Abstract:
The violin literature at the concert spirituel of Paris was remarkable for its large variety : from 1725 to 1790 violonists of different nationalities came to present to the parisian public works as duets, sonatas and concertos for violin, an instrument which was present, in solo, in nearly all concerts of concerts spirituel. This one was therefore the witness of the evolution of the violin repertoire during the eighteenth century, evolution which is distinguished by the forsaking of sonata and baroque style on belhalf of concerto and classic, even preromantic style, for exemple in Jean-Baptiste Viotti's works

Carlin, Barbara Dekmar. "Spiritual formation in women: A theoretical examination of Christian spirituality and self-concept." Thesis, Psychological Studies Institute, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/71587.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reviewed literature exploring the factors contributing to spirituality and their effects on the development of self-concept in girls and women. Self-esteem, self-concept, and self-image, although closely related, were distinct constituents of mental health. Although religiousness and spirituality appeared to describe different concepts, they also were not fully independent. Christian spiritual formation was identified by the practice of spiritual disciplines and acts of faith with others. Spiritual and religious involvement were consistently and positively related to health and inversely related to disorders. However, there was inadequate conceptualization of Christian spirituality in the literature as an explanation effecting self-concept. Review of the evidence indicated that continued research is needed regarding the integration of spiritual disciplines as predictors for a distinct spiritual formation in women. Further research may provide evidence that healthy self-concept in women increases as a function of Christian spiritual formation.

Full text
Abstract:
When Hubert Le Blanc published his Défence de la basse de viole in 1741, the cello had already established itself as a solo instrument in Parisian musical life. Several cellists, both French and foreign, had performed to acclaim at the Concert Spirituel, and the instrument had a rapidly expanding repertoire of published solo sonatas by French composers. Among the most significant of the early French cellist-composers were Jean Barrière (1707-47), François Martin (c. 1727-c. 1757), Jean-Baptiste Masse (c. 1700-1757), and Martin Berteau (1708/9-1771). Their cello sonatas are innovative, experimental, often highly virtuosic, and, in spite of unashamedly Italianate traits, tinged with a uniquely French hue. Yet notwithstanding its repertoire and the skill of its performers, this generation of French cellist-composers has remained undervalued and underexplored. To a large extent, this neglect has arisen because a succeeding generation of French cellists of the late eighteenth century - the Duport brothers, Jean-Pierre (1741-1818) and Jean-Louis (1749-1819), the Janson brothers, Jean-Baptiste-Aimé (1742-1823) and Louis-Auguste-Joseph (1749-1815), and Jean-Baptiste Bréval (1753-1823) - are widely acknowledged as the creators of the modern school of cello playing. This dissertation focuses exclusively on the early French cello school. It seeks to examine the rise of the solo cello in France within its socio- cultural and historical context; to provide biographies of those com- prising the early French cello school; to explore the repertoire with particular emphasis on the growth of technique and idiom, detailing features that may be described as uniquely French, and to assert the importance of and gain recognition for this school, not as a forerunner of the so-called Duport school but as an entity in itself.

This dissertation presents a neologism from the perspective of the science of religion, spiritual intelligence. Spiritual intelligence suggests it may be one of various types of intelligence and that can be built regardless of the IQ level. Spiritual intelligence needs a deepening of self-integration of the inner life of mind and spirit with the outer life of work in the world, both personal and professional, showing that they are not different behaviors. It can be cultivated through spiritual practices and the apex is the express spiritual maturity through true perception (wisdom and meanings) before the choices. What itself contributes to the insight in making assertive choices that contribute to their own well-being and his neighbor. Spiritual intelligence can be developed everywhere, inside and outside of religious traditions regardless of belief, in the workplace and living in society

Abstract:
The subject for this thesis project is human agency, or motivation to desist from crime, as a turning point in criminal careers. Human agency will be defined as motivation to make pro-social decisions to achieve one’s goals over the lifecourse, based on an overall belief that crime is not a valuable action alternative. Human agency or motivation will be assessed through concepts of positive criminology, which emphasize positive experiences and processes that are thought to be factors for desistance. The concepts for this thesis are regarding the development of a positive self-identity and meaning of life. The aim of this paper is to discover different thought processes that can contribute and get an understanding on how human agency can appear and be conceived, rather than to measure different factors quantitively. This question will be studied through semi-structured interviewing with around ten individuals that have previously been convicted and that have had active periods of their lives where crime was a big part. It will be a qualitative project, with a phenomenological approach. The method for analysis will be Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which is a method for assessing individual stories and meanings as a part of the identities of the interviewees. The narratives derived from the interviews are categorized by the three main themes social-, self- and spiritual integration. The findings from the paper’s interviews suggest a structure which may be useful for future research on criminal careers and the reasons for why people stop committing crime. An agency towards desistance alongside social structures of the everyday life are theorized to be central for criminal careers to end.

