Abstract:

In 2005, materials from Hungarian composer Miklós Rózsa's personal collection were donated to Syracuse University. Among them were copies of materials used in the recording of the original film score to the 1946 movie, The Killers. In this report, these materials are analyzed and compared to the concert suite that was orchestrated by Patrick Russ and John Kull at the request of the composer. This comparison is augmented by an analysis of each of the score's themes including their cinematic functions and discussion of The Killers' origin as a short story by Ernest Hemingway. A brief historical overview of Rozsa's life and notable works is also included.

Abstract:
There were two major works in this classical guitar recital. One was a Baroque suite for organ by the composer Dietrich Buxtehude that had been transcribed for classical guitar. The other, the Aranjuez Concerto, was a full concerto, composed for classical guitar and orchestra, by Joaquin Rodrigo. The pieces were performed with a piano reduction of the orchestral part. These two pieces represented a wide range of musical styles that can be expressed through the classical guitar -a more transparent solo composition, as well as an entire concerto for guitar and accompaniment.

Abstract:
Context: Software testability, which is the degree to which a software artifact facilitates process of testing, is not only the indication of the test process effectiveness but also gives the new perspective on code development. Since more than fifty percent of total software development costs is related to testing process activities, Software testability has always been the improving area in software domain so that we can make the software development process effective with respect to test cases writing and fault detection process. Objectives: The research though this thesis will have the objective of proposing a conceptual framework considering the testability issues for the simpler test suite generation and facilitating the concerned persons with better effectiveness of testing. We investigate the testability factors and testability metrics basically with the help of the systematic literature review and the proposed framework’s feasibility is evaluated with case study. Methods: Initially, we conduct the literature review to get broad knowledge on this domain as well for the key documents. Then study starts with the systematic literature review process guided by the review protocol to collect the testability factors and measurements. The framework is validated with the case study. The research documents are included from highly trusted e-database including Compendex, Inspec, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Springer Link and Scopus. Altogether 36 primary documents are included for the study and results are extracted. Results: From the results of systematic literature review, Software testability factors and associated measurements are found and the construction of framework for simple test generation as guidelines evaluate with case study. To make the test suite generation simpler, we propped a framework based on the FTA concepts and breakdown of high level testability factors to its simpler form of measureable level. Conclusions: Numbers of different software testability factors are presented in different researches in different perspectives. We collect important testability factors and associated measurement methods and we concluded the effect of testability in simpler test suite generation with the help of framework evaluated by case study.

Abstract:
Sudden cardiac death (SD) without structural heart disease affects about 12 to 20000 individuals each year in Europe. These sudden deaths concern mostly young population who died of a primary cardiac arrhythmia. Several studies have been lead on mendelian forms at high risk of SD such as long QT syndrome (LQTS), short QT syndrome (SQTS) and Brugada syndrome (BrS). The identification of genes in LQTS allowed us to explain arrhythmia pathophysiology and a better management for patients. However molecular diagnosis stay lacking within 25% of LQTS patients. A pangenomic approach by CGH array shows 3 deletions in KCNQ1 and KCNH2 genes, two of them concern KCNH2 gene, one take all of gene, the second is partial and was inherited in 6 patients on 3 generations. The SQTS is a rare and heterogeneous cardiopathy, 5 genes explain all of 8 cases reported today. A clinic and molecular study of new families affected by SQTS lead to identification of mutation in CACNA1C and SLC22A5 genes, suggesting a new molecular mechanism. Conversely of LQTS, a main gene (SCN5A) is associated with BrS. However SCN5A dot not constitute discerning marker for risk-stratification of SD. We evaluate the real implication of SCN5A gene in Brugada syndrome by 5 large families study in which the phenotype do not correlate with genotype. Our new molecular results suggest rather oligogenic model

Abstract:

Checking of blueprints, time plans and calculations for the reference project house-N in Växjö have helped us to map double walls' advantages and disadvantages. From interviews, we have seen similarities and difference what different people in same sector think, and how they make their conclusions. It is not always simple to decide the preferable building method in order to make the project cost-effective, prefabricated or suite-built. Factors such as the building's frame, season, work environment, resources, time and cost take considerations' to.

