Full textAim: The overall aim of this thesis was to describe and explore everyday life in families with a child with ADHD and public health nurses’ role in relation to these families. Methods: An explorative and descriptive design with qualitative and quantitative methods was used. In Study I, data was collected with individual interviews with nine parents, and analyzed using phenomenology. In Study II, the data was collected with individual interviews with 17 family members, and analyzed with phenomenography. In Study III, data was collected with a questionnaire responded by 265 parents, and analyzed with statistics. In Study IV, data was collected with group- and individual interviews with 19 public health nurses, and analyzed with phenomenography. Main findings: The families’ everyday life was influenced by living in unpredictability, though they were striving for predictability. The experience of being a parent was described as contending and adapting every day, like windsurfing in unpredictable waters (I). The family tried to safeguard a functioning family in managing their everyday life and developing special skills, within the family and the society. They fought for acceptance and inclusion in relation to the social network and professionals (II). Parents’ sense of coherence, children’s behavior, support from social networks and community health services had all an impact on family functioning (III). The PHNs described their role as both a peripheral and a collaborating partner and they asked for guidelines and multidisciplinary collaboration (IV). Conclusions: Everyday life in families with ADHD is both demanding and giving. Acceptance and support from the social network and supervision from the professionals are essential. The public health nurse is in a unique position to support and supervise these families.

This dissertation focuses on the analysis of the goals implicit in the different offers of treatment for drug users, administered by the government in the city of Rio de Janeiro - where a practice is dedicated exclusively to children and adolescents in street situation. The approach to the phenomenon, that is, the experience of children and adolescents living on the streets, from the 1980s, and the prohibition on drugs regarded as illegal, are also intensified during this period, comprising two important points of analysis for contextualizing the theme discussed. The analysis of the growing prohibition and criminalization of drugs considered illicit (production, cultivation, consumption and sale), in the course of the twentieth century, pointed at economic, geo-economic and geopolitical roots, that make up the question. The occurrence of illicit drug use by children and adolescents living on the streets (and various other issues that derive from this) generates a situation of increasing criminalization and social accountability of these actors. As part of the scope of the discourse that strengthens the criminalization of drugs and all social actors that somehow relate to these, in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, two contradictory practices of treatment offer coexist. The practical implementation of the Protocol guidelines (Protocolo Especializado de Abordagem Social – Specialized Protocol of Social Approach), issued by the government of the city of Rio de Janeiro, and the concurrent implementation of treatment guidelines of the National Mental Health present contradictions and express the correlation of forces of social projects in conflict in society. Consultations were held with professionals and scholars in order to compose the analysis of the concepts of the two treatment practices of drug use, as well as the particularities of these when directed to children and adolescents in street situation presented in this Dissertation. To compose an analysis of concepts two treatment practices of drug use, and the particularities of these when directed to children and adolescents in street situation presented in this Dissertation, we conducted interviews with practitioners and scholars of the subject, by the application of semi-structured questionnaires. The research, a qualitative approach was approved by the Research Ethics Board of PUC - Rio, and authorization of respondents was previously requested.

Full textClassroom assessment is an essential component of teaching and learning. It should be an on-going process that improves instruction rather than a periodic evaluation of what has been achieved. This study was designed to investigate teachers’ and learners’ conceptions and experiences about assessment for learning (AfL) and its impact on learners’ performance in Life Science. Simple random sampling was used to select four schools from the uThungulu district to participate in the study. Two of the selected schools constituted the Treatment Condition while the other two served as the Comparison Group. Altogether, 160 Grade 11 learners (forty from each participating school) participated in the study – comprised of four intact classrooms, one from each participating school. Two teachers were trained to use AfL as an instructional approach, while the teachers of the Comparison Group used their usual instructional approaches. The topic being studied by all the learners were Animal Nutrition and Cellular Respiration, lasting six weeks for the two groups. In addition, 80 Life Science teachers also took part in the study as respondents on their assessment practices in the subject. Data were collected using pre- and post-tests for the learners and a questionnaire for the teachers. These were followed by semi-structured interviews with the two teachers of the Treatment Group and selected learners from the same group. The quantitative component of the study took the form of a Quasi-Experimental Pretest-Posttest Comparison Group Design, while the qualitative component employed a hermeneutical research approach. Data were collected using a test, questionnaire, survey and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that the current formative assessment practices used by Life Science teachers in uThungulu district are out of alignment with the principles of formative assessment as directed by the Department of Basic Education (DBE). Furthermore, the respondents’ conceptions of AfL did not influence their classroom assessment and instructional practices. On the question of learner performance following the six week instructional intervention, the study found that learners in the Treatment Group performed significantly higher than learners’ in the Comparison Group. From these results, recommendations are made to influence both policy and classroom practice. Investigating the wide variety of assessment practices has allowed me to come to understand the culture of assessment within the AfL approach, where assessment placed learners at the center of learning to help support the learning process. Learners’ views/experiences about AfL approach suggests that AfL instructional approach constitutes a better strategy that makes learning a more enjoyable and pleasant experience.