Stone, Jeffrey Carroll II. "A Legacy of Hope in the Concert Spirituals of Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882?1943) and William Dawson (1899?1990)." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10365/25965.

Abstract:
When the careers of the composers Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) and William Levi Dawson (1899-1990) began, the United States was a racially-divided society. Despite this division, both composers held a firm belief in the potential of spirituals to bring people together. Racial segregation severely limited the civil rights of people of color; however, Dett and Dawson were fueled by the hope for spirituals to bridge the racial divide in America. Both composers desired to achieve racial equality through their music. I argue that these aspirations are embodied within their concert spirituals. This disquisition examines the legacies of Dett and Dawson for the role of ?hope? in their concert spirituals. The phrase ?legacy of hope? frames a distinct perspective of Dett?s and Dawson?s aspirations for the function of spirituals in American music. I examined their choral music and provided evidence of their hope for concert spirituals. In addition, I draw on scholarly books, essays, interviews, and dissertations to consider Dett?s and Dawson?s legacy of hope within the context of their social environment. Historically, spirituals share an intimate bond to the social environment of the United States. The capacity of spirituals to provide hope appears frequently in the United States during periods of social change. To further strengthen my arguments for Dett?s and Dawson?s legacy of hope, my study relates the concept of hope to the performance of spirituals. The study is limited to the start of the concert tradition of spiritual in the late nineteenth century. Hope proves to be an inherent trait of spirituals throughout its history. As choral conductors, we can also contribute to the legacy of hope when we further our understanding of the value and meaning of spirituals. The more ways the conductor can foster and integrate a respect for spirituals into rehearsals and performances, the greater is the conductor?s contribution to the legacy of hope. Spirituals provide the choral conductor an avenue to explore meaningful social objectives for choral ensembles. The legacy of hope was significant for the generation of Dett and Dawson and it is still relevant for ours.

Leavey, Gerard Francis. "How do Christian, Jewish and Muslim clergy resolve medical and spiritual concepts of madness in their pastoral care?" Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2005. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1445661/.

Abstract:
Aim: The purpose of this research is an attempt to examine the 'black box' of religious leaders' contact with people with mental health problems in the community. Background: In the UK and elsewhere there is a growing recognition that people in psychiatric distress will often seek help from religious leaders, in addition to or in place of, consultation with medical or psychiatric care. However, we know very little about how clergy respond to people with mental health problems. If religious organisations are to play a greater role in the care of people with mental health problems, this will require a greater understanding of how religious leaders from diverse faiths and ethnic communities conceptualise and manage mental illness. Are the beliefs of clergy on mental illness and their attitudes towards the mentally ill, compatible with western psychiatric classification Are their beliefs about mental illness likely to assist or hinder people with psychiatric problems in obtaining appropriate care Should clergy play a role in mental health care at all Method: In this qualitative study using in-depth interviews I explored these questions with 32 practising clergy in the UK from a range of different Christian, Muslim and Jewish faith organisations and ethnic backgrounds. Results: In general, most clergy regardless of ethnic or religious background declare a broad support for medical and psychiatric intervention. For most clergy psychiatric intervention is compatible with religious belief. However, various clergy believe that psychiatric practice and knowledge is limited in that it fails to take account of the spiritual welfare of the individual. In addition, a number of clergy argue that western, secularist paradigms wrongly exclude the existence of supernatural phenomena in the development or expression of mental illnesses. Most lack any formal training and find dealing with mental distress perplexing and challenging. Some of the clergy's beliefs about mental illness and their attitudes towards the mentally ill are complex and often contentious the role of pastoral care in contemporary Britain and the implications of the results of this study are discussed.

THESIS_FHH_SSE_SEL_Pearce_M.xml, 1994. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/315.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is the result of an inquiry into the experiences of a group of people engaged in a Buddhist inspired creative meditation program, the main practice of which is the recognition and honouring of the spiritual dimensions, the divinity of self and others. The study employed a heuristic process of examining 'inner world' experiences. The inquiry was collaborative in the sense that its findings were not those of one person alone, but were a compilation of the results of interactions within the group. The inquiry was based on the hypothesis that creative meditation can facilitate changes in a person's perception of self and the external world. The principal aim was to explore into that possibility and investigate the group members' thoughts and feelings as to the main function, significance and eventual outcome of their practice. The investigation seemed to show that for the core group participants there were changes in self-understanding involving more self-acceptance. Changes in attitudes to relationships of various kinds also took place and these also seemed to involve the development of a greater degree of acceptance. With some participants the association of the practice with favourable co-incidence was an interesting but inexplicable feature. For some there was an identification of mind sets which seemed to have a bearing on the quality of meditation experience and its outcomes. The title of the study refers to the manner in which the meditations were often generated. A mandala, a symbolic picture, was designed by each participant and the features of this were imagined to move, sometimes dancing, through the meditations which followed. The second sub-title refers to an integral feature of the practice which was an attempt to arouse a sense of the wonderful as a quality of the people who were imagined to appear in the meditations.

