Experience with a stimulus changes a person forever ... if not forever, at least for 17 years (Mitchell, 2006). Any process engaged by the brain leaves a trace behind that affects similar future processing. This form of plasticity aims to optimize the brain toward more efficient interaction with stimuli that have been encountered before, adapting the individual to the environment. Similar adaptation manifests itself as faster and more accurate performance to repeated stimuli. Repetition priming is the term used in the literature to describe this kind of facilitation. Benjamin Whorf proposed a relationship between habitual language use and automatic behavior. His work has since led to a great deal of linguistic research, but the field thus far has neglected to explore the relationship between individual lexical items and their connotational effects. This work explores the relationship between exposure to altruism-related words and the subsequent lexical accessibility of aggressive words, then applies that research to real-life situations by exploring the consumer entitlement paradigm with the manipulation of slogans. In two experiments the Weighted Salience Model (WSM) of conceptual combination was examined. Several of the hypotheses set forth in the WSM were evaluated, including the importance of salience of constituent features, differential interpretation strategies based on similarity, an initial reliance on the modifier as opposed to the head, and a context effect of salience reorganization. Results confirmed that the hierarchy of output dominance within constituent features was important in determining features in final combinations. Additionally, similar pairs were defined with property interpreta

People often create novel lexical expressions to efficiently communicate their thoughts to others. Noun-noun phrases, also known as conceptual combinations, serve as an example of these novel expressions. Most of the research on conceptual combination has focused on structural features of the phrases. However, other research has demonstrated that discourse context can also influence how these phrases are interpreted. Across two experiments, we demonstrate that discourse context has a greater influence on how people interpret these combinations than does a structural level manipulation. We also

The natural world provides sensory systems with noisy and ambiguous information, which is often transformed into a more stable categorical percept. This thesis aims to investigate the nature of the neural representations in the visual system that support this transformation. To do so, we will employ a behavioural task that requires participants to average several independent sources of perceptual information. This task allows for the dissociation of two theoretically orthogonal sources of decision uncertainty: the mean distance of the perceptual information from a category boundary and the var

There are many office superstitions about how creativity works, but few are based on psychological science and even fewer have been tested empirically. It is important to test this kind of notion so workplaces can find reliable ways to be innovative, but also because psychology lacks a breadth of literature on how environmental cues interact with people t

Researchers often assume that automatic semantic priming effects found in lexical decision tasks are due to spreading activation at a conceptual knowledge level. Recent research questions this assumption by demonstrating that automatic priming does not occur for word pairs that are semantically related but not normatively associated (e.g., Shelton & Martin, 1992). The present research investigated priming at a conceptual level by manipulating depth of prime processing which forced subjects to access semantic knowledge.
