Abstract:
This paper aims at analyzing the concessive relation, as a complex predication, under the scope of the freezing concept. After having defined the three terms of the analysis, we proceed to the description of the concessive relation, which includes several predicates at a time. This complexity is fixed in the language through grammaticalization, as a form of freezing, by means of grammatical expressions used to structure the organization of the predicative relations in the utterance, whether sentencial or multi-sentencial. This fixation in the language declines the same concessive relation with

This paper sets forth a theoretical framework in relation to metarepresentation and evidentiality in Spanish, supported by an empirical analysis of tense/mood contrast expressions. More specifically, we describe how metarepresentational and evidential content are expressed and interpreted in if‐conditional and although-concessive clauses. We also report original experimental data from a written, multiple choice interpretation task in L2 Spanish; and from an L1 task in Spanish with a set of conditional and concessive utterances in which indicative and subjunctive moods alternate. This article studies concession in Chinese proverbs from three different points of view: syntactic, semantic and pragmatic. It is based on several previous works that focus on concession and proverbs both in French and in Chinese. To our knowledge, no research has been done on the concession in proverbs. Proverbs possess several peculiar linguistic traits that condition the expression of concession. The objective of this paper is to examine the realization of this notion under proverbial syntactic constraints as well as to highlight their logico-semantic basis and to assess their pragmatic eff

It is known that the text is a syntactic unit consisting of more than one independent sentence. These sentences are connected with each other by content and grammatical aspect and are merged under one concept. In fictions, where two or more sentences refer to one content there are many cases where the event in the second sentence can not be an obstacle for the occurrence of an event in the first sentence. Such sentences are considered as texts in a field with the same content, indicating the attitude of concession. In syntactic integrities with superphrases, interconnected meaningful relations

In light of the tendency in studies of Japanese discourse and communication to account for patterns of social interaction in terms of cultural concepts such as wa (“harmony”), omoiyari (“empathy”), and enryo (“restraint”), this report sets out to demonstrate how much of an endogenously produced, local achievement social interaction can be in Japanese. To do so, the techniques and principles of conversation analysis are employed to describe how a particular social action, the expression of concession to statements of opposition, is produced by participants in a set of Japanese university facult

This thesis is focused on the study of concessives clauses in the Czech and Spanish languages. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part describes the concessives expressions and semantics of both languages using secondary literature. The practical part uses the parallel corpus to examine what lexical equivalents correspond to individual Czech concessives expressions, and shows their individual semantic or positional differences in detail.

The aim of this paper is to compare the means of expression of factual concessive relation in Italian and Russian on the basis of a bidirectional parallel corpus. The study of the expression of purposive interclausal relation revealed that loose coordination prevails in Russian while tighter subordination dominates in Italian (Biagini 2012). However, for the expression of concessive relation, the results do not confirm a predominance of juxtaposition or coordination in Russian when compared with Italian.

Abstract:
AbstractI describe the expression of free choice in Tibetan, which involves the combination of a wh-word, copula, conditional morphology, and a scalar ‘even’ particle. I demonstrate that the conventional semantics of these ingredients successfully combine to derive universal free choice meaning. This motivates a new approach to the compositional semantics of universal free choice, which does not prescribe its universal force. This quantificational force is parasitic on the modal/temporal operator which is restricted by the conditional; the scalar ‘even’ particle then ensures that the conditional restricts a necessity modal.

Colombi talked in a lukewarm fashion of reforms. Tempesti, when it was his turn, wholeheartedly professed a reverence for the religious beliefs of his colleague. The crisis [of government] might prove useful, a good step along the road to normality. It didn’t matter, although it was obvious, that to each this meant something different.