Van, Zyl Frederick William James. "The contribution of William Gurnall (1616-1679) to the puritan concept of spiritual combat, with special emphasis on the role of faith." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003916.

Full text
Abstract:
The Central figure in this thesis is William Gurnall M.A. (Cambridge) who lived from 1616 to 1679. He was the Rector of the Lavenham Parish church for 35 years, 1644/45-1679. He was one of the few Puritans who remained in the Established Church after the 1662 Act of Uniformity had been promulgated. His 'The Christian in Complete Armour' is one of the greatest practical-pastoral works to come from the pen of any Puritan. It is firmly based on Calvinistic theological principles. While holding common beliefs in many areas, Gurnall nevertheless was at odds with his fellow Puritans over certain crucial issues that directly affected his attitude to the Puritan revolution. His analysis of the person, being, nature, wiles, strategies and weapons of the Christian's great enemy and description of the Christian's resources such as the role of the shield of faith in its multiple uses, which constitute an important contribution to pastoral theory and practice are shown to arise out of Gurnall's theological stance, his own personal history, the history of East Anglia and of Lavenham in particular; his reflections on the 'Days of Great Confusions' and his deep concern for the breakdown in orderly society and the decline of genuine piety in the church. Basically we will concentrate on three issues: First. The real nature and locus of the Christian's spiritual warfare. Second. -- The means used for his investigation, namely, an examination of the person, power, methods and wiles of the Christian's great enemy and the vital role of the shield of faith. -- Third. His conclusions.

Abstract:
Encontrar as respostas certas; 3. Casos Modelo; 4. Casos Contrários; 5. Casos Relacionados; 6. Casos de Difícil Diagnóstico; 7. Casos Inventados; 8. O Contexto Social; 9. Anseios Basilares; 10.
This study aimed to analyze the concept of spirituality from Human Caring Theory by Jean Watson and Discuss the relationship between Experiences of Consciousness (Spiritual), in the interaction field called by theorist of \'Present Moment, \'Phenomenological Field\' and \'Actual Caring Occasion. Method: Wilsons concept clarification was used. The following steps were followed: 1. Isolate questions of concept 2. Find the right answers; 3.Model Case 4. Contrary Cases 5. Related Cases 6. Borderline 7. Invented Cases 8. Social Context 9. Underlying anxiety 10. Practical Results and 11. Results in language. The guiding questions for analysis were: a) What is the nature of Spirituality in Caring? b) Spirituality differs from materiality in relations of care, since the first would require different levels of interaction for a more subtle dimension could be accessed\'. Methodological steps performed this study concluded that: the Theory of Human Caring Spirituality is conceived as the World of Spirit, experienced through a phenomenological field of interaction between two beings characterized by the occurrence of experiences of consciousness (or spirit). In Human Care Theory were the background for Spirituality: Soul/Spirit, characterized by: Immortality, Immateriality, Essence, Self Knowledge, Consciousness, and Creative Energy, Individuality, set by Soul /Spirit and Transcendence physical, mental and emotional, and finally, Experiences of Consciousness, indicated by: Intuition, Experience Spiritual/ Supernatural / Metaphysical / Mystical. The attributes found to access the spiritual dimension were the ten Clinical Caritas Process. It was observed that the Patient Process-Interactional Professional is directed from the triad: Mind-Body-Spirit where the outcomes are related to the occurrence of Care Real Deal, the perceived connection from Life Stories, dilatation of Perception Field phenomenal, breaks in the space-time, culminating in transpersonal Process and Human Care, evidenced by the Deep Contact with the Other and I can, Use of Language Relevant to describe the experience and, finally, Systematization Plan of Care Data Obtained from Experience

Abstract:

