantic modelling and the knowledge representation. The "a priori connectors" involve integration technologies of Semantic Web Services. The thesis develops skills such as service-oriented middleware architectures, modelling semantics of documents, modelling IS and Information Retrieval (IR) techniques. All these subjects are part of the DRIM (Distribution and Multimedia Information Retrieval) team’s scientific project of the Department "Information, Knowledge and Services' at the LIRIS (Laboratoire d'Informatique en Images and Systems information), CNRS UMR 5205

Abstract:
The purpose of this master thesis is to present a comparison between the factors that affects an environmental investment. This is done through applying a theoretical framework on the factors affecting a company’s existing appraisal model for environmental investments. The company that was a part of this thesis asked at an initial stage for confidentiality, therefore it is called the Company in this thesis. The Company that contributes with the appraisal model is a multination-al group with operations in many different industries, but with a focus on the Nordic countries and products that may be linked to the agricultural sector. The theoretical framework has its base in the concepts of value and investments and their connection to the environment and the envi-ronmental investment. The identified factors in the theoretical framework are:  The investment’s addition to the value creation to the company  The investment’s environmental impact  How the investment affects the production  Demands from society  Customer demands From these, the factors affecting a company’s existing appraisal model were compared and their connection to theoretical framework was judged according to a 5-grade scale. Information from the Company was acquired through semi-structured interviews with representatives from the Company. The largest deviation is how the company considers an investment’s contribution to the produced value. Because of this imperfection does the company's model not fully incorporate the produced value and that an environmental investment is irreversible. The overall conclusion is that the Company has identified the same factors as the theoretical framework. The Company has though chosen to use their existing methods and performance indicators that don’t fully incorporate the factors in the theoretical framework. The largest devia-tions are how the company considers an investment’s contribution to the produced value and that it should be considered as irreversible. The Company must therefore in order to enhance their appraisal model develop new performance measures for the factors.

Abstract:
Photographs are used to reinforce arguments about our history, our culture, and our identity. With billions of photographs now available online, growing numbers of cameras capturing every moment, and people sharing the resulting images in an instant across the globe, what is the connection between even a single photograph and the basic truth of the reality it purports to represent? Focusing on geographic location, my research interest for my creative practice is in how photographs document and represent place. Place helps to define who we are. Place informs us about our past and about the foundations of our community and our culture. Photographs help to define place because they provide evidence for what is there, what was there, and what happened there. In my studio practice I explore the use of rephotography to highlight the differences in material form of place over time. The exhibition explores the place of the photograph in the modern world by comparing photographs taken in the past with those taken in the same places almost forty years later with a series of photographs taken in 1973 in and around Cronulla Street, south of Sydney, and rephotographs of the same scenes in 2011. They show sometimes subtle, sometimes clear, changes in our environment and behaviour that go unnoticed without photographic evidence. To better understand what the photographs in my exhibition are actually saying to us, and to explore what photographs from the past actually tell us, for my dissertation I examined a number of photographs from a more distant, nineteenth or early twentieth century past that proved to be ambiguous. On the basis of my research, I argue that the model of the nineteenth century photograph as an indexical truth, modulated by cultural interpretation, is more complex than is generally thought. Online access to substantially expanded resources through more sophisticated digital tools today shows clearly that the staged photographs should not be considered as 'false' simply because they are not documents of true events. They give us access to the way people then constructed their reality. This offers us useful information about the way they thought about themselves and their society. I also argue that online digital tools, the resources they allow us to access easily, and the opportunities provided by the internet to interact with each other change the rules significantly for Australian institutions of photographic history - galleries, libraries, archives and museums. These institutions are yet to realise the implications of these changed rules, and to embrace the opportunities provided by them to engage actively with individual researchers.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立勤益科技大學<br>工業工程與管理系<br>95<br>Many businesses build their own system to handle the End-of-Life product to satisfy the rising eco-awareness and to face the fact of limited resource. Disassembly planning should be considered seriously. Disassembly means to remove the connectors among parts so that parts can be independent from others. It makes the business be able to adopt the optimal strategy of processing these independent parts. Connector is a concept that describes how parts combine with each other. It consists of combination, tool, and direction. Combination and tool will drive the cost. Order of removing connectors depends on direction. Connector-Part Diagram and Release Diagram derive from connector. Stapler will be a case to show how to build a connector-part diagram. The first diagram points out which parts are constrained by a certain connector .The direction-interference matrix plays an important role for transforming a Connector-Part Diagram into a Release Diagram. The Release Diagram represents that which Parts will be released while a specific Connector is removed. After building of Released Diagram, disassembly sequence planning can be started. In each round of algorithm, the connector with maximum profit will be removed. The output of the algorithm is a disassembly sequence based on Connector.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立勤益科技大學<br>工業工程與管理系<br>107<br>In recent years, industrial changes are rapidly changing and developing, the replacement of product is getting faster. Therefore, this change has accelerated the consumption of resources and energy, and has greatly affected the ecology of the Earth. People start thinking about the environmental protection issues. To improve this problem, we must trace the origin of corporate activities - product design. If we improving the reuse of recycled materials means reducing the use of natural resources. This should be the meaning of green design, and the current environment can be taken care of and protected. Green design means that energy conservation, pollution prevention, recycling, design reduction, and easy disassembly are included in the product design at the product stage, so that the designed green products can better meet environmental protection demands. Furthermore, the disassembly cost is calculated in conjunction with the connector disassembly time matrix, and the optimal disassembly sequence is determined using the greedy algorithm. The optimal solution can be called the complete connector-based disassembly planning. Target connector-based disassembly plan can be established by evaluating the main functional considerations and disassembly values from the FAST (Function Analysis System Technique). Designers can redesign the product according to the connector-based disassembly sequence and FAST functional model. Through compact design (reduction, volume, weight and material savings), the connector module can be improved to reduce disassembly costs and to be more compliant with green design. In this study, the proposed method is illustrated by some examples such as fixed support and stapler.

