Viale, Adrián. "La papauté et les institutions politiques et ecclésiastiques de l'Empire byzantin (VIe-VIIIe siècles)." Thesis, Paris 1, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PA01H045.
Full textThis dissertation analyses the development of the institutional identity of the Papacy during the Byzantine period, that is, the representation of the Roman Church in some official sources between the age of Emperor Justinian and the first half of the eighth century. The main sources are the acts of the ecumenical councils, as well as the official production of the imperial power and the papacy. The purpose is to show that, far from being monolithic, the institutional identity of the papacy was changing, dynamic and fluid, and the elements that composed it were modified according to the context, the necessities and the relations of power. The study focuses in particular on ecclesiological disputes and the councils aimed at resolving them : the Three Chapters controversy and the Second Council of Constantinople of 553, the monothelite dispute, including the Lateran Council of 649 and the Third Council of Constantinople of 680-681, and the Quinisext Council of 691-692. It also incorporates other developments related to the representation of the place of the Roman Church, the role of Popes, and the reception of ecumenical councils

Full textThe African synod which had been convoked by Pope John-Paul II an January 6th 1989 took place in Rome from April 10th to May 8th 1994. It was a really important event for Africa, "an intense and sustained collegial work" as the Pope said. But it is a known fact that it took place in Rome at the end of a long negotiation and amid some discrepant speeches. As a matter of fact the story of evangelisation which was going together with colonization had created the "three C theory : colonizing, civilizing and christianising". . .

Full textWhat comprehension of the Church-world relationship emerges from the discussions of the bishops of Black Africa at the meetings of their Synod of bishops between 1967 and 2009? This is the question our present study seeks to explore. On the one hand, it proposes a study of the bishops' discussions, and on the other, it seeks to comprehend the vision which they have of the Church and of her relationship with the world in which it lives – a world with which it seeks to dialogue. The modality of this dialogue with the world is a question that arises, and must be specified. In the first place, the foundation of this theological and ecclesiological research is an exercise in reading the texts. The exercise consists of bringing together and presenting a body of work; as well as examining the context of contemporary Africa, and the ecclesial context of the Church of Africa as the location in which these episcopal communications have been delivered. These contextual elements prepare us for – and lead us into – an analysis of the bishops' discussions from the perspective of a relationship: that of the Church with the world. In the second section, the elements gathered from a search through the whole body of work have been reorganized into a summary of the ecclesiological profile which emerges from an analysis of these discussions by the bishops of Sub-Saharan Africa. In order to reach that point, we have worked through the problem of Church-world relationship in both Vatican II and in the discussions of the African bishops, with the goal of ultimately identifying the principal ecclesiological models which run through them. At the end, in light of the concepts of solidarity, dialogue, and service which are present in Gaudium et spes, a final synthesis evaluates the ecclesiological contribution of the bishops of Africa.
Atallah, Elias. "L'influence de l'Église romaine sur la restructuration de l'Église maronite : le synode maronite de 1736, débats entre Rome et l'Église maronite." Paris 4, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994PA040124.
Full textThis work deals about the roman's church influence on the restructuration of the Maronite church. The Lebanese synod of 1736, main legislation of this church and fundamental object of our study, had been the cause of serious controversy between the fathers of the synod on one hand, and of a long debate between them and Rome on the other hand. This synod of tridentine inspiration, by delimiting the new dioceses and entrusting them to permanent bishops who can self-govern their respective dioceses, reduced both the patriarch's and the collegial power whose origins go back to the monastery of St Maroun with the first patriarch St John-Maroun himself monk, the bishops and their successors who were all monks until the end of the 17th century. Depending no more on the patriarch's power, the bishops didn't feel - and don't feel - the need anymore to join as a synod today, the Maronites with their bishops are numerous in the vast diaspora. A strong communion must be established between the bishops and their patriarch - as it was before - in order to govern their people in a collegial spirit without banishing their autonomous. .