Faull, Kieren. "Health and the Spiritual Self: Development and Application of a Theory and Measure of the Process of Healthy Change." The University of Waikato, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2651.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall goal of the thesis was to investigate the nature of the healthy human self and the process of achieving health. This was undertaken by reviewing established self-theory and presenting a summary of each theory and its position with regard to self-composition, self-agency and the nature of the healthy self. An inclusive self-theory was then developed, congruent with reviewed literature, which positioned spirituality as the essential core of self. From the foundational Spiritual Theory of Self and the findings of the first study in this thesis, the Health Change Process Theory was developed to explain and predict how people achieve sustainable health. Three subsequent studies resulted in the construction and testing of a quantitative measure which enabled scientific investigation of the nature of the healthy self and the process of achieving health. Method The methodology of the four studies in this thesis was based on the instrumental approach which posits that, while there are procedural differences between qualitative and quantitative methodologies, philosophically speaking, there is no fundamental difference as they are both equally applicable and valuable. Consequently, the methodology judged to be the most appropriate instrument to investigate each study's topic of inquiry was chosen rather than allegiance to either qualitative or quantitative methodology. The first study was qualitative, as it investigated the definition of health and the process by which it was achieved from the perspective of 30 people with chronic musculoskeletal impairments. The findings from this study provided the theoretical basis for the three subsequent questionnaire development and validation studies. The second study used qualitative methodology with 59 participants to identify participant-generated items used in a new quantitative holistic health questionnaire and then employed quantitative methods to perform preliminary tests of the reliability and validity of this measure. The third study used quantitative methods with 233 participants to evaluate more robustly the reliability, content and concurrent validity of the original developmental measure and another, behaviourally-orientated assessment instrument, which used the identical item content but re-framed in the past tense. The fourth study employed qualitative and quantitative methods with 205 participants to evaluate the clinical validity of the scale found to possess reliability and validity in the previous investigation. Results The critical review of self-theory concluded with the development of the Spiritual Theory of Self. The initial study supported this theory as a robust explanation and predictor of the determinants of a healthy self. Furthermore, the findings of this study and a review of relevant literature concluded with the development of a Health Change Process Theory, which was based on the Spiritual Theory of Self. The Health Change Process Theory explains and predicts the process by which a healthy self develops. The subsequent questionnaire development and validation studies sought to provide a quantitative holistic assessment tool, congruent with the Health Change Process Theory, and found the 28-item QE Health Scale (QEHS) to be a reliable and valid measure of holistic health. These results also demonstrated that the Health Change Process Theory and the underpinning Spiritual Theory of Self were robust. With regard to clinical application, the QEHS was found to aid assessment, therapeutic intervention, a client-centred holistic approach to healthcare and evidenced-based practice. The Patient Profile, derived from QEHS responses, provided a tool that enabled theory to be applied to practice by identifying the key indicator personal attributes determining holistic health status. Conclusion The research results demonstrated that the Spiritual Theory of Self and the Health Change Process Theory provide valid explanations of the constructs that enable people with musculoskeletal disorders to remain otherwise healthy with such conditions. Furthermore, the relationship between the findings and established self-theories suggest that the Spiritual Theory of Self and the Health Change Process Theory may advance knowledge of the predictors and interventions that enable all people to undertake a health-enhancing process of change when confronted with adversity. The QEHS and associated Patient Profile were found to be reliable and valid tools that facilitated assessment and enhancement of the holistic health status for people with musculoskeletal impairments. These tools identified barriers to achievement of holistic health, predicted by the Health Change Process Theory; facilitated the therapeutic process through a focus on issues meaningful to those receiving healthcare; aided treatment decision making; and enabled quantitative evidence-based evaluation of the efficacy of interventions. Moreover, the overall results have advanced psychological knowledge with implications for all fields of psychology involved in the study of people. The evidence of the research undertaken provides a basis for promoting knowledge and research of chronic healthcare delivery and a spiritually based conception of self and health. The QEHS and associated theories provide a tool and basis for investigations where people are experiencing traumatic, irreversible crises. However, the initial aims of further research should be to refine the QEHS and the associated Patient Profile to enable the use of theory and the QEHS across a diverse range of research populations and to investigate the applicability of these to facilitate the maintenance or achievement of a healthy self.

Abstract:
The “spiritual” appears today as a hypothecated concept leading to a frequent underuse of the expression. To an extent, the equivocal derives from the systematics granted by the German Idealism metaphysics, in which the spiritual calls for human perfecting as its own content, and of which the axiological object is identified as the model of Reason as entelechy. Observing at the determining aspect of such model for later Philosophy, the conceptualization of the “spiritual” disavows part of its history, which undergoes through the development of cultural and religious traditions. The case of Kandinsky works here as a node to which philosophical implications of both, German Idealism and Russian religious Idealism, arrive, therefore the post-kantian aesthetical gets framed by the Christian religious influence over his personality. A phaenomenological-hermeneutical analysis of the case succeeds informing a concept of das Geistige that calls that notion of “spiritual” which is relative to the numinous.

