Abstract:
Amidst the wide range of events staged as part of Glasgow's 2014 Cultural Programme in celebration of the Commonwealth Games, the New Music Biennial Showcase occupied the closing weekend of the Games. Hosted at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 1 and 2 August, it made use of three separate performances spaces: the main hall, the newly redeveloped Strathclyde Suite and the more intimate brand new City of Music Studio. As at its London partner event, which took place between 4 and 6 July at the Southbank Centre, audiences were provided with an opportunity to hear 20 new commissions from a diverse selection of composers from across Britain, each of which had already been performed across the country in a variety of locations, ranging from skate parks to concert halls.

The Advanced Light Source, in concert with COMPRES, supports a superconducting bending magnet beamline devoted to extreme conditions diffraction. This facility, beamline 12.2.2, is aimed at the geoscience community, but is available to any who desire high pressures, high temperatures and hard X-rays. The latest development has been integrating single crystal x-ray diffraction for diamond anvil cells into the existing suite of high pressure powder diffraction and amorphous scattering techniques. Multiple heating techniques are available to the user, as well as multiple detectors, which can be chosen to best suit the sample. The current staff are dedicated to improving the user friendliness of the beamline; a difficult experiment need not to be further complicated by a difficult beamline. Beamline infrastructure, including recent advances and improvements, will be discussed.

Abstract:
The near-globally distributed ecto-parasitic mite of the Apis mellifera honeybee, Varroa destructor, has formed a lethal association with Deformed wing virus, a once rare and benign RNA virus. In concert, the two have killed millions of wild and managed colonies, particularly across the Northern Hemisphere, forcing the need for regular acaricide application to ensure colony survival. However, despite the short association (in evolutionary terms), a small but increasing number of A. mellifera populations across the globe have been surviving many years without any mite control methods. This long-term survival, or Varroa resistance, is consistently associated with the same suite of traits (recapping, brood removal and reduced mite reproduction) irrespective of location. Here we conduct an analysis of data extracted from 60 papers to illustrate how these traits connect together to explain decades of mite resistance data. We have potentially a unified understanding of natural Varroa resistance that will help the global industry achieve widespread miticide-free beekeeping and indicate how different honeybee populations across four continents have resolved a recent threat using the same suite of behaviours.

Abstract:
AbstractThe toy piano is fast becoming a concert instrument in its own right, with its own (growing) body of repertoire that has moved well beyond John Cage's 1948 classic Suite for Toy Piano. There are dedicated musicians specialising in toy piano performance all over the world, and numerous composers producing new works written specifically for the toy piano. This unusual miniature instrument provides a respite from the traditional implications of the grand piano, breaks the ice with audiences and allows pianists to perform in locations that would otherwise be inaccessible. In this article the author introduces the history and mechanism of the instrument, performance considerations, extended techniques and approaches to working with electronics, recent repertoire and suggestions for performers and composers. Discussion is supplemented with musical examples.