Through better planning, increase of prefabrication and achieving a better collaboration between developers, consultants, contractors, subcontractors and material suppliers, it is generally considered that it may increase the industrialization of the building. Then procurement of shorter construction times and lower overall costs can be achieved

Abstract:
Unseen, unheard and unconsidered, Qatar’s migrant worker population is building one of the richest countries in the world. They labor in Qatar’s high heat index1 climate, which is coincidentally comparable to an Oriental sauna, wearing the most rudimentary of clothes. Working up to 60 hours a week, migrant workers fall victim to heat stress and dozens are hospitalized daily, starting as early as March and increasing in numbers during the peak months of June to August. Since clothes are essentially a “second skin,” affecting the rate and efficiency with which heat is exchanged between the body and its surroundings, a concept garment was designed to improve thermal comfort. Low-tech, indigenous heat-management systems are combined with new technologies and knowledge of human physiology to design a two-layer suit that aims to optimize heat exchange mechanisms. The suit enhances radiation, convection and evaporation by having a snug-fitting inner wicking layer and a loose-cut outer shell, and by using strategically placed vents, perforations, and Phase Change Material (PCM) packs. Using fiction as a medium of social commentary and critical design, the concept suit borrows from the superhero aesthetic to present the migrant worker in a new light. The suit denotes power, symbolizing the superhuman feat these workers perform and their true worth to the economy. Its aesthetic and function aim to improve worker morale and performance. Mapping, scoping and primary and secondary qualitative and quantitative research have been used throughout the design process. This is in addition to an ethnographic study, field observations, material explorations, body storming and experimentation.

Full text
Abstract:
//Abstract: Background: Mental workload represents one of the obstacles encountered by people returning to work following prolonged incapacity due to a common mental disorder. Their return-to-work could be facilitated by measuring mental workload in order to guide the progression of increasing work tasks. However, actual measurement tools do not consider the whole mental workload continuum (underload, comfortable load and overload). Purpose: This study contributes to filling this gap through the conception of a new mental workload questionnaire (MWQ) designed for the return-to-work process following a common mental disorder. Methods: First, a concept analysis was conducted in order to identify mental workload dimensions and help propose a set of indicators for its measurement in a work rehabilitation setting following a common mental disorder. The proposed items were revised by work rehabilitation experts (n=16) through a formalised consensus method (Delphi). Finally, a qualitative pretest was conducted among people implicated in a return-to-work process following a common mental disorder, either as clinicians (n=5) or workers (n=5). Results: The concept analysis of mental workload led to the following attributes: 1) an immediate or short term mental state related to the effort or the cost to the individual resulting from accomplishing work at a given level of performance; 2) a mental state related to both affective and cognitive components; 3) a continuum varying from mental underload to mental overload, with a comfortable mental workload existing between these extremes and 4) a negative mental state (both continuum extremes) or positive (comfortable mental workload) for the individual. Mental workload indicators were constructed to cover the identified attributes. Their relevance and their clarity appeared to be satisfying following consultation with the work rehabilitation experts, as well as qualitative pretesting among the future MWQ users. Conclusion: This study led to the systematic development of an innovative questionnaire as it measures the whole mental workload continuum. The MWQ represents a new tool offered to the clinician and the researcher working in mental health rehabilitation. Further validation studies are required to sustain its use.