Theme of this project is new building proposal of The Sword of the Holy Spirit church and spiritual center, located in Brno-Líšeň. This part of the Brno is 6 km northeast away from the city center. This proposal include building or construction of the church with rectory. Main goal was to create a dignified place for worship and also for meetings of parish comunity. This place should to point out on spiritual importance of whole building with its architecture, construction engineering, dispositions and artistic solution. The church is connected with congregation of the Selesians of Don Bosca in Líšeň, whose main goal is education of youth in the spirit of Christian traditions. One of the requirements was to create modern church not only for the comunity of Selesians, but also for the general public. The church which will benefit its surroundings and gives new life into this place. Architectural solution of church is trying to follow an idea of proposal based not only from character of the sacral building, but also from biblical motives. The church should remind hug of the God, who is in love to the people. The ring describes one of the main principles of Selesians – looking for everything what connects people, education in faith, comunity. Abstract:
The design of the Church “Seslání Ducha Svatého” with the spiritual center in Líšeň, Brno answers the question: "How should the contemporary church look like?" Analysis of the site, awareness of the character and requirements of today's time, historical and cultural continuity and liturgical changes of the last century gave rise to 7 points of the architecture of the new church. This program describes the new liturgy, defines the form of the subordinate community of believers, characterizes the work with the material envelope of the inner space, establishes the relation between the horizontal and the vertical and the curved and rectangular, explains the theme of orientation and work with the interior. The final urban and architectural solution is based on these assumptions. The spiritual center, consisting of a multifunctional hall, a classroom, a club-room, a rectory, a cafeteria with a library, and underground garages with technology, is geometrically rigid, layered and precisely fitted, while church is completely different in its shape and scale, indicating functional and sacral differences. The abstract form of the church refers to the inviolability of God. The interior of the Church is a place of silence, a pure and noble space, formed by higher order principles. Another important way of expression becomes light as the creator of the spiritual space. An important part of the proposal is also the principle of organizing a church with a spiritual center around the inner square opened to the south by a wide entrance staircase.

Abstract:
This thesis, inter-disciplinary in nature and orientation, seeks to assess the extent to which the spiritual/interior experiences arising from specific examples of human physical activity can be interpreted/clarified through the use of the concept of embodiment (informed and enriched by insights arising from religious studies) as an interpretive key. Diversity of attitudes to the body, evident in theoretical and practical variations, necessitates a clear definition of the particular understanding of embodiment which underpins this study, an indication of how embodiment when used as a 'key' might assist in the interpretation of the experiences to be investigated, and an explanation of the process by which the critical question was identified and developed. In order to provide the methodological framework, Chapter 1 clarifies the synthesis of personal experience, practical knowledge and theoretical understandings which underpin and authenticate a research method characterised by a process of journeying 'back and forth' between key 'pieces' of evidence. In the second chapter of the study the experience arising from human physical activity is discussed and possible modes of interpretation considered. Embodiment as a key for this experience is examined in relation to sport (Chapter 3). Chapter 4 is a survey of understandings of embodiment, drawn largely from religious sources. Thereafter, in Chapter 5, sacred dance will be considered. In Chapter 6, I refer to circumstances, situations and experiences which may impede and distort the recognition and celebration of the fact of our embodiment as experienced in and through our bodies. Findings support the use of embodiment as a viable 'key' for experiences arising from certain types of human physical activity. Fully celebrated and assessed anew for different contexts, embodiment may prove to be a predominant motif of our time, redeeming and enriching our sense of what it means to be in our bodies.