Abstract:
Background. Changes in the conditions of human existence have sharpened our sense of time. Today’s cultural space has adapted our perception of art to the simultaneous existence in “offline” and “online” forms. This new reality needs its artistic embodiment. When a contemporary composer, whose name has not yet gained widespread recognition, succeeds in accomplishing such a task, it demonstrates the opening of a new page in national art and becomes an interesting and significant event. Such an event is piano music of our contemporary Yurii Reshetar, which has not yet become the subject of scientific comprehension. The research methodology. The study is based on a synthesis of traditional musicological (genre-stylistic and comparative analysis) and modern, interpretive approaches, which are based on a question about the factors that determined the basic components of the author’s vision. Results. Yurii Reshetar is a composer whose work is endowed with a sharp sense of beauty and uniqueness of musical language. The musical genres to which Yu. Reshetar refers belong to the classical treasury, but in the author’s interpretation they acquire a new sound. Yu. Reshetar has a unique biography. He got into the composition at the age of 30. Lack of professional education did not hinder the dynamic growth and acquisition of true compositional skill. An interested appeal to early genres is seen in the large creative heritage of the composer. Toccata, which has been included by the author in the “16 Concert Etudes” collection, is one of the many works of the composer, which embodied the ideas of movement and time. Toccata style can be found in his numerous works: in “16 Concert Etudes” cycle, in Sonata for piano in E minor, in Gigue from the Suite for Piano. Toccata was created on October 17, 2017, it has a program content, which the author designates with the words “Purifying by fire”. To realize the chosen artistic content, the composer aptly chooses a form, which is unusual for toccata. This is an atypical rondo: A B A В1 A, where the main theme (the theme of “fire”) is a refrain, and the theme of B and B1 is associated with the changing of spirit state of man under the influence of fire. The texture formula of the main theme of toccata by repetitions and leaps of the main sound up and down the octave, resembles the unexpected flashes of flames. Toccata by Yu. Reshetar is written in E flat minor. Performing of a virtuoso work on black keys has its own peculiarities: even if a performer is familiar with the pianistic difficulties, this additional difficulty encourages special concentration and control over hand coordination, to sharpening of the rationalization of movements and accuracy of finger movements. The standard of Toccata performance is its author’s interpretation, which is publicly available on the YouTube channel. The performance impresses with a balance between the clear logic of building the form and the artistic richness of the music. Toccata’s music requires from the performer versatility of interpretation: of the artistic sense, understanding of the stylistic synthesis, creation of a modern image of the piano sound and the novelty of tonal-harmonic colors, developed metro-rhythmic sense, the ability to express the individuality. But the pianistic convenience of textural presentation is evidence of the author’s natural feeling the laws of piano performance. Such impressions were shared by pianist Anastasia Zakharchenko, who performed Toccata during a competition held at the Lviv National Musical Academy named after Mykola Lysenko in December 2017. The toccata concept has also found its artistic embodiment in other works of the composer. Energy of modernity reflected in the intention of the directed ostinato movement is also skillfully embodied by Yu. Reshetar in the “16 Concert Etudes” cycle op. 38 (21.09.2019). Each of etudes is a pearl that reveals the harmonious combination of the uniqueness of the author’s stylistic qualities, the modernity of artistic thinking and the unexpected originality of texture finds. The capriciousness of figurative characteristics is embodied with such imagination and inventiveness that even a high level of technical complexity will not be an obstacle for the enthusiastic mastering of this cycle by performers. “Concert style” underlined by the author is achieved through the using of various composing methods and techniques, among which the most weight is the toccata style. The refined aesthetics of baroque music acquires its charming and convincing embodiment in Yu. Reshetar’s “Barogue Suite for Piano”. The suite consists of 7 pieces, each of which is a traditional part of the suite cycle of that era: Allemanda, Courante, Menuet, Aria, Gavotte, Sarabande, Gigue. The final piece of the cycle unobtrusively embodies the toccata’s principle of the ostinato movement, which is elegantly combined with the characteristic dance metro-rhythmic and ornamentation-intonational features of the baroque gigue. The refined author’s stylization is full of composer’s respect and special honoring of old traditions. Conclusions. Numerous Yu. Reshetar’s appeals to toccata style as to the embodiment of the image of continuous movement as a symbol of time and creative activity of a man emphasize that toccata and toccata style became one of the artistic preferences of the composer and the characteristic of his style. Every example of toccata style in the above-mentioned piano works by Yu. Reshetar becomes a real discovery. The composer proves to the listeners of his works that the toccata code has preserved endless prospect for its development and renewal.

Abstract:
Within the sperm nucleus, the paternal genome remains functionally inert and protected following protamination. This is marked by a structural morphogenesis that is heralded by a striking reduction in nuclear volume. Despite these changes, both human and mouse spermatozoa maintain low levels of nucleosomes that appear non-randomly distributed throughout the genome. These regions may be necessary for organizing higher order genomic structure through interactions with the nuclear matrix. The promoters of this transcriptionally quiescent genome are differentially marked by modified histones that may poise downstream epigenetic effects. This notion is supported by increasing evidence that the embryo inherits these differing levels of chromatin organization. In concert with the suite of RNAs retained in the mature sperm, they may synergistically interact to direct early embryonic gene expression. Irrespective, these features reflect the transcriptional history of spermatogenic differentiation. As such, they may soon be utilized as clinical markers of male fertility. In this review, we explore and discuss how this may be orchestrated.