Full textThis Phd thesis is about horticulture, relations to plants, human relations around plants, and conceptions of life and living things in Japan. It presents an ethnographic fieldwork conducted among two groups of cultivators in the Ōsaka metropolitan area (2013-2017): volunteers cultivating a wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) in the Fukushima district of Ōsaka, and professional producers growing plum, peach and cherry in the Higashino neighborhood in Itami. In order to monitor these emblematic plants to “bloom” (sakaseru), the cultivators practice traditional horticultural characterized by a fastidious shaping of each plant, and they skillfully display the flowers. However, upsetting events such as lack of bloom or the outbreak of a plant disease (specifically a plum virus) put into question a technical control of plants that was taken for granted. Cultivators are led to modify their practices, and also the way they of appreciate the plants. These actions and assessments lead to inferences, allowing to question the status of plants, and how they work. There are two main purposes in this research. On the one hand, an ethnography of Japanese horticulture, focusing on a description of local social life and the technical actions observed during fieldwork. On the other hand, drawing on an "anthropology of life" engaged with the concrete manipulations of living beings that are both organisms and artefacts, the aim is to grasp the conceptions of life and living things, may that be a flower festival or part of a phytosanitary plan

Full textThis research aims to investigate students’ conceptions about the life cycle of flowering plants in both Alsace and Baden-Württemberg, in primary and secondary schools, to detect potential factors influencing student’s conceptions and to identify main learning obstacles. Three elements structured this PhD-thesis: 1) an exploratory investigation with the help of interviews (n=49) ; 2) a context analysis of references in natural sciences and in the socio-cultural domain, of “curricula to teach” through school programmes and manuals, and of “taught curricula” ; 3) a main investigation using questionnaires (n=1388). The instruments included questions to key concepts (seed, flower, fruit) and processes (pollination, fecundation, fructification, formation of seeds, dissemination), which characterize the life cycle of flowering plants. Students were especially asked to order different development stages of plants and to explain their ordering. Different mental models could be derived from the results. Moreover, results were related to those of the context analysis. Conceptualizations of the life cycle of plants depend, amongst others, on those of the sexual reproduction and thus the type of plant (flower, fruit tree). Cultural differences were also identified

Kant’s conception of life is indispensable for understanding Kant’s aesthetics and could illustrate the underlying thread as well as the overall theme of the third Critique. Kant characterizes the principle of life with a power for self-action and self-determination, and this principle could be regarded as a special kind of causality or the third mode of determination. First, in Kant’s theory of the judgment of taste, his conception of life furnishes the judging subject’s transcendental aesthetic operation with a special internal causality, the causality, as Kant depicts, of lingering. Second, for Kant’s thoughts on beautiful art the notion of life, and its cognates as well, also bears those rich and concrete implications that would show how the principle of life, by which the mind is swinging, would manifest a basis for the unity of the self with the nature in the subjective condition of a creative artistic genius. Third, the judgment of the sublime as Kant develops runs into a moment of abruption of life, and by tracing the occurrence of this moment the light could thus be shed on the true condition of the unity, and the boundary as well, that is proper to the peculiar human way of living. By interpreting Kant’s conception and principle of life in such a way, I shall venture to show how the meaning of life, or indeed the meaning behind the peculiar condition of human life, is set out to show itself through the elaboration of the final completion of Kant’s critical enterprise