Abstract Art Expression of Spiritual Image and Humane Concern The focus of art expression is: what is art to express, and how to express? The former question is related to the theme and content of art, while the latter is related to its expressive form, style, media, and skills. Nevertheless, whether the theme and content, or the style and form of art expression, they are both associated with the soul image of the creator. The soul consists not only of the entire nerve system, but also of the whole universe. As the soul extends infinitely, it can sense any matter and objects in any space and time. Image is, however, the vision generated from inner experience; it is an vision entity which is a product through instantaneous combination of consciousness and sub consciousness. Soul image is the consciousness, sub consciousness, or value orientation made up of our life, experience, memory, personality…etc. Hence, soul image can be deemed as the inexhaustible fountain of inspiration for art expression. From the appeal of “emancipation of the soul” at the end of eighteenth century to the end of the calamity of two world wars, human beings started to re-contemplate the positioning of technological sense and soul intuition. Through introspection and criticism, the researcher perceives that only by grace of human reflection and concern, and elevating the quality of soul, can we avoid the objectification and alienation resulted from industrialization and digitalization. Human concern refers to the concern on “human”, with emphasis on the liberation of soul or the emancipation of spirit, which is precisely the self-awareness of human nature that humanists attempted to rebuild ever since ancient time. Through theory development and creation introspection, the researcher determines that the content of personal soul image is centralized in nature, environment, society, and culture, as well as in the images of animals, plants, and natural environment; it also encompasses the concern on current social issues, which reveals the researcher’s care for human nature. Therefore, the gist of this research is human nature set on humane concern, with its style focused on expressiveness, and its purpose is to, by employing rich images deep in the soul to exhibit the researcher’s concern on nature, environment, society, and culture. Accordingly, the researcher entitled the ideal of the creation as “the art expression of soul image and human concern”, by which gradual discussion of theory and realization of creation shall be conducted. In order to present the ideal of the creation, in terms of its realization, the creator has accomplished 21 works regarding three layers of aspects: “the respect for life”, “the criticism on society”, and “the concern on ecology”. Through the researching process of this creation, the researcher has gained much precious experience, touching elements, and inspiration; thus acquired further acknowledgement on the content and correlation among art expression, soul image, and human concern. Stated below are with 7 key points of this research: 1.Art derives from earnest concern and touching essence: beauty emerges from touching essence, which arises from the sincerity and care of the soul. 2.Art is the pursuit of inner life: image is equipped with inner nature, and art with inner life. 3.Art is the integration of human spirits: art should express human spirit, which is functional of adjusting the unbalance in reason and sensibility, and of regulating the divergence of self from tradition. 4.Resonance can be inspired by the incorporation of absolute value into epochal value: art plays an essential role in an epoch, and is capable of inspiring general spiritual resonance. 5.Soul image can be disclosed with the fusion of simultaneity and automation: in art works, the fusion of skills like images-overlap, space-time interlacing, and automation…etc, is capable of revealing deep hidden soul images. 6.Significance can be transformed through the interaction between perceptions and concepts: art is the media of expression and communication, through which perceptive images and theme concepts would be mutually affected, while creators and appreciators interact reciprocally to form new significance of the work. 7.Art style can be established by accentuating cultural features: art content initiates from self-awareness in human nature, with its expressive form originating from soul image. To build up unique style, regional and cultural traits must be highlighted.

Abstract:

In this paper we aim to clarify the issue of spiritual care in the context of mental health nursing. Background. The concept of spirituality in nursing has received a great deal of attention in recent years. However, despite many articles addressed to the issue, spiritual care remains poorly understood amongst nursing professionals and, as a result, spiritual needs are often neglected within the context of health care. Methods. A series of focus groups was conducted to obtain the views of service users, carers and mental health nursing professionals about the concept of spirituality and the provision of spiritual care in mental health nursing. Results. According to the views expressed in our focus groups, spiritual care relates to the acknowledgement of a person¿s sense of meaning and purpose to life which may, or may not, be expressed through formal religious beliefs and practices. The concept of spiritual care was also associated with the quality of interpersonal care in terms of the expression of love and compassion towards patients. Concerns were expressed that the ethos of mental health nursing and the atmosphere of care provision were becoming less personal, with increasing emphasis on the `mechanics of nursing¿. Conclusions. The perceived failure of service providers to attend adequately to this component of care may be symptomatic of a medical culture in which the more readily observable and measurable elements in care practice have assumed a prominence over the more subjective, deeply personal components. In order for staff to acknowledge these issues it is argued that a more holistic approach to care should be adopted, which would entail multidisciplinary education in spiritual care.

Abstract:

The main purpose of this study is to explore ways to care for dying patients. The emphasis is on Christian and Buddhist methods. The study explores ways in which these methods can be integrated into hospital treatment so as to improve the experience of the dying person and preserve his/her dignity in the face of death. The research paper begins by exploring Christian and Buddhist notions of life and death and proceeds by integrating the two into a combined theory that is then applied to my experience as a volunteer on a hospital ward. The purpose of the real-life application is to guide dying patients toward a mindset that will help them prepare for death and alleviate both fear and physical pain. Though this study deals with two distinct religions, it transcends a mere study of religion. Through it, I hope to show how a universal principle from both religions – namely love – can ultimately build inner peace and help patients cope with the final stage of their lives. The point is not to convert patients to either religion but to comfort them. The study aims to help the public understand how spirituality in patient care is not a matter of religious preaching or religious conversion. Rather it is a matter of elevating the patient through love to a higher spiritual state in preparation for death, regardless of spiritual inclination. The approach not only helps the patient, but can ultimately help the volunteer increase his or her own spiritual understanding and practice of compassion and work toward inner peace.