There were two major works in this classical guitar recital. One was a Baroque suite for organ by the composer Dietrich Buxtehude that had been transcribed for classical guitar. The other, the Aranjuez Concerto, was a full concerto, composed for classical guitar and orchestra, by Joaquin Rodrigo. The pieces were performed with a piano reduction of the orchestral part. These two pieces represented a wide range of musical styles that can be expressed through the classical guitar -a more transparent solo composition, as well as an entire concerto for guitar and accompaniment.

Abstract:
Context: Software testability, which is the degree to which a software artifact facilitates process of testing, is not only the indication of the test process effectiveness but also gives the new perspective on code development. Since more than fifty percent of total software development costs is related to testing process activities, Software testability has always been the improving area in software domain so that we can make the software development process effective with respect to test cases writing and fault detection process. Objectives: The research though this thesis will have the objective of proposing a conceptual framework considering the testability issues for the simpler test suite generation and facilitating the concerned persons with better effectiveness of testing. We investigate the testability factors and testability metrics basically with the help of the systematic literature review and the proposed framework’s feasibility is evaluated with case study. Methods: Initially, we conduct the literature review to get broad knowledge on this domain as well for the key documents. Then study starts with the systematic literature review process guided by the review protocol to collect the testability factors and measurements. The framework is validated with the case study. The research documents are included from highly trusted e-database including Compendex, Inspec, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Springer Link and Scopus. Altogether 36 primary documents are included for the study and results are extracted. Results: From the results of systematic literature review, Software testability factors and associated measurements are found and the construction of framework for simple test generation as guidelines evaluate with case study. To make the test suite generation simpler, we propped a framework based on the FTA concepts and breakdown of high level testability factors to its simpler form of measureable level. Conclusions: Numbers of different software testability factors are presented in different researches in different perspectives. We collect important testability factors and associated measurement methods and we concluded the effect of testability in simpler test suite generation with the help of framework evaluated by case study.

Abstract:
Sudden cardiac death (SD) without structural heart disease affects about 12 to 20000 individuals each year in Europe. These sudden deaths concern mostly young population who died of a primary cardiac arrhythmia. Several studies have been lead on mendelian forms at high risk of SD such as long QT syndrome (LQTS), short QT syndrome (SQTS) and Brugada syndrome (BrS). The identification of genes in LQTS allowed us to explain arrhythmia pathophysiology and a better management for patients. However molecular diagnosis stay lacking within 25% of LQTS patients. A pangenomic approach by CGH array shows 3 deletions in KCNQ1 and KCNH2 genes, two of them concern KCNH2 gene, one take all of gene, the second is partial and was inherited in 6 patients on 3 generations. The SQTS is a rare and heterogeneous cardiopathy, 5 genes explain all of 8 cases reported today. A clinic and molecular study of new families affected by SQTS lead to identification of mutation in CACNA1C and SLC22A5 genes, suggesting a new molecular mechanism. Conversely of LQTS, a main gene (SCN5A) is associated with BrS. However SCN5A dot not constitute discerning marker for risk-stratification of SD. We evaluate the real implication of SCN5A gene in Brugada syndrome by 5 large families study in which the phenotype do not correlate with genotype. Our new molecular results suggest rather oligogenic model

Abstract:

Checking of blueprints, time plans and calculations for the reference project house-N in Växjö have helped us to map double walls' advantages and disadvantages. From interviews, we have seen similarities and difference what different people in same sector think, and how they make their conclusions. It is not always simple to decide the preferable building method in order to make the project cost-effective, prefabricated or suite-built. Factors such as the building's frame, season, work environment, resources, time and cost take considerations' to.