Zaghlool, Baher SalahElDeen Othman Ahmed. "Behaviour of three-dimensional concrete structures under concurrent orthogonal seismic excitations." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Civil Engineering, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1177.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study into the response and seismic safety of three-dimensional multi-storey concrete structures under concurrent orthogonal seismic excitations. It employs the nonlinear time-history method as its analysis tools. Time-history analyses rely heavily on their utilised earthquake records. Accordingly, this study examines the different approaches of selecting earthquake suites and develops a methodology of selecting representative earthquake scenarios. This methodology is credibly implemented in selecting a far- and a near field suites representative of the New Zealand seismic hazard. The study investigates the response of 6-, 9- and 12-storey concrete structures of different n-X-bays × m-Y-bays. Bidirectional responses of these considered structures are examined and consequently the current combination rules are scrutinised. Consequently this study strongly recommends the use of the 40-percent combination rule in lieu of the widely used 30-percent rule; and the use of time-history analysis in lieu of quasi/equivalent static and response modal analysis methods to avoid their strong dependence on combination rules. An intensive study is conducted employing the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) technique to investigate structural demands of interstorey drifts, lateral storey drifts and storey accelerations. The study utilises the developed far-field suite and identifies the 50th and 90th percentile demands. Hence it provides easy-to-use expressions to facilitate rapid calculation of the structural demands and the effects of biaxial interactions. An implementation into the Demand and Capacity Factor Design (DCFD) format is presented that infers confidence in the performance levels of the considered structures. The study also draws attention to the importance of considering storey accelerations as their storey values reach as high as 10 × PGA. A sensitivity study is conducted by repeating the IDA investigation while using the developed near-field suite. Subsequently a comparison between the near- and the far-field results is conducted. The results were markedly similar albeit of less magnitudes until the (seismic hazard) intensity measure IM = Sa(T₁) = 0.4g when the near-field results show sudden flat large increase in demands suggesting a brittle collapse. This is attributed to the higher content of the higher mode frequencies contained in near-field ground motions. Finally, the study examines the (vectorial) radial horizontal shear demands in columns and beam-column joints of the previous far- and near-field studies. The combined radial shear demands in corner, edge and internal columns and joints are evaluated that roughly show a square-root proportional relationship with IM that exhibit somewhat brittle failure at IM ≥ 0.35g. Shears demands in the (4-way) internal columns and the (2-way) corner joints show highest magnitude in their respective class. The results suggest transverse joint shear reinforcement of 1.5, 1.0 and 0.5 of the longitudinal reinforcement of the neighbouring beam respectively for corner, edge and internal joints. An implementation of a proposed practical (and simpler) DCFD format shows satisfactory confidence in columns performance in shear up to IM = 0.35g, conversely to joints unsatisfactory performance in shear at the onset of inelastic behaviour (IM > 0.05g).

"A Performer’s Guide and Structural Analysis of Sergei Taneyev’s Concert Suite for Violin and Orchestra." Doctoral diss., 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.53737.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: This research paper is a study of Sergei Taneyev’s Concert Suite for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 28 and includes Taneyev’s biography, a brief musical analysis which benefits the interpretation, and performance suggestions from the perspective of a concert violinist. The purpose of this paper is to enable performers to achieve a better understanding of this artwork and make informed musical choices. Sergei Ivanovich Taneyev (1856-1915) was a Russian composer. As a composition pupil of Tchaikovsky, and a teacher of Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Lyapunov, and Glière, Taneyev is an important figure in Russian music. His compositions include operas, symphonies, chamber music, songs, and piano music. Taneyev’s style was influenced by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and various European composers. His cosmopolitan style, and wide-ranging compositional interests do not easily lend themselves generalization. This difficulty in categorizing his music along with his self-criticism and aversion to self-promotion, contribute to his lack of recognition when compared with his contemporaries. The Concert Suite for Violin and Orchestra, composed six years before his death, is his only work for Violin and Orchestra and was his last large composition. This work is cast in an unusual five-movement structure and embodies various brilliant violin techniques and rich Romantic-era harmonies. Taneyev’s interests in “old fashioned” style and folk music are evidenced by some of the movements titled “Prelude,” “Gavotte,” and “Theme and Variation” which contains a double fugue. He also utilizes folk dances such as the mazurka and tarantella. This performance guide provides practical interpretational advice based on an analysis of harmony, form and structural divisions, stylistic considerations and violin techniques. A brilliant and charming work, it has sadly been neglected. Through the study and performance of this piece, the author hopes to provide performers with useful information that enables more musicians to know and enjoy this valuable masterwork.