Abstract:
Chance events began with the Big Bang and influenced all subsequent evolutionary processes, including the genesis and evolution of biological life. The complex and versatile human brain has come to dominate the environment. Self-awareness generated the idea of spiritual identity and survival beyond death. The assumption of demi-god status gave sanctity and dignity to humans, a moral separation that justified the exploitation of other animals. But evolution has a common origin, fleshed out in the biological similarities of all mammals, including humans. Neurological and biochemical correlates suggest the omnipresence of consciousness and self-consciousness at levels that vary according to nervous system complexity. Accepting a more inclusive morality does not diminish the value of human life. It acknowledges their power to adapt to changing conditions. Human survival depends on change and human lives can only benefit from a more inclusive worldview that considers the welfare of all sentient beings and the sustainability of a shared environment.

National consciousness can be regarded as the most important essence in the music of Dvořák, besides strong national consciousness, numerous visit to Great Britain and Russia and teaching in National Conservatary of Music in America make his music full of much nationality and exoticism. “Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra, in B minor, Op.104” was made, combined the melody of African-American spirituals and music rhythm of Bohemia dances when being in America, it is still the outstanding figure in similar music for him to create one out so far.

Duquette, Jonathan. "Towards a philosophical reconstruction of the dialogue between modern physics and Advaita Vedanta : an inquiry into the concepts of akasa, vacuum and reality." Thèse, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/4866.

Full text
Abstract:
Toward the end of the 19th century, the Hindu monk and reformer Swami Vivekananda claimed that modern science was inevitably converging towards Advaita Vedanta, an important philosophico-religious system in Hinduism. In the decades that followed, in the midst of the revolution occasioned by the emergence of Einstein's relativity and quantum physics, a growing number of authors claimed to discover striking "parallels" between Advaita Vedanta and modern physics. Such claims of convergence have continued to the present day, especially in relation to quantum physics. In this dissertation, an attempt is made to critically examine such claims by engaging a detailed comparative analysis of two concepts: akasa in Advaita Vedanta and vacuum in quantum physics. What is examined is the claim that both concepts would refer to the same reality — an enduring, subtle and all-pervading physical substratum out of which the constituents of the world come into existence and to which they ultimately return. Based on this study, the dissertation argues that comparisons relying on conceptual affinities alone generally fall short of establishing a productive dialogue between Advaita Vedanta and modern physics. Another approach is to bring into focus the epistemological limits respectively encountered by these systems when attempting to define the content of "reality-in-itself" or "ultimate reality." Emphasis is given to epistemology and the problem of reality in Advaita Vedanta, and scientific realism and philosophical implications of nonseparability in quantum physics.

Badenberg, Robert 1961. "Sickness and healing : a case study on the dialectic of culture and personality." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18027.

Full text
Abstract:
Sickness and healing expenence is universal, but the context in which both are perceived and dealt with is particular. Culture and the individual constitute the universal context. The social structures, values, beliefs, the symbol system of a culture and the tendency of the individual to act upon his existence within cultural parameters, inform the particular context. The relationship that exists between culture and the individual is best described as dialectic. The concept of dialect is the theoretical tool to analytically show how this relationship works out in real life. At the base of this relationship operates conflict. Sickness, or permanent ill health since early childhood as shown in an in-depth case study, triggers conflict on at least two levels: the personal-psychological and the socio cultural level. To effectively deal with sickness and the inner conflicts caused by it, is to channel the motivation to resolve them by way of employing a symbolic idiom, a cultural symbol that attains personal meaning. G. Chewe P. of Bemba ethnicity, the main actor of this thesis, demonstrates how his life experience of sickness made various symbols become operational, how he filled them with personal meaning, and that there was no hiatus between the public and private domain. Healing requires more than medical aid. Cultural symbols that become personal symbols are often tied into religious experience of some kind. Individuals who successfully employ personal symbols eventually achieve healing because the symbolic idiom helps them to resolve intrapsychic conflict. Missiology cannot escape from two realities: culture and the individual. If anything, missiology must be interested in culture and the individual. Missiology, in the role of aide-de-camps of the Christian Mission, shows the history of how individuals connect to God, and how God transforms them in their cultural environment. To be able to achieve both goals, the issues of context and conflict must be addressed. This thesis seeks to account for the dialectic between culture and the individual, how context and conflict shaped the person and the Christian G. Chewe P. of Bemba ethnicity, and how he acted upon this context to resolve his travail.