Through better planning, increase of prefabrication and achieving a better collaboration between developers, consultants, contractors, subcontractors and material suppliers, it is generally considered that it may increase the industrialization of the building. Then procurement of shorter construction times and lower overall costs can be achieved

Abstract:
Unseen, unheard and unconsidered, Qatar’s migrant worker population is building one of the richest countries in the world. They labor in Qatar’s high heat index1 climate, which is coincidentally comparable to an Oriental sauna, wearing the most rudimentary of clothes. Working up to 60 hours a week, migrant workers fall victim to heat stress and dozens are hospitalized daily, starting as early as March and increasing in numbers during the peak months of June to August. Since clothes are essentially a “second skin,” affecting the rate and efficiency with which heat is exchanged between the body and its surroundings, a concept garment was designed to improve thermal comfort. Low-tech, indigenous heat-management systems are combined with new technologies and knowledge of human physiology to design a two-layer suit that aims to optimize heat exchange mechanisms. The suit enhances radiation, convection and evaporation by having a snug-fitting inner wicking layer and a loose-cut outer shell, and by using strategically placed vents, perforations, and Phase Change Material (PCM) packs. Using fiction as a medium of social commentary and critical design, the concept suit borrows from the superhero aesthetic to present the migrant worker in a new light. The suit denotes power, symbolizing the superhuman feat these workers perform and their true worth to the economy. Its aesthetic and function aim to improve worker morale and performance. Mapping, scoping and primary and secondary qualitative and quantitative research have been used throughout the design process. This is in addition to an ethnographic study, field observations, material explorations, body storming and experimentation.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper introduces a new property called robust reachability which refines the standard notion of reachability in order to take replicability into account. A bug is robustly reachable if a controlled input can make it so the bug is reached whatever the value of uncontrolled input. Robust reachability is better suited than standard reachability in many realistic situations related to security (e.g., criticality assessment or bug prioritization) or software engineering (e.g., replicable test suites and flakiness). We propose a formal treatment of the concept, and we revisit existing symbolic bug finding methods through this new lens. Remarkably, robust reachability allows differentiating bounded model checking from symbolic execution while they have the same deductive power in the standard case. Finally, we propose the first symbolic verifier dedicated to robust reachability: we use it for criticality assessment of 4 existing vulnerabilities, and compare it with standard symbolic execution.

Abstract:
AbstractJapan has consistently adopted a deterrence-by-denial strategy in the post-war period. Its ability to deter foreign attacks depends more heavily on its ability to deny hostility than to punish perpetrators. Japan’s deterrence-by-denial posture has faced at least two major problems. One problem is the inherent limit on its ability to deter foreign attacks. This posture is more oriented toward defence-by-denial than real deterrence. Japan’s national security resources and institutions are positioned to deny hostility to defend the homeland, but they are not suited to deter foreign attackers because Japan bans itself from having the ability to conduct offensive military operations—a necessary factor for deterrence by the imposition of threats. Existing restrictions on the use and threat of force stem from post-war constitutional and normative constraints that have proven anachronistic today.

Abstract:
AbstractHuman attention processes play a major role in the optimization of human-machine interaction (HMI) systems. This work describes a suite of innovative components within a novel framework in order to assess the human factors state of the human operator primarily by gaze and in real-time. The objective is to derive parameters that determine information about situation awareness of the human collaborator that represents a central concept in the evaluation of interaction strategies in collaboration. The human control of attention provides measures of executive functions that enable to characterize key features in the domain of human-machine collaboration. This work presents a suite of human factors analysis components (the Human Factors Toolbox) and its application in the assembly processes of a future production line. Comprehensive experiments on HMI are described which were conducted with typical tasks including collaborative pick-and-place in a lab based prototypical manufacturing environment.

Abstract:
Although the most prominent material in contemporary construction practice due to its obvious advantages, concrete possesses a number of drawbacks. One of the advantageous principles for decades is to enable a large scale on-site application of this material with acceptable properties, needed to withstand specific conditions. A concept of 3d printing concrete presents a promising ground for further improvement of this principle. While maintaining as much as possible of the prerequisite and common properties to answer the construction demands, this material has to evolve as much as possible to fulfill the 3d concept, which would, in turn, pave a way for the next level of its construction applications. This paper presents the main principles of 3d printing concrete, by discussing the main goals and the drawbacks that have to be solved prior to wider application. Also, one specific facility- wind tower will be reconsidered as a potentially promising ground for this old construction material dressed in a new suit.

