Abstract: Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remains to be a challenging cerebrovascular disease. The mainstay of AIS management is endovascular reperfusion therapy, including thrombectomy and thrombolysis. However, ineffective (futile) reperfusion (FR) or reperfusion injury (RI) can be seen in a significant number of patients undergoing reperfusion strategy. In this article, we discuss two clinically relevant concepts known as “time window” and “tissue window” that can impact the clinical outcome of reperfusion therapy. We also explore patient risk factors, leading to FR and RI as well as an emergin

This article deals with aspects of newly emerging security challenges that military theoreticians and authors of security and defense strategic documents name ‘Hybrid Threats’. They currently present a significant challenge for the Alliance and its interests. Hybrid Threats involve adversaries (including states, rogue states, non-state actors or terrorist organizations) that may employ a combination of actions in an increasingly unconstrained operating environment in order to achieve their aims. Hybrid Threats may consist of a combination of every aspect of warfare and compound the activities

Abstract:
Abstract Background Chronic diseases like inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) can pose challenges to the self-concept of a patient. Illness identity (IID) describes a patient′s way to integrate a chronic illness into the self-concept distinguishing the dimensions rejection, engulfment, acceptance and enrichment. Associations between IID and psychological and physiological functioning have been shown in other chronic diseases, but haven’t been investigated in IBD. In this study, we focus on associations between IID and (i) psychosomatic well-being and (ii) response to biological therapy in patien

Four decades have passed since the first usage of the therapeutic vaccine in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). However, there is no approved regimen of vaccine therapy for the treatment of CHB. This is mainly attributable to faulty conception, an improper understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of CHB, and the impaired design of vaccine therapy for CHB. With the advent of new techniques and a better understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the genesis of CHB, the limitations and failures of previous regimens of therapeutic vaccines have been primarily

Abstract: Despite academic interest in the overall comparison of cognitive behavioral therapy with Stoicism, the notion of core beliefs is often neglected in the literature. In this paper, I address this by examining ethical concepts in Stoicism which are comparable to core beliefs in cognitive behavioral therapy. The first relevant concept is prolepseis , which is dispositions to form judgments. The second one is hexeis , used to describe interpretational and emotional tendencies. These are similar to core beliefs in various ways, including: 1) They are based on innate and environmental facto

Self-perceptions of competence are thought to mediate a person’s motivation to participate and persist in tasks under optimally challenging conditions. Little systematic research has been conducted related to the self-perceptions of physical competence in children with mental retardation and the influence on achievement motivation in this domain. Various models of self-concept are reviewed, followed by a discussion of self-concept and special populations. Preliminary data are presented on a modified pictorial scale of perceived physical competence for use with 7- to 12-year-old students with m

The concept of allogeneic cell therapy was first presented over 60 years ago with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. However, complications such as graft versus host disease (GVHD) and regimen-related toxicities remained as major obstacles. To maximize the effect of graft versus leukemia, while minimizing the effect of GVHD, donor lymphocyte infusion was utilized. This idea, which was used against viral infections, postulated that adoptive transfer of virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes could reconstitute specific immunity and eliminate virus infected cells and led to the idea of bank

The modern stage of medical development requires a multidisciplinary approach to studying the impact of treatment on human life. The social aspects are of great importance because the goal of treatment is to preserve or/and improve life. Therefore, the term "quality of life" is increasingly used in the world medical literature. The objectification of this indicator and its adaptation in practical medicine is a priority task. The concept of "quality of life" first appeared in 1958. In the future, this concept was developed in a research carried out by a group of professors at MIT (Massachusetts

In some ways, those persons who practise medicine have become of its victims. We wish to do the best for our patients. However, occasionally the advantages of the treatment may be marginal. Added to this is the spiraling cost of the medical therapy, something that doctors are aware of. To make the problem even more difficult, we have increasing awareness by patients and their families of the concepts of autonomy and patient's rights. They feel that they can demand treatment that the doctor may feel is of no or marginal benefit; possibly also at great expense. This card in these situations, tha
