The “integration” in mechatronics does not concern only the technology but it implies an integration of design methods as well. There is a need for methods to model the functionality in a homogeneous way independently of implementation technology. Interdisciplinary knowledge, methodology and reference models are pointed out as factors that improve the design work of a mechatronic system, and a solution for the methodology and reference models was proposed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the application of social theory as conceptual methodology in the design of case study research. Rather than simply presenting the elements of design, the focus is on the ways the elements relate and connect to each other, i.e. how a researcher can design each step to facilitate the work that needs to be done in the others. This approach represents design models as constraints between variables, and uses the resulting constraint network to automatically derive computational procedures for performing user-specified tradeoff studies. By decomposing large constraint networks into smaller pieces that can be solved robustly, this approach can solve extremely large systems of non-linear equations present in practical system models.