Abstract:
The power and promise of genome editing, CRISPR specifically, was first realized with the discovery of CRISPR loci in the 1980s.i Since that time, CRISPR-Cas systems have been further developed enabling genome editing in virtually all organisms across the tree of life.i In the last few years, we have seen the development of a diverse set of CRISPR-based technologies that has revolutionized genome manipulation.ii Enabling a more diverse set of actors than has been seen with other emerging technologies to redefine research and development for biotechnology products encompassing food, agriculture, and medicine.ii Currently, the CRISPR community encompasses over 40,000 authors at 20,000 institutions that have documented their research in over 20,000 published and peer-reviewed studies.iii These CRISPR-based genome editing tools have promised tremendous opportunities in agriculture for the breeding of crops and livestock across the food supply chain. Potentially addressing issues associated with a growing global population, sustainability concerns, and possibly help address the effects of climate change.i These promises however, come along-side concerns of environmental and socio-economic risks associated with CRISPR-based genome editing, and concerns that governance systems are not keeping pace with the technological development and are ill-equipped, or not well suited, to evaluate these risks. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) launched an initiative in 2020 to understand the complexities of these new tools, their potential impacts on the LAC region, and how IDB may best invest in its potential adoption and governance strategies. This first series of discussion documents: “Genome Editing in Latin America: Regulatory Overview,” and “CRISPR Patent and Licensing Policy” are part of this larger initiative to examine the regulatory and institutional frameworks surrounding gene editing via CRISPR-based technologies in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) regions. Focusing on Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay, they set the stage for a deeper analysis of the issues they present which will be studied over the course of the next year through expert solicitations in the region, the development of a series of crop-specific case studies, and a final comprehensive regional analysis of the issues discovered.

Ayala, David, Ashley Graves, Colton Lauer, Henrik Strand, Chad Taylor, Kyle Weldon, and Ryan Wood. Flooding Events Post Hurricane Harvey: Potential Liability for Dam and Reservoir Operators and Recommendations Moving Forward. Edited by Gabriel Eckstein. Texas A&M University School of Law Program in Natural Resources Systems, September 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.37419/eenrs.floodingpostharvey.

Full text
Abstract:
When Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coast as a category 4 hurricane on August 25, 2017, it resulted in $125 billion in damage, rivaling only Hurricane Katrina in the amount of damage caused. It also resulted in the deaths of 88 people and destroyed or damaged 135,000 homes. Much of that devastation was the result of flooding. The storm dumped over 27 trillion gallons of rain over Texas in a matter of days. Some parts of Houston received over 50 inches of rainfall. The potential liability that dam and reservoir operators may face for decisions they make during storm and flooding events has now become a major concern for Texas citizens and its elected officials. Law suits have now been instituted against the federal government for its operation of two flood control reservoirs, as well as against the San Jacinto River Authority for its operation of a water supply reservoir. Moreover, the issues and concerns have been placed on the agenda of a number of committees preparing for the 2019 Texas legislative session. This report reviews current dam and reservoir operations in Texas and examines the potential liability that such operators may face for actions and decisions taken in response to storm and flooding events. In Section III, the report reviews dam gate operations and differentiates between water supply reservoirs and flood control reservoirs. It also considers pre-release options and explains why such actions are disfavored and not recommended. In Section IV, the report evaluates liabilities and defenses applicable to dam and reservoir operators. It explains how governmental immunity can limit the exposure of state and federally-run facilities to claims seeking monetary damages. It also discusses how such entities could be subject to claims of inverse condemnation, which generally are not subject to governmental immunity, under Texas law as well as under the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In addition, the Section discusses negligence and nuisance claims and concludes that plaintiffs asserting either or both of these claims will have difficulty presenting successful arguments for flooding-related damage and harm against operators who act reasonably in the face of storm-related precipitation. Finally, Section V offers recommendations that dam and reservoir operators might pursue in order to engage and educate the public and thereby reduce the potential for disputes and litigation. Specifically, the report highlights the need for expanded community outreach efforts to engage with municipalities, private land owners, and the business community in flood-prone neighborhoods both below and above a dam. It also recommends implementation of proactive flood notification procedures as a way of reaching and alerting as many people as possible of potential and imminent flooding events. Finally, the report proposes implementation of a dispute prevention and minimization mechanism and offers recommendations for the design and execution of such a program.