As You Like It is regarded as one of Shakespeare's mature comedies in that he combines both serious and comic subject matter. Hired by Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival in Vancouver, Canada, I was granted permission by Temple University to submit this production as my thesis. Approaching the play from an objective perspective proved initially difficult due to the vast multitude of research materials and my personal experience of having twice performed in the play. However, by analyzing Shakespeare's text, and approaching the play from the ending first, I was able to discover my unique conceit on directing the play. Set during the English Civil War, I was able to establish the necessary two worlds of the play, a Puritan Court and an English Cavalier Forest of Arden. Through a series of six chapters I explain my process from conception to production, as well, I also evaluate my growth as a director during this artistic achievement. A Director's Script, Costume Sketches, an early Set Design and Reviews support my journey to Opening Night of As You Like It.

Full textOptogenetics is a new method for controlling the neural activity where light is used to activate or silence, with high spatial and temporal resolution, genetically light-sensitized neurons. In optogenetics, a light source such as a LED, targets light-sensitized neurons. In this work, a light-weight wireless animal optogenetic headstage has been designed that allows multi-channel simultaneous real-time optical stimulation and neural recording. This system has two optogenetic stimulation channels and two electrophysiological reading channels. The optogenetic stimulation channels benefit from high-power LEDs (sinking 150 milliamps) with flexible stimulation patterns and the recorded neural data is wirelessly sent to a computer. The dimensions of the headstage are almost 20×20×15 mm3 and it weighs less than 7 grams. This headstage is suitable for tests on small freely-moving rodents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported fully wireless headstage to offer simultaneous multichannel optical stimulation along with multichannel neural recording capability.

Then structural types of spherical parallel mechanisms were enumerated and classification of the mechanisms was presented. An approach based on the analysis of finite displacements sets proprieties was employed to identify singular configurations of mechanisms. Permanent finite singularities induce additional motilities and then new 4-dof and 5-dof over-constrained mechanisms were deduced. Finally, an enumeration of these novel 4-dof and 5-dof parallel mechanisms was obtained

Full textOur research addresses the problem of designing a multi-level supply chain, while taking into consideration the product life cycle. By product life cycle, we mean the succession of the four marketing stages that a product goes through since its introduction to the market and until it will be removed from. All products have a life cycle which can be classified into four discrete stages: introduction, growth, maturity and decline.Depending on the product life cycle phases, and based on a thorough analysis of the different supply chain potential actors, this study aims to establish mathematical models to design an efficient supply chain network. Three main models have been developed in this thesis. The first proposed model aims to design a product-driven supply chain with a minimal total cost, taking into consideration the evaluation of the different potential actors effectiveness, according to several criteria (cost, quality, innovation, quality service, timely delivery, ...).A second model was developed to design of a sustainable supply chain network, taking into account the product life cycle. In this model, three different objectives at the time were considered, namely, an economic objective, an environmental objective and a social objective. In the two previous models, we have assumed that the product has a classical life cycle. However, in the reality this is not always the case. Indeed, some products have very atypical life cycles, whose curves are very different from the classical one. To tackle this problem, in the third part of this thesis, we propose a stochastic model to design a robust supply chain network, taking into account the different product life cycle scenarios

Full textObjectives: To assess the effect of metformin usage and lifestyle modifications in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in achieving conception and live birth. Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients at a southwest reproductive health center was performed. Patients given a diagnosis of PCOS, treated with metformin alone, with at least 12 weeks of outcome data were enrolled. Diagnostic, reproductive history, and baseline endocrine and metabolic data were collected. All available metformin use, menstrual cyclycity, ovulation, pregnancy, pregnancy outcome, and alternative treatment data were captured. Results: A total of 1250 charts were reviewed and 103 patients were enrolled. Pre-treatment, a significant relationship between BMI and HDL, triglycerides/HDL, and fasting glucose (P <0.001, 0.018, 0.016) was noted with leaner patients having better metabolic profiles. The pregnancy, miscarriage, and live birth rates with metformin treatment were 55.3 %, 18.2 %, and 35.0 % respectively. Patients (40/103) that did not conceive with metformin attempted alternative fertility treatment; 55% became pregnant and 30% had a live birth. One third of all patients experienced minor adverse events, primarily gastrointestinal in nature. Logistic regression analyses comparing responders to nonresponders did not identify any baseline patient characteristics useful as significant predictors of success with metformin treatment. Conclusions: For the population under study, metformin use and lifestyle modifications resulted in conception and live birth for as many as 35 % of patients. Contrary to recent publications, it appears that this method of fertility treatment remains a viable option to treat infertility in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.

