Abstract:
This case study attempted to explore the difficulties Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU) Saudi, undergraduate, male students encountered in writing topic sentences for the traditional, argument essays they wrote for a core writing course (COMM 1311) they took in the fall semester of 2017/2018. The data collection technique used for this study was the document review, which included thirty traditional, argument essays. MAXQDA 2020 was utilized for the data analysis. The analysis resulted in five themes of difficulties: lack of precision, lack of concision, lack of orientation, mechanics difficulties, and grammatical difficulties. The writing difficulties in each of the five themes were found to relate to the following cognitive competencies: understanding, analysis, and evaluation. Only the difficulties in lack of orientation and mechanics themes, however, were found to relate to the remembering cognitive competence, whereas the difficulties in lack of concision, mechanics, and grammar themes were found to relate to application.

The Latin term culpa on the legal ground is usually associated with res­ponsibility for torts. Many of the contemporary works link this legal construc­tion with Roman law, which till now is praised for its concision and clarity. Yet not all Roman sources present the clear dogmatic view on this point. Being per­meated with rhetoric the Theodosian Code offers various meanings of this term, which considerably differ from the ideas elaborated by the classical Roman law. Nevertheless the code played substantial role in the process of development of law in the Medieval Europe.

Brief development process of the finite element method, foundation of quasi-conforming element has been analyzed from weak formulation generalized compatibility equations and its weak continuity condition in this paper. The quasi-conforming element methods are the exact solution of generalized compatibility equations and satisfy the weak continuity requirement naturally. The quasi-conforming element methods do not satisfy stress equilibrium conditions and concision calculating process of matrix’s athwart. The discrete precision can be predicted in prior. An example of the rule-based expert system applied to the fan fault diagnosis is presented. The architecture and function of the fault diagnosis system are introduced. The expression of the fault diagnosis knowledge and the attribute of knowledge base based on the relational database have been studied. The hybrid reasoning technology was applied to the implementation of the diagnosis inference engine in the expert system. The presented fault diagnosis system is easy to modify the knowledge base with the experience accumulated in practice, and it has the advantages of expansibility, portability, concision, and high efficiency.

An energy recovery method during the durable test is put forward in this essay, and the durable test-bed of the hydraulic pump is developed. The efficiency and accuracy data acquisition is realized by using High-Speed High-Resolution sensor and data collection module. Control automation is come true by using PLC, industrial tablet PC and electric command device. The instrument panel constructed by LabWindows/CVI made the operation more concision, flexible and easy-to-use. This test bed has been put into use for a year and shows that the system can realize duration and efficient test of hydraulic pump easily and reliable.

Studies on the static stability and the ultimate bearing capacity of vierendeel latticed shells have been carried out. The buckling modal and the whole course of instability are shown using the Finite Element Method. The ultimate bearing capacity is compared with that of the single-layer latticed shell structure. The results show that the ultimate bearing capacity of the vierendeel latticed shells is 2.87 times more than that of the single-layer lattice shell in the condition of consuming the same steel. The vierendeel latticed shell structure not only has the advantages of concision and transparency like the single layer latticed shell structure, but also has the stability and carrying capacity like double-layer latticed shell structure.

This article will examine the challenges of three contemporary texts having a new orientation in their structure in order to represent the daily life. Drôle du temps of Benoît Duteurtre, Tu attends la neige, Léonard? and Du virtuel à la romance of Pierre Yergeau are among the texts that are difficult to classify or to identify under one generic nomination or according to a specific formal structure. Our study seeks to find a relation between the fragments and the desire of the authors to describe and to register the everyday life. However, we will rather try to justify the close link between the poetic of concision and representing the daily life. It is true that the fragmented structures and hybrid forms in literature are not an innovation in contemporary literature. Moreover, the second half of the 20th century testifies the existences of multiple forms, but our study shall explore the significance of such a plural form in the texts that we are examining. Cet article will examine quelques enjeux de trois romans contemporains ayant une existence romanesque de nouvelle orientation pour réprésent le quotidien. Drôle du temps by Benoît Duteurtre, Tu attends la neige, Léonard? et Du virtuel l à romance by Pierre Yergeau se trouvent parmi les textes romanesques difficiles à classer ou a identifier in a seule appellation générique ou sous une seule structure formelle. Notre étude cherchera à trouver a relationship between fragments and micro-récits de ces récits et la volonté de leurs auteurs d'and transcrire le quotidien. Cela dit, nous allons plutôt essayer de justifier et d'examiner the relation three intime was created between the form of concision et la poétique du quotidien. Il est vrai that forms fragmentée et hybride n'est pas une nouveauté dans la littérature contemporaine. D'ailleurs, the deuxième moitié du XXe siècle témoigne de l'apparition des romans multiformes mais notre étude tenter d'explorer the signification d'une telle forme plurielle dans ces textes.

