AbstractIn this chapter we aim to unravel the importance of the link between three themes: location, Coworking Spaces (CSs), and the timed city concept. We argue that location, CSs, and timed cities are interdependent and complement each other. To do this, we use Malta as a case study, a small high densely populated, car dependent island state that has only been exposed to CSs in the previous decade. To support our argument, we conducted semi-structured interviews with two CS owners, four traditional employers, and an entity representing employers. The former provided their experiences of having CSs in Malta and the latter two discussed their perceptions of CSs. The reality and the importance of location are represented through Geographic Information Systems, by which we analyzed walkable areas within the catchment of the CSs. The findings highlight that location unravels the importance of micro-geography in the context of an island state when considering the applicability of CSs and the timed city concept. Furthermore, the research resonates with the literature with regard to issues associated with mobility, accessibility, job type, and peripherality.

In the early 1990s, Lotus created the concept of groupware with its revolutionary (for the time) product, Lotus Notes. For the first time, Lotus Notes tied together into one package various components needed for collaboration (an especially attractive premise for the SMB marketplace)—directories, electronic mail, group calendaring, file sharing, chat rooms, and so forth. This was the first attempt at creating a collaboration environment for teams and organizations to foster a sense of community and improve information sharing and communication. Early versions of Lotus Notes tended to be very top down—a central administrator was needed to set up a chat room, file sharing area, and the like. While Lotus Notes wasn’t very flexible, it was (in a pre-Web, pre-Intranet world) an attempt to improve collaboration at a time when teams were becoming increasingly geographically and organizationally dispersed.

Abstract Chapters 4, 5, and 6 all explore the implications of the way in which the boundaries of the labour commodity are constructed in law, focusing on the boundaries it constructs between work and non-work on one hand, and work and worker on the other. This chapter traces these boundaries through their articulation in the context of the evolution of working time regulation, paying close attention to the implications of a juridical conception of work that conceptualizes the latter through the lens of contractually mediated control over time. The chapter provides a detailed analysis of working time in the context of factory legislation, tracing its evolution to the present day in the context of the Working Time Regulations 1998, as influenced by EU law. The chapter uses this analysis to shed light on recent trends in the organization of work, including trends towards casualization, fragmentation, and overwork, and how this tends to ‘invisibilize’ certain forms of, or periods of, work, with not insignificant distributive implications.

In Chapter 10 of Capital Vol. 1—‘The Working Day’—Karl Marx reveals at least one central concern within his project: namely the relationship between labour time and free time as a site of antagonism under capitalism. In this chapter I offer a perspective on the politics of animal labour that takes the working day as a main site of problematization and contestation. I argue that while a concept of a ‘working day’ is applicable to some animal labourers, a defining characteristic of most animals labour under capitalism—particularly that of animals in intensive forms of agriculture—is the reality that the working day never stops: all time is labour time for these animals. I further argue that a focus on labour time offers a different and productive base for pro-animal politics, and for alliance building. At least one curious set of resonances here are the strong demands being made by other social movements—such as environmental justice movements—to ‘slow down capitalism’ through reduced work, reduced production, and reduced consumption.

Debates are an essential democratic institution in danger by the rise of Social Media. The advent of Fake News often referred to as the ‘crisis of trust’, has led to a substantial increase in debates that blend online and offline. It can be argued that blended approaches are not directly linked to increasing trustworthiness in the debate. To overcome this trust crisis and increase the reliability in debates, we introduce the HELIOSPHERE concept that seeks to use technological advances, such as Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality, to create a more fair, inclusive and transparent debate. The critical component for inclusiveness is Augmented Reality technology and 3D camera technology to hybridise the online and offline debating space and ensure that anyone who cannot be present can engage with the debate. For transparency and fairness, a key indicator of trust, an Artificial Intelligence dashboard is introduced to analyse and visualise speaking time, speaker gender, topic relatedness, bias detection sentiment in Real-Time. This work presents the overall theoretical concept focusing on academic and technical concepts to support reliable communication within debates.

The purpose of this chapter is to revisit the concept, ‘To See is to Break an Entanglement,’ through an exploration of insights from a three-year project (2020–2023), ‘Mapping the Empire: The Contemporary Legacy of Historical Trauma and Forced Displacement.’ The project arose from observations that have no explanation in classical physics, and sought to explore the significance of the ‘quantum effects’ that underpin the dynamics of a particular form of systems therapy and its potential adaptation to the analysis of global entanglements of past, present and future. Abstract:
This chapter will explore the concept of home school partnerships within British early years education. The advantages of effective relationships between home and school will be briefly outlined before the historical development of the concept discussed. It will be argued that home school interactions are historically situated within a deficit paradigm, wherein a desire to overcome social inequality is paramount. Consequently, enhancing learning through continuity and cohesion between home and school learning practices dominate professional perspectives on school-home relationships. Due to the growing influence of social constructivism, the relative position of parents within this exchange has changed over time and led to the inception of partnership working. Nonetheless, partnership working between home and school remains fraught with practical and conceptual complexities and may necessitate the mutual renegotiation of the constructs of ‘parent’ and ‘professional’. In turn, any renegotiation may require an understanding of the habits of thought underlying these constructs, as well as the time and space for renegotiation. Finally, overcoming inequality, the driving force behind current patterns of partnership working, may depend on systemic change, beyond enhancing the home learning environment, which the emphasis on partnership working may disguise.

A new node electrode concept is proposed for real-time monitoring of the degradation of concrete rebars and buried pipes and to measure the corrosion rate of the metals at selected locations over a large area. This paper introduces a new second generation wave energy converter concept named SEAREV [Systeme Electrique Autonome de Recuperation d’Energie des Vagues]. The working principle and linearized equations of the device are described. It is shown how energy absorption depends on the shape of the external floating body and on the mechanical characteristics of the moving mass. This allows to numerically optimize the geometry of the device. Latching control is used to further improve the capture width of the system, with success in regular waves.