The present research is about a study of the conception of life in the contemporary days and its theological relevance, having as referential the respect for the life from the poor person. Our research appeared of the ascertainment of the emergency of a new civilization paradigm, capable to rescue the dimensions of the human life and the cosmos, especially of the living beings more weakened and threatened. Opening is necessary for the new questions and the search of answers to the great challenges of our time, from the Christian humanism, participating actively of the cultural debate where the society of the present and the future configures itself. From there, therefore, the importance to search concerning ethics of the life, that implies respect to the new times, necessary and possible, that can introduce the duty where everything is to be able, is an urgent challenge. This contemporary challenge demands to be intent and to be perspicacious to apprehend the necessity to elaborate a theology capable to surpass anthrop and the androcentrism, understanding the human person as being inter and retro- related and responsible for the generations that are for coming. The central idea of our research emerges of the necessity to focus the scientific production and the consequent generation of knowledge in organic way and transdisciplinary, taking account of the Teaching of the Mastership and the truths of the Christian faith. Thus, our research intends pro-actively to contribute so that the option for the poor persons, the promotion of the justice, the defense of the life and of the human rights and the ecology as common house of the humanity are the basic reference of the social interest of the human action in the world. Methodologically we will first look for to assimilate the contemporary understanding of the life, by means of sciences of the life and the new cosmology. Two authors will be very important for our study, since they summarize well this vision. Frijtof Capra, with its understanding of the life as a introretrorelated net; Leonardo Boff, with its vision of Ecology as common house of all, based on an Ethics of the Life that takes account of the shout of the poor persons, the respect for the life from the care, as right and duty of all, in view of a new humanity. Finally, we make a theological reading from the sources of the faith, Writing and ecclesial Tradition, collating these paradigms, searching contact points that can serve as points of reference for our reflection concerning the respect for the life from the poor person and its relevance for the contemporary theological speech.

Full textWith the introduction of different environmental standards like ISO 14001, concerns of manufacturers in railway industry are more and more oriented to the design of green products. One important issue when designing such products is the control of the cost impact and the evaluation of the price which consumers agree to pay for a reduced environmental footprint.Eco-design of railway train presents several challenges for the designer. The first one is the complexity of the life cycle analysis of such components. The second challenge is the necessity of consideration of several environmental impacts in design stage given the number of impacts. Finally, railway components have different models with different granularity which can be used in the process of eco-design. To overcome these problems we propose in this work a method which involves two steps. The first one is to simplify the LCA of the railway train using environmental management software and take the opportunity to build a malleable model to calculate eleven impacts. The second step, is to aggregate these impacts for a single indicator which is considered later as environmental criterion in the eco-design process. In order to investigate optimization tools, the eco-design problem is expressed into an optimization problem. Optimization algorithms are able to solve this problem and to find the optimal set of compromises between environmental criterion and the cost of the railway product. The set of compromises is given as a graph called the Pareto front. In our work the cost is expressed by the mass of the component and some optimization algorithms have been adapted in this work to serve in the process of eco-design