Full textThe monothelete crisis - a theological controversy around the number of wills in the Christ - remains the only debate within the chalcedonian church to lack a monographical study, despite the manifold impact it had on the byzantin empire of the 7th century, a pivotal period of its history. My dissertation, based on a recently renewed dossier of sources, attempts a study of the political implications and of the context of this dispute, which began as a reaction of a limited group of palestinian monks against the unions between the chalcedonian church and its monophysite counterparts enforced by the emperor Heraclius since ca AD 630, and which ended half a century later at an ecumenical council which accepted the doctrine of two wills. Far from being still another outbreak of the supposed eternal conflict between Rome and Constantinople, the monothelete crisis can be construed as a revolt of monk-intellectuals, grouped around Maximus the Confessor, who resorted to political means in order to impose their orthodoxy on the church of the Empire. They owed their success to their alliance with the papacy; thus, the controversy around the wills of the Christ presents an interesting case of byzantine "papocesarism" and encourages to reconsider the traditional vision of the imperial omnipotence in the religious domain. At the same time, the monotheletism is the last of the christological controversies which troubled the Empire during the late antiquity: the arabic invasions and the loss of the oriental provinces will henceforth turn the attention of the byzantines to the ritual righteousness
Andlauer, Christiane. "Le processus de décision dans un synode diocésain." Thesis, Université de Lorraine, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016LORR0113/document.
Full textThis study is undertaken with a view to present the evolution of an overall pastoral project under the conciliar impetus implementation of 1963 to 2000 in the diocese of Nice by three bishops : Mgr. Mouisset, Mgr. Saint-Macary and Mgr. Bonfils. It revolves around three concepts: conversion, structures, evangelization that meet the three criteria defined by Bishop Saint-Macary for "Diocese 2000" operation: proximity, shared responsibility and evangelization. The study of the Nice synodal process sends us back to life in communion with the local Church. Of all the forms of expression of communion, we retain that of synodality. The decision process is fundamental in a diocesan synod. We will look for its mechanisms in this thesis. We will see how it binds to the "overall pastoral" or pastoral communion that is the deep convergence of all forms of action and presence in the world, unity and mutual interpellation of all forces apostolic : priests, religious and laity. If so, the "co-responsibility of all" reflects the mission of the baptized in the Church as an individual, the synodal decision represents the expression of the community of the baptized. We'll see if the process of decision comes in or not. This thesis wants to answer the question of whether the decision process in a diocesan synod as synodality factor tends to regulate the communal aspect of the Church and at least partly reveal the personality of the bishop. This is a multi disciplinary study. The review of the synod process, in its theoretical and practical context, is based on the areas of the sociology of religion, ecclesiology and canon law

Full textThe thesis investigates the renewal of the Armenia-Byzantine relationships during the period of the restoration of the Armenian autonomy under the pertaining of the prince Ashot Bagratuni, 820?-890. It analyses the Armenian documents pertaining to the council of Shirakawan (862), convoked by the catholicos Zachary of Jagk' (855-876), and to the Byzantino-Armenian christological controversy which followed that council. It clarifies the historical setting of these events, explores the literary form and the technical language of the Armenian documents with the reference to the earlier Armenian and Byzantine theological literature: the rhetorical procedures employed by their authors, as well as the etymologic and phraseoligical elements upon which these procedures are founded. This analysis allows to situate these documents in a wider context of the Armenian theological literature and to identify the author of "Vahan's Discourse" as a non-Chalcedonian Armenian. The corpus of the canons promulgated by the council is interpreted as a joint Byzantino-Armenian attempt to hinder the insincere conversion of the Monophysites from the East of Asia Minor into the imperial Church. The thesis proposes a comparison of "Vahan's Discourse" and of Sahak M°rut's letter to Photius with other contemporary Armenian theological texts. This comparison allows to discern different trends existing in the Armenian theology of that period. The identification of the theological authorities upon which the authors of the ninth century leant allows to study the reception of doctrines in the Armenian Church and to precise the doctrinal bases that enabled this Church to stabilise its christological positions in the period following the great christological controversies in Armenia. The thesis offers a French translation of the documents, accompanied with an Armenian-Greek-French lexicon containing 250 terms

Full textThis debate about the causa fidei, which took place at the beginning of the Council of Constance, would become particularly relevant alter John XXlIl s flight. What was at stake in the Constance processes alter the Pope fled the Council was basically the definition of the relationship between the Pope and the Council, which had been dutifully overlooked while the Pope supported the Council. For this reason the processes were a particularly suitable forum for the display of conciliar superiority in a context of significant institutional weakness. While compared with other issues the relevance of these matters of faith and the causa Jan Hus were minor, at the same time they provided a background against which the main ideas regarding conciliar authority could be represented. By claiming the plenitudo potestatis for the Council there emerged a new sphere of power which required a redefinition. Liturgical and symbolical practices, but also judicial practices appear to create and define this new sphere of power. Indeed it is through judicial praxis that the Council sought to affirm its own iurisdictio and demonstrate its potestas executiva as the ultimate instance within the Church ordo iudicarius

Full textThe present study of the reception of Vatican II council in the German catholic church aims to analyze, in the chronological frame of the pontificate of Paul VIth, how the ecclesiological project of Vatican II - the constitutions lumen gentium and gaudium et spes, have been received in the German catholic church. Beginning with an analysis of the peculiar contribution of the German bishops to the constitution of the council’s texts the thesis makes clear the specific German "translation" of the main ecclesiological concepts of Vatican II in an historical situation of important social changes. The question of the laymen's participation in the church's mission as one of the major messages of Vatican II is therefore in the center of the German reception. By means of an analysis of the councils of shared responsibility established after 1965 in Germany, the main thesis of a privileged reception of lumen gentium, putting gaudium et spes on the second rank, is developed. The "local prove" of this question in the diocese of Limburg brings an extra precision to this statement. The whole study is in fact the history of the German Catholic Church from 1963 to 1978, regarded from the particular point of view of the reception of Vatican II as the fundamental event in the Catholic Church in the second half of the twentieth century