Object of research of this thesis is the specific behaviour of seriously ill and dying humans coping with their impending death and being members of a society having an ambivalent attitude towards death. People's different and individual ways of coping cannot always be sufficiently explained by the current use of phasing models. In this context the "Coping Model" by Richard S. Lazarus and his stress research group seems to be helpful in understanding dying humans. In how far this comprehension model from a secular branch of research can be supportive of pastoral counselling is the objective of this thesis. Counselling dialogues with different persons who show a wide range of coping form the basis of this research. The challenge of this paper was to observe and sense humans in their death experiences from a broader point of view in order to identify as much as possible kinds of impulses crucial to their coping behaviour. Analysing the behaviour of dying humans led to new perspectives on spiritual guidance. Tantamountly, this has its consequences for spiritual dealing with dying humans. The comprehension of the biblical Christian idea of man and a detailed knowledge of coping research can, by all means, be interactive and thus show positive results as both respond to a person's individuality and support them in their own ways of approach to life and death. Finally, this leads to an intensive dialogue between patient and pastor who can have the courage and the confidence in letting the person find his own way of coping. The different kinds of approach of the coping model research offer far-reaching impulses to various pastoral questions going even beyond terminal care.

Fortuin, Philene. "Re-performing trauma making use of outsider witnessing : a pastoral narrative approach." Diss., 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/7040.

Full text
Abstract:
The study focuses on women’s experiences of abuse resulting in trauma. This research performance was conducted within a practical theology framework guided by a de-centred participatory action research process. The study was conducted against a postmodern background and was informed by social construction discourse. Its aim was to explore whether and how narrative pastoral counselling using outsider witnessing could be helpful in finding new preferred ways of living, resulting in healing, resilience and hope for women who had experienced abuse and trauma. The outsider witness group explored practical ways of listening, observing and responding to the pain and suffering of others, resulting in a new performance of the self as valuable, competent, and enabling those who are witnessed to believe that they are survivors that have lived through and beyond the limited life span of abuse and trauma. The research report ends with a play, New Seasons, which is to be performed in front of live audiences in the course of 2012.

Kulcsar, Benjamin. "Der erlebnisorientierte geistliche Lebensstil als Herausforderung fur den Gemeindeaufbau in der Postmoderne : empirische Untersuchung der Auswirkungen der Church Growth Movement auf den Gemeindeaufbau in Deutschland und in der Schweiz." Abstract:
Text in German
The present research investigates the justification of an experience-orientated alignment of a spiritual lifestyle as a challenge for churchbuilding in postmodernity. The increasing experience-orientated behaviour in post-modern society did not stop at the gates of the churches in Germany and Switzerland. The results require, from those persons responsible in the congregations and churches, new deliberation and reflection with regard to the present practice of the promotion and development of church growth. When one looks at this process, it becomes apparent, that above all the stimuli from the Church Growth Movement (CGM), especially the church models of the Willow Creek Community Church (WCCC) and the Saddleback Valley Community Church (SVCC) gained huge attention in Germany and Switzerland. On the one hand the church models are emulated with great enthusiasm, on the other hand they are strongly criticised for their relationship with and handling of experience-orientated behaviour. The present research empirically examines and investigates the communalities and differences regarding the experience-orientated alignment of the spiritual lifestyle of the faithful believers from partner churches of the Willow Creek Community Church and non-partner churches. It was also examined and investigated to what degree socio-structural factors contributed to, particularly the congregational environment, with regards to the creation of the experience-orientated spiritual life style, and in how far an interaction exists between the various components of the spiritual lifestyle. The research findings facilitate an empirical-theological evaluation and assessment of the models of churchbuilding of the CGM and the development of an approach to churchbuilding in postmodernity. It is therefore possible to react to the increasing experience-orientation of the societal as a challenge in the churchbuilding.

Abstract:
Music Culture of the Elisabethan Convent in Prague Jakub Michl Abstract The Sisters of Saint Elizabeth (Elizabethan Nuns) were a spiritual order primarily focused on administering healthcare. Therefore, music was never the main focus of the order's activities, as it often was in others, particularly educational orders. However, thanks to the uninterrupted historical continuity of the Prague convent, which was exempted from the restrictions of Joseph II's era, many sources illustrating the convent music culture were preserved, including an extensive collection of music. The dissertation aims to describe this music culture in the context of the order structure and its personal hierarchy, as part of the city of Prague and its civic institutions, and in its everyday life and characteristics such as enclosure, hospital service and recreational activities. Music in convents was always tightly bound to liturgy. In the case of the Elizabethan order, significant music production was focused on the order's main liturgical feasts such as S. Elizabeth, S. Francis of Assisi, Porciuncula, Christmas, Epiphany, Easter and also memorial services for deceased patrons of the convent. The convent cooperated with many lay musicians and composers such as F. X. Brixi, Z. V. Suchý, F. X. Labler, J. N. Bayer, among others. At the...