Abstract:
University of Technology Sydney. Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.<br>This research explores new approaches to composition and performance with interactive audiovisual systems which draw on the ideas of Gaston Bachelard. The composition Blue Space for oboe and interactive audiovisual system is a central component of this thesis. This practice-based research project explores music composition and performance incorporating sound, visuals and gesture. Written from the perspective of a composer-performer, it examines ways in which sound and image can be connected in a musical context. Although this work is highly individual, it is contextualised within the existing knowledge and practices of audiovisual music. The work builds upon my background as a classical musician, and expands the scope of my artistic practice. It offers practice-based insights into composition and performance with visuals, gestures, and interactive systems. A set of related subthemes arising from practice over the course of a professional career as an oboist are explored. In the process of this work, I challenge the notion that the oboe should be limited to standard repertoire and traditional styles of music making. A new approach to performance is developed that blends elements of theatre, dance and improvisation, culminating in new repertoire for the oboe. Performance gestures in which the body functions as a controller of the visuals are a feature of the work. Enacting, painting, mixing, interacting and choreographing are the five categories of gesture identified, illustrating different ways in which themes of the piece can be linked to visual forms. The new work Blue Space demonstrates the important role of analogy in the linking of diverse media. It explores the connections between music and water and questions why water is such a prominent source of inspiration. Gaston Bachelard’s philosophical text Water and Dreams is a key reference in the investigation of the role of water in artistic practice.

Lizama, Arcos Ignacio Esteban. "New gate drive unit concepts for IGBTs and reverse conducting IGBTs." Doctoral thesis, 2016. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A30672.

Full text

Sothmann, Jan-Niklas. "Nature and Well-Being. How young people possess and profit from sustainability traits." Doctoral thesis, 2018. https://repositorium.ub.uni-osnabrueck.de/handle/urn:nbn:de:gbv:700-20180829555.

