Abstract:
Contrary to modal logic, the linguistic approach to modality, without in any way minimizing modal relationships as such (for example by way of the “square of opposition”), tends towards a relative calculation of the knowledge and the beliefs of the speaker. In this article the (universal) modal of the universe of beliefs or of possible worlds will be updated, focusing on how the signs of concession can be interpreted, then defining the “modal calculus” (conceived as a system suitable for determining the modal content of any proposition) in order to apply it to concessive relationships.

The word ведь has a variety of shades of meaning, it features polyfunctionality and syntactic variability. Most grammatical descriptions qualify it as both a particle and a conjunction. Certainty markers seem to have a presence intrinsic to the opinion genre and, therefore, are expected to “exhibit a certain uniformity across languages” (Dafouz, 2008, p. 110). Whereas the non-correspondence between certainly and ciertamente soon becomes apparent, the results of earlier studies (Ramón, 2009; Carretero, 2012) might well lead to the hypothesis that the PPs sin duda and desde luego realize in Spanish opinion articles the same discourse functio

This chapter offers a theory of corporate governance through a two-pronged approach, one that sails closer to the contractarian, pluralist account, the other closer to the rationalist, concession theorists. In the first instance, we look to the values that are explicitly or implicitly endorsed by a particular corporation and then ask if its organization and actions are cultivating relationships consistent with those values. This approach is pluralist in nature, adopting the status quo assumption that we ought to be more deferential to individual corporations’ choice of “normative cores.” The s

This chapter explores how states integrate cyber operations into larger coercive strategies to compel their rivals. Cyber operations clearly do not occur in isolation, but analysts speak of these events as if they do. The chapter posits an empirical question: Are unique combinations of power more likely to produce concessions? To answer this question, it maps how states combine cyber, diplomatic, economic, and conventional military instruments to compel their rivals. It also examines the utility of

Just as laws are variably realized so are objective chances: in the patterns identified by the best system analysis and in propensities. Theories of chance face two significant problems: the problem of undermining that is alleged to afflict Humean accounts of chance and, second, the relationship of chance to frequencies and, thus, to successful action. Although some propensity accounts can avoid undermining, they do so at the expense of the second relationship. More concessive propensity theories make some headway with regard to the second problem but start to suffer from the first problem. The perceived advantage for agents in conforming their beliefs to chances, understood as propensities, is rooted in the same mistake about induction identified in Chapter 14. So the successful treatment of chance does not tell in favour of one theory of the laws that support them than another.

Theoretically, integration to the World Trade Organization (WTO) system should improve the economic transition performance. This research uses the yearly transition indicators by the EBRD to discover the relationship between economic transition performance and integration to the WTO in the contexts of before-and-after WTO membership and before-and-after the end of concession period defined for a new member to implement all obligations. Author employs bivariate de-trended regression analysis estimated by using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), individually for Armenia and Georgia, and within a panel analysis covering all three countries of the region. Research findings provide strong evidence of significant positive or acceleratory effect of integration to the WTO on economic transition in the South Caucasus. Surprise finding is insignificant impact over competition policy index, which is supposed to be affected by integration.

Fiore, Alessio. "Fidelity." In The Seigneurial Transformation. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198825746.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
It explores changing notions of the concept of fidelity (fidelitas) in the wake of the collapse of central power in Italy at the end of the eleventh century. The author notes that fealty was by no means an inseparable part of the concession of benefices as is shown by the widespread documentation of feudum sine fidelitate in Lombardy. Fidelity appears in other contexts too, for example to give legitimacy to contracts of sale and rent; it is also used when investing individuals in office or authority and presenting them with a standard (vexillum). Oaths of fealty also feature in alliances and pacts. Orality and gesture play an important part in rituals of fidelity. Bonds of fidelity could exist between social equals and did not necessarily imply a relationship of superiority and subordination, but the most common interlocutors are the upper and lower ranks of the aristocracy. Ecclesiastical institutions and proto-communes also made use of fealty to bind individuals to them. The language of fidelity also spreads to the church in formalizing relations of a purely internal and ecclesiastical character, a development that the author ascribes to pope Gregory VII, even if not many examples survive before 1100. Finally it discusses the origins of the oath of fidelity, suggesting that it may go back to Charlemagne’s order that all his subjects should swear loyalty to the emperor.

Abstract:
This Chapter discusses the many important differences between the nature and processes of Industrialisation in Scotland and Norway from the 18th Century up to the present day. The dissferences discussed particularly concern the timing of the shift from ‘proto-industrialisation’ to ’modern industrialisation’ based on the factory system; the relationship between agrarian, rural, urban and industrial development, especially concerning the peasantry, migration streams and urbanisation; working-class divisions and alliances; attitudes and policies concerning foreign interest and capital in relation to basic resources; the source of energy for modern industry and its impacts on the location of industrial development; the importance of domestic and overseas markets and industrial protection; different ideas on the role of the State and protectionism; and the differential impact of neo-liberal policies after 1970. It is argued that because of these deep-rooted differences and Scotland’s constitutional position within the UK, the experience of the development and exploitation of North Sea oil and gas in the two countries after about 1970 is also quite different, as are its social and economic consequences. Among other points, the Chapter discusses how Norway’s strong local government tradition (Ch.5) leveraged Norway’s wealth-sharing scheme from its oil and gas boom, and the importance of Norway’s Concession Laws of 1906-09 restricting the activities of foreign capital in natural resources, which set the stage and deepened Norway’s public goods culture. In contrast, Scotland’s oil revenues routinely bled off to elites and investors.