Full textThis PhD dissertation focuses on an innovative end-of-life strategy: repurposing. We define ‘repurposing’ as a manufacturing process through which products nearing their end-of-life are reused in different applications. At the end of their intended use, products are reintegrated into the manufacturing chain and adapted for their next application. We also refer to this strategy as cascading application reuse (CAR). The main purpose of CAR is the preservation of the added-value of such products. This strategy is in line with other reuse strategies such as direct reuse and remanufacturing. The central illustration in our case study addresses lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, which are recycled when the battery’s charging capacity falls below 80%. Extending the component lifespan with a second application, e.g. stationary application, postpones introduction into the waste stream, retaining the added-value from the original manufacturing process. Despite these advantages, examples of product adaptation for CAR remain at a proof-of-concept scale - currently these products and their value chains are not yet designed with strategies supporting reuse. The objective of this research is to provide a clear vision to design teams about repurposing strategies, how to integrate the strategies during the upstream stages of the design process and how to facilitate the corresponding lifecycle assessment. The objective is to support designers during the manufacturing of repurposed products. We make three proposals. The first consists of classifying the characteristics specific to the repurposing strategy according to three axes: the product, the (re)manufacturing process and the business model. Through this framework, we describe the dimensions and characteristics of what the repurposed product offers, which are integral during the design activity. These attributes are the result of a study of the relevant literature coupled with several field investigations. Our second proposal concerns the design process for such products. Indeed, several differences with classical design practices appear: the need for product recovery at the end of use, subsequent applications and needs not fully defined, which affect performance, etc. A design stage for repurposed products must therefore be integrated before subsequent applications in order to optimise redesign solutions. Integrated as early as possible, they aim to facilitate product reuse by taking into account stakeholders, life cycle phases, time aspects and better information management. Finally, a generic framework structuring the carrying out of life cycle analyses of repurposing is proposed. This will simplify the inclusion of their specificities for life cycle assessments (LCA) practitioners. Indeed, the complexity of LCA modelling for cascading applications products requires more rigour and precision than single application products. To support this framework, three recommendations for design teams are made, the objective of which is to better formalise the information from the design process. These recommendations support the formalisation of contextual elements to improve comparison with other studies and the organisation of information for sensitivity analyses. These three proposals are implemented on two battery case studies, during working sessions involving stakeholders representing the complete life cycle: sponsor, design teams, logisticians, recycler, etc

N-benzoyltétrahydro-γ-carbolines, inhibiteurs potentiels mixtes 5-LO / COXs.

Full textNowadays, the number of connected devices requiring access to mobile data is considerably increasing. The arrival of even more connected multimedia objects and the growing demand for more information per device highlighted the limits of the fourth generation of broadband cellular networks (4G). This pushed for the development of new methods, one of which is 5G. The goal is to be able to support the growth of wearable, sensors, or related internet-of-object (IoT) systems. The vision behind 5G is to enable a fully mobile and connected society with a consistent experience. In consequence, there is a fundamental need to achieve a seamless and consistent user experience across time and space.Small cells are the basis of advanced communications standards such as 4G and now, 5G. They exist as a result of using higher frequency bands for RF access in order to support new standards and the increasing demands in bandwidth. 5G use millimeter waves and requires a deployment across indoor and dense urban environment which may prove to be a challenge. This is where 5G will need to include hybrid networking solutions and be able to coexist with other wireless access technologies. Visible light communication (VLC) fits into that mold since visible light corresponds to the band between 400 and 800 THz. The available spectrum is multiple thousand times the size of the RF spectrum and it does not interfere with it. The technique combines illumination with communication at possibly tens of gigabits per second. It has the potential to offer a synergistic pairing with 5G in a hybrid network, offering high speed, no interferences, and more security at the cost of limited coverage and low technological maturity. The goal of this thesis is thus to propose and evaluate an experimental implementation of an indoor multi-user VLC system in order to answer the objectives of Li-Fi setup in the context of a small cell. The first step of this study is a detailed state-of-the-art on VLC in indoor wireless communication and multi-user access. It allows the design of our work to be better explained and to compare our approach with existing works. The second step is an analysis of the principles and hypothesis supporting the indoor multi-user VLC system in the study both on the modulation technique and the multi-user access schemes. The conclusions drawn from theoretical and numerical analysis are used as a basis for the rest of the work. The third step is the experimental setup investigations on the single-user broadcast performances optimization and then on the multi-user performances of the system using various schemes. The total throughput using an off-the-shelf white LED reaches 163 Mb/s with a bit-error rate decreased by a factor of 3.55 thanks to the performance optimization process. This technique has the advantage of increasing the flexibility for a multi-access scenario while not augmenting the complexity as it only optimizes the modulation filter parameters. The multi-user access is obtained for a cell size of 4.56 m² at a distance of 2.15 meter away from the transmitter. The user capacity can reach up to 40 users, or 40.62 Mb/s in a 4-user scenario. It is thus demonstrated that the proposed system could function as a cell at a realistic range, with high data rate and the ability to provide for a large amount of users while limiting the cost of implementation