Abstract:
Up to now, politics and societies from all over the world have sought an economy that is built on the idea of continual growth to establish a wealthy future and achieve societal prosperity. At the same time, people have neglected to consider that the resulting environmental pollution is the largest cause of disease and death in the world today. Therefore, it appears sensible to ensure that people’s well-being and nature’s well-being is uncoupled from profit-orientated aims. To break the circle of continual growth and the decreasing well-being of humans and nature, individual sustainability traits that are able to foster a transition to sustainable development need to be explicitly identified. Today’s young people will presumably face an even more severe level of consequences resulting from continual growth, which will reach far into the future, thereby affecting the living environment of future generations even more drastically. Therefore, this dissertation aims to answer the question of how young people possess and profit from their sustainability traits in terms of well-being. This work approaches this question by empirically investigating different interrelations between environmental values, the perception of environments (including the perception of naturalness and the perception of aesthetics), environmental concern and well-being in the context of young people. The empirical section is divided into three parts that investigate the different relationships step by step. These three parts are based on three different quantitative questionnaire surveys of young people in Germany. In the first survey (N = 229; Mage = 13.27 years, SD = 2.37 years), the relation between secondary school students’ human-nature relationship as a sustainability trait and their well-being was investigated. Analyses showed that the sustainability trait of human-nature relationships was significantly related to young people’s age-dependent well-being through nature perception in terms of naturalness and aesthetics as well as through individual nature connection. Young people were shown to profit from nature as resource for their own well-being. A positive human-nature relationship could be described as an important requirement for people to achieve sustainable development. In a second inquiry, university students (N = 237; Mage = 22.12 years, SD = 3.09 years) with a focus on the interrelations of sustainability traits that showed relations to people’s well-being in past research were surveyed. The results describe the interrelations between the specified sustainability traits of environmental values, a newly developed scale that theoretically and empirically validated affective nature connection, cognitive nature connection, and environmental concern. The findings indicate that the chosen sustainability traits mutually contribute to each other’s impact and do not preclude each other. Future research based on the results of the two described studies will likely show that sustainability traits are desirable characteristics and useful attributes that are available all over the world, no matter what a person’s age. As a final step, secondary school students’ environmental concern and well-being were quantitatively surveyed (N = 2173; Mage = 14.56 years, SD = 1.45 years) to analyze how environmental concern as a sustainability trait predicts young people’s well-being. The children’s and adolescents’ sustainability trait of environmental concern was able to predict young people’s well-being, with a clear dependence on age. The obtained outcomes supporting the aim to possess nature as a resource of well-being need to be considered in terms of young people’s age. Youth seem to experience sensitive periods of time in which the youth’s sustainability traits evidently act differently than in other stages of life. Hence it is important to point out that especially young people need age-appropriate treatment in terms of education for sustainable development to successfully foster young people’s sustainability traits. The main goal of this dissertation was to explore and identify in-depth insights into young people’s sustainability traits and their interrelations as well as the connections to young people’s well-being. As such interrelations between sustainability traits and well-being meet the aims of sustainable development as well as political and societal aims for a healthy future life environment for everyone which is expected of continual (economic) growth up to the present time, age-dependent education for sustainable development could address the need for young people to become progressive decision makers who create future-proof solutions for themselves and others, considering the constitution of a worthy life for present and future generations.

Scholtz, Ricardo Christian. "A critical evaluation of the VAT treatment of transactions commonly undertaken by a partnership." Thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/25988.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, I critically evaluate the VAT treatment of common partnership transactions that are encountered during the life of a partnership. Of great significance, is that at common law a partnership is not regarded as a person, but for VAT purposes it is treated as a separate person. This creates a strong dichotomy between the general legal nature, and the VAT character of a partnership transaction. The partnership and the VAT law dichotomy, is an important theme that runs through most of the thesis. Only once I have established the nature of the transaction for VAT purposes – whether in keeping with or differing from the common law – do I apply the relevant provisions of the VAT Act to determine the VAT implications of the transaction. An important general principle is that what is supplied or acquired by the body of persons who make up the partnership, within the course and scope of its common purpose, is for VAT purposes, supplied or acquired by the partnership as a separate person. I conclude that there are difficulties and uncertainties regarding the application of the provisions of the VAT Act to various partnership transactions. For the sake of certainty and simplicity, I propose amendments to the current provisions that are relevant to partnership transactions, and also propose additional provisions. The proposed amendments seek to align with the purpose of the VAT Act and the principles upon which it is based, and also to adhere to internationally accepted principles for a sound VAT system. I also pinpoint those aspects of the VAT Act that can be clarified by the SARS in an interpretation statement. I further identify issues that require more research, eg issues arising from a partnership’s participation in cross-border trade.<br>Mercantile Law<br>LL. D.