Abstract This study argues that Nāzik al-Malāʾikah’s poetics—as indicated in her “Introduction” to her collection Shaẓāyā wa-ramād and her book Qaḍāyā al-shiʿr al-muʿāṣir—is in conversation with the famous American poet, critic, and short story writer Edgar Allan Poe’s poetics. This affinity has not been properly noted by critics, as their discussions have been limited to issues of form, content, or borrowings from Poe’s poems. This article argues that al-Malāʾikah’s elaborations on Poe are more profound than hitherto assumed since they articulate a different kind of formal poetics altogether. The chief characteristics of this poetics can be identified as sound/rhythm, concision, refrain (or repetition, with variation). While these innovative instances are foundational in her literary criticism, her poetry also conveys other venues of indebtedness and conversation.

This paper deals with the following topics: (a) theoretical aspects of terminology with special emphasis on English-Serbian language contacts, (b) contrastive semantic and morphosyntactic analysis of the corpus containing English and Serbian terms of the five most popular ball games in the region, which were excerpted from official texts, (c) standardization of sports terms in Serbian including six principles listed in decreasing order of priority: bi-univocity, transparency, systematicity, productivity, concision, and frequency, and (d) lexicographic codification of sports terms. The current research is based on a previous study (Milić 2004) dealing with sports terminology, the main result of which was the proposal of a model of terminological standardization and publication of an English-Serbian dictionary of sports terms entitled Englesko-srpski rečnik sportskih termina (Milić 2006).

Weinberg pursues a simple question: What “visions” of the postwar world did the principal leaders of the major belligerent powers develop during the war? Weinberg's unsurpassed mastery of World War II as a global war allows him to pen eight compelling portraits of Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo, Chiang, Stalin, Churchill, de Gaulle, and Roosevelt and their ideas for the future positions of their country. Each essay constitutes a minor masterpiece of concision and erudition in and of itself. My only quibble is that Weinberg exclusively concentrates on the top leadership and ignores the lower working levels of postwar planning—there may have been less “vision” there but most of the “grunt” work was done by those planners. Much information in these portraits is known to specialists, but there are some surprising insights, too.

Ciccone was blind from birth. Extraordinary gifted as a musician, a teacher and a scholar, Ciccone was the head of the Association Valentin Haüy (Paris, France) between 1987 and 1997. Close comparison with earlier essays on the same field of research lead us to the conclusion that Ciccone’s essay in one of a kind. Let us hope that this master piece of concision and profoundness will achieve its deserved recognition in global terms; and that a chord will also be stroked in the hearts and minds of those who deal professionally with blindness and impairment in general within the Lusophone world. It is high time for us to see “Les musiciens aveugles dans l’histoire” translated into Portuguese.

 Este artigo visa ressaltar a importância do ensaio Les musiciens aveugles dans l’histoire (Paris, Harmattan, 2001) no campo das pesquisas relativas à cegueira, bem como na própria História da Cultura. Louis Ciccone (1922-2006) era cego desde os 16 anos de idade. Extraordinariamente dotado como professor, músico e humanista, Ciccone presidiu a Association Valentin Haüy (Paris, França) entre 1987 e 1997. Comparado com outros ensaios sobre o mesmo assunto, o ensaio de Ciccone revela-se único no gênero. Esperemos que esta obra prima de concisão e profundidade alcance o meritório reconhecimento em termos globais; e que os profissionais que lidam com a cegueira e a deficiência em geral no mundo lusófono sejam devidamente sensibilizados. The study mainly focuses on resource allocation optimization for industrial product-service systems (IPS2). The development of IPS2 leads to sustainable economy by introducing cooperative mechanisms apart from commodity transaction. The randomness and fluctuation of service requests from customers lead to the volatility of IPS2 resource utilization ratio. Three basic rules for resource allocation optimization are put forward to improve system operation efficiency and cut unnecessary costs. An approach based on fuzzy multiple linear regression (FMLR) is developed, which integrates the strength and concision of multiple linear regression in data fitting and factor analysis and the merit of fuzzy theory in dealing with uncertain or vague problems, which helps reduce those costs caused by unnecessary resource transfer. The iteration mechanism is introduced in the FMLR algorithm to improve forecasting accuracy. A case study of human resource allocation optimization in construction machinery industry is implemented to test and verify the proposed model.

You're probably wondering why a violin concerto was given its UK première by the chamber ensemble Psappha? An informative programme note by Paul Griffiths for the 15 February concert revealed that Swedish composer Klas Torstensson (b. 1951) had in fact written a much longer, though still compactly scored, work in 2010 and had ‘squashed it down’ in length and further reduced the number of players. The work's full title is Pocket Size Violin Concerto – scored for soloist with unconducted accompaniment from piano, flute, and cello. Whilst compression of this kind is not uncommon in other branches of the arts, and concision is a noble artistic aim, one's fear was that such drastic pruning might have short-circuited the music's arguments. Happily this proved unfounded; and whilst the original half-hour's duration might have been pushing it a bit, the modified version (at a whisker under 17 minutes) seemed just about right.