Yaovi, Voedzo Séverin. "Eglise-Famille-de Dieu : genèse et pertinence du concept : le cas du Togo." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012STRAK015.
Full textSince 'Ecclesia in Africa', the concept of the Church as Family of God has been identified as the African concept for the development of the Ecclesiology of communion advised by the second Vatican Council and as the key of the new evangelization in Africa. Its adoption has given rise to polemics among African priests and theologians, in particular concerning its genesis and its significance. Several biblical and theological studies have been carried out about the concept of the Church as Family of God. Their aim is mostly to confirm it as the ecclesiological concept in Africa. However it turns out that the promotion given at the continental, national and diocesan levels to the concept of the Church as Family of God is merely institutional or even conventional. To transcend a purely superficial implementation of the concept it seems necessary and urgent that primary importance be given to each local Church’s specific features, in terms of history, culture and community life, following the example of the experience of the Church in Burkina Faso, which turns out to be the founding model. The present work, which aims to be a monograph, delineates the genesis of the concept of the Church as Family of God in Burkina Faso and assesses its significance in a given field : the Roman Catholic Church in Togo. Eventually it attempts to reform the concept of the Church as Family of God with a view to sustaining a community reception of the second Vatican Council and of 'Ecclesia in Africa' in Togo
Cobzaru, Daniel. "L'organisation de l'Église au IVe siècle et ses fondements canoniques." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013STRAK007.
Full textThis work provides a canonical and historical approach to the organization of the Church in the 4th century, having as main purpose the reconstruction of the face of the Church according to some key aspects, as well as the understanding of how the canons of this period have shaped its face. This return to a stable organization of the Church reveals inventiveness, which the Church has shown, in many circumstances, to meet the challenges of this era. The councils of the 4th century, as well as the canon law concerning the election and the ordination of the bishop, are considered in the direction of significant detail. The study pays particular attention to the Apostolic Canon 34, which is today the most commented and cited canon in the Orthodox community, not only to legitimize the organization of autonomous and autocephalous Orthodox Churches, but also to justify the jurisdictional rights of autocephalous churches in their diaspora

Full textThis thesis focuses on the role of innovative educational projects done at the maronite schools in order to promote peace education in Lebanon. The aim of our research is to establish the possibility of peace education peace education through the vision of the Maronite Church translated into synodal texts, the educational projects and establishment projects as well as their application at maronite schools, and the internalization of different aspects of peace by students along with the demonstration of this acquisition in their behavior. The conceptual framework of the research is grounded on the five models of Peace Education by Harris and Morrison (2003). A sixth model, the mutual understanding and communication education was added. In an attempt to verify the hypotheses and answer the research question, an analysis of maronite synod texts was administered, and a study was made in maronite schools in the Caza of Baabda, where school directors were interviewed and secondary students were surveyed. To analyze the data, the "Ep-meter", a Peace Education measurement tool for schools, was created. This tool helped interpret the synod texts, the results of the interviews, and the statistical data collected from the students. The results of the study revealed that the innovative projects administered at maronite schools partially contributed to the promotion of Peace Education. Hence, in light of the six Models of Peace Education, maronite schools in Lebanon must reconsider their educational practices to help students acquire the different aspects of peace and apply them. Finally, the thesis encourages the maronite schools to: reread the synod texts in order to be faithful to the vision of the Maronite Church; review their projects and especially the educational and establishment projects in order to become coherent with the six Models of Peace Education; train teachers develop their classes and activities in the light of the six models of Peace Education

Miltos, Thomas. "Collégialité catholique et synodalité orthodoxe : recherches sur l’ecclésiologie du Concile Vatican II, ses sources, sa réception et son rôle dans le dialogue entre les Églises." Thesis, Paris 4, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA040098.
Full textSynodality seems to be a very current topic, both for the bilateral theological dialogue between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, and for each individual Church. The pontificate of Pope Francis has emphasized synodality and the Orthodox Church has just convened its Great and Holy Council (Crete, June 2016). The Second Vatican Council in 1964 promulgated the doctrine of episcopal collegiality (the bishops are organized in a college which succeeds the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles), a doctrine which was to bring closer Catholic and Orthodox ecclesiologies. However, the Orthodox theologians did not appreciate the value of this doctrine. Fifty years after its promulgation, it is also noted that the implementation of episcopal collegiality in the Catholic Church is rather restricted. This research attempts to compare the notions of episcopal collegiality and episcopal synodality, exploring a common understanding between Catholics and Orthodox of the place of the bishops within the whole Church. For Orthodox theologians, episcopal synodality does not coincide with the doctrine of episcopal collegiality, as it was formulated during the Second Vatican Council. This research focused on the common tradition of the two Churches regarding episcopal synodality. The study of common sources, namely biblical, patristic and dogmatic, is proposed as the basis for an agreement on the issue of episcopal ministry and the synodality of bishops. Such an agreement is essential to address other issues, especially that of the Roman primacy