This thesis focus on Mikhail Pletnev (1957-) and his transcription Concert Suite from the Ballet “The Nutcracker” for Piano. The Nutcracker is originally from the same title ballet, composed by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). This thesis aims to study how Pletnev transcribed Tchaikovsky's ballet, The Nutcracker, op.71 as a piano work. This thesis is divided into five chapters: the first chapter illustrates this thesis research motive and objectives, the scope of the study and methods. The second chapter gives introduction of Pletnev’s background. The third chapter is Pletnev’s Concert Suites from the Ballet “The Nutcracker.” In this chapter, first, I gave an overview of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. that included the background of Tchaikovsky’ s The Nutcracker and according to Pletnev’s Concert Suites from the Ballet “The Nutcracker” to figure out the selection and order of the pieces. Then stand on the interpretation of Pletnev to research Concert Suites from the Ballet “The Nutcracker.” The fourth chapter is the analysis of Pletnev’s Concert Suite from the Ballet “The Nutcracker” for Piano. This chapter also explored the relationship between the original ballet and the piano transcription, especially on the orchestration and the piano technique. A comparison also involved. The fifth chapter the interpretation of Concert Suite from the Ballet “The Nutcracker” for Piano. After studying the transcription of the Pletnev and the orchestration of Tchaikovsky’ s The Nutcracker, then combined the orcheatral instrument timbre and texture into the piano performance. The sixth chapter is the conclusion that synthesized above concepts and summarize personal opinions.

' One may distinguish himself in any trade' chorus suite based on Professor Yong-Gang Li’s Chinese music creating theoriers, However is the theory practical motive? How is and the rational feasibility of its theory? However, I want to discuss that the motivation behind his creaton and if the theory is practical in the paper. The western music has been poured into China in a large amount since Qing Dynasty. The theory of the American-European music, works have been injecting new blood into Chinese music constantly, with the rapid westernized speed since the May Fourth Movement. A lot of musicians are cultivated , however, despite of at the same time all the growth in music paying and composing a or the research on musicology, the research on the theory of the music is not much, with the occidentalizing impact of the trend, the Chinese composers use the theory of the western music, in the skill (technology) their skill is out of question but not get deeply to the meaning and expression. After all, chinese music is different from the western one. Under the chinese composers begin to consider what is chinese music, and how to create it? These questions have been stored in Chinese musicians’ minds all the time. It is not until after WWII that relevant theories and research are fully–develop! However, because there were too few music theoreticians in China at that time to produce the intact theory of creating. Influenced by the Chinese style music, more and more musicians begin to probe into and study the theory about Chinese style music, famous composers such as, You-Di Huang, Shin-Hai Shian, Wen-Zhong Zhou, Chang-Hui Xu, Yi Chen, Tan Dun, Ho-long Ma, Hwaung-long Pan, etc. created Chinese style melodies. Professor Yong-Gang Li is composer of this period, He grew up in war-time and promoted anti-communism in his middle age, It is in his old age he creates his personal style professor Yong-Gang Li is theories well-known and seen as a music educationist, but his creative music is less mentioned; But I see a lot of theories combining with ctreative work in his music such as ' Chang jiang River ' and large-scale chorus works as ' One may distinguish himself in any trade' particularly with ' One may distinguish himself in any trade' is professor’s account in one’s own experimental based on modern Chinise music theory, witch is the focal point that this text intend to probe into. We are living in a generation where people score a success by appearence with the image we reflect playing a crucial role. The apparel we’re in reveals the desirable image we’re going after; to put it another way, we define ourselves at work by the apparel we’re wearing. Clothing has a great inflence not only on our appearance but also on our attitide, behavior and impressions which others have on us. Office ladies have already become a significant group of people in the society of Taiwan. The aim of this research report is to design suitable power suits for urban ladies. Power suits provide ladies with confidence as well as professional image at work. Nowadays, women don’t need masculine or man-like suits any longer to prove their capablity because they can show they’re as competitive as men by means of demonstrating their competence. Therefore, power suits are put in a new light, transforming into individual and stylish ones with a view to ensuring women attain equality and self confidence. My series of power suits designs lays great emphasis on women’s self- consciousness instead of others’ opinion. I designed the series through interview and my own work experience, categorizing office ladies’ favorite suits. This series of designs is meant to equip office ladies with self-assurance in the hope that every women in power suit radiates charisma and elegance, appreciates her own beauty and confidence, and even improves work performance. Suitable power suits are to women what armors are to warriors; more importantly, power suits strengthen women’s confidence.