AbstractWhen writing biographies of historical figures, narrative convention requires that concision and clarity be wrested from sources that are multiple and often confusing. In this article, I argue that multiple accounts of a person's life may be more than an accident arising from the way that information was compiled. Rather, such multiplicity renders exemplary figures adaptable to a wide variety of circumstances, making them even more useful as a focus of devotion and emulation. Examining multiple accounts of early Maliki scholar Sahnun b. Saʿ id (d. 854), including those of his travels in search of knowledge and of his suffering under the miḥna (trial) in Kairouan, I find that close attention to apparently contradictory evidence may not get us any closer to understanding the man himself, but it does offer us much information about the ways in which he was considered an exemplary individual.

The paper studies modern Ukrainian artistic reportage which synthesises the features of a travel essay and a report. The research provides a basis for drawing conclusions about genre dominants scattering in modern Ukrainian literature well-established features and modern Polish fiction story. The article aims to trace the development of artistic reportage in Ukrainian and Polish prose. The author has analysed a two-dimensional view of historic events and people’s lives in the works Stryi and the Old by Olexandr Gavrosh and Our Little Polish People’s Republic by Witold Szabłowski and Izabela Meyza. Comparative and biographical methods were used in the article. The significant combined components of both genres (a travel essay and a report) have been traced. The works include the subjectivity of the narrative, the appeal to real history, the abundance of evidence, the concision of descriptions, and emotionality. The narration in the reportages develops in parallel, focusing on the places, memory of things as well as on the reconstruction of real people’s life stories.

The translation of multicultural poetry is as challenging as it is creative. In this verse, meaning is transmitted through a defiance of norms, firstly because poetry is a genre that strives for verbal concision and innovation; and secondly because the multilingual poet involves another language —either in its original form or as a translation into the language of composition—to enhance sound and cultural imagery. In order to translate this type of poetry, it is necessary to analyze traditional translations of multicultural literature to establish what the reader’s expectations are, if any, regarding this writing technique. Also, as implicit translations embedded within the lines create a tangible heteroglossia, this element must be considered and conveyed as such in the new version. In this study, the ideas on polylingualism in literature discussed by Mikhail Bakhtin, Meir Steinberger, Walter Mignolo, and Paul Bandia are first weighed, and then an examination of the actual Spanish versions of U.S. Latino poetry published in Usos de la imaginación: poesía de l@s latin@s en EE.UU helps crystallize the problems and strategies involved in the translation of multicultural literature.
 
 La traducción de la poesía multicultural es una tarea tan desafiante como creativa. En esta lírica, se transmite el sentido a través de un cuestionamiento de las normas, primero porque la poesía es un género que busca la concisión verbal y la innovación; segundo porque el poeta multicultural involucra otra lengua—en su forma original o como traducción a la lengua de composición—para enriquecer las imágenes sonoras y culturales. Para traducir este tipo de poesía, es necesario investigar modos tradicionales de traducir la literatura multicultural para así establecer cuáles son, si existen, las expectativas de lectura. También, ya que las traducciones implícitas crean una heteroglosia tangible, hay que considerar este factor y transmitirlo en la nueva versión. En este estudio, se examina las ideas sobre el uso de polilingüismo en la literatura expuestas por Mikhail Bakhtin, Meir Steinberger, Walter Mignolo y Paul Bandi, y luego se analizan las traducciones al castellano de poesía latina realizadas para el libro Usos de la imaginación: poesía de l@s latin@s en EE.UU para llegar a una cristalización de los problemas y posibles soluciones para la traducción de la literatura multicultural.

D'ailleurs, chez Gilles Vigneault, le plus médiéval des chansonniers du Québec, on trouve encore la villanelle, la ballade avec envoi. À ce titre, la chanson, comme genre, emprunte beaucoup aux figures de la rhétorique, énumération, répétition, chiasme, opposition, anaphore, etc. Elle garde surtout de la forme fixe une sorte de concision qui la rend lapidaire. Appartenant à la poésie lyrique, la chanson joue sur le rythme, sur la musicalité et, sur la tropation tout particulièrement. Elle réconcilie texte musical et texte littéraire, les marie, les oppose, assure leur efficacité réciproque par leur rencontre mesurée, ponctuée, valorisée. En ce sens, et l'évolution de la chanson d'un siècle à l'autre est allée vers cela, la chanson appartient au(x) discours et possède un pouvoir rhétorique tel qu'elle est devenue un haut lieu de la poésie chantée en même temps qu'une tribune idéologique plurielle. Translation is slippery art that compounds the problems of the inherent instability of language with the unruly process of duplicating it in another system. The sliding that occurs in the translation of multicultural poetry is even more pronounced since the distance from “the norm” becomes greater and greater. This is true firstly because poetry is a genre that strives for verbal concision and innovation in a playful defiance of norms that pique the reader’s imagination; and secondly because the multilingual poet often involves a second language —either in its original form or as a translation into the language of composition—to enhance sound and cultural imagery. Latino poetry generally glides along on the linguistic and cultural tension inherent in both its poeticity and its English/Spanish and Latino/Anglo dualities that challenge normative discourse.
